I noticed there was a huge gap and the Small Business Sector, it was being underserved. For years I struggled with how to fill that gap. After plenty of market research, I saw how a book would be timeless. FYI: The series didn’t start as a series, it started as a single book. In 2017, Volume 1 had such great reviews, endorsements, and demand, that a second volume was immediately requested.
In 2018, we delivered Volume 2. Each year we added another volume until we published 5 volumes. Each year, the releasing volume gained many #1 Bestselling rankings to be an undeniable #1 Bestseller. Volumes 4 and 5 also became #1 International Bestsellers.
Was it challenging to find and vet true experts to become our Brilliant Expert Authors? You bet! My focus was to provide better business guidance to Small Business Owners. After all, “you are our economy’s accelerant” (the book series’ dedication).
In each of the volumes, the Introduction includes conversations regarding the American Dream (and its early founders’ experimentation), Business Owners’ current crippling challenges and how the UN-Experts are relentlessly preying upon Business Owners and Entrepreneurs, and how you can make a difference by becoming a Change Agent. Perhaps most importantly, it provides a proven business model for all businesses to access and simplify their business’s performance immediately.
Throughout the 5 volumes, the 30+ authors share their practical and applicable wisdom of fresh perspectives. They also provide you with a glossary regarding their topic and links for additional no-cost training to complement their chapter’s topic.

So the podcast was designed to complement the book, and be dedicated to our Expert Authors sharing their wisdom- even beyond what they wrote.
Research also revealed we needed to be in the marketplace constantly. The podcast became a weekly production. Research also revealed small business owners wanted a simple, raw and real conversation from experts to provide better business guidance. We delivered on all accounts!

Intentional SELF-Leadership Create Success
What is Intentional SELF-Leadership?
Intentional SELF-Leadership impacts your success as gentle flowing water transforms the shape of a stone.
After I wrote a chapter on how “Success Starts with Intentional SELF-Leadership”, in the #1 Bestselling Book for Small Businesses, small business owners and entrepreneurs started reaching out to me and began asking me oodles of questions. I was elated because they understood how critical this is to their business’s success.
I assure you the impact it provides is grander than the credit you’ll ever give it – until you are a practitioner!
Let’s begin with some definitions for clarity
If you want to better understand leadership, and what it is and isn’t, we need to first understand a simplified definition of a leader. A leader is: “one who assumes a position and is responsible for influencing of others”.
Now let’s add a definition of leadership. Leadership is: “the influence of a person or team to guide another person or team”.
Intentional is defined as: “when done consciously or deliberately”.
The last definition for this post is influence. Influence is defined as: “to have an effect upon someone or something”.
Note: These definitions, as well as others defining different types of leadership and management, are from The Glossary of Chapter 5 of “Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in your Business – Volume 5“.
So what is SELF-Leadership?
SELF-Leadership is all about you! Just like any significant transformation, it starts from within. I know you understand what I’m sharing. We all know statements like “Happiness is an inside job” or “Peace starts from within”. Why? It’s true. There are approximately 100 years of research validating the same is true for leadership too!
After conducting plenty of research, I have concluded that SELF-Leadership is defined as “An ongoing practice of advancing a leader’s thoughts, actions, and emotions to achieve desired outcomes”. I bet you’re nodding your head in agreement Good!
This last definition ups the game of leadership, doesn’t it? SELF-Leadership debunks the leadership myth of “you’re a leader if you turn around and see others are following you”. How so? Because you can be leading from a still point (oneself) or from the rear instead of the front. During podcast episode BB245: Intentional SELF-Leadership -Part 4 of the Brilliant Breakthroughs Business Podcast, I share a funny childhood story that debunks this leadership myth.
Through the ongoing practice of SELF-Leadership, leaders are being refined to the next level of leadership. It sure appears to be the quality control factor so leaders can become great leaders instead of becoming a dud, who is a leader by position and/or title only.
What is Intentional SELF-Leadership?
Intentional SELF-Leadership is the premiere leadership approach and practice. It means that a leader is conscientiously and deliberately practicing the advancement of their thoughts, actions, and emotions to achieve desired outcomes. This is like putting your vision and goals on steroids – and that’s why it delivers unconventional results!
Sounds daunting, doesn’t it? Other than the self-management of the continual practicing aspect, it is pretty easy. Ok, after you learn how to do it! When I’m working with clients, I’m teaching them how to do this without a fancy name or process. I guide them to incorporate it into their daily practice of business ownership and it auto-magically happens 🙂
As I reflect upon 20+ years of business coaching, it’s evident that Intentional SELF-Leadership is the game changer for all types of business leaders. When practicing Intentional SELF-Leadership, you will function optimally and make better business decisions (life decisions too). You can do this because you are applying the ancient practice of Right Thoughts coupled with Right Actions to actualize your desired outcomes.
Is Intentional SELF-Leadership for all Business Leaders?
It can be for all leaders – tenured or new, solo entrepreneurs or corporate. The deciding factor is what are you willing to do to achieve the results you seek?
Does this mean every day is perfect and without glitches? No. Does it mean you will have a clear path and actions to your destination? Yes.
Is it worth the time to gain clarity and align your actions? Yes! Is it for leaders who are looking for a quick fix? No.
Intentional SELF-Leadership is for leaders interested in the long-term game, satisfying wins, and sustainable gains. My quote, “Slow down to accelerate.” is one of the methodologies applied to becoming a successful intentional leader. This transformational approach is very much like water flowing over a stone to give the stone a beautiful new shape.
When goals aren’t being met or frustrations occur, it’s common for leaders to look outwardly and sleuth what needs to change to generate better results. Instead, what if they first took a look inwardly to discover what changes may be beneficial?
It’s time for you to shine brightly as a leader!
If this seems practical to you, it’s time for you to learn more about Inward Leadership. It’s my version of Intentional SELF-Leadership 🙂  Tap here to go to the Inward Leader Page. When you do, I’ll email you the 10-Step Process to Practice Inward Leadership (no cost – yes, I’m that committed to helping others learn this). It’ll land in your inbox and then each week I’ll guide you through the next step until we complete all 10 steps.

Celebrating Customer Success: Jamie Shibley
Celebrating Customer Success: Jamie Shibley Then & Now
For Jamie Shibley, it started with a card. Then, over the many years, Jamie’s appreciation for the expressed feelings, via cards, became a business concept. That was 6 years ago.  I remember we were introduced by a mutual business acquaintance at a networking event. What happened next was truly magical Warning: This isn’t an overnight success story!
Jamie Shibley, Then…
After the networking event, we met at a coffee shop and Jamie shared some of her business monsters (challenges) with me. She shared the good, the bad, and the ugly about her first business. What amazed me is how candid she was. She put it on the table and told me what her personal goal was for her business, as well as her business’s goals.
Was her experience unique? Yes, it sure was and it was impacting how she was performing in her current business. Additionally, her challenges were new to her, but not uncommon for many business owners.
Jamie was inquisitive – asking questions. Moreso, she was asking the right questions about: best practices, practical and stretching goals, product viability, mindset, business models, management, and marketing.
The Discovery Process
Being a tenured project manager, staying on task wasn’t an issue with Jamie, she was a dedicated Small Business Owner in start-up mode. So what was the immediate challenge? Mindset and a viable product.
I remember our first coaching session. Jamie went to the huge whiteboard and drew out her vision of how one handmade card, at a time, could change the world. I remember some of those initial thoughts and conversation points we had about the product itself.
What if others could experience receiving a genuine and thoughtful expression from another person?
Could this change their relationship?
Would this impact each of their lives?
Once we understood the purpose and vision, we really needed to explore if this concept was viable. Jamie had completed extensive marketplace research. This also included competitive analysis.  We got busy, as they say. We needed to find out how to bring this together, including initial marketing, to take it to the marketplace.
The Viability Experiment
Jamie took what we planned for marketplace experimenting to the market. For 6 months she was going to experiment. As a good scientist conducts experiments, we discussed how to shift the variables and see what would happen. Of course, the key is not to get attached to any particular outcome.
The hardest part of experimenting isn’t collecting everyone’s feedback, it’s about allowing the truth of what the marketplace will appreciate (purchase) to appear instead of what you, the founder, initially assumed. Jamie did this splendidly!
The Experiment’s Outcome
In less than 2 years, Jamie was able to see what the marketplace needed and wanted. Her experiment revealed something she hadn’t envisioned, and they revealed they would pay for this service.
All of the ongoing experiments revealed a rebranding was necessary to better align with what the marketplace would engage with and purchase.  And the next concept needed to go through another round of product viability and marketing possibilities. This round tends to move swiftly because the process is already known and Jamie had all the clues from her experimenting.
Jamie Shibley, Now…
The rebranding: The Expressory was born in 2018. Have there been multiple reworks? Of course! Curious? Tap here to go to The Expressory’s website. It still aligns with Jamie’s initial vision. Does it look different? You bet! Why? Jamie did her research until the “what” was revealed. Tip: Jamie heard me when I told her, “If you truly identify your “what” the “who” will reveal itself. Once you have these two components, the “how” automatically is known. Again, it all needs experimentation throughout the whole process, which Jamie did exquisitely.
What’s the reward? Jamie’s concept went from a solo entrepreneur’s basement business to … ready for this? The Expressory now employs three angels to serve her ever-expanding customer base to… a 2,000 square foot warehouse that’s already full in less than a year of signing a lease! hard to believe that it’s almost six months since these pictures were taken at The Expressory’s Open House in Spring 2022.  Did I mention, that her husband is very proud of her and the business?
Indeed! Jamie Shibley, of The Expressory, has reasons to celebrate! Does she still have business monsters (challenges) lurking? Don’t we all! Is she working to improve her business and her business ownership skills each week? You betcha – that’s how she’ll be a grand success and finally cross the $1 Million Dollar threshold. When I asked her if she crossed this threshold, her response was, “Not yet!”
FYI: Jamie will achieve it soon and we just shared a case study of how it’s done. How do I know this? My client’s history reveals all sorts of ways that all good things come to those who are seriously committed to owning their marketplace.  Each one of them will confirm, “It may not be easy, but it is simple.”

Top Gun: Business Movie Review
Top Gun: Business Movie Review
Top Gun Movie (1986) is filled with business strategies for Business Owners to apply.
Learn Business Strategies of  Confidence, Protocols, & Promises
The adrenaline-rushing blockbuster movie, Top Gun (1986) will be releasing its sequel movie, Top Gun: Maverick in theaters on May 27, 2022. This has been a long-awaited sequel to the original intimate movie when we all learned about Naval Aviation Combat Maneuvers in the 80s. Being a military family, we enjoy Top Gun and have seen it at least 15 times over the decades. We just recently watched it to brush up on the storyline that will catapult some ties from Top Gun into Top Gun: Maverick. During my last viewing, I was surprised to learn that I haven’t written a Business Movie Review on the original movie. So here we go!
Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise), and his co-pilot “Goose”, become the default selection to attend Top Gun Training. Maverick comes with a haunted past. His father “Duke” was a pilot and an incident occurred, that tarnished his record. Maverick wasn’t allowed entrance into the Naval Academy because of his father’s record and has been trying to prove (gunning) that he is competent and deserves such acknowledgment. Even though Maverick is confident in his capabilities, he pushes the envelope, which ultimately costs him his best friend, self-dignity, and the love of his life, as well as the respect from his peers. This plot twists and turns as often as a Top Gun’s training maneuvers.
As you read this review and watch the movie, come back, and leave a comment – let’s learn from one another! There are numerous parallels between Maverick’s experience and what Small Business Owners experience on a regular basis. There are many more strategies to help you achieve your success than the several I mention. Enjoy experimenting and applying the different strategies to improve your business success.
Top Gun Business Strategy #1  Confidence
Rightly so, all students at Top Gun training are considered elite pilots. Being confident makes a life-or-death difference in a pilot’s line of work. Time and time again, Maverick is filled with arrogance throughout this movie. For starters, he insistently approaches a woman to sleep with him, makes a rogue power move to infringe upon international relations, he disregards orders, and he places his training goal in jeopardy.
After a fatal incident, Viper says to Maverick, “You feel responsible … and you have a confidence problem.” Then, Viper continues to support Maverick to find his groove again.
NOTE: There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance; yet, when a person slides into arrogance it is obvious to everyone.
Confidence Best Practice:  Performance requires one to be confident – even in the face of adversity. Ernest Hemingway said it best, “Be brave enough to suck as something new.” This approach will definitely build confidence.
Top Gun Business Strategy #2 Protocols
During the first day of flying maneuvers, the pilots are told not to engage below the hard deck (10,000 feet in this case). Maverick disregards the protocol so he can fulfill his goals. He does accomplish the goal AND he is disqualified because he broke the rules.
Maverick’s primary competition says, “You’re everyone’s problem. That’s because every time you go up in the air, you’re unsafe. I don’t like you because you are dangerous.” In the next scene, Viper tells Maverick, “Top Gun Rules of Engagement exist for your safety and that of your team. They are not flexible, nor am I. Either obey them or you are history.”
Protocols Best Practice:  Protocols are to help everyone understand the necessary guidelines so we can perform well. Do you find yourself wanting to manipulate the appropriate performance rules? Don’t do it – others will see it as dangerous and not want to engage with you.
Top Gun Business Strategy #3 Promises
Repeatedly, Maverick makes promises to his co-pilot Goose that he’ll stop taking risks. Promises are commitments that something will be done. Maverick doesn’t deliver and he isn’t the only one who pays the price. (No spoiler here.)
How often do you make promises? In business, an appointment, customer service, or deadline is a promise. If you aren’t prepared for what you committed to, you are breaking a promise. Business is filled with promises. Working on just this one point will help you align with integrity. It’s easy for people to notice who is and isn’t delivering promises. Wouldn’t it be great to create a reputation of trust and be know as dependable?
Promises Best Practice: Do your best to NOT overextend yourself. Push back appointments and dates to assure you have enough cushion between all your deliverables. This will help you keep your integrity and fulfill your promises.
FYI: You’re reading one of my innovations. Watching movies is my thing. I have the gift of seeing endless business strategies in movies. I’ve mashed sharing business strategies of movies into content to help my readers look at their business from a fresh perspective. It’s a great experiment! What’s yours?
Feel free to share in the comment section which one of the Business Strategies from the “Top Gun” movie would serve YOU and YOUR Business best right now?

New Post has been published on https://www.brilliantbreakthroughs.com/business-by-default-or-design/
Business by Default or Design
Are you building your business and life by default or by design? Get your adjustments now.
Business: By Default or Design?
There are many Business Owners who manage their business by default instead of design and are frustrated with their business’s performance. Intentional business development increases a business’s success rate and improves its business performance. When Small Business Owners shift their business approach from default to design they feel confident and start to move their business toward excellence.
It’s only Human Nature…
I don’t know many people who like learning things that aren’t natural to them. during the past 20 years, I haven’t seen this change for Small Business Owners.
Human nature has a tendency to resist what it doesn’t like. I’ve seen this show up in many ways in businesses. Most commonly, there are business owners who don’t do their financial books, don’t build out the systems they need for their business to function appropriately, don’t do purpose-driven networking and social media, or avoid learning how to sell.
Human nature doesn’t necessarily support success – not personally nor professionally.
This is precisely why we have instruction, training, coaching, and teachers, mentors, or guides. Simply, to learn what doesn’t come naturally. Little humans, like infants and toddlers, don’t like wearing clothes; yet, we teach them to do so. Children don’t like studying; yet, we teach them. Adults don’t necessarily like schedules or commitments; yet, they adhere. Such examples demonstrate natural default versus design.
Are you Building a Business by Default or Design?
Now, this is where things get serious! I shared some examples of what the majority of Small Business Owners don’t do. These are essential activities to grow and sustain the business. Are you one of the Small Business Owners who resist?
Chances are you are resisting something and it is impeding upon your and your business’s success rate. I refer to this as default. Conversely, conducting your business by design means you are intentionally conducting business systems and activities to create the desired outcome.
Are you focusing on design?
The design focus approach is on your dream, your intentions, your plans, and your actions all working in unison to fulfill your desired outcome (intentions).
Design isn’t haphazard. Design requires Right Thoughts or a great deal of thinking to develop the vision to be a winning vision.
Your design must have a strategy, or plan, to couple Right Thoughts with Right Actions to successfully deliver the vision.
What are Right Thoughts and Right Actions?
Right Thoughts are all the thinking involved in discerning what will provide your favorable outcomes according to what you intend.
Right Actions are all the actions that align with your Right Thoughts to fulfill your intention.
CLUE: Business is a practice. You design it. If not, default it is being created. Ultimately, default creates those business monsters you’re tangling with on a daily basis.
Why is this important to know and practice?
NOTE: This is the Business Owners path. I similar to doctors and therapists, who have a practice and are serving their customers with the best practices they know at that given moment. Additionally, they must complete continuing education and research to stay current with the latest techniques and breakthroughs.
Doesn’t this sound similar to the dynamic business ownership of the 21st century?
Let me back up a bit…
For over a decade, I’ve been blogging about how to optimize business performance and leadership. Throughout this decade-long conversation, I’ve shared the importance of SELF-Leadership. I chose to write about it in Vol 5 of Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner in the #1 Bestselling Business Book Series for Small Business. I researched SELF-Leadership for over a decade – even wrote about it for my Master’s Thesis. It really boils down to (1) Identifying your Intention and (2) Defining your Action Plan to (3) Achieve Leadership Proficiency – but it isn’t about leading others. It’s about learning how to lead yourself first. This means being responsible and accountable to do and achieve what is necessary to advance. I call this our noble work.
Aligning Thoughts & Actions for a Dynamic Business Design
Let’s fast forward to March 2022. I had the opportunity to be in some particular training. Even though they don’t use these terms, I say it advances SELF-Leadership. The training and tools I’m referencing are through Becoming Your Best Global Leadership. I was surprised how they took best practices and synthesized them into one simplified process and tools to support their participants to become their best. I noticed a direct alignment between all my SELF-Leadership research and their training, which was delivered by a retired US Air Force Fighter Pilot, Rob Shallenberger.
Rob Shallenberger and his father wrote a great book, Do What Matters Most. It’s been one month since I took their training, I have two mantras running through my mind all day long, “By default or design” and “Am I doing what matters most?”
As I’m moving throughout my business day and my personal life, I continue to ask myself these questions, as if they are a guiding prompt. I invite you to do the same!
Here’s a Powerful Training for Simplifying Your Success
Wisconsin Business Owners is hosting a 1-hour training event for anyone who wants to learn how to Do What Matters Most. Our business partner, Becoming Your Best Global Leadership, will deliver their crystalized training and even ship your materials prior to the training session. New Post has been published on https://www.brilliantbreakthroughs.com/business-declaration-of-independence/
What's Your Declaration of Independence for YOUR Business?
The signing of the Declaration of Independence. Ultimately making July 4th Independence Day.
What’s Your Declaration of Independence for YOUR Business?
The Declaration of Independence is one of the founding documents of the United States of America. The other two documents which express the country’s ideals for founding the country are The Constitution and The Bill of Rights. Together they form the Charter of Freedom. FYI: This is a great example of an outcome of networking with intention. Do you have similar guiding documents for your business?
Founding the American Dream of Business Success
Even though most of the Founding Fathers were ordained ministers, most people forget they were also business owners. They were fierce business owners as their existence depended upon them producing their resources – think: becoming successful businessmen. I address this Grand Experiment and early entrepreneurialism in the Introduction and first chapter of “Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in Your Business” – Volume 1.
Our Founding Fathers and their families were the ones who created what we now call, The American Dream. Great name, isn’t it? Even 200+ years later, their successes have become the ruler to which we measure our business success. One of the reasons they were successful is that they understood what they stood for, what their goals were, and how they would behave to achieve their goals. Do you do this to support your business’s success?
What’s Your Business’s Declaration of Independence?
Most entrepreneurs and small business owners begin their business with a vision. They hold a vision to provide a solution for others. Our readers know that we’ve written plenty about visions and practicing envisioning in our blog over the past 10 years. They also know the marketplace sees the business’s offering as a solution. For a founding business, this is its purpose. They also understand it is necessary to have a mission (specific actions) to bring their vision to life and actualize it.
Do you have your business’s Declaration of Independence? What about your business’s Constitution or Bill of Rights? Each document supported independence. You, too, are independent. What business documentation do you have to remind you why do what you do, how you do it, and the benefit of doing it well?
Independence is an internal and external game. I believe it begins internally and works its way outside of your thoughts and heart to become something written. Then we constantly internalize our vision. Your vision is what inspires you to do all those business activities you don’t want to do. You know, the ones that are what’s going to support your business’s success.
Are you taking time to document what is guiding your business? What is guiding you and your team? How do you recommit yourself to your vision and ideals? What are you doing to stay inspired?
How are you setting yourself up to win every day? After almost 20 years of business ownership, I know it’s not easy. There is a multitude of challenges each day.
CLUE: If you move through enough challenges, you will reap the rewards.
Is it essential to develop YOUR business’s independence?
Your business’s independence is dependent upon you. You may be like the founders of the American Dream – focusing on survival, or you may be experiencing tremendous growth. Either way, I assure you it is imperative for you to have your founding documents to guide you with the Right Thoughts and Right Actions to achieve your independence and goals.
The Declaration of Independence reveals why our country separated from England. Additionally, it introduced the concepts of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Essentially, freedom from tyranny. Over the next several posts, I will further discuss how Independence, Life, Liberty, Freedom, and the Pursuit of Happiness are your right as a small business owner.
So you haven’t been having the success you seek, chances are you haven’t laid a strong enough business foundation to support success. If you have created your foundation, it may not have enough daily fortification to strengthen it to support your current business activities effectively. If you have grand plans for your business’s future, you need to be extremely mindful of your business’s foundation.
Independence Day for a child? How independent is your business?
Now what?
First: Make time to assess how strong your business’s foundation is right now. What type of rework do you need to give it to better support you and your vision?
Second: Read the Declaration of Independence and see if there are concepts that you need to contemplate and possibly infuse into your business.
Third: Instead of saying, “Happy 4th!” or “Happy July 4th!” focus on independence. Keep reinforcing independence for yourself and others.
I’ll say it again, YOUR business’s independence is dependent upon you! Think of it as yourself as the parent to this child (your business), and it needs you to care for it. Own this truth and your business’s success!
And, Happy Independence Day!

How getting my COVID shot impacted productivity
How getting my COVID shot impacted productivity
When recovering from a COVID shot, you may discover surprises about your business activities.
Getting my COVID Shot created a very unexpected awareness to help me better understand my productivity levels. Being dubbed a productivity expert, this was amazing to notice. I focus, with great attention, on my productivity. Why? I know it’s one of the key places I can control and make a huge difference in my business’s evolution.
Curious what happened? Let’s start at the beginning…
Getting my first COVID shot
I was fortunate enough to learn about a clinic providing shots before the states and nation encouraging everyone. I went to my first appointment rather unexpectedly. Only the night before did I learn I was on the schedule. So I went to the clinic, and everything was fine. Then, it happened! I had a harsh recovery that took 5 days to clear. I was in horrible shape. I was on a critical timeline for some big projects involving be a video host for an upcoming summit. The days were brutal.
I was running a fever, having difficulty breathing, could barely stay awake… and the show must go on! I felt like I was a marionette puppet doll. I would get all propped up for the next show, and then immediately afterward, I would collapse. I did this exhausting routine for four days and needed another two days to recover from not being able to rest enough.
Admittedly, as a Small Business Owner, I have pulled all-nighters for different things, worked over 100 hours in a week more than I should have. Many of us do crazy things, and I’m not here to say I’m a superhero. It’s just the truth of how we show up when we are committed to achieving something.
How did I prepare for my second COVID shot?
When it comes to productivity, I guard my time. When I compromise too much on my schedule, I run into problems.
So I was smarter than the average bear about my second shot. I didn’t schedule anything critical for the week I had it. In fact, I intensely worked the week before accomplishing what needed to occur. It was a great plan. I gave myself the time and space to recover so I could get back to business in an efficient way.
What happened after my second COVID shot?
I went to bed feeling accomplished that I had given myself the cushion I needed if the reaction was like the first. Upon awakening, I wasn’t feeling so well, so I canceled an appointment the day after the shot. I had forewarned them I may need to do this if I wasn’t feeling well. All was good.
I was so proud of making myself a priority – something I work on every day. I called this day after the shot my “slow day.” I promised myself I wasn’t going to turn on my laptop. Success – I didn’t! I promised I wasn’t going to walk into the office. Success – I didn’t! I promised I was going to take it easy. Then it happened.
I was getting text messages—many texts. I chose to answer texts in real-time so they wouldn’t get backed up. Four texts were from friends checking in on me. That was great.
I kept getting messages – lots of them. They just wouldn’t stop! At the end of the day, I was exhausted from all the messages. It seemed nonstop. So I was curious how many texts came in a little less than 10 hours. What’s your guess? I was way off. I had 112 texts. That’s right, 112, subtract the four personal check-ins, and that’s 108 text messages during a typical workday.
Is this high text volume regularly occurring?
Since that day, I’m amazed at what’s occurring with my text volume, which gets buried throughout the day of the normal interactions. I’ve been paying attention to what’s happening this week. I’m having about 30 – 45 texts per day on a low day. Other than that, I’m averaging 63 – 89 texts. That’s a lot of communication and distraction.
Irony? I don’t even like texting! I was reluctant to do it when it started. Unfortunately, now I’m proficient.
I know how to manage my high email volume and have it dialed in well that I’m responsive and block time for it. Yet, texting wasn’t on my radar screen as a huge distractor until I was only with it.
Now I need to research and review my archived text logs to understand if this is the norm. Regardless of what I noticed, it is clear to me I need to make some adjustments, so my texting isn’t eroding my productivity.
Thanks, COVID shot, for helping me find these hidden distractions which are hindering my progress!
Your turn: I invite you to pay more attention to your texting volume during your working hours and find a way to engage with it in time blocks too!

3 Tips from Jellyfish to Smooth Business Performance
Jellyfish can teach small business owners how to smooth business performance.
3 Tips from Jellyfish to Smooth Business Performance
Has your business performance been chopping or sporadic this past year? If so, you aren’t alone AND it doesn’t need to stay this way. Let’s see what we can learn to smooth business performance from an unlikely teacher.
Recently I was reflecting upon a trip we took to the Outer Banks of North Carolina years ago. This was quite the trip. Even though we lived there for almost 5 years, courtesy of the US Marine Corps, we had never been to the Outer Banks (OBX). We remedied this and experienced some really cool things in a far-too-short of a trip. I’d like to share one with you.
It was my experience with jellyfish at the aquarium. I wish I could’ve stayed and watched them for about another hour, but that wasn’t in our plans. My followers know I’m a big fan of nature. I enjoy reflecting upon what our natural world can teach us and transform these observations into business lessons to improve our business performance. Additionally, I know you appreciate this too because my posts about the sales lessons a tomato plant can teach us and observing ants are some of my most-read posts!
Now, we go to the water… What did I learn about business as I watched jellyfish at the aquarium?
Jellyfish Business Tip 1: Adapt
No matter where the tide takes you, stay on course. Being able to adapt will allow you to respond in realtime. Now, keep in mind, you may have an advantage to doing this over jellyfish. After all, you have a brain. We are fully aware of how our brain can snag us into unfavorable approaches, but if used for improvement, it should advance your business performance. Have a plan and build in cushion so you can adapt to the day’s needs.
Jellyfish Business Tip 2: Assess Your Marketplace
The marketplace of the jellyfish is the entire ocean or container (pool) they are able to access. To a business owner, your marketplace is your pool to conduct business. You don’t need the whole ocean to succeed while improving your business performance; however, you do need to understand your environment. The better you understand your marketplace, the less chance you have of getting entangled and ending up in a compromising circumstance. Worse yet, being redirected and fighting for your life on a beach. Take time to assess if you’re swimming in the appropriate marketplace to meet your goals.
Jellyfish Business Tip 3: Ambition
I noticed that when I first observed jellyfish, they seem to be floating effortlessly. Then, I watched them for an extended period of time and noticed how they are consistently working. I believe we have this first impression of jellyfish because they are moving in the water. Even though they are in constant action, they have a sense of graceful fluidity to them. How would you feel if you could be in constant action for a day and experience it as graceful fluidity?
If you haven’t thought about how to smooth your business performance, don’t worry. It’s not a common thought. Yet, uncommon thoughts coupled with uncommon actions tend to produce uncommon (and favorable) results.
Jellyfish being mindful of their environment. Are you being mindful of your business environment?
Action Steps: Infuse these 3 tips for one week and see what type of results you attain. I bet you’ll be performing with greater ease. Then, come back and share your experience or ask questions – we’re here to help you shine brightly!

Together, they have launched a new business, where they work as partners, to help others advance their lives and businesses through building more confidence.
The following is what Melinda and Ryan Van Fleet want to share with you:
Three Important Questions To Ask Yourself to Increase Your Confidence
How does it make you feel when someone you trusted does a 180? And then the company owner, the person’s boss, can’t make time to speak with you?
We all deal with challenging situations every day. Often, we replay the scenario over and over in our heads. We vent, we review, and we dissect.
Have you been there?
I interviewed a small business owner for our chapter in the 4th Annual Bestselling book series, Brilliant Breakthroughs For The Small Business Owner. I was excited and thought it was a win-win because, in my sales rep role, I was representing his line, it was new to the market, and the chapter mention could be some excellent free publicity. The interview was short, but I had a quote that fit well in our chapter- Building Confidence Along With A Successful Business From The Ground Up.
A few weeks later, right before the book was scheduled to go to the publisher, the company’s sales manager went back on her word regarding the territory. Furthermore, she lied about the changes. The owner of the company (the same person I had interviewed) could not make time with me to discuss.
What would you do?
I recognized both of their behavior was not how I deserved to be treated, and I confidently walked away. I requested the quote be changed, and luckily it was able to be changed.
As I speak, write, and coach on confidence, it’s also essential to recognize your values.
Ask yourself these three questions:
What’s important to you?
Why is it important to you?
How can your values be measured? I.e., Understand what triggers you and isn’t in alignment with how you wish to feel.
Often, we don’t understand our values until it’s too late and then we may make the wrong decision. Worse yet, no decision at all, and continue to be treated poorly.
The sales manager was shocked when I told her I would not be working with them anymore. Shocked is probably an understatement. I had discussed all the facets associated with the challenge, and she refused to listen. She underestimated me. I had a clear vision of my values and how I deserved to be treated. I understood what I brought to the table for their business and was confident enough to walk away. I realized better opportunities would come my way, and they did.
It may take a while to get to this level, which is understandable. Almost all things in life take practice, experience, and pivots. These behaviors compound over time. I worked on building my confidence in conjunction with awareness and alignment for years.
I have found, as I practiced, I have never regretted any decision. That confirmation added to my confidence.
You have the same opportunity as well.
Thank you for allowing me to share~ Melinda and Ryan

He just penned a very eye-opening chapter in our newest volume about how to Integrate for Well-Managed, Integrated Growth. I assure you, it will significantly improve YOUR Business’s Performance.
Today’s blogging guest, Dennis Hill, Ph.D., who is one of the members of the Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner #1 Bestselling Book Series Author Team. To give you a glimpse of several different chapters, I invited our co-authors to write a short guest blog to learn about why their chapter topic is important to YOUR Business Success.
Business Technology Expert, Dennis Hill, Ph. D.
Business Technology Expert, Dr. Dennis Hill, Ph.D., guides businesses approach productivity from a fresh perspective.
In Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in Your Business – Vol  4, Business Author Dennis, Hill, Ph.D. shares how most businesses still aren’t approaching our business’s technology systems the way we need to for success in this century. He provides a powerful analogy for us to reflect upon our business and see where we have gaps – isolated systems – and how we can better integrate them for seamless optimization.
The following is what Dennis Hill, Ph.D. wants to share with you:
Integration for Growth
Every small business owner, entrepreneur, and hobbyist shares the same desire for success in their respective venture, but in today’s complex commerce realm, being an expert at all of the fundamentals to create and operate a successful business is merely impossible. We are living in a new era of commerce. The World Economic Forum refers to this period as the 4th Industrial Revolution. The companies that will take root and grow will be well-managed and intentional when acquiring, creating, and leveraging knowledge.
First, knowledge is not data. Knowledge is the sum or range of familiarity and association perceived, discovered, learned, or experienced about data. In other words, how pieces of information link to another, the relationship among data points, essentially defines knowledge. It is no wonder that worldwide sales of contact relationship management software (or CRM) has grown geometrically over the past decade. Even less surprising is businesses’ movement away from discrete sales of a product or service to the broader offering of “experience” for a customer with one’s business.
Second, a team of stakeholders is needed to sustain all businesses. Today, enlightened owners see contractors and even strategic customers and suppliers as stakeholders, not just themselves and their employees; therefore, efficient and effective knowledge management requires integrated databases, i.e., programs used to capture, modify, and apply company data, tied to each other in a streamlined manner that empowers stakeholders.
Third, choosing an infrastructure or platform to build and integrate a company is the next important step. Management by email (and attachments) is hardly efficient, and texting is just too Pavlovian with all the other alerts one receives all day. Identifying a suite of critical programs and applications to run accounting, payroll, customer order processing, and digital marketing, having them available on any device to access all information, and including security that restricts access on a “need to know” basis are all necessary to avoid common cyber-related pitfalls.
Sounds easy? It’s not, and that‘s why I am a contributing author to Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner, Volume 4, to be released November 11, 2020.  My chapter alone is not sufficient to answer every question that will arise. Still, business owners can rest assured that the integration process outlined in my chapter adequately augments hundreds of other “wisdom nuggets” found throughout every edition of this award-winning series, rendering Brilliant Breakthroughs a convenient and accessible board of advisors or directors.  After all, isn’t a board-in the-hand worth two anywhere else?
Thank you ~ Dennis

Allow Me to Introduce: Expert Anne Mank
It’s time to take a fresh perspective and learn from Anne Mank, as she learned to control her experience with money. Anne is a disrupter in the “financial mindset” or “money self-talk” arenas and educates others on how to improve their relationship with money. She just penned a very creative chapter about Your Financial Freedom Trail. I assure you, it will significantly improve YOUR Business’s Performance.
Today’s blogging guest is a Certified Financial Planner and Wealth Coach, Anne Mank, who is one of the members of the Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner #1 Bestselling Book Series Author Team. On 11-11-2020 a group of 9 Brilliant Practicing ExpertsTM lead by Maggie Mongan, will be releasing their book to coincide with National Entrepreneurs Month. To give you a glimpse of several different chapters, I invited our co-authors to write a short guest blog to learn about why their chapter topic is important to YOUR Business Success.
People Performance Expert, Anne Mank
Anne Mank invites us to look at our own money stories so we can write a new script and improve our relationship with money.
In Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in Your Business – Vol  4, Business Author Anne Mank shares her wisdom by the storytelling of a character’s journey, which is filled with great tips and insightful training as they work to achieve financial freedom. Anne’s chapter is titled “The Financial Freedom Trail”.  Anne’s sweet spot is to change the money conversations we’re having and educate on how we need to release our old money stories to create improved financial results.
The following is what Anne Mank wants to share with you:
Your Money Story
One of the earliest memories I have with money is filling a paper sleeve with pennies. Remember those? They were about four inches in length, and you had to slide pennies in there and then bring it to the bank to exchange for dollar bills. My family had a coin jar and when it got full, we would stuff it into these paper cylinders and take it to the bank. Then we would celebrate and go to McDonalds!
I have a lot of memories like this growing up. Remember standing in the layaway line at Shopko? Good times! My parents always provided for us and made sure we had what we needed, but there was always this sense of scarcity. I came to find out later that a lot of this was managed through debt and mortgaging the house again and again.
These experiences and stories impacted my thoughts and feelings around money, but how are they serving me now? What are some of the stories you remember growing up with when it came to money? What about the stories around people who are rich or successful? And to be more specific, what are the limiting beliefs you have created around money? How have they been holding you back in your family or career?
Here is my challenge to you: Think back to one of your first memories around money and really go back to that moment. Think about the feelings you experienced, the people that were there, and the importance they had in your life. Now start following that story through the rest of your life. For example, I had the story that money is hard to come by and you need to work hard to get it. As I followed this through my life, I noticed that I would always squirrel away money. I had a savings fund, but then had some money tucked into my sock drawer. I had my own coin jar. I was afraid to give away my hard-earned money to charities because I was afraid I would end up with nothing.
Once I realized some of the stories, I was carrying around with me, I could then truly see them for what they were – just stories. And guess what, I have the ability to create new stories that will serve me better in the here and now. I can separate money from my emotions and self-worth and understand I am in control of both. I am no longer driven by money, rather I drive my money.
Thank you for allowing me to be real with you~ Anne

People Performance Expert, Shalini Nag, Ph.D.
Learn what Shalini Nag, Ph. D. encourages you to do to improve your business conversations.
In Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in Your Business – Vol  4, Business Author Shalini Nag, Ph.D. shares her wisdom by introducing “Flip the Paradigm: Embrace the Human Approach to Boost Your Business”. Shalini’s research for this chapter is a practical introduction and invitation for you to alter your approach to human experiences through better conversations throughout our business day. I know it sounds simple; however, having a guide for this improvement is essential!
The following is what Shalini Nag, Ph.D. wants to share with you:
5 signs you need to scrutinize your company culture now
Company culture is a vast and complex topic. In fact, studies have shown that while most CEOs agree that culture has a massive impact on their business, the majority also agree that they are not sure when to address their culture, let alone how.
Whether you are the owner of a new business, manage a small team, or lead a large multi-functional organization, here are 5 indicators that your company culture may need a tune-up.
#1 — Financial Performance and Other Metrics are severely impacted by external trends
It is normal for a business to see fluctuations to the bottom line arising from external trends, whether it is seasonality, changing customer demands, or evolving competitor landscape. But if your profits are falling along with metrics like customer satisfaction, quality or you find the organization is slow to adapt to new needs, your organization’s culture could be to blame.
Tip: Assess your culture now, so you can reset the course towards profitability, growth and success.
#2 — Senior leadership team (or founding team) are pulling in different directions
Whether you are a small team in a nascent company or the senior leadership team of a multi-divisional organization, if you find that your priorities and most important goals are in conflict with each other, the rest of the organization will also follow suit. The result – lost time or increased costs due to duplication of effort and rework, lack of collaboration, key tasks falling through the cracks.
Tip: Stop the devolution by reassessing your leadership (or founding) team’s culture at once – this is a problem that gets worse with time.
#3 — Your business strategy is not complemented by a talent strategy
As a business owner or CEO, it is natural that you have put in the time and effort to set the direction of your company. You have most likely created a comprehensive 1-year, 3-year and 5-year strategy that includes financial, product, operational and customer considerations. However, unless you are in the minority, you probably don’t have a talent strategy that ensures that your key initiatives are led by the right individuals, and that you have a proactive plan to attract and retain the best talent.
Tip: Proactively design and implement a data-driven talent strategy that supports your business strategy so you never have to scramble to hire and retain the best people again.
#4 — Issues are often discovered late and are expensive to resolve
Unexpected issues are a standard risk that every business owner and CEO undertakes. After all, no matter how well prepared we are, any business is subject to the vagaries of a fast-changing, interconnected world. However, if you are often faced with issues that make you think, “we could have prevented this if we’d known a little earlier” or “we should have expected and planned for this” your organizational culture may be responsible.
Tip: Create a high-development, collaborative organizational culture so each member of your team feels comfortable highlighting issues that you can work on resolving together.
#5 — You have too many meetings and not enough conversations
“Conversation is the life-blood driving business success.” – Chapter 4, Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner Vol. 4. However, to drive business success, conversations must have a purpose and direction, be timely and relevant to the outcomes that need to be achieved. An excessive number of meetings or interminably long meetings that are poorly managed fail on all counts. They waste time and sap energy without pushing your business forward.
Tip: Shift from “meeting” culture to “conversation” culture so each conversation delivers a key measurable outcome for your business, whether it is generating ideas, delivering results, or building connection.
Identifying the need to assess and shift your organization’s culture is the first step. Then begins the longer journey of envisioning, designing and implementing the steps. It may not be a simple journey but it is one worth making because you will be rewarded with an organizational culture that attracts talented, brilliant people and drives your success instead of holding you back. Thank you~ Shalini

New Post has been published on https://www.brilliantbreakthroughs.com/business-best-practices-2020/
Ready to implement business's best practices in 2020?
Best Practices support your Quest for Excellence – secure this in 2020 to boost your business’s success rate!
Ready to implement business’s best practices in 2020?
Is 2020 your year to implement best practices for your small business? If you’re a Small Business Owner and don’t know what best practices are, this is for you. If you are familiar, read on to reactivate what serves your business’s performance best!
What are Best Practices?
According to the Business Dictionary: A method or technique that has consistently shown results superior to those achieved with other means, and that is used as a benchmark.
Sometimes Business Owners think best practices are their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). They are not. Their may be some overlap between the two; however, the above definition clearly states the method or technique must be superior or a benchmark.
Different industries or specialties have best practices. The food industry has a best practice to prohibit livestock in their kitchen for sanitary reasons. In the United States, you wouldn’t expect to see livestock running in and out of the kitchen while dining.
When Business Owners go into an agreement with others, it is a best practice to have a signed agreement. Agreed? Within the agreement, it is best to name the accountable parties, define the expectations of the agreement, date and sign a copy of the agreement, and provide a copy to both parties. Why is this superior? Most business agreements aren’t contracted appropriately, if at all.
Why do Best Practices Matter?
Best practices are important because they provide a process for you to follow. Through this, you are conducting business in a favorable and professional manner. Did I mention it makes your life easier too?
When you create methods and techniques to consistently follow (SOPs), you standardize your business processes. This creates consistency and consistency creates repetition, which ultimately creates effectiveness and efficiency, or simplicity.
Here’s how it gets cool – consistent processes, create simplicity, which ultimately creates peace for you. This peace of mind, allows you to have enough bandwidth for the other things showing up in business and life.
I know this sounds like SOPs, but their different. Remember, superior or benchmark is the differentiator.
CAUTION: If you’re unfamiliar as to what is best, you may believe each SOP you create qualifies.
Good news! Implementing SOPs will assure you have your business basics in place to accelerate your business growth and improve your business’s success rate.
How to Begin Implementing Best Practices
Here’s where it gets interesting. In order to create a superior or benchmark of a method or technique, you must first create a SOP.
This is where you “Slow down to accelerate” (one of my favorite teaching I’m always quoted on). To do this well, it is necessary to slow down to take notes of each step in your process. Why? It is imperative for you to document each step in the process so you can determine what what is involved for each process. This is how you standardize your process.
Once you’ve completed this, you have your SOP. This is your first step to creating a superior process. Only time will reveal if it is or isn’t. Please notice: documenting your process isn’t verifying if it is favorable or not – it creates an awareness for you to discern if it is favorable or not.
How can you have a SOP that isn’t a Best Practice?
All SOPs are not created equally. When you create an SOP, instinctively you will believe it is a best practice. This is common. It may be or it may not be… this is a little tricky.
The only way to assure it is a best practice is to have an expert within your expertise or specialty, who can verify it is an official best practice instead of an opinion. This is one of the reasons why working with experts is priceless.
Even if you have it verified, please know it may need to change. Funny thing about best practices – they usually evolve or morph. Thus, over time there will be new aspects added to your best practices. It is your job to stay current with them or your practices will become SOPs again.
Best practices support our activities to achieve excellence. As a Small Business Owner, your journey of excellence is in constant pursuit!
NOTE: 2020 is a great time to refine YOUR Business’s SOPs and Best Practices. Through improving your productivity, you will increase your profitability and peacefulness.
TIP: If you want your business to grow gracefully, don’t go into 2021 without this being checked off your Business Performance Booster List!

Allow me to introduce: Kerrie Hoffman

Today’s blogging guest, is Human Potential Expert, Kerrie Hoffman, who is one the members of the Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner #1 Bestselling Book Series Author Team. On November 13, 2019 a group of 8 Brilliant Practicing ExpertsTM  lead by Maggie Mongan, will be releasing their book to coincide with National Entrepreneurs Month. It is written specifically for Small Business Owners, by Small Business Owners, to help you learn how to win BIG at small business in the 21st century!

To give you a glimpse of a couple different chapters, I invited our co-authors to write a short guest blog to learn about why their chapter topic is important to YOUR Business Success.
I’d like to introduce you to Kerrie Hoffman
Learn what Kerrie Hoffman says you need for your business’s Digital Transformation.
In Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in Your Business – Vol  3, Business Author Kerrie Hoffman shares her wisdom by introducing “Digital Mindset Required: Preparing Small Business for a Quantum Leap”. Kerrie’s research for this chapter is a practical introduction and invitation for you to alter your mindset to be prepared for the technological advances, which will ultimately improve the human experience. Of course, if we learn how to adapt to it.
The following is what Kerrie Hoffman wants to share with you:
Why is Business Accelerating?
Business is accelerating, we all feel this on a daily basis. Have you ever stopped to wonder why? This acceleration is largely due to rapid development of new technologies. In fact, technology is now being released at an exponential rate. Yet the adoption of these new technologies is lagging.
The impact this has on our businesses is profound. Do you have things in your business which used to work really well and now not so much? Why is this the case?
From the Industrial Age to The Next Age™
We are moving out of the Industrial Age and into The Next Age™. The way business is conducted when industry moves from one age to the next is drastically different. I like to say we are moving from Traditional Business in the Industrial Age to Digital Business in The Next Age™.
How is Digital Business Different?
The first question is how is Digital Business drastically different from Traditional Business? Business is becoming extremely Customer centric, increasingly mobile, and very high velocity. The two latter descriptors are somewhat intuitive. Let’s focus on understanding Extreme Customer Centricity.
Extreme Customer Centricity means understanding our customer at a very deep level. In fact, every employee in your business should have regular contact with the customer. This consistency of customer contact is an opportunity to understanding our customers issues.
And if you work with B2B customers, meaning they also have customers, it’s an opportunity to understand your customer’s, customers issues. Extreme Customer centricity then takes it one step further by adjusting our business models, products and services to solve those customer issues.
What’s the Best Way to Start Transforming to Digital Business?
Earlier I mentioned an exponential growth in technology causing business to accelerate. In order to effortlessly move into the stream of accelerated business, the gap of adopting exponential technologies must be closed. One of the best ways to close the gap and start on your path to Digital Business is to cultivate a Digitally Expanded Mindset™.
There are 5 aspects to a Digitally Expanded Mindset™:
Individual and organizational behaviors and attitudes, which ultimately see the possibility in the digital era. You must believe digital is within reach as a prerequisite to taking any action.
A belief in the power of modern technology to systematize, scale, and speed up every interaction.
An abundance mentality is collaborative, open, appreciative, and trusting. The traditional business world is built on a mentality of scarcity.
Comfort with ambiguity is necessary as there is an enormous amount of ambiguity during any transformation. According to The Business Dictionary, the word transformation is defined as, “a process of profound and radical change that orients an organization in a new direction and takes it to an entirely different level of effectiveness” (http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/transformation.html, para. 1).
Having a growth outlook in Digital Business means you are an explorer, have agility, adjust to change, thrive in diversity, and seek resources and answers.
Kerrie Hoffman Emphasizes: Be Open to the Possibilities – the Opportunity is Immense
The main point of today’s blog is two-fold. First to understand business is changing dramatically as we move to Digital Business in The Next Age™. The Second is to be open to the possibilities by understanding there is a dramatic difference between Traditional Business and Digital Business, and to start cultivating a Digitally Expanded Mindset™.
It will take many years for businesses to make the move to The Next Age™. Those choosing to remain in the Industrial Age will decline over time. Some have already made the move and have accelerated into the Digital Flow. The opportunity for those moving now is immense and will accelerate their growth. ~Kerrie
