Tristan teaches the sword move to Ygraine in a moment of exasperation, really.
Of course, it not only looks fancy, but it also does help to re-balance the blade, and no matter that he would never admit so out loud, he would teach Ygraine just about anything to keep her safe.
In this particular instance, it is more that she has been nagging him about it for weeks, though, and so, unsurprisingly, he does finally cave on a sunny October afternoon, after making her promise not to pass it on to anyone.
---
Ygraine teaches Uther because she knows jealousy when she sees it.
It’s not as if he couldn’t figure it out himself, but she knows it’s a matter of pride, more than anything else—Uther Pendragon cannot be seen copying his wife’s sword work, after all.
Something stings beneath her breastbone when she does; the easy twist of a wrist, but the heavy memory of a brother who had spent hours to make her understand it, upon a promise that this would be theirs.
She ignores it; at least like this, there might be one thing that counts as hers, counts as having been brought into this relationship from her side, even as she is married off to a king.
---
Uther teaches Arthur when he is still too young for an actual sword and wields one regardless.
It is a concession, of sorts, even though Arthur will not come to understand this until many years later, and at least to Uther Pendragon, it is not.
The De Bois family has always been known for their skills with a blade; it would do well for Arthur to carry a mark of their legacy.
Of course, that does not mean he needs to know where the easy swirl comes from that Uther forces into his movements.
In fact, he will not find out for a very long time.
---
Arthur teaches Morgana throughout secret meetings.
Unlike Morgana’s father, Uther has never approved of her lessons in swordsmanship; Arthur would like to claim that his disagreement is based on something fundamental, but truth be told, he simply thinks it isn’t worth fighting with her over this, too.
She thanks him with a brittle smile and angry eyes, but it is an improvement from the poison-drenched words she has been spitting at him ever since Gorlois’ death.
Arthur is intimately familiar with that kind of pain, but he never brings it up, lessons in how to kill someone easier than any admittance of grief or loneliness.
He simply keeps teaching her, until her wrist twists as easily as his own.
---
Morgana offers to teach Gwen once and gets laughed at for her trouble. It is not an unkind laugh, but it is a revelation, all the same.
After all, it is not a move executed solely for how it looks, but it is useful, too. As is the nature of anything useful, the De Bois and Pendragon families have not, in fact, been the only ones aware of it.
As a blacksmith’s daughter, Gwen would know; Morgana finds herself more pleased by this than she perhaps should be.
---
Ygraine marks her time in Avalon by the threats to her son’s life, and how many of those are preceded by an easy movement of the wrist that carries the blade aiming for his heart.
Twenty-seven years after a brother showed his sister his most recent skill, his undead form does its best to slay father and son—one for his crimes, one for his offence of existence.
The sting of her husband, the one who condemned her, mirroring the movements her brother taught her is like yet another slap to the face.
Twenty-eight years later, a son uses the twirl of his sword against his own father, retribution justified by the sins written in blood and tears, but never fully executed; a servant, not part of this story, stalling his hand.
Thirty years, and a sister stands against her brother, swords held in the same position. The parallel is distorted, wrong, and Ygraine watches, and she aches and aches and aches.
Thirty-one years, and her own brother almost kills her son. She has no doubt it would be preceded by the same movement, and it is then that Ygraine stops watching, grief like its own blade piercing her heart.
---
In the end, Gwen is the only one left. She carries her crown as Ygraine once had, and her sword as Arthur may not have taught her, but how she knows he would have, all the same.
After all, Camelot has always been defined more by its Queens than by its Kings, the truth of it glinting in the movement of a blade swirled around a wrist that is already losing its association to the name Pendragon again.

yes but have we considered nancy being resentful of stobin in the beginning of s4 because nancy has lost some of her only friends and even johnathan is pulling away but here are steve and robin. the trauma and the monsters didnt split them apart, it drew them together as friends.
it isn't like pool parties or impromptu investigations. they are still there, still laughing. but steve didn't get it when nancy lost barb, and even now he still doesnt get it. he has someone who means the world when nancy's already had her's hollowed out

guy who's stuck in a timeloop for so long he stops wanting to leave it. guy who started out trying to escape but slowly grew used to and became comforted by the familiarity of the repeating day. guy who is no longer who he was before the timeloop. guy who is offered a way out and violently refuses it because he can't leave, doesn't want to leave. guy who escapes the timeloop by chance or force or accident and doesn't know how to live anymore. guy who keeps going through motions that don't match the situation and keeps having conversations that aren't actually occurring. guy who panics every time he realizes he can't predict the next instant. guy who left the timeloop but still lives with it.

so i’m rewatching bits and pieces of s4 for fic reasons and it’s hitting me all over again how and why nancy reacts to robin the way she does before and during the library scene. like! nancy has spent every season having to justify why she thinks what she does or, more often than not, fight with someone to try to pursue her theories. barb is missing and no one is listening to her. barb’s death was unfair but steve thinks they should just keep living their lives normally. she knows there’s a story with mrs driscoll but everyone, jonathan included, is telling her to drop it.
so of course in s4 when she has this idea in the back of her mind, her first instinct is to pursue it alone. even though the others are right there, and they know what’s going on. she still thinks no one will believe her, and she’d rather just do it herself than have someone try to tell her no.
and when robin comes with her nancy thinks that she was right, that robin is just another person who is going to doubt her theories and fight her about whether this is worth their time. except, robin does believe her, she’s just trying to get the information she needs to keep up with nancy. and once they finally get on the same wavelength, everything clicks. robin not only supports nancy’s theory, she takes it and runs with it, and suddenly they have the foundation they need to figure out everything.
and what gets me even more is that, from that moment on, nancy keeps robin at her side. she’s keeping an eye out for her, standing near her in the group, letting her ride shotgun. even when she doesn’t fully trust robin at pennhurst, she still chooses her. and robin proves her wrong again, so nancy keeps choosing her and keeps trusting her.
idk man i just love how strong their dynamic is, and how clear it is that this is good for both of them. for robin to have someone other than steve see her and accept her and care so deeply for her after being the odd one out at the end of s3. and for nancy to have someone finally in her corner, supporting her and believing in her without trying to get with her. they fit so well and their arc in s4 is such a treat, i love it so much
