Drosera in Bloom
This little tropical Drosera has lost track of its location in New England. Many carnivorous plants seem to have small but lovely flowers, and this one is enjoying a spring day in the cold frame.

Camping Tonight
I once tried to total up the time I had spent camping. My attempt to play auditor ended with me drowsing off long before I approached the days when my wife and I took the kids on long trips to Maine.  If we were free on a weekend, off we’d go. We’d pack the brood into the car for a trip. It was cheap, fun, and enriching for the kids. On the trips, no museum, nature trail, or cheap attraction…

Making a Mess
I don’t get it. The photos of people’s studios are so neat and clean. Do people work at art and craft there? Sure, I clean up (eventually), but making something out of wood requires removing shavings, chips, and dust. The essence is removal; all that removal has to go somewhere – the bench and the floor – via the broom out the door. Work and projects pile up. OK, here it is—mea culpa—what a…

Satisfaction
Stream of Consciousness Saturday – April 27, 2024 Next weekend, I’ll be showing my work along with other local artists in the Cultural Council’s spring art exhibit. As a result, I am going through boxes of stuff left over from the last actual show I did two years ago. There is a range of goodies – spoons, spatulas, forks, cutting boards, bowls, signs, small boxes, and boat portraits. That’s…

Fishy
My buddy from my Navy days was a petty officer named Mahan. Mahan’s wife, Stella, is the story’s focus- and I’d better let you know at the beginning that Stella is a mermaid – elegant tail and all.* Neither family was thrilled with the match. The Mahans wished Walt had married an Irish Shidhe, one of the Irish Fae. Stella’s fishy relatives wondered why a denizen of the deep had not been good…

End of the Road
Among a close set of my friends, the term “end of the road” had a distinctive meaning. “I’ve hit the end of the road!” meant you were leaving our close little circle of travelers. Most often, it meant you were putting your pack down in your girlfriend’s apartment for connubial bliss. We’d sip a glass of fine Irish Whiskey, ceremoniously state another one has bit the dust, and get on with our…

It's Spring!
That’s right. It’s here in New England. – Spring! The trout lilies are blooming, and the peach tree is flowering. Last year, a freak frost took all the cherries and peaches I bud—right around this date. 26 degrees was the right temperature to kill the flower. But wait…frost is predicted for tonight. 26 degree. SHIT!!!!! Yes, it’s spring in New England!

Angel
This little folk art-style angel is a sort of Christmas-time dreamcatcher. It swings above our Christmas tree every year. I carved it one winter years ago when the kids were still little.

The Subway Ride
It’s a stereotype that New Yorkers mind their own business, stick their noses into the Daily News, and pay no attention to what’s going on on the other side of the subway car. It’s not true. They are very aware of what’s going on and nervously waiting to see if the infection will spread to their area of the car. It takes a lot of bravery for one person to stand up against a group of thugs. The…

Nocturnal
Winter is my least favorite season. I need little excuse to keep the Christmas lights up till Saint Valentine’s Day. They make the nocturnal hours a bit more bearable.
