Beginning: The Supernaturals, The Humans And Their Universe
[ chapter summary ] a look into the worlds of human, supernatural and the one they share with each other.
The world is a diverse mix of humans and supernaturals. The census shows that for every ten humans, there is one supernatural.
Inherently, supernaturals lived in the deep interiors or in the far outskirts where humans didn’t pry around much and let them enjoy their privacy. With time, many have travelled out and have found a place in the metropolitans among humans but there’s still a considerable gap.
There are conglomerates owned by the supernaturals but most of the employees are human and only a few supernaturals actually take up jobs in these corporations, many just choose to operate as pack workers.
Years ago though, there weren’t many supernaturals around the metropolitans and the ones that lived there kept to themselves away from supernatural societal trouble. While the kinds of supernaturals crossed paths a lot, they never caused trouble.
Because misbehavior brought attention, which meant they’d probably be outed to the largely dangerous human population who somehow managed to morph themselves into ruthless hunters without an ounce of supernatural powers.
If not for the World Supernatural Organization, the WSO who always made it seem like humans needed protection and created the illusion that humans were weak, there would have been a war centuries ago and the world would have only one of the two species living; probably the humans, but no supernatural ever agrees to that.
There’s a pact in the WSO that has been there for decades, almost a century now, that humans will be protected with conditions, of course by the supernaturals no matter which species of supernatural someone belonged to.
Humans wouldn’t and shouldn’t be harmed unless they caused harm first and if they did, there’s a way to meet that end.
Every supernatural species then has their own laws that they abide by and what they consider harm. The WSO looks over the terms and agrees to what is acceptable and provides correction, if necessary.
It’s a full-blown system of supernatural law and society.
Over sixty percent of the supernatural population are shapeshifters; were-wolves, were-panthers, were-coyotes, were-snakes and other similar kinds while the rest are vampires, faeries, witches, hybrids and many more.
Werewolves were the majority, being a little over quarter of the whole population and with their number, they had the advantage of having bigger spaces allocated to them, more known as territories.
Most of the resources and territories belonged to them, which wasn’t a problem because very few kinds of supernaturals needed territories. Many just needed a little bit of their-space where they could be their supernatural self and not be seen by humans, which the werewolves granted them, with protection because as time went by, many wolves found their mates, their other halves in other species.
The protection was a gesture of friendship, promise and gratitude; friendship because werewolves rarely stop at one, promise to protect and love their kin and gratitude for letting them love their mate as werewolves were one of the very few species that mate for life and probably the only one without the freedom to choose their mate.
If a werewolf bonded to you, it’s because their wolf bonded to you, the moon goddess wanted them to be yours.
It wasn’t exact science, but the werewolves were too blind in love to ever poke around this phenomenon.
Mate bonds aside, something that’s very abiding to the werewolves is protecting their territories and it’s subjects, both humans and supernaturals alike. They patrolled their territories, took precautions to ensure its safety, trained themselves in military warfare to do just that; protect their boundaries.
So, when viciously mutilated bodies started turning up at the boundary lines, the wolves are worried. Then, the bodies started appearing inside their territories.
Finding dead bodies was severely daunting for any wolf, especially when the dead bodies belonged to humans and their deaths aren’t natural. The human equivalent would be finding dead bodies in your home. It’s scary, having your safety net pierced through and shredded to pieces.
If it’s scary for the pack members, it’s especially alarming for the pack alphas and the pack police.
Their role as being the protectors and the caretakers of the pack is being questioned. It is serious enough for their rational human side but there’s law enforcements, human and supernatural ones, to set that straight for them.
But the wolf side, the side that revels in being animalistic, instinctual and territorial, hates it and the helplessness and the sense of failure that came with waiting till the criminal was caught.
Death couldn’t be meddled with and stalled, even by them.
If it had been the dead bodies of people dying because of expected reasons like health issues, accidents, natural disasters etc, it would’ve been just fine. They were supernaturals but not above nature in any way.
But when dead bodies started turning up in groups of three or more, looking like blood has been drained off them, with odd bite marks and missing flesh and organs, the alarm bells were bound to ring; especially when the world is filled with multiple species of supernaturals who are capable of bringing upon such a vicious end to humans.
While the werewolves tried to solve the cases, the media heavily influenced by the government, chalked up various theories. Human organs trafficking, serial killers, cult rituals, aliens all were possible theories and the public seemed to eat it all up.
The government tried their best to keep the public calm and pressured the police to solve the case but nothing came out of it. Soon, when all cause was lost and the government was lost without a way, the case was discreetly handed over to the supernaturals.
It took the wolves a while though, with the human law enforcement trying their best to solve the cases, the evidence not being shared to non-human government organizations and it took a lot of string pulling for the higher-ups to finally let the supernatural government system handle the cases.
Once the bodies and the other evidences collected were handed over to the supernaturals, it was easy to find out who the culprits were. On closer inspection of the dead bodies, puncture wounds were found and the consensus had been so clear that even the suspected species of supernaturals could not say no.
It had been a possibility even before the bodies were handed over. So, when autopsies were conducted and the suspicions came true, the Vampire Association was called for.
The Vampire Association is an union of vampire leaders and other vampire officials from different clans from every part of the world to represent the vampires in WSO. With the Vampire Association involved, there was more evidence and clarifications.
It was a vampire’s doing but the Association pressed on that the said vampire or the group of vampires were rogues.
According to them, no sane vampire would drink human blood because of all the risks involved with drinking human blood and consuming human flesh. Human hunting has also been deemed to be against the law. They said that over the years, not consuming human blood has become a moral thing in the vampire world, meaning the only time one probably crosses that line is if they are insane.
Then, further studies revealed that there were more than one vampire venom found. They opined that it might be a vampire cult or the group was going through mass psychosis or a rabid vampire coven, or they were just sick and evil people.
No matter the culprit, the Bangtan were incharge of stopping them.
Bangtan is the ruling werewolf pack of Korea.
The seven wolf brothers were the next-in-line to become the leaders of the werewolf population. When their eldest had turned twenty, they were given Seoul, a relatively quiet territory to govern and patrol over.
The troubles in the city were mainly the humans, nothing supernatural ever caused trouble in the concrete jungle, so the next-in-line alphas always started from looking after that territory and expanded over the district in a few years. Once they did well and found a mate, they could ascend to the Alpha title.
That’s the norm.
Bangtan had been reigning over Seoul for a few years now and only recently have they taken over the neighbouring district.
So far, nothing has happened that might’ve worried them about having their secrets exposed to the world. There has never been a supernatural mishap in their territory, never. They did their job well but when the dead bodies started turning up nearly every few blocks, they knew something was very wrong.
Alarm bells were ringing loudly in Bangtan’s minds as they read through the multiple files on the table detailing how every human so far was murdered.
“This is fucking brutal,” Jin scoffed, throwing yet another autopsy file on the table. “What even is the point of this savagery?” He asked to no one in particular, making his brothers look at him.
“They are just sick bloodsuckers, Hyung,” Jungkook said, “I don’t know why we are so desperately looking for logic here,”
“Because if they are proved to be insane, their punishments will be lenient.” Yoongi offered calmly, “We need to make sure that these evil fuckers are punished appropriately,” He looked up at them from his file, “—by death if we can help it.”
“I don’t get it, Hyung,” Jungkook said looking at Namjoon, “Why can’t we just kill them all?” His doe eyes wide with innocence completely inappropriate for the question he was asking, “They’ve killed hundreds of innocent people! No one’s gonna stop us if we choose to decapitate them or put them through a meat-grinder.”
“The Vampire Association will,” Jin said and the youngest rolled his eyes.
“For how much they hinder other species from exercising their rights, they sure do make sure that their kind can use all theirs.” He muttered to himself, continuing loudly, “No one cares for the humans dying, other species losing sleep trying to stop them! The bastards won’t even help us track the coven! Why are they even a respectable part of our world?”
“Because bad people are everywhere, among them, among us and among others.” Namjoon simply smiled, “No matter how horrendous a living being gets—”
“They are a part of the undead,” Taehyung interrupted him, making the others snicker and cast his gaze down to his file once the older wolf glared at him. “Sorry, go on.”
“No matter how horrendous someone behaves, there will always be people who feel sorry for them.” He said, “Some will say it was their nature to do it, some will say it’s their nurture that led them there. No matter who did it, why they did it, there will always be someone who sees the good in them and the bad in their circumstances. And when the criminals are our own, we will find ways to help them, despite their crimes.”
“You are talking about yourself.” Hoseok have him a thumbs-up, fake smiling widely. "You are the one feeling bad for them,”
“What?” Namjoon sounds offended, “I don’t feel bad for them! I feel bad for us and our pack for having us as their Alphas!”
“We are trying, aren’t we?” Hoseok counters back, “It’s not me who wants to sit here and search for logic in their brutality!”
“We have no other choice,” Jin tries to placate the stewing argument. "Atleast if we prove their sanity, we can get an attack order. That way we can burn them down to ashes and no one will ask questions."
“If we wait longer, more will die!” Hoseok presses on, standing up and looking at the rest. “Let’s just attack and burn them to the ground first, then we can discuss why we did what we did.”
“But where will you attack, Hobi?” Jin asks, tiredly, “Do you know where they are hiding?”
"If we start taking action into our own hands —there wouldn't be need for a justice system, Hobi. Everyone will—" Namjoon says, sounding incredulous at his brother's plan of just attacking the criminals.
“What is happening here?” Seojun’s loud voice interrupted their loud conversation. He looks at Hoseok, who is almost in Namjoon's face. “Were you trying to rip your brother’s throat?”
“Namjoon thinks the bastards deserve an insanity plea,” Hoseok tells the older man, sounding like a tattling child, “He thinks the vampire coven, a group of more than ten people are either going through a mass-pshycosis or being led by a madman who doesn’t know what he is doing,”
“Why do you think they deserve the insanity plea, Namjoon?” He turns to the other, “Surely, you don’t think what they did is forgivable?”
“I don’t think they deserve forgiveness, samchun. What they did is unforgivable—” He sighs, frustrated at himself, “But, look at all these—,” He pointed at every report and packets of evidence gathered, “And tell me that whoever is doing this knows what the are doing,” Namjoon continued, “Tell me that they are sane and are doing all this because they are evil!”
“They know exactly what they are doing,” Hoseok snarled, elaborating at the look on the older man’s face.
“Why isn’t there more evidence? If they are as erratic as Namjoon thinks they are, then shouldn’t they be careless?” He raised a brow, “How are the places where the bodies were found so clean? Why were the bodies cleaned up so thoroughly that it took their own kind months to find concrete proof? Why were no stronger supernaturals killed? None of the wolves died, no vampires, no weres, no one who could fight them was attacked!” He took a breath, “They carefully planned and attacked weaker beings, humans.”
“What do you have to say for that, Namjoon?”
“Samchun, I’m not saying they shouldn’t be convicted and punished, I am merely stating that all this is circumstantial evidence,” He sighs loudly, frustrated that all their combined frustration at not being able to find concrete evidence is turning on him.
"But—" Taehyung looked at them, very much like a curious child in a classroom, "Doesn't cleaning up the dead bodies of their DNA after the attack mean that atleast once they were done, there was a brief period of time where they were in their senses?" He looks at Namjoon, "Isn't that tampering with dead bodies, which is a crime?"
"Yeah hyung," Jimin adds, "If they were able to clean corpses, transport them to a place under heavy surveillance without getting caught —I'd say they know what they are doing."
“Namjoon-ah,” Hoseok exhaled, frustrated at his brother's kind tendencies, “Nothing will change the fact they are murderers! How many families were torn apart because they decided it was kill-day for them? How many kids lost their parents? How many parents lost their kids? How many people lost their partners?"
“And what do the rest of you think?” Seojun turns to look at the others, like he was teaching and trying to get answers out of his students. “Do you agree with Namjoon?”
"I don't agree with Namjoon essentially, samchun—" Jin starts, making Namjoon frown, almost pout uncharacteristically at him, "But, I also don't agree with Hobi."
"We can't just attack them." Suga agrees with his Hyung, "We will get in trouble with the WSO and the VA will naturally make it about vampires being burnt than the hundreds of humans the vampires have killed. We don't want that attention shift."
"I actually agree with Hobi Hyung," Jimin shares a look with the others, continuing, "We should probably attack first —but of course, we don't know where they are hiding, so maybe we should track them first?"
"Then what will we tell the WSO?" Seojun asks knowing Namjoon wants to ask the question.
“We’ve been at this for hours, samchun!” Hoseok snaps, “Every minute we waste here, there’s someone’s life in danger and we, as the alphas can’t do shit!”
"I know," Seojun pats him on his shoulder, "—and I understand your frustrations but keep in mind that we can't just do things our way when different species are involved. If all of us did what we naturally wanted to do, all of us would be hunted down to extinction."
"We live in a diverse society and when we cross paths with others we need to be respectful and cautious —especially when the species are historically our enemies." Seojun looked at the young men around him.
“I need you to know that finding them isn’t enough —atleast for now.” The wolves look at him, questioning what his words meant, “They haven’t hurt any supernatural and according to the statute of inter-species, we technically can’t harm them. We can’t even scratch them and justify it by saying they killed hundreds of humans —because to the WSO, humans are still not over supernaturals. The best we can do for now is try to find them alive and present them to the system and make sure they are atleast punished the legal way.”
“Is there no way we can kill them ourselves?” Jungkook asks the older man, “I mean, we kinda deserve it. They caused our pack so much trauma—”
“If they kill one of us,” Seojun smirks when the boy’s face drops, “Then, we could agrue —limb for a nail and kill them ourselves!” He smiles, “But is it worth losing one of our own to get the chance to burn them?”
“Not worth it,” Taehyung sighs, “I’d rather all of us stay alive and take longer to punish them through the legal system.”
“Exactly my thoughts,” Seojun smiles, “What I was here to tell you is—”
“That you are bringing your mate home finally?” Jimin grins cheekily at the older man.
“Not exactly that,” Seojun looks surprised, “But how did you know that I was planning to bring her home?”
“I just do!” Jimin looked proud of himself.
Jungkook tattled, “He eavesdropped on your conversation with Abeoji,”
“I could’t help it, samchun,” Jimin pouts, “—you know, with my heightened hearing and all,”
“You totally could, you brat!” Seojun snips, “—and keep this quiet till I come back from the mission. Then, you can meet my mate.”
“What mission, samchun?” Hoseok asks, “Do you want us to come with you? I volunteer!”
“No need, Hobi. Stay here and help the pack out.” Seojun says. "—while I go and sniff these bloodsuckers out."
Weeks after Yoo Seojun had left to track the coven down, he brought information regarding the coven's hideout.
The coven were in an abandoned asylum —known to be haunted in the locality. There were years of disappearances, ghost sightings and more creepy behaviour in the area and locals just stayed away from the place, especially once the night set.
They were apparently headed by an old-blood vampire —it looked like the vampire and his croonies were addicted to human blood and were apparently indulging in the forbidden meat.
The asylum housed hundreds of vampires, both new and old-blood ones, though it was clear that there was a obvious bias and hierarchy set in place. Seojun relayed that people were being taken in, but it was unclear as to where they were being kept and how they were transporting them to their dumpsites.
There were no screams per say, but cheers and celebrations of the residents. They were nocturnal but it was something the wolves expected. In daylight, the place was eerily quiet and once the night set, it was like the place burst with life.
There hadn't been children sighted at the camp, but there were many older vampires. The place smelled of infestations, decay and death. Seojun relayed that the air itself seemed poisonous and all the soldiers might need to be given antidotes before the attack.
The more details Seojun sent, the more restless the wolves became.
The more days he stayed away collecting information, the more plans and resources were being set in place. How anyone who were rescued would be treated and cared for, what would happen to people they couldn't save, how the vampires will be kept, how to be best attack them —everything regarding the mission was being thought of and the attack date pushed ahead and ahead until they had no choice but to attack.
Yoo Seojun was found dead, along with a woman who was later identified as his mate —oddly, their corpses were in perfect condition, almost like they were embalmed and ready to set in a coffin.
The wolves didn't know what to think of it —a warning? a threat? were they caught? Was this disrespectful? Were they being merciful? But with Seojun and his mate's death, both of whom are protected under the inter-species statue —the wolves now had a kill-on-sight order for the coven.
Now, the wolves had a reason to go crazy. The wolves had a reason be cruel. They had a reason to tear them apart limb by limb.
Now, this was personal.
On the decided date, all the pack warriors, hunters, gatherers, sentinels, healers, salutaries, trackers and scouts were at the pack house. They had been in there practicing, planning and getting ready for this mission.
As the time arrived, all of them gathered for one last conversation.
"Did everyone take the second dose of antidotes given to you?" Suga asked the wolves, who replied in affirmative. "If you haven't, take it immediately. That way, if you have a reaction, we can treat you."
"Are you all geared up?" Hoseok looked around, as the leader of warrior wolves he always led such missions. The wolves chorused their answers, "You have taken your antidotes, have a vial of anti-venom in case of emergency and are in perfect condition?" The wolves agreed and Hoseok turned to Namjoon. "—let's run over our plan one last time."
"Hunters and Warriors will go in first when the signal device activates and clear the way for Trackers and Scouts, who will find the injured and transport them back to the Healers outside. Once you see the victims being brought out, Healers will call for more help that's waiting outside the perimeter." He takes a look at Yoongi who nods his agreement, "Every bloodsucker will be killed and any other species will be treated as victims." Namjoon recited.
"Before going in, decide which form you want to fight in. Choose the most comfortable one." Hoseok quips, "If you want weapons, take them with you. If you bite them, go for their necks —biting any other part is useless."
"Try not to ingest their blood. You have the medications in you but the shit can get you sick once they wear off." Suga added, "If you are hurt, get help. If you need help, mind-link. Keep your mind-links open at all times, keep in touch with us, your leaders and the healers outside."
"I hope you know the intricacies of what we are heading into." Jin said. "Our mission is also about getting every injured human out, taking care of them and returning the deceased ones to their families so that they can be mourned and put to rest."
"Yes, alpha." The wolves chorused, making him nod solemnly.
"This is going to be a brutal mission," Jin continued, his heart fearing trauma on the wolves. "We can get you help after this mission, okay?"
"You show them no mercy," Hoseok pressed on, "They showed none to their victims. Rip them apart if you want to. I won't advocate any sort of respect for them." Hoseok could hear the noise of disapproval Namjoon made behind him, but he didn't care. "We lost our bravest warrior to their madness and it's time we avenge him!" The wolves roared at the thought of their fallen warrior, "We need to make his sacrifices worth it."
"Keep your mind-links open at all times. You will never lose contact with the ones outside, if you do —you get back outside immediately." Namjoon said, "Once we are all out and the vampires are dead, we collect evidence and burn the place down to the ground."
"What about the sentinels?" Hoseok looks at the youngest three, "Have you delegated their duties?"
"Yes, Hyung." Taehyung said, Jungkook adding, "Everything is set."
"We leave in an hour," Hoseok said determined. "Let's only use our mind-links from now on."
Everything about the mission had gone as planned till the very end.
It was probably the most stressful yet easiest mission the pack had ever been on. The pack had travelled to the asylum in the dark and quiet and hid out till the signalling device went off.
On the last day, right before his death, Seojun had crept into the back of the building and set in place a timer-device of sort that went off and emitted a paralyzing drug that would smoke the area and immobilize the vampires for a few minutes.
The wolves having taken precautions were immune to it ac the minute, the smoke appaered, they knew it was game time.
The alphas lead the Hunters and Warriors into the run-down building, attacking, beheading and ripping the throats of any and every vampire that came their way.
"Goddess! These fuckers smell like death!" One wolf cursed, as he pushed his long nails into the chest of the vampire, pulling him apart.
"Their faces alone make me wanna puke!" A she-wolf made a disgusted face at the vampire bodies, lying around after some wolves had gone through them.
Halfway through, the paralyzer bega losing its effect and the vampires began waking up and attacking the wolves back. The wolves tried to make good use of their half-awske state and killed as many as possible, till the paralyzer completely wore off.
Then, most of them turned into their wolf forms to be able to get more energy and because the numbers were in the wolves favor now, two wolves took one vampire —all the while, Trackers and Scouts found injured and dead people inside and took them out to get help.
Hoseok, possibly the best warrior of the present pack was taking multiple vampires at a time, in his half-man-half wolf state, using his long nails and teeth, to injure them deeply but not enough to die and ultimately tearing them and leaving them in shreds.
Namjoon and Jin used their silver, poison coated guns and knives to harm the vampires, trying not get the enemies blood on them literally.
Suga stayed outside, giving emergency help to the victims and sending them away to the pack hospitals for more care and surgery.
Jimin and his trackers were tracking down injured people and carrying them out to the healers, while Jungkook, Taehyung and their team attacked and carried out dead victims, so that they could be put to rest respectfully.
It was nearing early morning when the mission neared an end.
From the looks of it, the vampires were gone. All the victims seemed to have reached the hospital and the ones who needed help were getting it as they speak.
Most of the victims could be saved and the ones lost would be handed over to their family or if they didn't have any, the pack would see to it that they laid in peace.
Now only one last thing was left to do, burn the place down.
Namjoon had opined during one of their initial meetings that burning the asylum wasn't necessary. He thought they could just study the place and get more knowledge and information regarding the vampires that lived there.
But the pack didn't want any of it.
The coven had terrorized the pack so much that no one wanted anything to do with it after the mission and Namjoon had to agree to have it burnt.
Jin had reasoned with him saying this would ensure that no vampire would get out from there and start to go on a revenge journey.
As the pack gathered all of the vampires —counting and doing the final checks for their reports, the alphas felt discomfort.
The whole day they did feel anxious but they had thought it was the mission that made them feel that way, but even with the apparent victory the boys still felt bothered, like they were doing something wrong.
But they ignored it, simply continuing to look around the place and gathering evidence for the upcoming case.
The wolves took pictures and emptied the shelves, rooms and everything of what they thought might be relevant to the case. These evidences will be studied further by the WSO and hopefully, such things would be prevented in the future.
“Namjoon-ah,” Jin called, his heart and stomach clenching oddly at the thought of burning the building down. “Can we take one last look inside?” The boys around him looked confused.
“What?” Yoongi looked shocked at the older’s request. “Why?”
“Hyung! No,” Jimin said, “Let’s get this over with! I can’t the stench of them any longer,”
“Hyung, let’s not waste time like that!” Taehyung was saying as he held a hoodie to his arm, to stop the bleeding from his injury. “We need to get our packmates to a healer, Hyung. Their wounds might look small but the goddess alone knows what their infected venom does to werewolves.”
“Hyung! But we just looked inside!” Jungkook said, eyes wide. “All the humans inside were taken away. It’s only those bloodsuckers anyway! If we don’t burn them now, they can escape!”
“Please,” Jin looked close to begging on his knees, “I don’t know what it is, I just want to look inside once. Something feels wrong!” He exclaimed, looking at them, panting. “My wolf’s going crazy at the thought of burning this place down. It won’t take long! I’ll take a quick look inside, and I’ll be back and then we can burn this place.” He said, in hopes of convincing the boys.
“O-kay, Hyung,” Namjoon said looking at him in worry, “But one of us goes with you.”
“I’ll go with you, Hyung,” Hoseok said, motioning Jin to lead the way. “C'mon.” Jin nodded hurriedly and ran into the building, not sparing anyone else a second glance.
The boys looked on wondering why their wolves felt just as restless as Jin’s wolf.
Why were they feeling like something was amiss? Like they had left their heart inside to die?
Jin ran inside making full use of his supernatural speed, checking every dingy room, kicking every large thing around as if they’re hiding something inside them. Hoseok wanted to prod but it didn’t look like Jin would listen. He seemed lost in himself searching for whatever it was he was searching.
There was an urgency in the way he was being so reckless about lifting and shoving things around, something so different from the usual gentle Hyung he knew. It took some time, but when the duo reached downstairs again, Jin looked visibly more frustrated and helpless than earlier.
“There’s nothing?” Hoseok asked his brother.
Jin looked unsatisfied at the lack of results. He shook his head, as if that would reconfirm to his wolf that there really was nothing inside.
“Want to take another look?” He asked, placing his palm on his shoulder, with a sympathetic look. Jin was clearly distressed.
“Can- Can we?” Jin asked, panting and sweating heavily.
“Of course, Hyung.” The male smiled softly, “But, you’ve got to tell me what you are searching for?”
His voice was calm and he was being as soft as possible. He wanted to know what he was searching for, so that he knew how to help. He had a suspicion, but he hoped it wasn’t right.
“I- I don’t know,” Jin said, running his hand through his hair, “My wolf just says it’s important and I’d regret it if I didn’t look and that time’s running out! He- He won’t say more.” He was still looking around, trying to find something.
“Hyung,” Hoseok called the man. When he didn’t reply, he called again. “Hyung!” He called loudly, shaking the man, by grabbing his shoulders.
“Hyung, you need to focus! Deep breath, take a deep breath! Close your eyes and focus on your breathing, okay?” He directed the older wolf, hands holding him firmly by the shoulders.
When Jin calmed down slightly and met eyes with him, he said, “Now, ask your wolf if he knows what he’s searching for?” Jin nodded, and went silent for a moment.
“He says he doesn’t know.” Jin’s voice was pained, like he was frustrated with himself. “Ask him what makes him think something is left behind.”
“Instinct.” Jin hissed out and Hoseok barely stops himself from rolling his eyes. He knew and admitted that out of them all, Jin was the one most in tune with his wolf. It was the whole reason they let Jin come back in.
If Jin’s wolf said something was wrong because his instinct said so, something was definitely wrong. He was the one with the most wolf-like instinct and the one best at being able to control it.
But that also meant, his wolf was equally controlling of his human side. His wolf could take control and cause a rampage because something in his ingrained instinct felt wrong.
Like right now. Jin was clearly struggling to control his wolf, with how his eyes were flickering gold and how sometimes he mumbled about finding something in a deeper voice, something that happened when wolves took over their human self. He was clutching painfully onto Hoseok’s shoulder trying to keep calm. He quickly mind-linked his brothers outside.
“It’s taking longer than expected. Stay alert.”
“Hyung, I want you to promise me to keep your wolf in check, and to not block us out, okay? you’ll take a deep breath every time and try to find it. Okay?”
“What- want if we don’t find it?” Jim whispered with a gulp, his eyes going its usual brown for a few seconds.
“We’ll stay here till your wolf calms down,” Hobi’s voice was determined, “If we find whatever you’re searching for, great! If not, we keep our butts here and calm your big boy down.” He gave him a small smile and it widened when he saw Jin nod with a sigh.
“Okay,” Hoseok took a breath, smiled at his Hyung and took his hands off him. “Go.”
Jin stood rooted to the ground for a few seconds, took a deep breath as if to calm himself down. He closed his eyes, taking deep breaths as if to find the scent of something.
Then, he took off to wherever his feet took him. Hoseok followed him from close behind, trying to catch a smell of what his brother had smelled. He didn’t want to get in Jin’s way of finding whatever he was searching for. Jin took deep breaths, letting go of his heightened senses. His ears trying to pick up anything, nose trying to pick up any scent that catches his wolf’s attention.
“Try harder. We must find it. You will regret going empty handed. Can’t lose this. Very important. Look harder. It’s right here. Find something that leads you there.” Jin, his wolf growled.
Hoseok noticed how Jin was barely in control anymore. His wolf was showing itself more so than normal. Jin was rambling when it hit him; a completely out of place refreshing calm scent. In a long time since he set out on this mission, Jin felt his wolf settle and stutter his words.
“Found. Track the scent.” He and his wolf purred at your scent. “Hurt. Blood. Monsters. Hurt. Die. Hurt.” The wolf growled loudly, lost in emotions and continued, “Please track the scent. Please. Quick. Might lose it. Please.” His wolf was stuttering out sentences, lost in the excitement and worry at finally having found whatever he was looking for.
He ran to the source, taking in the trail of scent in the air as he raced down the stairs that looked untread.
Hasn’t anyone come here? Were there more of them here? Is that why his wolf was restless?
The stairs were made of wood with some steps missing, an odd addition to the concrete building, like it was as an afterthought than an initial plan. When he reached the floor again, he noticed he was in the basement, two stories below the ground because he was in the other basement before this and that looked like a different place.
He looked around, only to find metal barred rooms that looked like prisons. Were they holding hostages here? He wondered, eyeing the place around in mild distaste.
The stench was mixed with your soothing scent and he couldn’t help but sniff around moving deeper into the room, trying to find you, the source of the mouth-watering scent.
Then when he reached the last room, your scent hit him again, much stronger than before. He was almost knocked off his feet as his eyes set themselves on you.
Even amidst the stench, filth and disturbing vibe of the place, you looked so beautiful to him, so soft, so sweet and so perfect that Jin for minute felt his world come to a halt, his wolf purring loudly in his mind and his heart clenching painfully in a pleasuring way.
As his flickering golden eyes focused on you, Jin felt something strong in his chest again as the pain faded as his heart burst with pleasure, warmth and affection, his wolf howling happily and running around in his head.
There was a rush of adrenaline and the euphoria in him caused his senses to be so overwhelmed that he fell on his knees, sweat dripping and his pheromone filled scent rolling off him in waves. He kept his hooded eyes on you, drinking in the euphoric rush when it registered him.
Suddenly, he was taken from in front of a warm fire and dropped into a frozen lake, the ice cracking and cold water suffocating him like the view in front of him.
You were on the ground, hands and legs bound by metal shackles behind a metal cage, like some sort of captive animal. Blood was flowing out of your wounds; bite marks on your neck, shoulders, wrists and arms.
You were bleeding, you were hurt. His wolf growled at the thought of you being hurt. He pushed himself off his knees and stumbled to you, lifting you into his arms.
“Hey-Hey,” He called out to you and wiped the blood off your face, waiting for you to show him some sign of life and strength. Tears were filling his eyes, blurring his vision. “Love, are-are you okay? Can-can you hear me? Can-can you hear me?” He asked, softly patting your swollen cheeks, desperately hoping to hear something back or some kind of response from you.
Your body was cold, pale and looked severely malnourished. His heart pounded painfully inside him as his wolf whimpered and growled at your limp body. You were bruised from the shackles and there was an injury to your temple, that was bleeding.
Your wrists, arms and neck had bite marks, red and bleeding fresh ones that made him wonder if he should’ve found you earlier. Then would you have been in a better state?
Wild thoughts ran through his head in a split second as he put his head closer to your chest, trying to find a beating heart. Your heart was beating thankfully but it was obvious that it wouldn’t last long, you wouldn’t last long.
The rhythm was too slow for a living being and you looked less than alive.
“Hyung- what?” Hoseok asked, looking at their oldest, who was cradling you to his chest, a girl who from the looks of it is dead.
Your scent was weird.
Now that he was so close, your scent was mixed with the filth you were lying in, vampire venom and vampire blood. He wrinkled his nose.
What exactly are you?
Hoseok could hear Jin’s heart stuttering away in his ribcage as his breaths came in heavy panting, shaking like he was having trouble controlling his body.
He was scrambling away as he held you closer, looking close to losing his mind. He was whimpering, growling and crying as his body shook violently. It was as if he was trying to get out from inside him.
Were his suspicions right?
Hoseok thought to himself as he watched Jin pull off his shirt and wrap it around you to give you warmth. He pulled you to his naked chest, rubbing his warm hands over your arms to warm you up.
“She’s-” Jin looked up at his brother, eyes flashing gold, filled with tears, he whispered again, and a sob escaped his lips.
“She’s my mate.”
