Gear Talk #2: Boots
Boots are very important when playing extreme sports like paintball and airsoft. You can skimp on the clothes but DO NOT compromise when buying footwear. The reason for this is you walk 90% of the time in games. You run on rough terrain, Rocks, tree stumps, roots, vines all waiting for a chance to twist your ankle or trip you up if you aren’t careful.
Hiking shoes that provide ankle protection such as Merrells and the on and off releases from Nike and Adidas are good, but for today, I bring you the SAR OTB Boot. It is a 6-inch boot that (according to New Balance, the parent company) was developed for the US Navy Seals.
OTB is a military term that stands for Over The Beach. This in turn translates to a nation’s standing military strength that can be sent Over The Beach of an enemy nation. AKA How many guys can you send to invade someone’s place.
The boot itself is an excellent jungle boot. It has very good drainage, this means that if you step into a puddle and you get that squishy feeling inside your shoe, have no fear, this boot will drain the water out. This is very good for the health of your foot preventing it from rotting. It also has a decent non-slip sole, I’ve run with it across a wet basketball court and I didn’t slip.
Inside, it’s very comfortable and feels like a running shoe, my only complaint was that when I was new, the top part of the boot cut into my shins. Wear the proper socks when you wear this.
Lastly, the laces of the boot are offset on the inside of the foot. this presumably is so the laces won’t accumulate so much mud when you’re crawling around on your belly.
Overall I think it’s a very good boot and I’ll wear it for the foreseeable future.
Cannot stress just how important a good boot is, it can make the difference between a broken ankle and a sprained one.

Respawning in airsoft is a interesting thing. Some places do it, some do not. It has its advantages and disadvantages so, should your team allow it?
Respawning, for those of you who just don’t know, is rejoining a existing airsoft game after one gets HIT. Much like in Airsoft’s video game...
I don't tend to milsim so I usually play with respawns, it really helps the longevity of a game and makes it a lot more fun as well, I remember at my first ever skirmish at an official site, me and my mate got hit within literally 20 seconds of starting as we didn't realise the range of professional standard airsoft guns. If there where no respawns that probably would have put me off airsoft a fair bit.
I have played a few games with no respawns but that was because it was only a short day and wanted to get in as many games as possible, and that, for me, is the main reason to play without respawns, to play as many different games as possible. I know that there is also the added realism for milsim players, but as I already stated, I don't tend to milsim.
I have also played a few different games where one team had different respawns rules from the other. One of these was a small, elite team, including me, with no respawns defending a large building from a bigger team in which each player had one respawn. This worked very well as everyone knew the rules before the game started and stuck to them, it made sneaking around and picking people off with my VSR that bit more challenging, difficult and fun as I had to displace after every single shot instead of just misses, as they player who I hit may still have a respawn and come back knowing the general area from which I fired. It also effectively doubled the number of OpFor without overcrowding the building. So in this scenario those rules worked very well. Incidentaly our team won, with me surviving until the very end and racking up the most kills in our team :) Another similar rule system i've played was again two teams, this team matched in numbers and player ability (roughly). One team defending a small killhouse whilst the other team assaulted it. The respawn rules for the defending team was that each player had 3 respawns (the respawn point was in the very centre of the killhouse) and after that, if they were hit, they went and sat in the dead-zone. The assaulting team had unlimited respawns. Obviously this is infinitely one-sided, but as the defending team it had an interesting effect, there was a very determined atmosphere to hold out as long as possible. This was obviously the intention as the marshals time how long each team defends for. Yes the same effect could be acheived if the defending team had no respawns but then the problem of losing the fun factor if you're hit early arises again. There was a marshal by the spawn point to make sure the rules were stuck to but he wasn't necessary as it was a very honourable group of people. I've played this scenario as both attack and defend and it does work very well, it makes for an intense game as the assaulters are very aggressive due to unlimited respawn (getting hit just means you have to talk a walk to regen and back) and the defenders were very determined to hold their ground and didn't give an inch they didn't have to. So slightly different rules but again it worked.
The vast majority of games I play are where both teams have unlimited respawns, they just have to walk to the regen point and they're back in the action. Personally, I would rather if both teams had a set amount of repawns per player, 5 maybe. This would still add length to the game, would still keep it fast and aggressive as there are some respawns, but wouldn't go on as long. The unlimited does work in objective based games such as capture the flag, search and destroy, collect the package and so on, and there is a set time on each game to ensure they don't go on forever and it works. It does work quite well but it isn't exactly my preffered rules. But it all depends on the scenario, the rules need to be adapted for each game type and as long as they are clearly explained to each team before the game, there is no reason they shouldn't work.
But that's just one mans opinion, are there any other respawn rules that people have used?

airsoftninja replied to your post: The Ol’ Captain just got back from his first Airsoft op of the year.
What make is your SCAR? I’m gonna guess ARES.
Nope, its a Dboys model. Yeah, I know…is a cheaper gun, but I really like the SCAR design and I’ve been wanting this gun for a...
A brief, but comprehensive review of a DBOYS SCAR by Cappy. I'm glad he posted this to be honest, i've been debating with myself whether to get a HK 417, Sig 550, Sig 551 or a CQC SCAR. After reading this i'm more informed which is always a good thing, it's just the SCAR price tag that puts me off buying one. But the DBOYS seems excellent, and is reasonably cheaper than the ARES. Thanks Captain.

Range: FPS Vs Hop-up
Range, just as important in airsoft as it is in the real world. You have an obvious advantage if you can hit your target at 80m and his BBs are dropping at 60m. The airsoft equivalent of holding a midget at arms length whilst kicking him repeatedly in the jewels. And how do you go about acheiving this (the range thing, not assaulting a midget)? Well there are two ways. The most obvious one is more power. Surely higher fps means that the projectile will be projected further. This may hold true with real-steel, but not so in airsoft and this is due to the second way of increasing your range; the hop-up unit.
First, a quick education in the hop-up system just in case you don't know. It was invented by Tokyo Marui and is a genius way of increasing the range on practically any airsoft gun. What it basically is; is a little plastic or rubber nub that protrudes very slightly down inside the barrel of your gun (the extent of this protrusion is usually adjustable) and this little nub clips the BB as it flies past, applying backspin to it. The more the nub sticks out into the barrel, the larger the backspin. This backspin has the effect of causing the BB to curve upwards in its flight, the point in flight it does this and to what extent depends on how strong or weak the hop-up is set (I've put the hop-up max in a few guns and had the BB go pure vertical after 20m which is bloody funny and, if you hold your gun sideways, useful for firing around corners). Ideally the BB should pull up just after it starts to dip, giving an extra 10-30m of flight depending on the hop-up and fps. This has a pretty obvious benefit.
But back to range. Most people think that to make the BB go further they just need more power, but due to the hop-up this is not actually true. The hop-up introduces a lot of other variables into the range equation and a high fps can have some strange effects on the flight of the BB. One example is of a Tanaka M700 that was using Green Gas on a very warm day. Due to the coonditions the gun was firing at 660 fps, when fired the BB would leave the barrel like a bullet that was late for its own wedding, but after 30m the BB would go left. And I don't mean curve left, I mean it would nearly do a 90 degree turn midflight. The velocity of the BB cancelled out all the internals designed to make for accurate shooting. And of course higher fps can cause damage to the hop-up meaning that you may have to dig into your wallet for replacements and/or upgrades.
The obvious solution here may seem to be to simply remove the hop-up and juice up the fps but this is not a solution. The hop-up is so good at increasing the range that a non-hopped barrel would need to be running at around 800 fps to fire 60m, that's more powerful than some real-steel guns. The best way is to upgrade the hop-up, it has a far more drastic effect upon the range than increasing the fps from 320 to 350. So if you want to be hitting your targets from further away, the answer isn't more power but better hop-up.
Hope this article was useful, now go outside and get 'softing!

Reblog and see if you can name all the guns by their silhouttes.
The Ol’ Captain can get a few. Let’s see:
AK; G36 with its stock folded; this looks like a p90 mod; m16; AUG; MP5; FAMAS; XM8; no clue here; SCAR with a reddot?; Psg1; M82 barret; Mossberg?; not sure; m14?; flintlock?; p90; Uzi; mk36?; hand grenade. Pistols aren’t my strong point.
Good attempt, AK47 to be precise, what you said looked like a P90 mod is actually a F2000. MP5 SD to be more precise, SD5 I believe. After the XM8 is the SA80 L85A1, the british standard issue. Rest are good but it’s a G36K, not MK36. And i’m the same for pistols bar the last one which is a glock 17
First row: AK47, G36, OICW?, M16, Steyr AUG
Second row: MP5SD, FAMAS, XM8, SA80, SCAR
Third row: Dragunov, Barret, M500, MG34, Lee-Enfield
Fourth row: thar be jack sparrow’s boomstick!, P90, Uzi, no idea, Mk2 Fragmentation grenade.
Fifth Row: (wild shot in the dark time!) M1911, Mk23?, (no idea), (no idea), some glock.
Very good, The middle gun on the first row is the FN2000, second from the end in the 4th row is a G36, the E variant I believe. Good job on the pistols, they're difficult (apart from the Glock due to its distinctive internal hammer)

Madbull Surefire LLC Mini 5"
As the name suggests, this is quite a small suppressor which measure 5" long, and only adds 2.75" to the length of your gun, Again this comes with a steel flash hider to attach the suppressor to. The QD on this suppressor is excellent, simply slipping the suppressor over the flash hider, twist and you'll hear a nice loud clunk and she's solid.
It is also suprisingly heavy for its diminuitive size, packed with a high density, felt type wadding that does work quite well. The trademarks are, although not perfect, pretty damn close and are yet again, white laser etched on.

Gear
Now i'm all too aware that getting 1st and 2nd line gear can be quite expensive and time consuming, trying to find a camouflage pattern that you like the look of, getting shirt and trousers in that pattern, and then getting a holster/belt rig/Tac vest/MOLLE vest that looks good with your chosen camo and is also functional, comfortable and suits your style of play. It can take a considerable amount of effort (especially if you're trying to get Polish Metro Camo, damn near impossible).
A popular and easy way to get around this is to go for a PMC or Spec Ops loadout. The good thing about these loadouts is that you can mix and match different weapons and camo patterns and gear. I have a Spec Ops loadout for when i'm using my L96 and my camo is all flecktarn. In case you don't know much about nations gear, the L96 is the british sniper rifle and flecktarn is german camouflage. It is also good for people who are just getting into airsoft and don't want to be spending big bucks yet.
A good, cheap way to do one of these loadouts would be, for example, tan or OD colour combat trousers. You know those style of trousers with loads of pockets, one of them in brown or dark green. You probably already have a pair, and if not you can get a pair quite cheap and they look good as well as being functional due to the myriad of pockets. For upper layer, a simple t-shirt or polo shirt makes an effective base layer, and the polo shirt even provides protection from slings or rigs rubbing on your neck which is a pretty good bonus. On top of this you can wear a simple black hoody. Just make sure it's one that has to be pulled on over your head as buttons and zippers can tend to get uncomfortable under a rig, especially when running around, sliding into cover and firing prone. Footwear is pretty simple. Boots. A pair of good boots with strong ankle support can make the difference between a sprained and broken ankle. Now rigs is a little bit more difficult as this will depend on your personal playing style, weapon and what you think looks cool. So you're going to have to do some research yourself into what you would like best, be it a belt-rig, MOLLE vest or a tac-vest. But one of the joys of this style is that you can get whatever you think looks coolest without worrying about whether it matches the real-world counterparts. And the same goes for weaponry, you can buy whatever weapon you want as you aren't bound by accuracy.
Hope this was helpful if you're thinking about starting to airsoft, or have recently started. Now get out and play!
