I am always so surprised whenever I remember that people actually follow my cooking blog... girl. It's entirely me raging about 'cooking for revenge', self-esteem and the smokes and mirrors of self-sufficiency, maturity and the ability to cook ambitiously, juxtaposed with the worst, least appetising pictures of food known to this website. You will not find worse pictures. Taken over a stove. Over a sink. With onion peels visible in the background. With my fucking hand visible holding the plate. In the worst yellow light. Completely not touched up.
What are people getting out of following that blog lol

friendly reminder that findtags is the best way to search tumblr’s absolutely destroyed tag system. it actually accurately looks through the tags without omitting results. it’s the only thing i use at this point because it’s the only thing that works

Writing is so awesome. I had things on my mind. I sat with them and an open document for an hour. Feel like I've puked it all out. Now I can go pack and eat dinner. Free therapy

the Columbia University arrests are worse than they seem. They're arresting protesting students for trespassing. It goes without saying students cannot meaningfully "trespass" in the common areas of a university they attend. So Columbia University has suspended all student protestors from their institution, in the process revoking their access to housing, their belonging, and most crucially damaging their academic futures. We are witnessing full scale silencing and removal of anyone of conscience from the next generation of academia.

While this particular experience isn't directly from fanfic writers, I know and have had the joy of speaking to lyricists for whom English is a second language, and on top of that their first is a marginalised, borderline endangered language. They know that making art in English has its own political connotations, but also know that realistically it isn't something they can avoid, and in the face of that, they've found their own delights within English, and in making the language their own. We've chatted about writing in English, and the absolute joy these guys derive in the language: the wordplay, bilingual puns, even the sounds of words. They're just having such fun using language!
I've written little bits in non-English languages, and it's so much fun! You learn a word, a phrase, a particular turn of phrase that you've never heard before, and a thousand years of modern human experience distilled through phrases that once meant something literal that doesn't exist anymore, suddenly make themselves apparent to you. Of course you'll want to use it! Pepper your writing with it, get as fun and freaky and familiar with it as you can.
That does mean the metaphors will sometimes come out ham-fisted. But so what! The thing with language is that it is so closely tied to collective human experiences and culture, imagine unlocking that for the first time. Just the sheer volume of it definitely means that at some point we need to normalise what we already know in our lives, but try to think of encountering it for the first time!
It just excites me. The outcome doesn't even have to be for me, but thinking of other people falling in love with writing and language in their own time is something so endearing to me. I love anyone who's new to something, there's a lot to be reminded of from them.
I think it's mean how some people talk about fics on AO3.
'Oh you gotta wade through literal trash to find the good stuff'.
Were you not a beginner once? Did you not write crack fic or self indulgent things for your own entertainment?
Maybe don't speak that way about your fellow fic writers? Just because some fics aren't as polished as others, or involve fetishes and tropes you don't enjoy, or are not the style you want your fics to be doesn't mean they're trash.
It's a horrible thing to say and beginners are going to be discouraged from writing knowing that their fics might be considered trash because they're just starting out.

Story time: I’m a trans guy. I have an identical twin. We’re both tall, androgynous, and have naturally deep voices
In high school a rumor was spread that one of us was trans. For years, everyone in school had convinced themselves that my twin was “the trans one”. She rolled with it to keep me safe, and said it felt like a compliment to be mistaken for a trans woman since she looked up to a lot of trans women. That didn’t stop the bullying, but it’s easier to deal with when it’s directed at the wrong person. I’m engaged to a feminine cis guy who is several inches shorter than me. I have 20-30lbs on him and I can dead lift him. He’s more delicate and soft both physically and socially. He cries during sad movies, owns half a million stuffed animals, and clings to my arm when he’s nervous or it’s cold out (oh yeah, also he’s adorable) Whenever the topic of being trans comes up, cis people tend to think he’s the one who is trans. Direct all “what do your parents think?” comments onto him. Completely ignore me. Ask him invasive/transphobic questions about his body. Tell him “you pass so well!” through grit teeth. Like with my sister, I get pretty pissed about this, but there’s not much I can do about it. I have had to argue with cis people to establish the fact I’m trans because they don’t believe me & think I’m joking. they’re like “but he’s - no, she’s trans!” and frantically point fingers at my fiance and sister. Because there’s no way an adult cis woman could be taller than 5′9 and choose to be bare-faced, and an adult cis man could love How To Train Your Dragon 2 with a fiery passion, enough to watch it 3 times in the theatre.  Terfs take one look at us and try to convince my sister she’ll never have a uterus or that she’s “appropriating women’s spaces”. Transphobes say my boyfriend will “always be a girl” and call him gendered slurs. They talk over them, block them, and grill them about what genitalia they have online. Completely unknowing that they’re talking to two cisgender people who are gay and gnc. @ young, closeted, scared trans people: any cis person who insists they can somehow “know” your “birth sex” by looking at you because “it’s so obvious!” is full of shit. people come in all shapes and sizes regardless of gender. Not only are they being transphobic, but they’re being homophobic too.
