I first read this novel since I was 15, living in Houston at the time. It made cry the first time because of how much I felt bad to our character Connor O'Malley. Little did I knew then, I would end up in a similar position like Connor. I re-read this when I went to the library, and the nostalgia really hit me. The story about a boy who struggles with the thought of losing his mother due to a severe illness, makes our character interact with a monster in a form of a giant, Tree-like being who comes to him to tell stories to teach him how grey and complicated the world and humanity is. A way to help Conner finally tell his story (the truth) in order to try moving forward in life.
It is a very gutretching, emotional journey when you finished, you end up crying for hours (like me) but you'll also feel it is not just a story, but something we all can relate to. The fear of losing someone or anyone we hold dear is a real tragedy that we all have to find a way to cope. This is why this story is so beautifully written that it feels REAL. Author Patrick Ness, who I loved his work on the chaos walking trilogy, is an amazing writer for how to make a story that, after reading, it will continue staying with you. Where it feels like you have gone into a journey that feels fulfilling.
The only con I have, part of me, wished there was more to Connor's story than I wanted to know. I want to know how he lives life when he grows into adulthood and how he lives with the teachings of his mother and the monster's stories. But the other part of me feels that despite the story being short, every novella is a lot more impactful where you wish for more but at the end of the day, you feel happy reading the story and still remembering it. It is why stories like Coraline, issues of the sandman, and the Harry Potter still resonate with me to this day because of how meaningful they are.
I give A Monster Calls a perfect 5/5 stars and highly recommend it to everyone, especially during this time of December. And please do check out more from author Patrick Ness. He is an incredible writer 👏
Thank you, and Bless be with you all
