Fic Recommendations (destiel oriented)
these are just random ones I feel comfortable sharing, often shorter and more focused on Castiel or angst, and then also some writers. It’s in no way comprehensive nor a reflection of the breadth of fanfic I enjoy! feel free to search more through the authors if you enjoy them since I am by no means saying these are the best!
I tried to keep ratings lower and less dark for this one, but if you do enjoy darker fics and/or are 18+ I’d love to talk about other fics with you! Some of these are rated M/E though and some have triggering content so please check before reading to make sure you’re comfortable!
One author I really love is NorthernSparrow. I got really into their fics in 2014 because they write human Cas so well. I would rec Forgotten (G) to just about anyone, which is a case fic where Sam and Dean do not remember Cas. It then goes into a sequel (which has destiel or no destiel options). I would recommend anything by them though, depending on age/taste.
NorthernSparrow also wrote A Winter’s Tale (T) which is a completely heartbreaking and beautiful exploration of Cas’s storyline as a human and almost feels like a must read to that arc. They have more too if you like those fics! They are also good at very plotty epic types of fics.
Another of my favourite authors is @fromcenotaphy or cenotaphy, to no one’s surprise if you’ve been following me for a while. I’ve recced them here.
I also really have liked some of bookkbaby’s work, such as this fic (T) where Cas tries to step forward when Sam and Dean entrap him in holy fire in season 8.
Domesticadventures is an amazing writer too! They have at least one that has gotten popular (E) (as it should), but nearly everything they write is amazing. For any in particular I’d recommend Borderlines (G) or White Noise (G) which are good short fics for Castiel angst.
I also think Aini_NuFire (not destiel, but often very Cas focused) is amazing, including their holy terror coda or this (T) I’m no angel coda. I have read quite a few other of their longer works too, totally recommend!
I also may as well rec sp8ce with a post confession multi chapter Dean POV Unsound Inverses (E) and a 5x03 Cas POV nsfw fic (E) as well as other lower rated oneshots and also a dark fic here if you are certain enough on tags.
Cuckoo and Nest (E) is one of my favourite fics where Castiel is living in the bunker in a relationship with Dean as a human and struggles to figure out if he’s wanted while struggling with feelings of insecurity and fear and their impact.
A Love Of All Things That Grow (G) is a fic where Cas grows a garden at the bunker as a human. I adore it.
Islands (M) is a fic post sacrifice with Castiel living at the bunker and follows miscommunication and a toxic dynamic down, and I really enjoyed it.
Things that Leave Marks (M) is a really interesting fic to me because it has Cas established with a life outside of Dean post I’m No Angel and Dean meeting up with him again, more than three years later. I really love it.
Driving Instructions: Timestamp for “Traverse” (T) is a fic from Nora’s perspective around Heaven Can’t Wait.
Missing Home (G) is another Heaven Can’t Wait coda <3
and don’t ask me where i’ve been (T) is as well, and it’s one of my favourite in the way it captures Cas’s state as well as uses metaphors I enjoy.
Enochian Things (Salr323) is the writer of the famed Cas-gets-an-Italian-boyfriend fic, but I also recommend their coda Don’t worry (about a thing) (T) too, and I would recommend a lot of the things they’ve written!
The poetry of fish (G) is an amazing focusing on Cas’s experience watching Earth’s history, and the writer is very educated and smart, so it allows another lens into Cas’s perspective.
also peterspajamas @ghostmary is an amazing writer, of performative homophobia and What Throbs In Your Chest beauty, and they also have a lot of variety and are just very talented!
Also obligatory Map of the World (M) rec, which is the first book of Down to Agincourt. It’s one of my favourite written fics ever, and I love the complex ways the plot and world and writing wrap together alongside the character’s emotions and development!

list of collective scenes inside dean’s mind / different versions of dean / unfiltered versions of dean:
- 1.06 “skin” – a shapeshifter turns into dean and as a result knows everything about his inner psyche. he tells sam that dean is jealous that sam has a life, and he says that dean thinks of himself as a freak and that he believes everyone is going to leave him one day
- 2.20 “what is and what never should be” – dean dreams about a domestic life with a committed partner, wants desperately to learn how to mow a lawn, wants to fix things with his family so they can all be happy together, john is dead, dean is not a hunter
- 3.10 “dream a little dream of me” – dean dreams about a domestic life with a committed partner and a child, also admits to himself that he is his own worst nightmare and that he’s terrified that the only thing he is good for is death + destruction, hates how john molded him this way
- 3.13 “ghostfacers!” – dean curses like a sailor (unfiltered ghostfacers effect)
- 4.06 “yellow fever” – dean gets infected with ghost sickness and he hallucinates lilith, who tells him that he’s going to die and go to hell again. he asks her why he got infected, and she replies, “you know why, dean. listen to your heart”
- 4.17 “it’s a terrible life” – dean was never raised by john and so he never grew up hunting, is very comfortable in his masculinity and femininity, a little bored with his steady job but overall very content with his life, can’t even tell that anything is wrong even when sam realizes something is off (even though dean has a COMPLETE personality change while sam has the exact same personality)
- 5.04 “the end” – alternate timeline. dean is expected by others to be a fierce leader for a hunter outpost during the apocalypse, has no hope for the future, the most violent and masculine we ever see him (besides mark of cain dean)
- 5.14 “my bloody valentine” – dean isn’t affected by famine because he’s too empty inside
- 5.16 “dark side of the moon” – we see dean’s personal heaven of his happiest memories, which include shooting off fireworks with sam when they were kids, and then mary making him lunch and him comforting her because she and john were fighting
- 6.15 “the french mistake” – sam and dean are sent into an alternate universe where supernatural is a TV show and dean is played by actor jensen ackles. when dean has to act as himself, he intentionally makes his voice MUCH deeper, and when sam questions it, dean explains, “that’s how he does it” – acknowledging the fact that dean does lower his own voice purposefully in his own life as well
- 7.09 “how to win friends and influence monsters” – dean gets high from the biggerson’s leviathan goo sandwich, and he doesn’t care about any of the things he’s usually angsting about, specifically citing cas’ death and the leviathan problem, notably putting cas before the leviathans even though the leviathans are objectively a bigger deal
- 8.07 “a little slice of kevin” – dean hallucinates that cas has returned from purgatory after blaming himself for cas’ death (it actually was cas trying to communicate with dean, but regardless, dean still believed that they were hallucinations at the time). it is also revealed that when cas didn’t go through the portal in purgatory, it was so traumatizing for dean that his brain rewrote his memory of the event to make it a personal failure on his own part instead of what actually happened, which was cas intentionally letting go of dean’s hand

this year is very special for both Dean and me, so I couldn’t resist writing this little something
happy pride 🏳️🌈 closeted or not, be proud!
They say it in a low voice, almost whispering. Coming out, sharing those words with him. Dean can't decide if they are quiet because the truth is too big for the world to overhear, or too little to disturb its course. They even cover their mouth with a trembling hand, as if more words are about to spill out, and freeze, waiting for his reaction. His approval.
Something inside Dean’s mind screams for him to get up and run, as quick as he can, as far he can get, but he shoves it down and takes their fragile hands, hiding them under his wide palm, and whispers softly:
"I am proud of you. Thanks for trusting me with it."
There are tears, big and bitter - a heart getting rid of the pain. Shedding. Purifying. But there’s a smile shining through, too. They hug it out; the moment shy and skittish, and they don’t move for a while, unwilling to scare it away.
He doesn't remember their name, their face, or what directions they went afterwards, bidding their farewells, but he clearly remembers how he felt, exposed to this kind of human vulnerability.
He’s been used to open wounds and closed caskets since he was a kid; never had he ever had to deal with a bare heart before.
Years later, soldiering up in front of the mirror, he summons the feeling back. He looks at his reflection. Fiddles with a small pin in the shape of the flag on the lapel of his jacket.
The door behind his back creaks open, Sam’s ridiculously giant head peeking in. The wide toothy grin on his face falters, transforming into something soft and careful.
“So, you decided to go with Claire and Cas after all, huh?” Sam asks, stepping closer, as casual as he can master despite the excitement shining brightly in his puppy eyes.
Dean’s glance jumps between the tricolor pin and Sam’s face in the mirror, and he forces his hands to stay along his thighs and not rip off the small symbol off his chest.
“Yeah, wouldn’t let me die in peace, if I didn’t,” Dean grumps, nervously shifting from one foot to the other. He feels exposed, bare, and he shields with a muffed, “Quality family time, my ass.”
Sam laughs, loud and ringing. He comes closer, both of them now appearing in the mirror together, side by side. Dean looks down, catching the shine in Sam’s eyes.
“It’s not a big deal, Sammy,” he rasps, shrugging it off.
Sam shakes his head with loving exasperation, bumping him with his shoulder.
“It is,” he says. “And it should be, Dean. Own it.”
Dean takes a deep, trembling breath and tilts his head back, like it can prevent the tears pooling up in his eyes. He shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans, huffing a laugh, suddenly an excited nine year old all over again, swaying heels to toes. Regards both their reflections, thinking of the long way they both have come.
Just words, Dean has been telling himself time and time again, but hearing them turns out to be so surprisingly freeing. And most importantly, they are enough to dissolve the metal ring that’s been around his heart for long, suffocating forty two years.
Sam claps Dean on the back and leaves the room with a cheerful, “Have fun. And tell the kids we said hi.”
Before Sam disappears into the dim corridor, Dean notices Eileen standing outside the door with a gym bag by her feet. He nods in greeting, and she shoots him a thumbs up, accompanied with a warm smile.
He gets his own bag, once again looks in the mirror to fix the pin on his jacket, and leaves the room, too.
Still Dean Winchester. But at the same time a different man.

Fic recs! Fic recs! Get your Destiel fic recs!
It's time for a new installment of River reads too much and makes it everyone's problem.
"Psalm 40:2" by unicornpoe @danger-and-diatribes (Explicit, 44k words)
Look, this fic made me cry real, actual tears, which is not something I do, so you know it's good. I'm a sucker for a time travel fic, but even so this one is God tier. It pairs post 15x18 Cas at his most loving, most unapologetically affectionate with Stanford Era Dean at his most vulnerable. It's healing and satisfying to see Dean at that point in his life be told he is loved and that he matters. The author is also extremely John critical which makes it doubly so.
The prose is amazing and I was quoting and screaming about it to people as I read it. There are so many lines that will haunt you. I can't more highly recommend it.
"The Full Experience" by nickelmd (Mature, 29k)
I won't apologize for loving a good fake relationship, only one bed resort fic and this one is excellent. Sam sets up a semi-vacation by taking a case at a Jamaican couples resort. Dean is a bi disaster. Cas makes a ton of wrong assumptions about Dean’s ability to pretend to be in love with him. They are idiots in the best way and you will want to shake them and hug them. Plus they get toes in the sand which I think we all need these days.
It's cute and sweet and very romantic once they get out of their own way.
A Light for My Path by domesticadventures (Mature, 25k words) @domesticadventures
It's a simple concept. A story told from the perspective of the Continental. Sorta like "Baby." But buckle up because you will find yourself absolutely in love with "Connie." Her sweet affection for the boys makes this fic amazing. She takes care of them and they take care of her and I am surprisingly emotional about it all.

Fracture Mechanics by Rend_Herring (Explicit, 43k) @rendherring
A fix-it fic that will hurt you and then put you back together (as it should be). The thing about this fic is that it so beautifully and realistically depicts grief and it will tear you apart. It also has a deeply repressed Dean working on his issues and that ends up being super satisfying.
Laced throughout the story are some pretty hilarious lines and a prose style that will make you stop and go scream at people. Truly, this one is a standout and I'm sad the author doesn't have more SPN works to devour. It was that good.
The line that will stick with me is this one by Jody to Dean on the subject of grief. (Spoiler obviously, so beautifully put)
no, because what you’re feeling right now isn’t just despair, it’s the gratefulness underneath. It’s the love that we still hold for the people we lose, it’s the beauty that they were ever able to exist at all."
"Along My Restless Palms" by sass_master (Explicit, 27k) @sass-master-stina art by @winchester-reload
When Cas moves into the bunker, Dean's unconscious kicks into overdrive. Specifically, he finds himself having some interesting dreams about Cas.
Ok, look, dressing Cas in little outfits is always gonna get the thumbs up from me, so the dream sequences in this fic are amazing. However, it's more than that. There's something fun about watching Dean Repression Winchester confronted with what he truly wants. He is a total disaster in the fic in the best way.
There's also a softness and a sweetness to this fic that may not be evident from the premise. It's Dean learning to let himself go after what he wants, which is something I can’t get enough of.
"heaven is a place (a place where nothing ever happens)" by smalltowncas (underthelinden) (Teen, 8.9k) @gracekisses
A soft little Heaven fix-it with Dean hotel pool truthing, some light fuck J*hn Winchester vibes and a lot of satisfying long overdue word-using. If you need something soft to cure what ails you, this is your fic.
The Bird Professor by CadenceImperfect, kateaintbeehaven and tale_to_tell (Mature, 5k)
Based on a tweet by thee NorthernSparrow, I did not stop smiling the entire time I read this one. An AU where Dean and Cas are professors with mutual crushes. Dean gets drunk and calls Cas to settle a bar debate. It's hilarious and adorable and they are both disasters with no chill in the cutest way.
"if wishes were horses" by teen_dean
There are so many good fix-it fics out there. I find it incredible that this fandom saw that miserable ending and thought: I will fix this.
This one sticks out for me because it checks a lot of boxes. Dean is in heaven, but it feels like something is wrong. This doesn’t feel very heavenly. And where are Jack and Cas? He becomes increasingly convinced that this isn’t what's advertised.
Also, he's a cowboy, and that's the thing I'm sensitive about.

OK BESTIE I got you. my favorite 100k and over fics:
*All Things Shining, 141k, my favorite fic of all time. it gives us team free will road trip vibes, it gives us mythology, it gives us writing that feels like the push and pull of the missisippi river, it gives us amazing deancas this fic was written in 2013 and holds up/is better in 2021.
Forgotten/Flight, which are 161k and 319k respectively, have great plots, angel mythology, and amazing worldbuilding! also great original ideas and characters! sarah flight/forgotten my beloved. a self-described "glacially slow romance"
Four Letter Word, 194k, which is my favorite AU of all time
Cinderwings, 181k, another masterpiece by bendingsignpost. Cinderella/royalty AU that I could barely put down. I loved this fic so much. Great slowburn, worldbuilding is amazing I love the system of magic in it 11/10 might reread it right now
Plot Holes, 160k, written by saltyfeathers my beloved! such an amazing season 9 AU. slowburn, found family vibes with kevin and charlie. cas and kevin are pals :) good sam content too
dumbassery, denial, doing (the three d's to the destination), 108k by sobsicles my beloved. incredible fic of dean being in denial and just being stupidly in love with cas. very wholesome. slow burn
of course I have to mention down to agincourt, a massive end!verse series that is currently at 1,121,311. I have not personally read it yet, but many trusted friends and mutuals have and loved it!
