Featuring frenetic cities where surprises lurk around every corner, tropical islands with white sands and a mind-blowing food scene to tantalise your tastebuds, Asia is the pinnacle of surprising travel. Visitors can take a break from the stresses of the 9-5 by relaxing in a hammock on an island, or else get their pulses racing on an adventurous river activity or hair-raising tuk tuk ride through the backstreets of a manic new town. The key to visiting Asia is to both approach it with an open mind, yet also to make sure you’re ready for what waits in store. Doing some research is a great first step, allowing you to prepare both logistically and mentally for the holiday of a lifetime! To help, we’ve listed five of our favourite spots on the continent for a break.
1. Singapore
If a travel expert were asked to define a melting pot of culture, they may well say a single world: ‘Singapore’. It’s possible to get around the tiny city-state in no time at all, thanks to it’s super modern and efficient transport system. But take the time to walk around the old Chinatown (and perhaps enjoy the world’s cheapest Michelin starred meal!), before heading to the mind-boggling Gardens by the Bay and enjoying Marina Bay’s first-rate street food markets.

2. Kyoto, Japan
Japan’s capital of culture fuses modern Asia with the ancient, providing breathtaking contrasts. A day spent hopping between golden temples is best broken up by a visit to the revered and spookily spiritual bamboo forest, before heading to the covered markets of downtown. Travellers will revel in the old-world delights of Gion, a district of wooden ryokans, lantern-lit backstreets and tea-rooms that are home to the mysterious Geisha. Kyoto also holds one of the most sensational bucket list hikes going, in the climb through the vermillion gates of Fushimi Inari-Taisha. Add in the Katsu, gyoza and ramen that the area is famous for and this is a city that has it all.

3. Bangkok, Thailand
The archetype of manic, modern Asian cities, Bangkok is a city best summed up by the classic Thai phrase ‘Same same, but different’. Sure – Bangkok has the same world-class food you’ll scene find all over Thailand. Yes, it still has hundreds upon hundreds of breathtaking temples, as you’ll see around much of Asia. But Bangkok is, somehow, different. It has an edge, but also a majesty to it that is unrivalled. This is a city of noise and colour that you will never forget, although it pays to be cautious – according to 1Cover, Thailand has the highest rate of motor accidents in the world. If you’re injured, you’re the one who’ll have to fork out.

4. Hoi An, Vietnam
Atmospheric and quaint, Hoi An is Vietnam’s – and possibly Asia’s – most underrated and delightful town. The entire place being a designated UNESCO World Heritage site gives you a clue, but this charming riverside destination can only be truly understood with a walk down its graceful, traffic-free streets between it’s mishmash of Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese iconography. Or, of course, you can enjoy the nearby delights of some of South-East Asia’s best beaches.

5. Kathmandu, Nepal
Kathmandu can be a bit overwhelming for the first time visitor. The sheer combination of colour, noise and smells is a lot to take in, but a deep breath and a willingness to embrace the Nepalese capital reaps rich rewards. This is a land of of tiny alleyways, artistic heritage and – of course – Buddha. Kathmandu’s old town has enough sights to keep even the most ardent beachbum entertained for a week, though visitors shouldn’t miss out on the luscious countryside surrounding the city!

You may think that a trip aboard means getting the most enormous suitcase you can and filling it to the brim with stuff. However, this is rarely ever the case. In fact, taking too much stuff on your travels can actually cause problems for you. After all, it will be you lugging it around all the time and well as keeping an eye on it. With that in mind, streamlining your packing into a single bag, a process known in the travelling world as 'onebagging' is a much better idea. Happily, you can read all about how to do this in the post below.
youtube
Tech
Tech is probably the most vital aspect of getting one bagging right, apart from choosing the bag itself, something that I will deal with below. In fact, because we live in a world where tech is so advanced, it's possible to get one or two devices max that will fulfil all of the functions you need.   No matter what tech you decide to pack, it is also crucial that when travelling to unfamiliar places to you get the proper coverage in case of loss or theft. Something that will ensure your missing items will be replaced, or the cost covered as soon as possible. After all, without things like this travel insurance by Fast Cover, you could be left in a foreign land without the ability to get in contact with those at home or navigate the next leg of your journey. Something that can if nothing else put a real dampener on your adventures.
Your smartphone may be the only tech you need to pack when travelling [Image Source]
One device that you will definitely need to pack is your smartphone, along with a charger and a power pack in case you run out of battery on the move. In fact, unless you have an apparent reason to take along a tablet, laptop, or advanced camera like a DSLR, your smartphone may suffice for all your needs. After all, with it, you will be able to access maps of your destination, online tour guides, and your music and media. You can also use it for shooting photos and videos, and for accessing social media so you can keep in contact with people at home!
Find the right bag
The first challenge you will face as a onebagger is tracking down the perfect bag for your travels. Happily, the idea of taking only a single carry on bag is not a new one. This means plenty of luggage companies have created bags that will fit in overhead compartments in cabins. Yet still, provide you with a decent amount of room in which to pack up your life.
In fact, one of the most popular bags for such a purpose is the MLC 26L from Patagonia, which has a water bottle and laptop holder. Although there are many others to choose from as well including the Allpa 28 from which is also incredibly popular.
Clothes
Clothes can seem like a bit of a challenge when on bagging. The reason being that they take up the most space, and are essential to get right. After all, you can’t head to a formal party in a swimsuit or vice-versa. Of course, the key to packing clothes is getting the pieces you take down to the bare minimum. That entails being able to grasp the idea of a capsule wardrobe. Something that means instead of packing a whole host of individual outfits you choose just a few pieces that can be worn interchangeably. In fact, for most locations, three bottom pieces like trousers, shorts, or skirts, along with three tops and three over pieces like jackets and cardigans will be enough to last you. Just remember to pack some washing detergent so you can rinse item through if they become dirty. You will, of course, need a few additional items as well such as swimming gear, a waterproof jacket too. Although, do remember that there are often clothing items such as this dress that can be worn in several different ways. Something that will give you a greater variety in your wardrobe but still keeping the space you use to a minimum.
Medicines
youtube
Lastly, even when onebagging, you must make room for any essential medications. Of course, when it comes to medication anything that you have a prescription for comes under this heading. In fact, it can help to have a copy of your prescription with you in case you are queried at customs, or you need to get an emergency refill. Happily, such items often don't take up too much room, and so won't threaten your one bag success.
