Hi I’m View. I make arts, a bit o’ crafts. You’ll see ‘em hereI draw, cross stitch, customize dolls and maybe some other crafty shit| Main blog is @viewfromthevault | 18+ only plz |
Christmas may be over, but as my tree was set up elsewhere instead of my home I had no need to make this year’s recycled xstitch floss ornament until it was time for me to put decorations away.
Hey remember that drawing of Angewomon I did in that drawing prompts book I was attempting to do a page everyday then fell off of almost a year ago? Yeah this is her now. Feel old yet?
Despite spending a lot of time on hand-making Mara’s boots, I have set them aside to be used for something else and am repainting some boots I already have.
I have a pair of dc superhero girls boots that’d work very well for Mara. And the wing motif works well because you know, Mara Peregrine.
NOW FOR PAINTING
Using acrylic gouache, I painted on a few layers of black
Next to come were the steel toes
And some stitching…
…which ended up being covered up as I decided to weather them 0.0
But in the end I think it looks quite good! (Don’t mind the dice tray, I was playing dnd while I did this)
I also took the time to age/dirty up Mara’s pants while I had the paints out. May have gone a bit overboard, but as she’s traveling around Fantasy Earth in the post-apocalypse I’d say her traveling clothes are bound to get messy.
“How many open graves has she fallen into in St. Louise?” -my friends, November 2023
Mara has received her third and final face up and it looks so damn good
So far I am falling back in love with this doll. I’ve yet to see how the hair faired out, you can see I wasn’t able to mask the hairline very well. Even so, this doll looks more like how I envision Mara to look than ever before and that’s quite satisfying.
So I’ve been having to do some reworking w Mara as I have fallen out of love w her progress
While her face up isn’t bad for like my first ever, I know I can do better. Especially now that I have the proper sealant to work with. I tried using liquid matte varnish dabbed on w makeup sponges and it leaves behind a very gritty texture on the vinyl that I never really liked. And because fashion doll brands are cowards and don’t make dolls w big noses I’m going to give Mara her proper nose!
Cleaned her face off for the third time (while I have like 4 other wonder woman dolls I Don’t Want To Waste Them) and used apoxie sculpt to shape her nose.
Next came painting the face as the nose no longer matches the head in colour anymore. This is my first time painting the whole face and while it’s not perfect I think it still gets the job done. Once I get into her face up I believe there can be some colour correction
She lowkey looks like she’s slathered her face with peanut butter
So I had the opportunity to do the “Paint a Ghost on Thrifted Prints” trend that has tiktok by the balls…
And my take on this is rather than making my lil ghostie be front and center I want it to fit so well into the landscape that it’s like a “when you see it” meme.
Behold: The print of which I have thrifted
It’s got a lovely fall feeling w the sepia tone of colours to work with. And some prime real estate for espookies. With watercolour pencil in hand let’s get to work!
The Reveal:
In the words of my father, I really “broke my neck over this one.”
