Thoughts on the confrontation between five and Vanya in ofa for oga?

(this was in my drafts for like two hundred years, sorry!!)

at first i didn’t really like it but now i really do. the pain in five’s eyes when he thinks about the prospect of having to fight his sister is utterly heartbreaking. she’s his best friend who doesn’t even remember him, and the fact that they were currently at odds with one another really tests five’s limits at how far he’s emotionally capable of going to get his family back together, which is why he sounds so desperate in trying to get vanya to come with him.

and vanya, she wants to hold onto the only memories that she has, and that’s with sissy and harlan. when she says that “they’re insignificant,” five’s response “no one is insignificant” has a dual meaning, like the “sorry i left without saying goodbye,” meaning both “sorry i left your apartment without telling you” and sorry i ran away with no notice.” so the “no one is insignificant” really means that vanya was never insignificant, even when her and her siblings thought that she had no powers. but of course, she doesn’t remember that, and five knows that, which is why the subtlety of the line is so dire and melancholic. it’s in character for five’s tenacity for his family to be almost, and at times completely unnoticeable in front of them, and vanya’s memory loss tremendously aids in that subtlety. since vanya is harvesting her powers, taking in her surroundings and bonding with her siblings all with a completely fresh state of mind, she doesn’t know that five wants the best for her and the rest of his siblings. 

vanya blaming five for getting them stuck in dallas is essentially the point in this dialogue exchange where the dynamic changes to something a lot more personal which is,,, so good. the pressing danger of the briefcase running out of time to get them home indeed makes this scene engaging, but having one character point out that this was all of the other character’s fault shifts the whole tone of the scene and plots the two characters against each other in a much more personal way than before. 

and then!!! they both power down at the same time really ties together how strong their sibling bond is. i am interested, however to see how the fight would have turned out, because the two of them are arguably the most powerful siblings of the family. (i could be wrong about this but oh well) going back to five’s reaction of having to fight vanya, his powers don’t seem to be working as well as they normally do. he could’ve just spatial jumped away from her, but he doesn’t.  When his powers look the way that they do in this scene, it’s usually when he’s under a lot of stress (ex: landing in the apocalypse and failing to jump back, the fight with the swedes, at the department store.)

TLDR: i love this scene a lot because it shows the internal conflicts between both five and vanya in a way that isn’t too blatant.

i feel like my opinion on this is VERY unpopular but here we go: of course, it depends on how they write it and whether it’s sparrow five or not, but personally i’m scared that it will diminish the nuance of his character. throughout the two seasons, five is constantly faced with numerous problems, and he’s always chosen the solution that will save his family, proving that he is a good person. yes, five does kill a lot of people but he doesn’t do it because he’s “evil,” but because it’s necessary, (at least in his mind.) one of the major redeeming AND fundamental qualities is his love for his family.  the potential of five becoming “evil” could mean that the tenaciousness for his siblings gets taken away from his character, and that the shift from moral ambiguity to becoming “evil” would not be gradual. 

So seriously tho what’re we thinking about evil five?

Someone in the discord mentioned that Five would be growing like a weed now that he’s actually getting some proper nutrition, so i went to draw him a little taller but accidentally drew him getting coffee with Allison instead, funny how that happens. unpopular opinion: i would rather have diego and lila be written as best friends, since i personally felt that their romance took off too quickly. also, diego still loved lila after she tried to kill his family numerous times, which i personally feel is inconsistent to his character.
