Time Begins On Opening Day 2024: a season-long prompt meme for baseball rpf
Any league in the world, any team you love, any person in the 150+ year history of this sport - everyone’s welcome in this prompt meme. This year, the prompt meme covers the entire 2024 MLB season, from Opening Day on March 28 to Winter Meetings in December.
Fills must prominently include at least one baseball player who lived, breathed, and played in real life. Pairing prompts must include at least one real baseball player. General non-team/player prompts must involve baseball RPF in some way. Fandom and RPF crossovers are welcome, but all fills and prompts must prominently include at least one real life player.
🌞 Schedule 🌞 Prompts open: now!! Collection opens for posting: May 16 Soft Deadline #1: July 16 Soft Deadline #2: September 29 Final Deadline, collection closes for prompting and posting: Winter Meetings (December, TBD)
🌞 How this works 🌞 Prompting opens on Opening Day on March 28 and closes at Winter Meetings (exact date TBD.) The collection opens for posting on May 16. There are two soft deadlines for you to work for: July 16 (All-Star Break) and September 29 (end of the regular season). Shortly after these soft deadlines, your mod will post round up posts on tumblr. There is a hard deadline in December at Winter Meetings (final date TBD), at which point, the collection will close for posting and prompting.

this is my first prompt meme… i wanted to prompt gunnar henderson/adley rutschman but ao3 told me to contact mods bc it’s not canonical (no one has written them on there) so could you please add them as a tag/relationship? sorry i don’t really know how this works- thank you for your time
Hi! I cannot add them as a tag/relationship at this point due to how the prompt meme works. You can add their names into the prompt description though, so for example, it would look like this:
Pairing: Gunnar Henderson/Adley Rutschman
[Prompt]
And this goes for everyone who wants to prompt a player or pairing that doesn't have a canonical tag. You can see a helpful example of how someone did it with the Bo Bichette/Joey Votto prompt!
(tl;dr answer - for me to add them, we would have had to have a nominations period where people submitted the pairings and players that they wanted to write over the course of the writing period. But since this prompt meme covers 8 months of the year and an entire season, I didn't want to lock us into any specific tag set. The easiest way was to just write it into the prompt description itself.)
Thank you for asking!

Well, I wanted to open the collection at the start of the Angels-Orioles game, but AO3 is thoroughly down and has been all day. I'll open it as soon as AO3 is back online. In the meantime, enjoy Opening Day 🥳🥳 who are you all watching today?

Hello everyone! I will throw a real promo post into the mix when I open prompts at the end of the month but I wanted to give a couple of general updates before we go ham on Opening Day:
The 2024 collection is here, take a look at all the intro + FAQ + rules if you want, but it's all more or less the same except for dates.
Works will still be moderated because people cannot behave, but I'll keep to my 24hr turnaround promise. If that gets unmanageable, I will enlist someone else to help.
You can leave up to 50 prompts all season and if you need a burner to leave more honestly shine on, that's amazing dedication to the grind.
Schedule: March 28: prompts open May 16: collections open for posting July 16: Soft Deadline #1 September 29 : Soft Deadline #2 Winter Meetings (December, TBD): Final Deadline, collection closes for prompting and posting
And then I'll do round up posts for all the soft deadlines and the hard deadline.
I think those are all the most meaningful changes, obviously I'm open to feedback, but that seems like it'll cover most of what people wanted.
See you on March 28 😌

Looks like we've got a pretty clear consensus 💪 I will do battle with Canva for the next couple of days and then I will return with a new prompt meme!!
Question: when do you want the prompt meme open?
Hello everyone! I was pondering the nature of baseball fandom, as is normal to do in the middle of a random Sunday, and was thinking of opening this year's prompt meme at the start of the season and closing it around the end of postseason, with soft deadlines in between and a hard deadline at the end of the year. The schedule would that it opens on March 28th and closes sometime in November.
How does that make you all feel? Please vote and tell your friends:
Why do this? Well, some of the narratives to come out of this year's preseason are absolutely bugfuck. In addition, towards the end of last season, well after the prompt meme closed, there were some bananas narratives that we did not get to engage with and players were traded or walked, so inspiration kind of fizzled. I'm trying to think of a way to include the full breadth and scope of a season, while also acknowledging that this fandom is quite small.
Let me know! Thank you 🙇🙇

In case you missed it!! There seems to be an overwhelming consensus, but I'll leave it up to the end of the week.

Same anon here: Thanks for clarifying! I think that timeline (until winter meetings start) sounds good with prompts staying open throughout. I definitely like the idea of having a little time after the postseason to finish things up.
Great! Yes, someone advised me that a little buffer time after postseason would be good, to really let the narratives sink in.
Thank you so much for asking!

In the format you suggested, would the soft deadlines mean that works would get revealed periodically but prompts could get added until the end of the season? I'm very new to this sort of thing so I'm probably just missing something obvious, but I'm not clear on the deadlines for prompts vs for fics if that makes any sense. Sorry, and thanks for organizing this :)
Great question! I had to think about it. Short answer - no, as soon as I open the collection for posting, works will be revealed.
Long answer - I am thinking I would open the collection up for posting a month into the regular season. Our soft deadlines would be All-Star Break, the end of the regular season, and the start of winter meetings. I will do round up posts for each of those deadlines. I would close the collection for posting at the start of winter meetings. (And then start a new challenge again in March 2025 🥳)
Works will still be moderated because that one single person cannot behave, but the turn around time for your works getting approved will be within 24 hours.
Thank you for asking!! l always appreciate clarifying questions.
edit - thank you @gerritcole-coded for asking another clarifying question (because I absolutely whiffed on answering it) - yes, prompts would remain open all the way up until the end!

Hi everyone!
Quick update - I changed the collection settings so that works are moderated before they're added to the collection. So now when you respond to prompts or want to add works to the collection, you will have to wait for your work to be approved. The turn around for approval will be within 24hrs.
Work moderation should not affect most of you, unless you are the person who keeps adding works posted in 2013 to the collection in response to prompts posted this year. Don't do that! That's a dick move and you are being weird. Knock it off.
Everyone else, you're fine. Keep creating, keep posting! (And I'll see you later this year for round 2 👀)

Baseball asks, rpf-flavored
in honor of me forgetting to do round up posts for two months, I bring you a baseball rpf ask game:
60ft, 6 inches: What is your all-time pitcher-catcher romance and what would get them to confess their feelings for each other?
Trade bait: You can make two trades for your team for anyone in the MLB or MiLB. What two players do you trade for to create a top tier romance with existing players on the team?
We found love in a hopeless place: Whose relationship(s) are you powerfully compelled by on a team you absolutely hate, and why?
Cher - Believe.mp3: You have control of the clubhouse aux and you are determined to create some situations. What are you playing to set the mood and who in the clubhouse is the first to break?
Rule 5 romance: what rookies do you wish to see ascend the heights of AO3? And with whom?
Minor league blues: Which of your favorite fringe or minor league players are holding hands on the 9 hour bus ride to the next game? Are they doomed by the narrative or will they be franchise legends?
Sizzle reel: What is the wildest comment you've ever seen a player leave on the teammate's instagram and what are 3 ways their teammate could have responded?
Hall of Fame: Favorite romance between retired players and what you think they're up to now.
Hot Stove SZN: Create a chosen/found family or polycule (either existing on your team or through a series of convoluted trades) and tell us what tasks they canNOT be trusted with in the (club)house.
Pregame chess: Who is compelled by the raw sexual energy that the dweebiest player on your team exudes when he gloats over winning clubhouse card games?
Pennant race: Your favorite doomed romance between players on two rival teams and what bad decisions they make during the regular season or playoffs.
Cactus League: Who's taking their teammate(s) to In'n'Out for the first time and falling in love over milkshakes and lukewarm french fries?
Grapefruit League: Who's taking their teammate(s) to Waffle House and falling in love over a shared stack of pecan waffles?
Chosen One 4 Draft Pick #614: Who is your favorite superstar/just some guy romance and what does the superstar love about just some guy that makes him go "if you don't clap and cheer for him I'll blow this whole ballpark up"?
Time Begins on Opening Day: What's the most romantic thing about baseball and how will you leverage this into a love story for the ages?

November 2023 New Works Round Up
Hello everyone, I'm a day late due to the mortifying ordeal, but I'm here with a round up post! We have 3 new works this month in the collection, including a WIP that is currently being updated!
AO3 | All works | Ask box
New works, in no particular order (link in title):
I still need you there beside me, no matter what I do by Anonymous | St. Louis Cardinals | Steve Carlton/Tim McCarver
Left-handed pitchers are their own special breed of crazy. Catchers are their own special breed of crazy. It's a long, long road.
Luck be a Ballplayer by powderblu (bluspirits) | Philadelphia Phillies | Alex Bohm/Brandon Marsh
Alec isn't sure this counts as "just normal roommate things", but he doesn't exactly want Marshy to stop, so he keeps his mouth shut.
Superbloom by heartequals (savvygambols) | San Francisco Giants | Blake Sabol/Casey Schmitt
Casey wraps an arm around Blake’s neck while Blake’s distracted by Yas. Blake flails. Casey pulls him down to his chest. “Me and some of the guys were going out after the game,” he hisses in his ear. “Come out with me.”
The next round-up post will be posted sometime on Sunday, December 10 (unless I get caught up in stupid work bullshit again in which case we may be a day late), so if you need a new deadline, aim for the North American morning of December 10.
Under the cut: November Challenges for readers and creators + 3 questions for creators (for your WIPs or completed works) and a hot sidequest for everyone!
November Challenge for Readers: Before the December post, leave comments on FOUR works from the past two months, if you haven't left comments yet!
November Challenge for Creators: Before the December post do the following:
Writers, add THREE sentences on your work every day.
Artists, spend FIVE MINUTES on your work every day
Podfic? Five minutes of editing or ten minutes of recording every other day. Something else I’m not thinking of? Adjust accordingly to your medium.
3 Creator Questions: Answer in the notes, on your blog, or in the ask box!
Who was/is your favorite character to work on in (one of) your works you posted so far?
What's a line that didn't make it into the final cut that you really really wanted to include?
Would you trust the players in your work with the aux cord?
November Sidequest for Everybody: Make a rec post on tumblr of at least two works you particularly enjoyed from the challenge so far and include at least one line on why you liked them.
That's it for this month, folks! I'll be back on December 10. Remember that to create art is to push back the forces of darkness that threaten to destroy us (Manfred's nonsense), drink water, and leave comments!
As always, ask box is open and anon is on. I can also be reached at rpfisfine@/gmail.com 🌞
