A silly poster I whipped up today. The idea of someone being like âoh, I love talking heads!â And you hitting them with the âwoah, me too; do you have a favourite song?â And them being like âwhat? I was referring to when you canât see the body of the person being interviewedâ wriggled its way in and wouldnât come out. Anyway, this is the result!
This was my second ever foray into crochet and quite a bold project, both in color and scope. So, so many ends to weave in, and no set pattern for this one, though there are others online who have given recreating from the screen a go and who have been very helpful - see my Ko-Fi post (link in bio) for more details, including my attempt at writing it up.
Though definitely shagadelic, it's not perfect - l'd love to try blocking it to get some of the trim to sit with some more flounce but ran out of time before the event I wore it to. I may add a layer or two to the sleeves to make them more dramatically 60s flared, but for now, I'm thrilled!
I secured the dress to my shoulders with clutch fashion glue (not sponsored, just happy to have a product that works!) and it seemed to work a treat- can't wait to have a play with this some more, especially for temporary hemming and other fun textile work.
Byrne's Big Business: How a Simple Suit Stopped Making Sense and Became a Societal Symbol
(don't you just love a whimsical title?)
The whole piece is quite long as I wrote self-indulgently, so feel free to read the whole thing or skim through it a little. A flippable version as well as the full PDF with references are available at my Ko-Fi (access via link in bio).
I actually started this piece before the announcement, but since the catâs well and truly out of the bag RE the upcoming A24 4K re-release of the film, thereâs never been a better time to share. This drawing started out as a fun, pressure free side project, and eventually spawned an entire side foray youâll see in the next posts!
I love the textures achieved here with the mixed medium- cardboard really lent itself to the otherworldly structure of the big suit, and the neon pencils provide great contrast to the industrial watercolour.
Stop Making Sense is a Talking Heads concert film directed by Jonathan Demme (you may know his some of his other work, including 3x Oscar winner Silence of the Lambs) featuring the debut of the Big Suit as a soon to be cultural institution spoofed and styled for decades to come. I love Talking Heads and their particular brand of New Wave absurdism is very much up my alley and a great source of inspiration.
These illustrations are available for purchase, either on merch at redbubble (link also in bio) or by DMing me for a digital copy! I have found some of the official merch to be lacking the creativity of the show it promotes, so the goals with this one were to make something as fun, loud, and loose as the music!
this was my first time working with oil paints and so much fun, though lots of learning involved. Like any piece it was so hard to capture in photo, in part because it wonât be dry enough to varnish for at least another 6 months đł
reference credit to the fantastic cinematography on Better Call Saul! This piece is largely the result of not being able to get this scene out my head since I saw it.

more mini portraits while I work on likeness. really fun to have something I can feasibly finish within the hour when Iâve been working on a long haul project for days on end and need to have a sense of fulfilment from something
