Huff... Huff... Huff...
It was done. It... He was finally free. Or at least, as free as he could be.
Shade's hunched back was bathed in silver moonlight, body covered in fur as his hands had twisted into paws. A fuzzy, rat-like tail sat curled under his legs.
His breath was heavy and haggard, the taste of blood filled his mouth as his teeth had been replaced by irregular, sharp fangs. The ground was covered in stringy, sinewy flesh, the only remains of what had once been a human body.
There was a disgusting wet schlop sound as the beast began to devour the old flesh. It licked away at the blood, and gorged itself on what little it could. It was hungry, starving even. These table scraps weren't enough for it, it needed more.
Shade, meanwhile, was caught in an almost dream-like state of awareness. His body had gone through so much pain that chemicals had flooded his mind, relieving him of the pain he'd experienced.
His body was foreign to him now, piloted by something that wasn't entirely him.
The beast gave a stretch, arcing its back with an eerie crack. It let out a low rumble, sniffing and scratching at the floor. It continued to lick at the blood, hoping for whatever nutrition it could get. It hadn't quite figured out the concept of doors yet, thankfully.
"Shade? Everything alright up there?" Shade's dad called. The familiar sound was enough to cause both him and the beast to perk up, and a sense of cold ran down the back of his mind.
Oh no... OH GOD NO-
"Shade Andrew Lovell! Open this door!" Shade's dad pounded on the door. "Don't make me get the key!"
"Is everything alright Lawrence?" Shade's mom chimed from behind the door. "You're going to wake Maddy with all this noise..."
"I think something might've gotten into our son's room, I need to make sure he's alright-"
The beast growled, its body hunched as the fur prickled on its back. It was ready to defend itself, and in a sickening moment - its mouth pulled into an eerie, monstrous grin.
"Mama, what's wrong?" A little girl's voice rang out from behind the door.
"Stay behind me sweetie, daddy's just going to check if Shade's alright-"
Shade felt the muscles of the beast tighten, his mind entering a state of horrifying clarity as the door opened. A flash of blood, his sister's scream, the dead stare of his murdered mother.
The scariest thing was the fact that no one came to help them. For over an hour, the beast gorged itself on the bodies of Shade's family. He was powerless to stop it, trapped behind what once were his eyes, now eerie, animalistic orbs.
When the deed was done, the beast rested on his bed. Its belly and claws were covered in blood, mouth caked with the last of the Lovells.
The most horrifying part was that Shade felt good. His body was no longer hungry, his body was filled with a sense of comfort, and the smell of blood had permeated his nose. The fact his mind gave such a response to this horror made him hate himself even more.
It wasn't long before the wolf got bored. No longer hungry, it would now hunt for its own pleasure... Leaving Shade to stew in the thoughts of the atrocities his body committed against his will.
He was a monster, and now... He was truly alone.

Hey y'all, quick update!
I'm not dead, just been busy IRL. I've got two new entries in the works - one as a part two to the "Library" scene, and the one above - which is going to be a full reveal of Shade's werewolf form!
I've been caught up with college & moving lately, which has made it harder to work on art. The Library scene was underway, but unfortunately, the lineart got merged with the sketch layer so I'll have to redo it ^^;
For now have a quick WIP to tide y'all over, I'll have more entries soon!

A small break from your weekly horrors for a bit of dopamine - Shade in dumbass mode!
While it isn't canon to the main story, I like to imagine that werewolf puppies (aka any werewolf under the age of 12) are super playful and affectionate.
While they do undergo monthly transformations, werewolf pups are far more versatile and tend to bounce back more quickly. They are energetic, loving, and enjoy going on walks with their caretakers.
Werewolves are omnivores, and thus are capable of eating any food a human can eat. Werewolf pups have often shown a liking for orange juice, beef jerky, hot dogs - and most importantly: Fruit Snacks.
However, it is important to note that too much sugar can cause a werewolf to have a tummy ache. Parents of werewolves are advised to reduce the amount of sugar intake on full moons, as it can lead to indigestion.
In the event your werewolf pup returns with a kill (such as a bird, rabbit, or other small animals), do not panic! This is merely a hunting instinct and a sign that they care about you - rather than violent intent. They are young and still learning to fend for themselves, so they will often give their caretakers "gifts" - both as a sign of thanks, and an attempt to contribute to the household.
Werewolf pups are most notable for their soft, downy fur - compared to the coarse and somewhat greasy hide that their adult counterparts have. This fur requires consistent brushing and grooming to prevent matting. A local dog groomer will suffice, but it can be an embarrassing conversation to have. Just be sure not to shave their coat, as werewolves are double-coated!
Finally, werewolf pups are full of love - and require consistent attention. Just like humans, they are a social species and rely heavily on family and friends. Some theorize that a born werewolf will behave in a docile or even protective manner around their loved ones provided enough care, even leading into adulthood.
Caring for a werewolf is a lot of work, but worthwhile. They are loyal providers and very intelligent, both in human and wolf form. What you give to them, they will return tenfold.

Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card!
Werewolves... Werewolves - god, why did 90% of it have to be smut? Why the hell do they even let this stuff into the library- ah-hah!
Shade plucked a dusty old book from the library shelf. He ran his fingers over the old leather cover, nearly sneezing from the amount of dust that had flown off this thing upon being touched. He flicked through the pages with care, one tug too hard and the yellowed sheets would disintegrate.
The parchment pages of the book were stained with coffee, carrying the scent of countless years of age and dust. Shade made sure to check - to make sure no one was looking. Seemed like everything was quiet, thankfully. He deliberately came early, no one's gonna be at the library at 7am anyways.
The Lycanthrope, scientifically known as "Homo Lycanus" is the scientific name for a rare variant of humans infected by a very ancient disease. The disease itself is estimated to have first appeared just after the Cretaceous period.
Initially, it was an infection that resided in primates - slowly tracking down lineages as it traded numbers for potency. What initially started off as higher aggression soon turned into an entire morphological change that was directly correlated with higher infection rates.
Scientists estimate that the first appearance of a "werewolf" (or man-wolf) was during the initial domestication of wolves. The interaction likely resulted in a cross-species contamination, wherein a wolf was infected with the Lycaenus disease, and spread it to other wolves.
This, unfortunately, led to multitudinous and unjustified deaths of wild wolves during the 18th and 19th centuries. While presenting asymptomatically, the disease adapted to wolf biology - which would bear catastrophic results for any human who happened to be bitten by an infected wolf.
Unfortunately, we are still unable to determine the correlation between the full moon and a forced transformation. Some have hypothesized that it is actually a spike in adrenaline and cortisol that causes the disease to present itself - a form of parasitic self-preservation turned up to an unnatural degree.
No cure has been discovered yet, beyond herbal remedies of superstition and death. We suspect vaccination could aid in the prevention of spreading it, but we have yet to find a willing test subject. Once lycanthropes start showing symptoms, treating it becomes far more difficult - perhaps impossible.
One thing is for certain, though. The longer a lycan remains infected, the more strain it places on his body. Every shift, even minor ones - can cause irreparable damage to the muscle and bone - let alone frequent blood loss.
No lycan has died a man, and those in old age find it harder and harder to shift back. It is why we must find this cure...
Shade's hand shook as his grip tightened on the book. He felt his heart rate spike, a sudden strike of fear causing a pang of pain in his chest. Without thinking, he quickly turned and started to bolt towards the door. There was a loud crack, his leg buckling as he felt a claw dig out of one of his shoes. It took a lot of effort not to scream...
There was already a sense of pressure in his back, he didn't have much time to get to his dorm. The horrifying, wet schlick sound met his ears as claws burst out under his nails, beads of blood dripping onto the book. The claws dug small holes into the cover, and slowly - the blood seeped into the pages. Thankfully, this wasn't a full moon. He could maintain control and prevent a full change if he just stayed calm-
Thud.
Of course there was someone else here... And he just had to run into them...

Oh God... he was stuck.
There was a lot to fear as a werewolf. Being shot, being captured or experimented on... But nothing was quite as terrifying as the risks of merely transforming.
"Please... Just get it over with..." Shade thought to himself, caught in a painful stasis between the final stage of the shift and sweet release. Bits of skin remained loosely wrapped around his body, leaving him to gasp as he tore away the few remaining bits of pale, bloody flesh. What's worse is he could smell every part of it, every fleshy bit, every drop of blood, sweat, and tears that had come from this hellish torture.
His new skin, what little showed itself near his hands and feet - were tough and leathery. Every part of his body ached, his heart struggling to keep up with his current state. Every strand of wirey, greasy fur stood on end as he scraped against the floor, writhting in the current state of limbo.
It wasn't the first time this had happened either, every time was a little different. Most months, he simply shifted, lost control, and had to give away the driver's seat to the beast that drove his body. Other times, he blacked out from the pain - leaving him to either pass out in his apartment, or wake up in a ditch the next day.
Not this time though. Today just had to be the worst option.
It felt as if Shade had a stone caught in his throat, the wolf's head forcing its way up through his neck as always - but no, this time it was stuck. Caught at the back of his throat just out of reach of his fingers... Well, at least that's what it felt like.
There was a distinct hacking sound as he barely managed to breathe, coughing up thick, viscous blood as the final changes refused to happen. For now, his teeth and gums protruded from his mouth, leaving for a painful pinching sensation on his nose. His actual nose had yet to snap away from the skin on top, making it feel as if there was a perpetual sense of pressure on his face.
His vision remained blurry as he could barely stay upright, praying that he would somehow pass out. He willed, no, begged the beast to finally come out. He'd been trapped in this state for nearly twenty minutes, a lump forever in his throat.
It took a great deal of energy not to make too much noise, not to scream or moan in pain - the last thing he needed was the landlord getting on his ass. Every haggard breath came with a small vocalization, vocal chords near-shot as his voice was layered and far deeper than usual. In the back of his mind he heard the sound of the wolf's howl, the horrifying scream-howl which had haunted the town of Lockheart for years now.
He prayed for the feeling of release, to slip through his own skin - even if it meant feeling the disgusting, slimy sense of viscera against his new face... To close his eyes as it completed its final push and simply let go.
But not now... Not tonight. For now he was trapped in the hell of his own body, forever conscious of the excruciating pain that made him want to claw out of his own skin... His own, bodily cage.

SOS she's in disguise... There's a she-wolf in disguise...
The curse was different in the early days. Equally as painful, but not nearly as gruesome. Back then, no more than claw marks were left behind - now, every full moon appeared like a murder scene... At least, if the beast wasn't hungry enough to "clean up" afterward.
The first time was easily the worst, over the years Shade had grown somewhat used to it... Attempted to find some form of enjoyment in the brutal process. It had become an excuse to let loose, run in the woods without a care in the world... But silver linings meant little to a werewolf.
He could remember his screams, the sense of having a sharp blade jabbed into his lungs as his ribs shifted and expanded. His shoulder blades dislodged from his back as his spine gave a small popping sound. It stretched beyond belief, his torso growing longer as he could no longer remain upright.
He was becoming longer... Stronger. As he grew larger, scars on his chest stretched to a painful degree, reopening as small beads of blood slowly leaked from the old wounds. His legs snapped as bones shifted, claws digging into the hardwood.
The worst part of it was the tail... The goddamn tail. Throughout the entire spinal section, Shade had been overwhelmed with an electrical sensation. It danced across his back, and it took a great deal for him to suppress the scream as he felt vertebrae snap in two in order to form the extra appendage.
He could hear his parents stomping up the stairs, his sister's cries of concern... Those were the last things he'd heard as "himself," before his mind was muddled with overwhelming senses... Taken over by instinct as the beast claimed control.
The worst part is he could remember it all. Every bite, every drop of blood... Every death on his hands. How he so desperately wished he could banish the taste of human blood from his memory... But there was no control for him.
No, Shade was a mere passenger as his own body. A quadrupedal, horrifying, mangled body.

Hot... No, burning. That was what he first felt when the moon rose. It was as if his skin was burning up from the inside, being scalded by his own body.
Claws burst through his fingertips, splitting the skin as blood trickled down his fingers. It was a momentary relief from the building pressure, and almost as if it were instinct - he clawed at his chest and neck. It took a great deal of effort to tear through his already tough skin, but he needed to be out... to be free.
The worst place was always his face. He could feel his eyes blur as his skull shifted underneath. The skin of his ears cracked and split, a pair of new pointed ears covered in coarse hair pierced through like a cartilage spear. The skin slowly fell away, the shifting under his skin causing more tears on the back of his neck.
His teeth fell out, replaced by sharpened, blood-covered fangs. His tongue fell out of the side of his mouth, nearly choking him as it had grown too big for his jaw.
He sat hunched, giving hoarse breaths as his head jolted forward. With a crack, something forced through his mouth, breaking through his lips. His nose was pushed back, brow flattening as his spine cracked under the sudden shift in weight.
Neck stretching, he leaned back as a wolf's muzzle forced through his jaw, breaking the skin as it slowly tore open at the corners. It was as if the metamorphosis required him to break through the shell, blood staining every inch of wirey fur as it even leaked from his eyes.
It would be over soon... Soon he'd be nothing but a pile of flesh, and the beast that beat at his racing heart... A beast that knew no mercy, even to those he loved.
It had been far too long...
