YALL. everyone go watch story of kunning palace i swear it’s worth it im still riding an insane high after i finished it last night.
it’s a very good solid drama for 30 episodes kinda slow burn but well written with good characters and decent plots.
and then in the last 8 episodes, the guy’s sidekick tells him “maybe you should show her how you really feel. show her the real you” and he proceeds to go batshit feral insane. which after watching her pine after and then reject the most morally upright guy ever it fucking WORKS ON HER because she is ALSO insane!!
after that it’s just 8 episodes of him being sloppy desperate for her and begging her to give him an answer while she’s just there buffering because she has to readjust her whole worldview with this news that he’s liked her all along?? she went out to meet her former crush and when she got home he sat her down and made her eat a dinner he made. that was drowning in vinegar. because if he had to drink vinegar then SO SHOULD SHE. and after she doesn’t eat much at dinner he plops down a tray of her favourite cake. that he had given her before earlier in the drama. announces that he made it with his own hands. and she’s like :0 “you made it for me even back then?? but back then we were only….” and he’s immediately like “only? only what? what were we back then? what about now? is it different now? what are we?” and she’s just like .

Deity in Last Mission: sure, you were hounded and tormented to death by your father and never got to live as a human past childhood. But! Because your dad killed you he repented which saved his soul and a bunch of random kids got to receive the kindness and concern he withheld from you, so fair trade, I'd say!
Me:
Tumblr media
The only thing as powerful as the romance in that drama was my rage at its system
My Demon is a rare drama where I am loving it more and more with each episode - usually I either like it about as much as I did with the first ep or often, disappointingly, I like it a little less with each ep.
But I am totally addicted here.
I love that it's funny but we also have these quiet moments where we see demon boy is catching feelings and it's glorious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It helps that their chemistry is insane!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the thing that gets me excited is that this is all clearly a prelude to some serious angst. I mean look at the clearly supernatural lady comment as she's watching them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not that I ever needed her to remind us. I've watched enough supernatural-themed kdramas. Now off to weep in a corner in Angel's Last Mission, Goblin, Secret Garden, Bulgasal etc.

As realistic as it was that they never reconciled with that heinous woman, I hated that they let her have anything to do with their kids! She hated their love so much to the point of treating them like air, so how dare get to enjoy and be loved by the fruits of that very love?!
About Last Mission, I can't believe I'm not the only one, lol! Yes, yes, that God was horrifying. Seriously, there were a run of kdramas there that were like, this is what the divine will get you...
The vulnerability of the creatures either seeking humanity or hurt by it... My favorite remains the tragic love story Lee Seung Gi's gumiho guardian father and human mother. Honestly wanted the whole show to be about them, they went so hard, lol.
Oh my God, Queen In Hyundai, that ending!!!!! Seriously. Seriously. Seriously. Seriously. Oftentimes kdramas stumble in their starts, or muddle their middles, or eff up their ends but that dram was perfection from start to finish. That end episode though, the torture the ML was put through was agonizing.
Nothing quite hits like a kdramas fantasy romance or a cdrama costume historical when done even reasonably well. It's like, FEED ME
My Demon is a rare drama where I am loving it more and more with each episode - usually I either like it about as much as I did with the first ep or often, disappointingly, I like it a little less with each ep.

today's random snippets of strangely established relationship moments in the Story of Kunning Palace novel. wherein our girl is grieving for You Fangyin.
//
But today, she didn't say or do anything, yet Xie Wei seemed to know what she was thinking.
She did want to talk to someone.
It's just that after realizing that he knew everything, she kept in silence, and it seemed that there was no need to say any more.
Jiang Xuening sat down quietly on the small wooden bench next to the stove, watched Xie Wei put the chopped diced into the ready-to-cook porridge, took a spoon to stir it slowly, and finally said: "I haven't really killed people."
Xie Wei stirred it well, and put the lid on the pot again.
He also sat down by the stove, next to her. His eyes fell on the red-hot coals, and he was extremely calm: "There is always a first time."
Jiang Xuening slowly hugged her knees, leaned down, blinked, seemed to be thinking more, and did not speak.
Xie Wei was beside her.
After waiting for a while, when the outside was completely quiet, he poured some porridge into a bowl and served it to her. The two of them didn't bother to move an extra table, they just sat by the stove and ate a half-hot bowl in this slightly cold frosty night.
Xie Wei sent her back to the house, knowing that she was not in a very good mood. He tucked her into the bed, kissed her on the lips, and said: "We won't practice the qin tomorrow morning, you can sleep late."
[... Some Time Later...]
Zhou Yinzhi gritted his teeth, stared at her, and his voice came out of his throat like dripping blood: "The girl promised! That letter! You clearly promised, as long as I am willing to help the insider, you will forget the past, forgive me."
Jiang Xuening looked at him with pity: "So you actually believed it?"
At this moment, Zhou Yinzhi's face turned ashen.
But Jiang Xuening just raised her head, looked at the city gate that had been opened wide, thinking that the world is ridiculous, and said slowly: "That's right, in the eyes of Mr. Zhou, a person like me is considered good and easy to deceive."
She thought, it's getting late, and it's better not to delay the army from entering the city.
So she stretched out her hand to the swordsman beside her.
Jianshu handed the sword to her.
She has almost never held a sword. The sharp long sword was pulled out of the sheath, as if the weight of human life was pressed on the blade, and it fell heavily on the human wrist. When the sky shone, the cold light glistened!
Zhou Yinzhi was struggling.
But there were soldiers on the left and right who came up and held him down.
Jiang Xuening was struggling to hold the sword.
Xie Wei stepped up, covered hers with his palm, helped her hold the sword tightly, only directed it towards Zhou Yinzhi's neck, and smiled softly: "I'll teach you."

I still remember how I broke watching Han Ji Won drop to her knees to sob and beg the wretched mother in Secret Garden. The way she kept sobbing "I was wrong!" shook me! Right up there with Hyun Bin driving her unconscious self into a rainstorm... Or his cousin crying and calling him a fool and basically an asshole for expecting him not to try to uno reverse the body switch to get him back...! So. Many. Tears.
I blocked out Last Mission, I swear to God. I think there were a cascade of eps where I just went, what sadistic tear-loving fuck crafted this mess?! Wait. I distinctly remember finding out our sweet little angel's back story and yeah, we are just going to tuck that one back in the trauma box.
And Goblin, oh, Goblin! The half-broken bromance! The tragic love stories! The broken Joseon king that near had me begging for sequel drama focusing entirely on the tragedy of his hubris and love!
And here, in this year 2023, it appears KDrama land is trying to give us another bounty of pain. Because sure, why not? Bring on the pain!

I watched Last Mission. I watched Goblin. I watched Secret Garden. All three at various points in their narrative decided it would be best to turn me into a sobbing wreck for a night and a half. Good times.

Yeah, Netflix-produced kdramas have huge budgets, fancy sets, high tech cameras, sleek cinematography, and big name actors, but do they have:
Dramatic tea slaps?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evil stepsister ripping up and eating her paternity test results?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Very important shareholder meetings held in school auditoriums that are attended by maybe 20 people max?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dramatic fights between father-in-law and daughter-in-law?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tacky over the top fashion that screams "I'M EVIL!" in big flashing neon lights?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dramatic close ups that make it seem like it'll take an eternity to hit the main character?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last but not least, this gem of a woman who totally understood the assignment and is living her best campy evil stepmother life?

I didn't think so!

I'm leaving this right here.
For my hormones. Fuck science.
Flashback Scene from SOKP Episode 31
Ok, even though I haven't recovered, I am still going back and rewatching Episodes 31-32.
I love this flashback scene immensely. Not only is it hotter than hell, but it also shows both fierce adversaries come together because they are the SAME.
Tumblr media
Both are like two dragons or tigers circling eachother and sizing eachother up. Regardless of the fact that Ning'er is coming to Xie Wei for help as a last ditch effort to protect herself, the both of them don't give an inch to one another.
Tumblr media
Both have the potential to be a ruling power couple of epic proportions. But, both are too damaged at this point to fully make it work. Still, the tension is there. Xie Wei is very tempted to act on his desire. And Ning'er is willing.
Tumblr media
You can tell that Xie Wei really thinks about it, and in return he almost seduces HER, when she is the one trying to seduce HIM. They really are like minded individuals trying to survive and failing.
Tumblr media
And then he rejects her. But, the act still sticks in Ning'er's mind in her second life. It's one of the reasons why she gets so confused about Xie Wei's attentions. She can't figure him out. So she floats in the sea of denial.

Story of Kunning Palace Ep. 25: Over the threshold of regret and possibility
Tumblr media
There are very few things I love more than a good doorway shot.
Doorways symbolize many things. They're the boundary between what is seen and unseen, what is known and unknown. They're the threshold between the pasts we leave behind and the futures we seek ahead. They're full of regret and possibility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seeing how one of the threads that connect Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei is their ability to truly recognize the good and bad within one another, something that struck me about Episode 24 was the ways in which doorway coverings were used to represent the barriers to that fragile understanding. These coverings allow the characters to gaze at one another from a distance (and avoid confronting their feelings) while also obfuscating the reality of what they’re looking at.
For example, after apologizing to him about her role in the Tongzhou battle, Ning-er doesn't quite know how to interact with Xie Wei. On one hand, his quick thinking not only saved her and Zhang Zhe but also everyone on the mountain. It's just one more addition to the increasingly long list of good deeds Xie Wei has done for her. And yet she still doesn't see the significance of those acts.
And for Xie Wei, gazing at Ning-er and Zhang Zhe walking through the snow together catapults him into a fit of jealousy, not realizing that would be the night Ning-er starts pulling away from Zhang Zhe. Because he shut his door, he completely missed how she returned to her room alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Side Note: I want to take a moment to appreciate the actor blocking and camera language in this rejection scene. It's subtle but devastating.
When Ning-er first sees Xie Wei through the door coverings, we get a close-up shot of her hopeful face. She steps towards the door so Xie Wei can see her as Xue Dingfei asks if he wants to attend her dinner. She is waiting FOR HIM.
But when Xie Wei declines, we get a long shot showing the seemingly irreparable distance between the two of them before the camera settles once again on her face. This time her expression is hurt. For a moment, she thought things could be different between the two of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Xue Dingfei asks Xie Wei again, we see he is about to say no, but then he notices Ning-er outside and he pauses FOR HER. He wants confirmation that she wants him there. The camera then racks focus on Ning-er through the doorway. Stung by his earlier rejection, she gives him an excuse not to come.
I adore how the camera work starts intimate with all those close-up shots of Ning-er and Xie Wei's faces and gets more and more distant to represent their inability to communicate. He didn't want to stay away and she wanted him to be around but they missed each other's cues. These two are a bittersweet comedy of missed opportunities. And poor Xue Dingfei has to play wingman sober.
While some thresholds can be crossed with little thought, others require courage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we finally see that courage in Episode 25 when Xie Wei notices Ning-er through the doorway of Zhang Zhe's home and chases after her. His comforting embrace shatters any illusions she might have had that he didn't care for her at least somewhat.
Neither knows what is next but they have crossed the threshold into possibility.

Am I dreaming or is it real that, at last, XW has consciously started to accept his feelings? But then again, he is walking on the thin line between laying his emotions bare and concealing them for the sake of protection.
Without exaggeration, I was internally reacting throughout that opening scene:
-"I didn't use you."
*Omg he means 'You're an exception.' Is he going to spill it?
-"You saved my life back then"
*curses* You, stubborn boy!
He looked for a plausible excuse (which didn't take much time because, c'mon, he is a mastermind) so that he could avoid being an open book about his feelings. But it's not actually an "excuse". For him, it is not just about owing his life to her. It's one of the memories that matters him the most. It's a milestone in his life.
And when Ning'er meant "I save everyone. You're no exception" our man GULPED. He had to gulp and stomach the ugly truth that it wasn't as significant for her as it was for him. Ouch! (And his anger led him to the same old method of disguising himself as a passive-aggressive teacher) *sighs*
