earth day for us consists of watching a documentary about the planet and oceans, talking about the importance of taking care of Godโs creation, and some fizzy play that I whipped up last minute.

the thought of teaching a child how to read can seem overwhelming, but it doesnโt have to be!
in all honesty, weโve taken a slow approach with a lot of breaks when needed. my goal, in our homeschooling journey, is making the learning process enjoyable even when we are tackling the โhardโ things. for us, that means not pushing or making them feel like there is a quota that needs to be met.
what weโre doing โ
๐ฆ talking to the boys about how useful a topic, like reading, can be and encouraging them to take the first step. my first grader told me that he wanted to learn how to read last summer because he wanted to be able to read stories to his little brothers. I took that as a sign that he was ready and ran with it.
๐ฆ using the book โteach your child to read in 100 easy lessonsโ as our main tool when it comes to the formal lessons. I bought this two years ago and tried to use it with my then 5 year old, but he wasnโt ready โ so we put it away.
I brought it out this fall again, and we are now flying through it!
instead of being discouraged because heโs not grasping the concepts, we waited until he showed interest and I cannot emphasize that enough. it was the BEST choice. sometimes, kids donโt follow the traditional learning curve that is pushed by school systems and thatโs okay!
๐ฆ having easy reader books readily available all over the house and reading together throughout the day. also, asking my son to help me read to his brothers and giving him positive feedback as he tackles the longer words / the more complex vocabulary โ it makes the process more enjoyable.
๐ฆ word activities / playing games instead of marking it as โschool time.โ this has been a game changer for me in the schooling realm. anything that is marked as a game has been well received when it comes to the hard subjects. with boys Iโm finding that giving them room to wiggle around prompts more success.
think letter tiles, flashcards, writing on white / chalk boards, etc.
in short โ
make it fun, don't rush and be content with taking the time needed to learn at their pace. removing quotas and benchmarks are the best thing you can do!

when you think you found a homeschooling co-op that is the perfect fit and then everything falls through. this mama is left scrambling now that all our valentine day party plans evaporated.
I know no one really talks about this, but homeschooling parents can be just as dramatic as the PTA ones and letโs just say I wasnโt expecting it.
at first, it felt like such big bummer, but now, Iโm so thankful. not everyone is going to mesh with your goals and outlook, and thatโs okay. sometimes the best thing is a clean break โ even when you least expect it.
I was wondering how I was going to show and teach the kids to love on people who may hurt you, and this is the PERFECT opportunity to do just that. so hereโs to dusting ourselves off and continuing the search of finding โour homeschooling people.
I know this caption isnโt on brand with my regular content, but just in case someone is going through the same thing, I see you and itโs gonna work out for the best. *hugs*

martin luther king jr.
itโs a snow day in our neck of the woods, but on this MLK observation day, I am thinking of his words: ๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ก๐ก๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ก๐ช๐จ ๐๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ฉ๐๐งโ๐ฉ๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐จ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐ค๐๐ก ๐ค๐ ๐ฉ๐ง๐ช๐ ๐๐๐ช๐๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ.
there are a lot of conversations swirling around the best way to celebrate today and I donโt want to add to the noise. โฃinstead, I want to point to the Word of God because thatโs where I go when the world gets noisy or when I want + need some direction.
God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
there is no question โ we are called to love all; those who look different, who think different, who act different, and those who hurt us. His blood covered us all.
God calls us to shine His light through the way we speak to our neighbors and care for our fellow humans. MLK, who was a minister, knew this and was often quoted saying things like,
so even if there is a lot of noise surrounding how best to approach this day, youโll find me talking about the importance of loving + respecting your neighbor because the behavior of our children and treatment of others begin with what conversations we are having at home.
this should motivate us to be better, speak in truth, and love all of His people because little eyes are always watching.
as one of my favorite prayers from Dr. King reads: โฃ

giving an official welcome to Sir Boneifer as part of our homeschooling decor or rather, his twin brother, Napoleon Bone-Apart.
here's a little back story about our skeleton friend:
my son, who loves anatomy, got this skeleton model as a Christmas present. I saw him on our homeschooling table the other day and that gave me an idea!
I got some ribbon and made him a scarf โ it is winter after all! then, I offered him a cup of hot chocolate (ornament) whilst placing him on our homeschooling hutch. ๐
a few hours later, my son asked where his skeleton was, and I told him to go look for it. He got his brothers in on the hunt and the search began. the giggles that erupted when they finally found him and the โHEY MOM, HE HAS A SCARF?!โ squeals literally made my day.
We all loved it so much that Iโve decided that Iโll be decorating / dressing him for every season!
*I had to buy another because my kid wants his toy back. LOL so we'll be naming our new skeleton friend, Naopleon Bone-Apart and give Sir Boneifir to his rightful owner.
