2) And can i just add, maybe it’s just me but i thought if terano was gonna call someone out for the switch thing, it would be kirari or both of them and not ririka. It makes me think that ririka is even more scarier than kirari and not just the submissive one we see her to be i mean obviously we’ve seen moments of her like that. 3) also what did u think about s2e10 when sayaka asked kirari if “it was really her”, in the manga it’s different translation,
This topic is so hot I’m going to put it behind a cut 🤣
I understand the dramatic potential in a big reveal that shows Ririka was the one holding power and making plans the whole time. BUT this isnt the kind of storytelling I’ve come to expect from Kakegurui. The twists in the story usually aren’t about surprising the reader with new information about a character’s established personality and motivation. Instead the drama comes more from characters making difficult choices according to their own values, and challenging themselves to consider what they really want. So when I think about Kirari and Ririka, I think that Kirari really IS the one who really wields the power. I think that Ririka is a big PART of that power, but it’s still Kirari’s power - the power for Kirari to be in two places at once. I think that in the Election Arc Mary has inspired Ririka to start thinking about what she really wants for herself and what she thinks is right - but I think those kind of of thoughts had been repressed and negated for a long time, not just hidden from view. Ririka may be thinking about making a move against Kirari, but I doubt that it’s a long-running secret plan.
This ties into the question of what was up Sayaka’s weird question during her “job interview.” I don’t speak Japanese so I can’t parse the meaning of what was said and all the various English translations, but it seems Sayaka is asking “Did I really see what I thought I saw?” She believes she saw Kirari courageously and confidently risk everything against impossible odds and win - but in the meeting, she suddenly questions that memory. I definitely get why some people think that implies a twin switch - but I don’t think Ririka was the one that won the march for the Presidency. I think it’s important for Kirari’s character that that moment was HER gamble, that that moment kicked off her reign at Hyakkou as this sort of horrifying god-queen who can do the impossible and step into the unknown without fear.If there was any twin switching going on, I think it would be a case where the person Sayaka was talking to in her “interview” was actually Ririka, and thats why Sayaka senses something is off. Note that Ririka accompanies Kirari when she goes to actually invite Sayaka to be council secretary. Maybe Ririka told Kirari about the meeting, and Kirari was like “lol, take me to her.”

Even though I think that all makes sense from a character perspective, it could actually be a lot simpler than that. Maybe no switches took place at all in this case. It could simply be that Sayaka is just is having a hard time reconciling that the amazing brilliant Kirari that she has built up in her mind really exists as a physical person that she can talk to and interact with. That’s kind of the nature of obsession, the “real” person is very different from the image in the obsessors head.

you have Good Takes so i’m curious abt what you think of Kirari Momobami as a character. i think she’s really fascinating (probably my personal fav). her relationship w Sayaka is so intriguing and the whole tower of doors arc is just 😮😮
Thank you for saying I have Good Takes 😭
Kirari’s the boss. At Hyakkaou, she’s power personified. She’s queen, god, head of the iluminanti, CEO, the master planner. But that could be boring - people who just hoard power and then do everything they can to hold on to it are realistic but boring villains. Kirari is not like that, because in addition to everything I just mentioned she’s also the Marquis de Sade. She wants to see and experience everything. Her interest is not in power for its own sake, she uses her immense power as a means to explore, to arrange, to access. She’s totally focused on her own perceptions and her own interests - everyone and everything around her is either something to observe or an instrument to help her observe something else. Observe and taste.
I like Tower of the Doors a lot, but I think of that story as being primarily about Sayaka, and about what it feels like to be obsessed with someone/something beyond reason. The two moments that most define Kirari for me are these:

I love these scenes because they demonstrate how dangerous it is to be in the same room with the President. You never know when she’s going to make you an offer that will completely change your life. If her attention is on you, she’s probably thinking about what she can do with you, and it’s probably not what you expect.

Reminder that througout the Kakegurui manga and anime, we have never seen Ririka and Kirari actually speak to each other.
Unless I’m forgetting something, these are the only two interactions we ever see between the twins:
Chapter 17, on her way to the Momobami family meeting, Fake Kirari/Actual Ririka glances at Actual Kirari/Fake Ririka before talking to Sayaka.  They don’t speak, it’s just a silent check in.
Tumblr media
Chapter 58, Ririka recalls making a promise (pinky swear?!) to Kirari to fight alongside Mary in the Election.
Tumblr media
That’s it! There is some excellent fanfic that imagines how these two might actually speak to each other, but I hope we eventually get a conversation/confrontation/dramatic moment between the two of them in official storyline.

What do u think of the twins? Some studies say that when one twin(kirari), have mental illness(i mean she is kinda sociopathic), chances are the other twin might also have it. Genetic and environment factors have to do with it also. And knowing how momobamis are, the twins are raised in a not loving way. And they’re also crazy and powerful people. So what do u think about kirari and ririka separately?
There is a moment in the series that indirectly addresses this point, it’s one of my favorite small moments.  It’s towards the beginning of “The Zero Girl” - Rei has just told everyone the story of Yumeko’s sister being destroyed by the Momobami clan, and Suzui, ever the innocent, asks if such a horrible story could be true.
Tumblr media
Midari (who, despite her slobbering lack of impulse control, often makes very incisive observations) knows what’s up. Why would we expect anything less from the family that produced a destroyer of worlds like Kirari?

Midari directs her last remark at Ririka, who is then given a meaningful close up, even as she does not move or respond.

btw, I LOVE when the show cuts to Ririka as if for a reaction, though she stays completely still and silent. It emphasizes her inhuman creepiness, but also encourages the viewer to imagine what she might actually be thinking. And in this case, what might she be thinking?
Is she thinking of the horrors she herself endured in that family?
Is she thinking of the terrible things she did to people like Rei? Was she passive in these injustices, or an active participant?
Is she thinking that no outsider could possibly understand what happens in the clan? That it’s boring to have to sit there and listen to Rei talk about something totally beyond their comprehension?
Does she feel guilt? Shame? Pride? Defensiveness? Anger?
We can only imagine, but the fact that Ririka offers to officiate the subsequent gamble between Yumeko and Rei may say something about what responsibility she feels to those that her clan has wronged. And of course, there is the moment afterwards where Mary asks if Ririka identified with Rei, which I wrote about briefly in this post.
So all of that is to say...I think Ririka and Kirari are very different people, though the recent flashback to their childhood in the manga seems to show that when they were very young, they were truly identical, both in body and in character. However at some point they seemed to have split into sun and shadow, an operator and a vessel. I would love to know more about what caused this fracture, I would guess it correlates with the point in time when Ririka started wearing the mask - but did the change in character necessitate the mask, or did the mask bring about the change in character? We may never know!
Final thought - while I do believe Ririka is more sensitive and fearful than Kirari, we have seen plenty of examples of her wielding power in a very cold and merciless way (her part in the poisoning of Yumeko, her defeat of Rin). Just as Midari points out that we should not be surprised by the vicious actions of the clan that raised the president, we should likewise not be surprised by the capabilities of the person who grew up alongside her.
