Untitled (Perfect Lovers), 1987 two clocks 13 ½ x 27 ½ x 1 ¾ inches (34 x 70 x 4 cm) overall clocks, each 13 ½ x 13 ½ x 1 ¾ inches (34 x 34 x 4 cm) © Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Courtesy of The Felix Gonzalez-Torres Foundation
In tribute to his partner, Ross Laycock, Gonzalez-Torres mounts two matching battery-powered wall clocks side-by-side. Only just touching, the two clocks are initially set in unison, only to slip further and further out of sync with each other as time passes. Laycock–who Gonzalez-Torres describes in an interview as the only true audience for his work–was ill with AIDS at the time that Gonzalez-Torres conceived this piece. He succumbed to the disease in 1990, six years before Gonzalez-Torres’ death.
“Time is something that scares me … or used to. This piece I made with the two clocks was the scariest thing I have ever done. I wanted to face it. I wanted those two clocks right in front of me, ticking."  –Gonzalez-Torres

Felix Gonzalez-Torres “Untitled” (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) 1991
“This installation is an allegorical portrait of the artist’s partner, Ross Laycock, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991. The 175 pounds of candy can be seen to correspond to Laycock’s ideal body weight. Adult visitors are invited to take a piece of candy; the diminishing pile parallels Laycock’s weight loss prior to his death. The museum can choose to replenish the pile, metaphorically ensuring Laycock perpetual life, or to let the pile disappear over time.”
As a queer artist Felix has inspired me to not be afraid to make queer art, I am grateful to experience one of his many great pieces of art in real life. This piece will always have a special place in my heart.

Yuan Capote
Paranoia, 2006 to 2013
The artist traced the profiles of various anonymous people from their shadows projected on a wall, to create an analogy between a railing and the representation of multiple individuals. Like a barred window giving onto a blank wall, this work conveys a feeling of hallucinatory despair, as when we feel imprisoned in our own body or by the people that surround us.
