Forgot about this for a second, whoops
Idk a lot abt war or history btw, don't come for me I'm not a history buff and its pretty long so bear with me /lh
anyways, like, it's set in the 1970's or something, maybe even in the 1960's or 1980's, somewhere around that time period, war setting
TW FOR INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA, MENTIONS OF TORTURE, OTHER TYPICAL WAR STUFF.
Dream and Wilbur are soldiers on opposing sides and both are respected in their troops for entirely different reasons (Wilbur, because he is naturally charismatic and likable) (Dream because he is a strong, stoic and picture perfect soldier that most would point to as a prime example for what others should be.) While Wilbur is 19, drafted into war, Dream is 21 and has a legacy to follow, his father being a general/admirable. He might share this with Wilbur when they're talking about why they joined over dinner, why they're both fighting in the war and things like that.
At a point they get separated from their platoon in the midst of a petty skirmish. Wilbur is severely injured, and while Dream is pretty banged up himself he isn't in critical condition. Dream, with the idea of keeping wilbur as a prisoner of war and interrogating him, scrambles to keep him alive before tending to his own wounds, They spend a ton of time together because, y'known Dream is kinda dragging Wilbur along until they reach a checkpoint where they can properly get help. They break the ice when Wilbur accidentally lets it slip that he has a younger brother at home waiting for him, Dream lets himself be vulnerable for a second and says how he has a younger sister at home too. It goes from there but they're still pretty skittish around each other for obvious reasons.
Wilbur is out of his mind the entire time because he lost half of his blood and Dream is trying to keep both of them alive. They mainly take rest stops because Dream realizes that Wilbur needs it if he doesn't want him to die on the trip. They sleep in the mud, dirt, grass, wherever they land, and Dream wakes up every 30 minutes or so to make sure Wilbur doesn't run off, but that man is genuinely so OUT of it. At a point because Wilbur is extremely cold, he rolls over to cuddle up with Dream [nearest heat source]. And Dream keeps pushing him away and calls Wilbur a fairy and all of the classic homophobic shit but Wilbur is dead set on clinging to this man. Normally they have like, a solid 4 feet of space between them (maybe a bit more) and Wilbur still manages to end up by Dream's side.
So yeah, Wilbur is a bit touch starved and delirious, so he often forces Dream to hold hands with him when they stop to rest for the night while mumbling nonsense. Wilbur would have short moments of clarity where he'd be more aware of his situation and stuff, one night he's not super delirious at the time and struggles between going in to cuddle this rando like he usually did for the last couple of nights and sleeping alone. When Wilbur is finally in a decent shape, he has the most visceral reaction known to man remembering his past actions but it's primarily because he's flustered and embarrassed. Now that he's aware of what he's been doing, he eventually settles for cuddles cause he's touch starved and cold and also not like Dream would know that he's aware of what he's doing so no harm done.
Dream overtimes develops feelings because most people just see him as a scary man or higher up so he doesn't get many friendly interactions. He's been in the army for a while, so Wilbur probably doesn't treat him like most people do in the recent years and more like a normal person. Or as normal as you can get in this situation. After a couple of weeks, Dream manages to find a checkpoint and gets proper help for the both of them.
Unfortunately, the on Dream's side would push him to like torture Wilbur to get information out if him even when Dream long diverged from that plan. Most of them are too pussy to do it themselves so they assign Dream to do it because he's a strong, stoic and one-track mind kinda guy. Dream thinks about it and his idea is to go through like, at *least* 5 torture sessions before helping Wilbur escape, just so the rest of his troop doesnt find it suspicious how Wilbur just randomly disappeared after they send the most skilled guy to beat the shit outta him. During one of the torture sessions some people come to watch Dream work and start egging him on to get rougher and rougher.
Usually when he's alone with Wilbur he'd go light on him, tell him to over exaggerate his reactions a little bit but this time he's forced to inflict actual brutal pain on him. Afterwards when it's over and they leave Dream to deal with the aftermath, he's begging for wilburs forgiveness and hugging him, trying to help him while not doing too much so it doesn't raise any red flags. He mainly just gives him meds to numb the pain and cleans the blood off of him. Wilbur is back to his delirious state from when Dream first found him for the next few hours, maybe even near a day or two to fully get his mind right but still understands that this was something Dream had to do so that his loyalty isn't questioned.
While they're planning his escape and then Wilbur just stops Dream for a second, reaches out to hold his hands and starts murmuring about how he doesn't want to leave him behind and it'd be better if they go together, that Wilbur could get him a uniform or they could run away from the battlefield entirely and just visit home. Dream is a bit surprised at Wilbur's suggestion, but composes himself and then says how he can't just leave everything behind, that his troops depend on him, and how even if he joined Wilbur's side they wouldn't exactly welcome him all that much because he has killed plenty of their men. The main reason, really is because at a point he came to accept he has some feelings for Wilbur, and doesn't want them to get worse by spending more time with him. He doesn't say this for obvious reasons. Wilbur just looks at him with slightly teary eyes and just nods before going for a hug then focusing back on staging the escape like the conversation never happened. Dream tenses up at first when Wilbur hugs him but can't hug back in time before he pulls away, Wilbur thinks he didn't reciprocate because his suggestion went too far and they weren't as close as he thought they were. Their conversation is more strained after this and the tension gets thicker, but not in a sexy way. (<< miscommunication trope but it actually makes sense and cant be simply solved by talking about it).
Wilbur will still end up asking for one of Dream's dog tags, wearing it and his own dog tags to just keep the memory with him. And just as wilbur is about to make his escape, Dream confesses that he likes wilbur a bit too much more than he should (not directly saying he likes wilbur romantically but is surely hinting at it) and just as wilbur is about to respond, they hear some shuffling and footsteps so Dream urges Wilbur to go and run (also shutting down possible rejection or a negative reaction, keeping his ego and emotions intact even if he doesn't get a response).
After he ran away he couldn't stop thinking about what Dream said to him so he ended up writing the exact words in his journal that he used to document what he's going through and stuff. At first he'd be conflicted but after all that time I feel like he's very casual about it but still smiles at the memory of it. But! They get reunited cause Wilbur wrote a book about his experience in the front lines and he obviously changed the names of people involved but Dream reads this and gets deja vu almost instantly. Wilbur would dedicate a lot of the pages to his and Dream's relationship during it because he was left behind wounded and delirious. If not for Dream (even if his intentions weren't pure) he'd be dead.
He goes on to describe the humanity they faced when talking with each other. How for the first time in months has he felt like an actual person. And then that chapter would end with recollecting the confession before being ushered to run. The rest of the book would talk about the rest of the war and his return home, not mentioning Dream again until the very last pages of the book. Best part is Wilbur doesn't even comment on the confession! He describes it without any actual input, just raw words and descriptions but to be fair you can probably pick up the vibe of how he felt about it just from looking at how he talked about it, what words he used and how long he spent on it.
There are more, smaller details but this is the basics of the idea :-)
