“some people see a new fantasy netflix show and say, “omg slay, best book to screen adaption ever!” they clap their hands, turn over their money for exclusive cast photos and ugly merch, and forget about it ten minutes later. other people want to know why they squeezed seven complex and elaborate books into a fast paced show of only six episodes per season, merging the different detailed and well written plots and fleshed out characters until it was a shallow grishaverse fever dream. they finish watching, log into their twitters, and read posts about how even though it was rushed and kind of bad, ben barnes was there and I mean, who couldn’t love something with that guy in it. It takes them a good night’s sleep and a binge watch of funny and totally not manipulative cast interviews to settle on the opinion that the actors are all just such incredible people who are definitely not to blame even a little bit, and that it’s solely the writers and netflix’s reputation of cancelling small indie shows that was the issue.

and then there are the ones who aren’t manipulated by group polaroids and other cheap fan service, those who watch tumblr gif after tumblr gif of dark grimy filtered scenes depicting a misogynistic kaz and a biphobic jesper and wonder how everyone else got duped into liking this, looking desperately for something, anything enjoyable about this adaption among gloomy monotone voices and inaccurate world building that made everyone so infatuated until they realise that the majority of teenaged/young adult tiktok grishaverse fans don’t give a fuck about inej’s rape and sexual trauma, don’t care whether nina was thin or kaz was played by an ignorant 30 year old able bodied man.

so they’re the kind who won’t rest until they’ve tried to talk reason into the fans and to get them to stop supporting something this harmful, they’re the kind who write articles or posts carefully detailing exactly how the six of crows characters were butchered and mocked, they’re the kind who grouped together as book only fans to share good content and at least keep something sacred, a biblically accurate world for themselves. we’re that kind.”
