Fic Update?

So, the current situation re: Silkverse and also Sixverse is this --

A Measure of Steel (The ABoS sequel): currently at 25k, chapters 1 & 2 are complete, chapter 3 is missing (1) or (1.5) scenes. I'll start updating this again when there's (5) completed chapters just so we can get a month or so of updates before I go "omg there are no more completed chapters, shockedpikachu.jpeg."

brighter burning stars (The all this scarcity promotes sequel): currently at 31.6k, chapters 1&2 are complete, chapter 3 is at I think 3-4 scenes from completion. This fic only has 6 chapters so I want to finish all of them before I start uploading it onto the internet HOWEVER, there is also another problem here, and that is that The Touka POV Fic (Stars) and the Tajima POV fic (weigh your shadow) cover some very similar timelines so I was thinking of posting them with like (1) chapter a week alternating, so that the timeline makes sense, but that uh, well, Tajima POV is at 6k/60k and NO completed chapters so it's not doing so hot.

The current situation with Warverse (Age Swapped Nies) is this:

Next chapter imminent, sometime this week or next week I only have 3-4 more scenes to get done for this chapter. UNFORTUNATELY this fic seems to have grown more chapters so I might need to do some pruning lmao.

If you need to take your work down, ever, or even if you just kinda feel like you might like to, go right ahead and do it. By the power vested in me as an absolute asshole that is extremely committed to the bit, I hereby grant you immunity from any and all dipshit guilt trips about how you're pulling fandom apart at the seams or whatever because you'd like to retire something that's past its expiration date.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to restore privacy to things you once wanted to share. There's nothing wrong with wanting to grow beyond your old stuff, and you absolutely do not have to save the old stuff or leave it up to prove to anybody how far you've come. There's nothing wrong with not particularly caring if you're ~growing~ through fanworks or not: maybe you're just tired and you'd like to box up your hobby and put it away for a while. There's nothing wrong with taking things down for your own safety. (I mean, yeah, it's wrong that anyone put you in a position where you'd need to, but doing what you have to do to stay safe? fine. good, even.) And so help me god, if you have to pull-to-pub, more power to you, get that money, and fuck the vicious little haters that could only dream of being good enough to get there.

None of these things are even mildly inappropriate, and they for goddamn sure don't mean you're mentally ill. (Because yeah, that's an actual frozen solid take I've seen with my own two eyeballs more than one time.)

Things go viral and people repost shit without permission, so some things are harder to really remove than others, but nobody ever has any kind of moral right to access things you made for free to share for fun. Remember that. You hurt absolutely no one by taking things down, especially not yourself, and anyone claiming otherwise doesn't deserve your time, your worry, or access to you work.

I know the answer is probably obvious but I still feel like asking, What changed on ff.net to make you and other writers I've followed for a while delete all of their works off of there? I know it's not well supported, but has something changed recently that just flew over my head?

I mean, I think the answer varies, but I also think that as writers age, we get kind of tired of the bullshit nature of the platform. For a long while now, ffnet hasn't been maintained or really moderated. There's not been a lot of open communication with users, the advertisements have gotten out of control, and to be quite frank, other places like ao3 are rolling out muting and blocking features and allowing authors to have more control over their works.

For me personally, this has been a long time coming, given that I'd already moved to only posting new writing on ao3, but if you look at the comment section for say, Bloodless on ffnet, you can see that there's been a lot of comments that are straight up just like "your mc is stupid" "why doesn't this story make sense" etc etc and I got tired of seeing this while also trying to reread like, actual nice reviews. It might seem small, but it's something that really piles up over time. If you want to look through them, be my guest, but imagine getting a new email for every one of those spread across all of my works on there, and how quickly it starts to get upsetting if I read each of them as they come. Not to mention, for a very long time, I've wanted to reedit Bloodless and a lot of my older works to my current grammatical standards, and moving it to ao3 had been part of that project. I would've deleted it off of ffnet when I finished moving regardless because I simply wasn't comfortable with the platform anymore and any time I got emails from there I felt a vague sense of "oh no" that's been getting worse as time goes on. As for what caused me to take action specifically, yesterday I got a comment on the ao3 version of Bloodless that was just:

I'd already not wanted to be associated with my ffnet account anymore, and I guess that blatant "go here to get the actual full work" kind of pushed me over the edge. I just didn't want to get emails from there anymore and the idea of getting more emails from there was just no. So now it's deleted is all. I'll get around to editing it and reposting when I can shake off the bad vibes.

ahh no need to midnight sun it, i def didn’t mean for you to rewrite the whole thing!! maybe just some key moments where izuna develops and shifts his perception of her and their relationship ☺️ like first meeting, first midnight prison escape, new set of clothes, his nobility reveal, etc etc. in the early chapters, he’s almost always lurking about but we don’t often get to see what he thinks of the her world (purposefully ofc!) that is so different from his, but im so curious! and the thread was a twitter post appreciating amazing, brain chemical changing fics that other people added their favs to, not necessarily a single rec thread! unfortunately the op deleted it or else i would still be trawling for more reading material!

Ah I see! There are a few scenes in there that I'd be interested in writing! I'll see where the muse takes me.

i read a bolt of silk after it was recommended on a twitter thread about fics so beautifully written that they permanently change your brain chemistry and WOW yes absolutely holy shit!!!!! hisa and her quiet strength and your beautifully complex side characters will stay with me for ages. do you have any plans to write more about hisa and izuna getting to know each other from izuna’s pov? i’m a sucker for pining and the slow realization of Feelings and we didn’t get enough of that from hisa’s side (my queen of self denial) until it was almost too late. also i would like to join izuna in fangirling over her ❤️

I'm so glad you liked Hisa and Izuna's adventures! I've been working on the sequel, (currently I've finished 2-3 chapters and am working on 4+5 so that I can start posting it eventually. Maybe next February!)

I might write a few outtakes about Izuna and his viewpoint at some point, but I didn't have plans to write the whole fic again from his perspective (mostly bc it would just be him lying down thinking "oh no, I'm in love with my hot employer but she HATES noblemen and doesn't love me back. Tragic. [plays sad music on his zither.]) If you have any particular scenes you'd really want to see from his perspective do let me know tho!

(also SUPER curious about that twitter thread. If you see it again somewhere I would LOVE to see it.)

feels weird becoming more and more proship whilst like .. literally all of my friends are hardcore antis (also weird using the word hardcore? i just mean they're very intense about it and defo not gonna change). i hate hiding stuff from them but i also know they would hate me forever if i told them :/

i think i might make another blog, probably for my self ship stuff cus i feel embarrassed having it on main but also cus i'd like to be able to have opinions w/o being like "is this too far? are they gonna ping me on discord like 'explain yourself, this is fucked up' and what would i even say? 'oh yeah no i just have opinions you consider morally reprehensible. nothing to worry about lol'" and i know they probably won't even see the one vaguely proship post i rb out of however many i rb in a day but it's still nerve-wracking. a bunch of people in a discord server im in are like. they get really vitriolic & violent and kinda scary whenever proshippers come up, i think someone there actually got. i think suspended from instagram? cus they were being so violent towards proshippers and it's just. insane to me that anyone could be okay with saying that sort of stuff especially about another actual person?? idk.

Fic Updates (Silkverse and Sixverse)

So, currently we’re at halfway through chapter 3 for Steel being completed, with a good idea of major future plotlines. That said, chapters 4 and 5 are being uncooperative! Unclear what the timeline is here bc updates start after 4 and 5 are finished, but still poking at them for the most part. So far, the expectation is that Steel will be roughly 250k-300k words since there are a *lot* of plotlines to set up and wrap up, but I suppose it could go longer?! the idea of that is terrifying so I’m hoping it all wraps up in about 300k or under haha. So the thought is roughly 30 chapters, ten per act. 

For Sixverse Touka’s pov has about 26k-27k/60ish thousand words written, so it’s nearly halfway done! (It’ll only start posting when it’s done.) The complication is that the Tajima POV covers a lot of the same timeline and it’s only 4k/60k done. I’ve been thinking about alternating posting chapters for them, so I have to keep looking at it and see if that’s a reasonable expectation for finishing sometime before the end of the year. 

just spent the last 3 days rereading the entirety of bloodless on ff.net since i discovered it a couple years ago and once again i am. utterly obsessed with your characterization and worldbuilding. literally everything about bloodless + ashen is just. *chef’s kiss*

(trying to figure out what’s up with inuzuka kaito is driving me insane, alas 😔)

I am DELIGHTED that you think so! I admittedly haven’t spent as much time writing/thinking about Bloodless recently (the planning is all there, I’m just in the middle of editing it for clarity while porting it over to ao3 rn), but hearing this delights me! Thank you so much for dropping me a line to tell me about it!
