But he can’t do it alone.
With Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors by his side, Sokka is headed to Ba Sing Se to find Katara and Aang so they can go rescue his fire bender.
Things aren’t as easy as he had hoped. Corruption, lies, and unknown horrors await them inside the city’s walls. None of this is helping Sokka’s mental well-being.
Hakoda and his men face a problem of their own as Azula approaches with the intentions of making it rain fire.
Sokka and Zuko will both find themselves having to reintegrate back into a life they thought they left behind, with people they hardly remember. It isn’t easy for anyone, especially when they don’t recognize the person standing in front of them.

For the prompt ask thing: 12/9/36
I love your writing! And wish you all the strength you need!
Babysitter!au + strangers to lovers + “i let you mooch off of my netflix and this is how you repay me?” (background zukka)
this just turned into a zuko + izumi fic whoops
Zuko had never really needed a babysitter before. His job at the theater and his lack of social life meant that he and his daughter were often attached at the hip, unless she was at school or a friend's house.
So, when Mai had arrived in town, and invited him out for dinner to catch up, Zuko had been nervous about contacting a babysitter, and Izumi had been adamant that she wouldn’t need one.
She quickly changed her mind though, because it turned out she was a sucker for Spiderman and her babysitter Sokka was her new best friend for introducing her to it.
She was also, apparently, a natural performer, and over the course of a few more nights and afternoons of babysitting (per his daughters nagging) she'd practically memorised every Spiderman movie available on netflix.
-
“Y’know if you’re gonna steal cars, you shouldn’t dress like a car thief.”
Zuko snorted and readjusted the bag in his arms, trying to get them to stop cutting off the circulation in his hand. “Stop quoting Spiderman at me and open the door please.”
Izumi sighed, sounding incredibly put-upon for someone who’d managed to pout her way into getting ice cream, and pulled on the handle so Zuko could shove the groceries into the back seat.
-
“My weakness is small knives. Anything but knives!” Izumi declared, dropping to her knees and shielding her face, knocking her spiderman beanie off her head in the process. Zuko was honestly a little impressed with her performance, even if it did result in him picking silly string out of his sandwich after she shot him with it.
-
The final straw was watching his 13 year old re-enact the douchey dance from Spiderman 2, swaggering around their living room and shooting finger guns at random objects.
Shaking with laughter, Zuko followed her with the camera on his phone from where he was curled up on the couch, having to bury his face into his knee when she started rolling her wrists in time with her hips.
The video was shaky and a little off center at times but still easily recognisable as his daughter being ridiculous, and he tapped on the now familiar contact without a second thought.
Me
[video]
I let u mooch off my netflix and this is how u repay me???
she’s been quoting spiderman all week!
Sokka (babysitter)
would you rather i pay you back with dinner? /r
Zuko paused, staring at his screen in surprise for long enough that Izumi abandoned her dancing and jumped up onto the couch beside him, squeezing her way under his arm so she could see his screen.
With a loud and dramatic gasp (Zuko was almost tempted to offer her a job) she started bouncing up and down, jostling Zuko enough that he almost dropped his phone.
“Yesyesyesyes!! Dad you have to say yes- wait gimme your phone you won’t do it right-”
Zuko shoved himself off of the couch, escaping her grabby hands and then holding her back with a foot against her chest so she was pinned to the back of the couch, pouting.
“I can say yes to a date on my own thanks, meddler.” He muttered, typing out an affirmative as excitement bubbled in his chest. Izumi poked her tongue out and struggled against his foot some more before finally just pinching the skin under his ankle so he yelped and hopped back.
Izumi scampered off somewhere, probably to the kitchen to steal his fancy chili chocolate, while he rubbed at his ankle and smiled at his phone, Sokka's following text offering a date and a place.
- a few days later -
Zuko gingerly shut the door behind him, every sound feeling amplified in the darkness. He was home later than he'd intended, and was grateful to Sokka's friend Aang for making sure the house was locked up and secure when he'd left a few minutes ago.
When he hit the living room, he was suddenly blinded by the lights turning on, finding Izumi sitting in an armchair facing the front door.
"You're home late."
She was wearing one of his shirts, the logo so faded neither of them knew what it was originally, and a pair of fluffy spiderman-themed pyjama's. Her hair was falling out of it's braid, pressed flat under the frames of her glasses.
Somehow, despite being both the adult and the parent, Zuko felt like he'd broken a rule.
"You're up late." He retorted, raising his eyebrow. She looked to the side shiftily, like she'd suddenly realised her mistake before raising her chin defiantly.
"Did you have fun? Was he nice? Do I need to shoot him with my nerf gun?"
"Since when did you have a nerf gun?"
"Forget I said anything about a nerf gun. Was it nice?"
Zuko stared at her, feeling ridiculously fond and still running on the high of being kissed on his doorstep like a teenager.
"Yes, it was nice." He finally admitted, telling her about how Sokka had picked him up and opened his door for him and pulled out his chair like a gentleman. She laughed when he told her about he and Sokka arm wrestling over who got to pay, following to his room while he changed into his pyjamas.
She climbed into his bed with him, snuggling up to his side and asking more questions about their date until she finally interrupted herself with a yawn and fell asleep, mumbling something about a spiderman marathon.

can you um make a zukka one shot about them fake/soft arguing over if Gatorade or Powerade better? maybe some kissing at the end 👉👈.
i feel like theres a right answer as to which drink is better but i have literally never had a powerade and the last time i had a gatorade was when i played soccer in 6th grade so i dont remember what it tastes like. i feel the strong urge to taste test them both now so thank you. ANYWHOOOO heres ur fic my friend <333
~~~
“Do you want anything from the vending machine?”
No response.
Zuko looked up at Sokka and saw him staring intently at his chemical engineering textbook.
"Helloooo, Earth to Sokka," Zuko said, trying to get his boyfriend's attention again.
Still Sokka didn't look up. He got like this sometimes when he was studying, so focused on whatever equations he had to memorize and what compounds made which chemicals and whole bunch of other sciencey nonsense that Zuko didn't bother trying to understand.
Some of their friends hated studying with Sokka because most of them only studied together to fuck around and goof off, but Sokka always tuned everyone out. Zuko, however, found it endearing. He liked the way his brows furrowed together with intense focus. He admired the way Sokka took his major so seriously, and he constantly amazed Zuko with just how intelligent he was.
But Zuko had been sitting here outlining his own political science essay for three hours.
And he was thirsty.
And judging by the way Sokka had barely moved from his seat in those past three hours, Zuko thought it was safe to assume that he was thirsty too.
"I'll pay for whatever you want, babe," Zuko tried again. As a broke college student, that was a generous offer.
Still, no dice.
Zuko sighed, it was time to pull out the big guns.
"Alright, since you're too busy studying to respond to me, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you want me to buy you a blue powerade."
Blue eyes snapped up and glared at him.
"You wouldn't fucking dare."
"There he is," Zuko laughed.
"I'm serious Zuko, you better not get me that sorry excuse for a drink," Sokka said as he jabbed the end of his pencil in Zuko's direction.
This was a song and dance that the two of them had been in many times before. It all started back in high school when they were still just best friends. Sokka would bring a gigantic blue gatorade with him to every hockey practice and every game. He claimed they were good luck and helped him play better, but Zuko always thought it was just a dumb superstition. During one of their games as Zuko was coming off the ice, Sokka asked him to grab a blue gatorade from the vending machine. The machine was all out, but they did have blue powerade, and being to good friend that he was Zuko thought that it would be an acceptable alternative.
And boy was he wrong.
The second Zuko tossed the blue drink to Sokka on the benches, his expression shifted from something akin to confusion, then to horror, and finally he stared at Zuko as if he had just kicked his pet puppy down a flight of stairs.
"What the fuck is this Zuko?" Sokka said in a hushed tone, lips curled in disgust.
"They were out of blue gatorade so I got that instead, what's the big deal?" Zuko had shrugged.
"What's the big deal? What's the big DEAL?? Zuko, the big deal is that powerade is a monstrosity created by all things evil in order to ruin my life! That's the big deal Zuko," He exclaimed as his arm gestures became more and more frantic.
Zuko stared at him like he was crazy, "...it's just powerade, Sokka."
Sokka glared at Zuko, "Oh no, my friends, this is not just powerade. This is my nemesis. I would rather drink yellow gatorade than this crap."
And that was saying something, considering Zuko had already made the mistake of getting yellow gatorade for Sokka before. The fact that he hated powerade more than yellow gatorade was truly saying something.
Seeing how disgusted Sokka was by the powerade was something Zuko was sure to remember about his best friend for future reference.
And by future reference, Zuko was referring to torturing Sokka about it at any chance he could get.
Zuko stood up and looked back at his unamused boyfriend with a faux-innocent expression, "But I thought you loved powerade?"
Sokka rolled his eyes, "Haha, Zuko, you already know how much I hate that shit. But fine, if you're going to the vending machine can you please get me a blue gatorade please? Emphasis on gatorade."
"Blue powerade? you got it babe," Zuko said as he pressed a kiss to Sokka's temple before darting out of the library. He could hear his protests as he ran out the door, but when he returned with the supposedly magical blue gatorade all was forgiven. (And if you must know Sokka did ambush him with kisses once he saw his beloved Zuko with his beloved blue gatorade.)
MORE ZUKKA HEADCANONS
This is gonna be a shot gun list
SWT = southern water tribe
Zuko and Sokka both have a secret crush on eachother and toph is the only person who knows, she can sense how they’re feeling whe they’re around eachother
Sokka likes wearing makeup bc of the kiyoshi warriors and his own tribal makeup. It’s a secret hobby of his
Zuko actually has two sides of himself when he’s around sokka and his friends and when he’s “ Fire Lord Zuko” he become the perfect cool calm and collected cool person. Very well mannered and has the eyes of everyone in the room on him at all times. He really captures an audience with his words. Sokka loves when zukko takes command of a room
If sokka and Zuko WERE to marry, Zuko would have a traditional Southern-Water tribe wedding. I see Zuko wanting to take part in Sokkas culture and identity. Zuko wants to earn his place in the tribe. Also it would be great for the FIRE LORD to have a TRADITIONAL WATER TRIBE WEDDING. Like that would be HUGE and show that Zuko the fire lord appreciates and respects all cultures. Also creating great relations between the two nations
I can’t see sokka leaving and permanently staying in the fire nation. Like he’s the chief of the water tribe. In his youth he was part of the royal guard in the fire nation and was an ambassador of the SWT. But as a full grown adult he takes on the chieftan mantle. If sokka and Zuko marry at this point I see them either living in new republic city, OR living in the fire nation and SWT seasonally. So they go back and forth every other season. This is so Zuko can be intermingled into the tribe and constantly be close with them.
Zuko and Sokka take pleasure in eachothers company when Sokka is part of the Royal Guard. When Zuko isn’t being fire lord and sokka being ambassador, they spend their time in the garden sparing, talking, having lunch etc... or they’ll hang out in zukos room just so they don’t have to around dotting servants or body guards.
Hakkoda knows his son has a crush on zukko, that’s why he supports sokkas decision on being in the royal guard.
Iroh also knows zuko has a crush on sokka but Zuko won’t admit it.
Zuko pushes for pro LGBTQ+ laws, he’s studying how other nations rules and laws. Realizing the fire nation had no pro laws on LGBTQ+ he wants to be a progressive nation.
Mai and Zuko are actually close friends! He confides in her about his feelings for Sokka when he just can’t handle it. Like “GOD HE WAS SO HOT TODAY I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE” or something like that. Mai is a really good listener and they have become closer as friends
I don’t think things will truly start developing in the secret crush dept. until after sokka is enrolled in the royal guard and starts living in the palace.
Sokka is apart of the royal guard bc the fire nation currently is in a Pro Ozai vs. Pro Zuko tug of war. So Zuko asked him to stay and be apart of the guard bc he trusts him with his life. ( and he enjoys being around sokka)
Sokka wont allow himself to think about his feelings for zuko, like zuko has as well. They both are involved politically and have a goal to repair their nations. They’re so driven by fixing everything they pushed aside their feelings. Then it becomes a slow burn with moments building on top of eachother. But they’re both torn between the duties the have to their nation and their own personal happiness.
My asks and inbox are open!!! If you have any questions or wanna talk about Zukka let me know 💕💕💕
