Compared to other cards, I had 0 hesitation on this one. I mean it HAD TO BE our favorite couple of the Continent. And at first I was like ‘Oh great, let’s give those babies some light, cute stuff and a fluff scene, they deserve it’ and then BAM one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the books appeared in my mind and I knew I just had to draw this (if you know, you know. Riv’s pogroms chapter broke my heart). And the apple tree blossoms petals detail is a direct reference to the sort of Heaven they go to after their death, referred to as the ‘place where the apple trees always bloom’. Not gonna lie, I broke my own heart a little.

As one of my favorite characters of the whole series, I couldn’t not draw Regis in this tarot. The Hermit card, representing wisdom, giving guidance but also solitude, couldn’t match him more. I truly cried when we got to see him again in ‘Blood and Wine’. 

At first I wanted to give him a more vagabond look, something with a hood maybe. But then I settled on drawing his game’s outfit. Drawing his profile might be my new favorite thing now. I also added some mandragoras, because if you know, you know.

I’m not gonna lie, Cahir’s character broke my heart through the whole series. At first, like everyone else, I thought he was a regular prick (like, you know, there’s always worse in those books), and then, THEN, my boy went through his redemption arc like it was the Olympics?? Bro who gave you the right to be this good? Even if his end is kind of bittersweet, with his ultimate redemption of saving Ciri while we knew he was going to die, I deeply admire the writing of Cahir. The very slight inspiration from the models of fallen angels in art history is fitting for his tragic, betrayed and redemptive character.

This card was a bit tricky, because at first I didn’t know who to draw on it. It has a strong meaning related to destiny, fate, karma, changes (even unwelcomed ones) and turning points ; so Ciri was a good choice. But I wasn’t entirely convinced yet. And then I remembered the chapter when her whole lineage is unfolded by the Lodge of Sorceresses. And I thought that she is indeed the Child of Destiny, but even more than that a lot of her female ancestors played a major role in her fate, that she is partly a product of that. More than everything else, Ciri is also the one who breaks this cursed lineage – quite literally the wheel of the Lara Dorren cursed descendance.

I could have put Falka along with Lara Dorren, Calanthe and Pavetta, but I decided against it as I was first tempted to draw her on another card.

First piece of my new project of making a Witcher-inspired major arcanas

I’ve decided to draw everyone’s favourite bard as The Fool for the first card. This card is considered the protagonist of sorts of the major arcana; so at first I thought I’d draw Ciri, but thinking about it, the keywords generally associated with it matched Jaskier more. Plus, Jaskier is writing down his memoirs and Geralt’s adventures in the books, and even in The Witcher 3, he’s the narrator, so it just made sense.  For Jaskier’s design, I think I restarted the sketch like 6 times. I wanted to do a mix between the canon description in the books and the third game’s design. A blend of his long hair in the books, but I kinda liked him as a brunette. I wanted to give him a really pretty and sophisticated minstrel look, inspired by his outfit in TW3. I added some traditional Polish embroidery patterns on his sleeves and dandelion patterns on the background, as a reminder of his artist name in the books.
