*Your Best American Girl by Mitski starts playing*
Lighting and colors are all over the place but who cares, I wanted to draw some Dorsia Boyfriends angst
Inspired by (or rather totally ripped off) that scene in Brokeback Mountain:

I think those songs are very suegiku and here's why analysis:
"Once more to see you" by Mitski
"So come inside and be with me, alone with me, Alone, with me alone" - they both wanting that but never saying it out loud. Tecchou bc he doesn't know if Jouno would even want to stay and always giving him time and space (he's so sweet) and Jouno bc he's emotionally repressed and oblivious and thinks he's unlovable and it just can't go through his mouth
"If you would let me give you pinky promise kisses" - TECCHOU bc Jouno wouldn't let him bc he knows he's not gonna make it and doesn't want to make it even harder for Tecchou to let go of him
"Then I wouldn't have to scream your name Atop of every roof in the city of my heart" - BOTH, Tecchou bc Jouno is gone and he didn't tell him how important he was to him and he's thinking that maybe if he did Jouno wouldn't go alone and Jouno bc he wants them to be a thing so BAD but he doesn't want Tecchou to get attached when he knows he's not gonna make it out of the airport and he's scared of being vulnerable and close with another human being
"If I could see you, Once more to see you" - both. Jouno in his dying moments, and Tecchou after losing him
"Your best american girl" by Mitski
"If I could, I'd be your little spoon And kiss your fingers forevermore But, big spoon, you have so much to do And I have nothing ahead of me" - Jouno just wishing they had normal life with eachother but he knows that Tecchou has his role to play, that he has justice to pursue and Jouno is aware of his future AND past which was everything Tecchou is fighting against
"You're the sun, you've never seen the night But you hear its song from the morning birds Well, I'm not the moon, I'm not even a star But awake at night I'll be singing to the birds" - once again Jouno, seeing Tecchou as a light in his life and himself as darkness, something bringing Tecchou down, holding him back from pursuing justice
"Don't wait for me, I can't come" - do i need to even say anything
"You're the one You're all I ever wanted I think I'll regret this" - Jouno just before his fight with Fukuchi, thinking it's the last time seeing Tecchou (it's not pls suegiku reunion when)
"Pink in the night" by Mitski
"I glow pink in the night in my room I've been blossoming alone over you" - Jouno being so in love with Tecchou in secret coming back home and thinking about him
"And I hear my heart breaking tonight I hear my heart breaking tonight Do you hear it too? It's like a summer shower With every drop of rain singing "I love you, I love you, I love you I love you, I love you, I love you I love you, I love you, I love you" - i think it's Jouno when he realised/accepted his feelings for Tecchou, bc i feel like he would be heartbroken even before anything happened, feeling it's doomed from the start but he can't help it and it's just going on and on in his head
"I could stare at your back all day I could stare at your back all day" - Jouno just liking Tecchou presence, his voice, heartbeat, breathing which is familiar and calming for him
"And I know I've kissed you before, but I didn't do it right Can I try again, try again, try again Try again, and again, and again And again, and again, and again" - Jouno just wanting to kiss him but not in the heat of the moment or sth and pretending it never happened right after (bc you can't tell me they didn't kiss at least once and didn't act like nothing happened after that)
Feel free to share your thoughts on this (pls do). It's mostly Jouno right here but yeah

october media recap ✩°。 ⋆⸜ 🎧✮
i love music, movies, tv, podcasts, games, books, and more. here's a recap of things i watched in october 2023!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
music ♫⋆。♪ ₊˚
i've been really into more indie blues type music as autumn comes to a head, my playlist autumn girls this is for you has a bit more songs that i really associate with this season. anyway heres the list!
mitski - my love mine all mine
mitski - i'm your man
these two songs are phenomenal, as is mitski's album "the land is inhospitable and so are we" i actually wrote a brief analysis on my love mine all mine as a love song and breakup song. the feeling it invokes in me is second to none, what a beautiful song.
olivia rodrigo - lacy
sixpence none the richer - kiss me
jane remover - search party
searows - used to be friends
phoebe briders - moon song
iron & wine - flightless bird, american mouth
mazzy star - fade into you
sting - shape of my heart
yeule - software update
yeule - sulky baby
taylor swift - "slut!"
rachel chinouriri - maybe i'm lonely
emile mosseri - jacob and the stone
i actually listen to this song to fall asleep, but i can assure you that i also cry every time i watch those videos on the internet with this song playing in the background. it perfectly encapsulates a feeling of hope and loss. beautifully done. minari was a phenomenal as a (real) movie lover, i love when movies have tracks like this that so clearly stand out from the soundtrack and score.
movies 🎞️✮⋆˙
i haven't watched as many movies as i'd have liked in october, it has been an emotional month to say the least. but, now im on anti-depressants so our regularly scheduled slaying is back. movies will be rated a 1-5 star based on how much i enjoyed it! and NO NOT EVERY MOVIE IS FROM THIS YEAR OR EVEN THIS DECADE <3
talk to me (2022) ★★★★
pearl (2022) ★★★★
the invisible man (2020) ★★★★
child's play (1988) ★★★★
doctor sleep (2019) (fucking insanely good) ★★★★★
bodies bodies bodies (2022) (so camp??) ★★★
call me by your name (2017) ★★★★
silence of the lambs (1991) (this is a perfectly made film. argue with the wall!) ★★★★★
and thats about it, i genuinely have been too busy with school to watch as many films, still have not seen barbie or the fnaf movie because im so busy and too broke to go to the movies constantly LOL. however, i will say what my favorite youtube video topics are currently in my honorable mentions section!!
honorable mentions ˙˖°📷 ༘ ⋆。˚
my current fave youtubers or streamers :3
dead meat (james and chelsea constantly demonstrate a genuine love for horror and have recently been branching out to video games amidst the SAG strike! love them and their work so much, they have definitely made me into more of a horror movie buff)
wendigoon (i will listen to this man talk about anything, but he constantly raises the bar with how informed he is on topics. he just likes to talk abt weird shit and thats really neat idk)
supertf (ive been watching this guy for over 5 years he is still the funniest ow streamer out there sorry)
kyedae (she is rlly funny and even though valorant is boring to watch i watch her play mostly, however i LOVE when she does variety or horror its so funny how scared she gets)
jacksepticeye (watching him play spiderman 2 bc i don't own a ps5, BUT ALSO sean just has the best playthroughs of games like this. love his takes on the game!!)
mike's mic (olivia wilde nodding gif like if you get it you get it!)
games im playing right now :3
the sims 4 (do i need to explain this rlly... i have 2000 hours on sims... currently building a tiny town for the new expansion pack :3 pics here)
sun haven (started playing with my bf, feels like stardew valley with a bigger world and more things to do! i HATE the fishing mechanic. it is not for me babes)
valorant (playing occasionally as i am not very good, but i have alot of skins so yipee)
overwatch (i have 1600 hours in the game unfortunately. addiction is real guys)
fall guys (just recently started playing with my friends again, idk why anyone wouldnt want to play this its free and fun. theres a hatsune miku skin in the game like CMON)
genshin impact (im actually really invested in fontaine's story, if i had multiple hours a day to game i would do all the story quests and things but again, im so b u s y. still farming for arataki itto, pls come home)
bloons td6 (i've somehow racked up 60 hours on this game...its so fun...i love it...)
lastly, my october hyperfixation was...
horror movies and true crime!! i watched over 100 hours of movies, video essays, podcasts, and documentaries relating to horror and true crime. i'm officially burnt out of it though, so i will be back next month to once again happily share my interests!! byeee

i love ur little rambles so what do u think the losers coffee orders and music taste is (in hey sharpshooter or otherwise) 🤲
ooooo oooo ooo yes yes yes
((TORTOISE LORE on the days i have to work onsite at my job i almost exclusively set up shop at the coffee place across from the office & listen to my little music & drink my little beverages all day so this particular set of questions resonates with me so bad))
for consistency's sake coffee-wise let's say we're talking starbucks. i think most days sirius would go for something high in caffeine but with a little sweetness to it. a venti iced shaken espresso with oat milk and three pumps of classic sweetener, perhaps. maybe switch that classic out for chestnut praline at the holidays bc he's feeling festive. other days i think he'd want an absolute sugar bomb as a reward for getting through a rough week or bc he was really mature today and refrained from screeching at people in the street when they didn't walk fast enough & blocked the sidewalk when he was in a hurry. on those days he requires a big ole mocha cookie crumble frap or an iced cinnamon dolce latte with an extra shot for fun.
on his walk home he's listening to one of three playlists depending on the day. the first one is a fourteen hour pop girlie playlist that starts with style by taylor swift and ends with kiss me more by doja cat, with some ariana, gaga, spice girls, charli, no doubt, & even some abba thrown in the middle for spice. the second playlist is for mocha cookie crumble days and starts with your best american girl by mitski and features lots of phoebe, lots of taylor, lots of lana, some ethel cain for sure, some select fleetwood mac, maybe some stuff from the 1975's a brief inquiry album. it's all stuff he can dig into & be angsty with & have strong feelings to.
the third is a more generic thought-dump kind of playlist where he just throws in songs he likes. buttercup by hippo campus. the view from the afternoon by arctic monkeys. concussion by girlhouse. ilysb by lany. like....,.,moonage daydream. 6 inch. pink pony club. bring it on home. just a mix of vibes and genres & things he gets stuck in his head.
contrary to popular belief i do think remus is a coffee girlie and would pick a mug of good dark roast drip over tea any day. i think he's simple for the most part & would go after a good tall americano on days he needs the kickstart but a grande drip with light cream would be his everyday go-to. during the summers he switches to a cold brew or plain iced coffee with cold foam if he's feeling fancy. he likes to pretend he doesn't like the frilly expensive drinks but every time he & sirius get coffee together, sirius orders him a grande mocha with two extra pumps of mocha and whipped cream on top & he downs it in about eight seconds.
remus is a hozier stan confirmed. remus is a boygenius stan confirmed. he likes poetic lyrics more than anything so sirius puts him on mitski and taylor. i like the idea that his music taste was a little outdated most of his life bc his parents had a huge record collection that they inherited from his grandparents so he just....played music all the time as a lonely little kid looking for things to do. when he was nine the only album he listened to all christmas break was otis redding's the dock of the bay & that made him gravitate toward stuff like leon bridges & amy winehouse as he got older. he learned about spotify four years after everyone else did & still only has two playlists. his parents loved the 90s rock girlies and they listened to a lot of the cranberries and fiona apple CDs around the house, so all those albums are really nostalgic for him now. he puts sirius on jeff buckley & regrets it instantly bc literally all he does now is play remus' grace vinyl full-volume and remus is afraid they're going to get a noise complaint. you can hear it in the stairwell sirius the neighbors are going to get mad please

2023 Year End List - #18
Tumblr media
18. The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We - Mitski
Main genres: Indie Folk
A decent sampling of: Slowcore, Alternative Country, Chamber Pop, Countrypolitan
Gonna admit something that could get me crucified in some spaces of the internet - Mitski is not my #1 contemporary "sad girl" in indie rock/pop, and I've never really 100% bought the hype.
She's definitely talented, and arguably the most likable, down-to-earth indie musician that has reached her level of fame. But Puberty 2 through Be The Cowboy and Laurel Hell, I've only ever found about two tracks on each of these records that I'd wanna revisit regularly (Haven't touched the fan favourite Bury Me At Makeout Creek or those first two records yet, so I could be totally missing out on her best material).
You see, "Your Best American Girl" and "Nobody" are excellent singles that have always deserved the hype they received, but then her records as a whole have generally been full of these songs that I would describe as "under-cooked" and sometimes too short for their own good.
This time around, however, I'm happy to express that I genuinely really enjoyed her latest LP The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We. Mitski's greatest qualities as a songwriter shine much brighter here than on recent past projects. Stripping everything down to intimate, slow-moving folk-country balladry plays to her greatest strengths - the way in which Mitski carries her melodies so delicately, like a broken bird when singing, and how clearly gifted she is at writing those melodies.
The display of painfully universal human emotions also permeates this record as much as any other Mitski project, but this time I feel that her songs are given more room to breathe, which allows the emotional gut punches to hit much harder.
This is most evident on the record's finest moment, a song called "Heaven" which, like all of the best Mitski tracks, is mostly about the shameless longing for the love of another human being, this time set to the tune of arcadian, countrypolitan-style string arrangements that flourish over a wistful promenade of reflections on her unbridled devotion towards a lover that is all too absent. This is the sound of her signature artistic style aging into a fine, full-bodied wine that I could very easily get drunk off of (and then, in true Mitski fashion, start sobbing uncontrollably).
There's also the thundering bittersweet triumph of "When Memories Snow", wherein Mitski expresses the desire to wipe clean all the traumas of the past, while achieving a sound that is close, familiar, and personal, yet also somehow larger than life as any 60s brill building production. That bold country orchestra is every bit as awakening to the senses as dunking your head in a bucket of ice water, and I also just need to take a minute to acknowledge the deeply satisfying chord progressions that manage to really seal the deal on making this track feel truly massive.
I also really appreciate the closer "I Love Me After You", an epilogue that gently sways and disappears into a hushed, forested midnight of bassy piano chords, low crashing cymbals, and sleepy guitar drones.
If you weren't fully sold on Mitski before in the same way that I wasn't, then this could very well be the record that gets you hooked. The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We plays to all of her strengths as an artist, and it really shows Mitski coming into her own as a seasoned musician who's capable of adapting to new sounds.
I'm still not convinced she couldn't make an even better record in the future if she continues in this direction as a songwriter. It's a bit slow to start, and the B-side heavily dominates the album, but this is her first record that I will be putting in my regular rotation, and a big highlight of the year for the Mitski diehards and longtime skeptics alike. So kudos to the millennial queen of sad girl indie.
8/10
Highlights: "Heaven", "When Memories Snow", "I Love Me After You", "My Love Mine All Mine"

CONCERT REVIEW: MXMTOON AT THE VOGUE THEATRE - MAY 13TH, 2022
Tumblr media
It is always exciting to see someone rise to stardom. It is especially exciting if they have roots in content creation and internet fandom spaces so a follower can watch them go from small, to big. mxmtoon, pronounced M-X-M-toon, is a product of the internet in all the best ways. Maia – the 22-year-old Chinese-American Youtuber, songwriter, and “ukelele-girl” – performed at The Vogue on May 13th to celebrate her rise to stardom, and the upcoming release of her album Rising.
She started strong with “Falling for U,” a jazzy, low-fi hit that had the crowd immediately swaying. One thing to note is that although mxmtoon did not have much by way of stage decoration, her presence made up for it tenfold. Coupled with strong vocals, a bubbly personality, and the cutest black-mesh puff dress, I don’t think anyone needed anything more than Maia prancing around the stage to “sad disco.”
mxmtoon’s fans are an exciting group of young people that clearly love her very much. For what could be considered a “smaller” concert, the fans made it seem like Vancouver’s biggest event of the night. There was signage (most notably a Twilight reference sign, which mxmtoon acknowledged and loved), singing along, and active banter from the audience. mxmtoon handled all of this with a warm, natural energy.
You can tell that mxmtoon performs with so much care; at one point she pulled up opener Chloe Moriondo to the stage to sing “ok on your own,” ending with a huge hug and a gracious pause for Chloe to exit the stage to a loud crowd of cheering. I found that I looked forward each time mxmtoon spoke, because she went beyond the normal “what’s up Vancouver?” and showed so much of herself to her audience. She joked about playing Valorant all day before the concert, and took selfies with the crowd. She clearly loves her fans and wants them to have an incredible, unique night.
Following a strong set of opening songs, mxmtoon prepared us for the next by introducing it as “for when Mitski doesn’t hit hard enough” and transitioned into “learn to love you,” an electric bedroom-pop song about being a badass. I thought it was fantastic that mxmtoon was able to showcase the side of her that makes her someone to watch in the indie-pop genre – but she also changed her instrument to a ukulele halfway through to provide a whimsical, quirky performance inspired by folk and poetry.
Tumblr media
A huge highlight was the acoustic segment of the concert, as the crowd was encouraged to sing along to mxmtoon’s unwavering voice and plucky ukulele. Everyone held up their cellphone lights in unison to “i feel like chet,” “cliché,” and “feelings are fatal.” The last is a personal favourite of mine, and I felt that it was done so well with mxmtoon standing under the spotlight, stagnant with her ukulele; such a grounded presence that differed from earlier.
The concert really did feel personal, and whether or not mxmtoon says the same thing each night doesn’t matter. I found the way she spoke to the audience very confident and engaging, and it is really refreshing to see an artist that involved with their fans. It felt like witnessing a garage concert; intimate and fun. I think what helped was that mxmtoon provided a lot of context as to why she wrote certain songs. This was especially interesting when she spoke about “victim of nostalgia” and “coming of age” – two songs inspired by her immigrant mother and father.
mxmtoon is definitely someone to watch, and someone I can see becoming a huge sensation in the future. I think she has the right relationship with her fans that will keep her going strong with support and love. Not only that, but she is an incredible performer, singer, and skillful songwriter with a knack for capturing the eclectic nature of love, teen and young adulthood, sexuality, and family. The concert ended with the crowd screaming for “Maia!” to come back on the stage, and she could not have ended it better with TikTok hits “prom dress” and “mona lisa.” To anyone that saw the show that night: I hope you felt heard, and I hope you had as fun and unique an experience as I!

Bitchboy - The Oozes Bitchboy, Bitchboy, I'm a fucking Bitchboy/ All I want in this whole world is to be your Bitchboy/ Bitchboy, Bitchboy, let me be your Bitchboy/ All I want in this whole wide world is to be your Bitchboy
Paper Rings - Taylor Swift I want to drive away with you/ I want your complications, too/ I want your dreary Mondays/ Wrap your arms around me, babyboy/ I like shiny things, but I'd marry you with paper rings
Sweet Tooth - Cavetown You said you love me exactly the way I am/ And you know I find it hard to understand/ Pay a visit to the doctor 'cause I have/ A sweet tooth for you/ I'm wide awake/ The sugar went straight to my brain/ Feel like a kid, I double tap/ My chest with my fist/ I like you/ Say it back
A Lovely Mess - Front Porch Step I'm sorry if I come off strong/ And it could be that you're all wrong/ For me but I just had to see/ 'Cause you are broken/ And I am such a wreck/ I think we'd make a lovely mess/ And darling I may not be everything you want/ But I can give you all I have
Alligator Skin Boots - The Front Bottoms And yeah, the doctors were nice enough/ They just said I'm fucked/ Just like my mom is fucked/ I bet your dad's fucked up/ And in the black light, I could tell a sick joke
Looking Out for You - Joy Again This is a love song for a girl/ Who will never know it's about her/ Know it's pretty stupid/ But I'm much too shy to tell her/ She is beaming that smile, all the while/ I'm all choked up on my own throat
Choke - IDKHBTFM Same with Timothy's, Toby going absolutely ballistic during a mission. The song is that exact vibes. Shut the fuck up you know I'm right.
Tongues - The Frights I keep my love, I want my blood inside of you/ Do you think I'm cute?/ Well, is it too late to check? And I don't care/ You've got your tongue against my neck
Drain You - Nirvana Chew your meat for you/ Pass it back and forth/ In a passionate kiss/ From my mouth to yours/ I like you

Module 3:Rhetorical Analysis
This story is about when Jenny Zhang met Mitski face to face. Ultimately I think the surface level purpose was for her to retell how that meeting went. But on a more personal level, I feel like the author's purpose for writing was so that people could better understand Mitski. Even though these retellings might be through rose colored glasses or ANY type of positively warped lens, it gives insight as to who Mitski is a person. The target audience is anyone who has listened to Mitski or simply knows who she is and what type of music she makes. No, I take that back. The target audience is POC girls. Specifically Asian/Asian-American girls who listen to Mitski’s music. Because they are the only ones who can truly understand the subject matter of this conversation.
The story starts with Jenny saying “We met online because Mitski read my essay about growing up Asian, listening to Weezer, and waiting to be objectified by a man, thinking it would be the closest I’d ever get to being loved.” My guess is to establish not only a backstory but also Jenny’s ethos [her authority] to retell this conversation. The two talk about their bodies and how they don't fit into white spaces which then segways into the topic of love, and how their experience with it has always been longing after it. Mitski’s song “Your Best American Girl” is all about how being a woman of color in America and trying to find true, genuine love feels nearly impossible. Because no one wants you for you, they want the stereotypical fantasy idea of you. Because POC girls are “not the moon... I’m not even a star”. When Mitski says things like “I just want to be a pretty girl whos perfect.” and how Jenny states that “Soulmates are only for white people.” it establishes the pathos of it all.The way these statements resonate with me is insane. I hadn’t even read the whole thing and I was itching to talk about it. Because as a POC girl I know exactly what they are talking about. Not to the fullest extent, but still. But that’s all that pathos is, I don’t have to be an Asian/American girl to relate to these painful relizations. I just have to be a girl, who is also a minority, in America.
The comics included in the margins of the story remind me of the little comments I add to the margins of my notebooks. Things that relate to the main topic, maybe not in a traditional way, but they matter and to not include them would be leaving out vital information. They are a visual representation of the lyrics (and themes) in many of Mitski’s songs and therefore make the article multimodal.
The repetition of quotes from Mitski at the end of each segment of the story seem to be a last-ditch effort to send home the message of that particular topic. Because these things were said by Mitski and are being restated in big, bold, colorful letters, it gives them a sense of authenticity and value. I think this is where logos come into play. By restating them in an obvious yet cohesive way, it can make the reader think “okay, that was important I should pay attention to that. Another example of logos is the insertion of tweets from Mitski. Even if Jenny has already stated whatever is said in the tweet, the tweet is still provided as extra credentials for the reader.
Mitski talks about going on tour and how she is like a “Mom” to her bandmates, even though she is only twenty-five. She talks about interviews and how they never respect her privacy, how they always want more and expect her to provide them with information that she once was comfortable talking about but now isn't. She says the public doesn't see her as a person but instead they put her on a pedestal, “Everyone wants you to become a cohesive symbol and I think I spend 80 percent of my public life energy trying to acknowledge that it's a complicated layered thing.” Mitski knows that as a non-white woman in the music industry, she doesn’t have the luxury of being mediocre if she wants to survive. Her music and skill has to be more than just “good” if she wants to make a sustainable living because there is no fallback plan for her like many of the white music artists have. There is no going back home to work at her parents company, no trust fund, nothing. She has to make it. She has to succeed.
I can honestly say that my expectations before reading this were not to relate to the subject matter as much as I did. Matter of fact, I didn’t expect I would relate to it at all. And yet I did, and I appreciate the fact that Jenny made this conversation for public consumption.

mitski songs ranked on how sad/relatable they are to me and the quality of my cry
note: I will be ignoring a lot of the actual meaning of the songs in my “analysis” because it’s my post and I get to do that
5. Townie
Ranked at number five because I really shouldn’t be crying to this but I do anyways ! This song puts feeling isolated into words and I will fall apart to this after my parents make a rude comment. Honestly makes me feel like more of a failure.
4. Two Slow Dancers
This song just makes me feel nostalgic. Like I’m missing the ignorant bliss of childhood while also realizing I will never get to go back. I’m here and I have to deal with everything happening now despite how crap it all is. I always think about the two slow dancers are me and myself <3 This song is on when I’m lonely (most Monday nights).
3. I Bet On Losing Dogs
Once again she puts it into words! Putting all my effort into the wrong things (I know she’s talking about SOs but let me have my moment). Something about the shaking guitar??? Whatever that instrument is?? Just amazing. Like I feel my tears waving along to that. I have to be in a specific mood to listen to this, however.
2. I Don’t Smoke
ANGER! I AM MAD! This song is just absolutely wonderful when I need to yell but I think my neighbors would call the police because I’m screaming so hard. “I am stronger than you give me credit for” !!!!! Like yes I know the actual meaning behind her words but I just love listening to it when I’m super pissed at someone. I’m an angry cryer which is difficult because I don’t want to show weakness, so sitting in my bedroom while crying to this gives me an outlet. I’m more angry than sad nowadays.
1. Last Words of a Shooting Star
Yup. Yupppp. Just like absolute sadness. You know absolute 0? That but absolute sadness. This ones been playing on repeat a little too much lately... Started labeling all of my issues as turbulence because of this song. The cry is sooooooo good. Like I want to give up so bad but this song just lets me cry to it and wraps me in a warm blanket and gives me warm milk.
closing notes: can you tell my favorite album is bury me at makeout creek? I have a playlist of all of these and when I’m feeling bored I’ll put it on and write depressing poems in my notes !
Honorable mentions: First Love / Late Spring, Your Best American Girl

PUNISHER December Issue Vol. 1: Top 10 Punisher lyrics that hit different
In no particular order, here’s a list of lyrics from Phoebe’s latest album, Punisher, that make us ache.
1. “I hopped the fence when I was seventeen / Then I knew / What I wanted” from “Garden Song”
Phoebe tweeted about the context of this quote when Punisher first dropped: “I broke into Huntington Gardens in Pasadena with @lukasscottfrank and his cute friends and they smoked weed and I was like I want to be cool.”
2. “I wanted to see the world / Through your eyes until it happened / Then I changed my mind” from “Kyoto”
In multiple interviews Phoebe has stated that “Kyoto” is about impostor syndrome, her trip to Japan, and being too depressed to leave her hotel room. Via NME, Phoebe described how, while in Tokyo, she constantly felt “... like [I was] living someone else’s life. I dissociate when bad things happen to me, but also when good things happen. It can feel like I’m performing what I think I’m supposed to be like. I wrote this one as a ballad first, but at that point I was so sick of recording slow songs, it turned into this.”
3. “What if I told you I feel like I know you / But we never met? / It’s for the best” from “Punisher”
The definition of the word “punisher” on which Phoebe bases the song’s titular is a mega-fan---someone who seeks out band members offstage to ask them details about all the minutiae of writing, playing, or recording, etc. Via Apple Music: “It’s kind of about the neighborhood [Silver Lake in Los Angeles], kind of about depression, but mostly about stalking Elliott Smith and being afraid that I’m a punisher — that when I talk to my heroes, that their eyes will glaze over.
4. “Always surprised by what I’d do for love / Some things I’d never expect” from “Halloween”
When asked over twitter what is the craziest thing she’s ever done for love, Phoebe responded “shit in a sandbox.”
5. “Drowning out the morning birds / With the same three songs over and over / I wish I wrote it, but I didn't so I learn the words / Hum along 'til the feeling's gone forever” from “Chinese Satellite”
There has been speculation that “drowning out the morning birds” is a reference to the line in Mitski’s “Your Best American Girl,” reading “You’re the sun, you’ve never seen the night / But you hear its song from the morning birds.” The line “Hum along ‘til the feelings gone forever” might be simplified to listening to a song on repeat until you tire of it. On “Chinese Satellite,” Phoebe says, “I have no faith — and that’s what it’s about.”
6. “When you saw the dead little bird, you started crying / But you know the killer doesn't understand” from “Moon Song”
The entirety of the Punisher album is a sort-of sequel to Phoebe’s first release, Stranger in the Alps. “Moon Song” in particular feels like the classic structure and sound many of her earlier tracks incorporate. “But you know the killer doesn’t understand” is a callback to “Killer,” the 6th song in Stranger, and ends up symbolizing a regression in direct contrast with the theme of growth the rest of Punisher seems to follow. On “Moon Song,” here’s what Phoebe has to say (via Apple Music): “The through line is that caring about someone who hates themselves is really hard, because they feel like you’re stupid. And you feel stupid.”
7. “I'm a bad liar / With a savior complex / All the skeletons you hide / Show me yours, and I'll show you mine” from “Savior Complex”
“Thematically, it’s like a sequel to “Moon Song.” It’s like when you get what you asked for and then you’re dating someone who hates themselves. Sonically, it’s one of the only songs I’ve ever written in a dream. I rolled over in the middle of the night and hummed — I’m still looking for this fucking voice memo, because I know it exists, but it’s so crazy-sounding, so scary. I woke up and knew what I wanted it to be about and then took it in the studio. That’s Blake Mills on clarinet, which was so funny: He was like a little schoolkid practicing in the hallway of Sound City before coming in to play.” (Phoebe, via Genius Lyrics)
8. I've been playing dead / My whole life / And I get this feeling / Whenever I feel good / It'll be the last time” from “ICU”
Originally “ICU,” changed to “I See You” and then changed back to “ICU” after Punisher dropped and it wasn’t a standalone EP, the song is about her relationship with Marshall Vore. “I had that line [“I’ve been playing dead my whole life”] first, and I’ve had it for at least five years. Just feeling like a waking zombie every day, that’s how my depression manifests itself. It’s like lethargy, just feeling exhausted. I’m not manic depressive — I fucking wish. I wish I was super creative when I’m depressed, but instead, I just look at my phone for eight hours. And then you start kind of falling in love and it all kind of gets shaken up and you’re like, “Can this person fix me? That’d be great.” This song is about being close to somebody. I mean, it’s about my drummer. This isn’t about anybody else.” (via Apple Music)
9. “Said she knows she'll live through it to get to this moment / Ate a sleeve of saltines on my floor, and I knew that / I would do anything you want me to” from “Graceland Too”
About an MDMA trip, loving her friend Julien Baker, and then “eventually turned into stuff that was going on in my life.” (via Genius Lyrics)
10. “And I'll get up and lay back down / Romanticize the quiet life / There's no place like my room” from “I Know The End”
“This is a bunch of things I had on my to-do list: I wanted to scream; I wanted to have a metal song; I wanted to write about driving up the coast to Northern California, which I’ve done a lot in my life. It’s like a super specific feeling. This is such a stoned thought, but it feels kind of like purgatory to me, doing that drive, just because I have done it at every stage of my life, so I get thrown into this time that doesn’t exist when I’m doing it, like I can’t differentiate any of the times in my memory.”
