FRIDAY FAM DROP - GER DUANY WALK TOWARDS THE RISING SUN . One of my favorite people on this planet is my brother Ger Duany. I can honestly say I’ve never been so simultaneously (and constantly) intrigued, inspired, amused, enlightened and enriched by a person. The story of a child-of-war is traumatic beyond what most of us can imagine. The task of revisiting and analyzing these memories is something that many don’t have the bravery to delve into. . I have been on the outskirts of Ger’s life for about a decade now and I know he has been wrestling with how to tell his life story since around 2003. Our initial interactions were based on artwork during his years as a top NYC model and gradually deepened as time went on. FRIDAY FAM DROPS - LIL BUCK: REAL SWAN There’s not much I haven’t said about fam & International dance star Charles “Lil Buck” Riley over the decade we’ve been connected. There’s few heights he hasn’t reached, triumphs that make jaws drop when you read them on paper but are often accomplished with surprisingly little fanfare because of the humble, low-key, easy-going dignity this brother brings to everything he puts his hands/feet to. . The documentary Lil Buck: Real Swan has been in production for many years. It explores Buck’s life and his rise to international success as well as the deeper roots of Memphis Jookin and how Buck fits into (and has shaped) the history of the style. The award-winning film is a passion project fueled by the artistic vision and storytelling skills of French director/screenwriter Louis Wallecan. The film premiered at Tribeca last year to wide critical praise and went on to win Best Documentary at the San Francisco Dance Film Festival. . Covid has slowed ALL of our projects down but I was thrilled to see that the film received a big international premiere in Paris in mid August. TuTchTMAS AFTERGLOW - BAKARY DIALLO Since everyone’s lives and social media timelines are mad busy during the holidays I began the habit of waiting until after Christmas to post my holiday creations/finds. I call it the season of TuTchTmas, the afterglow of Christmas & the celebration of the changing year. . This is more of a pre-glow than an afterglow since Mr. Diallo is just on the cusp of his forthcoming blaze. I’ve been following this Harlem/Paris/Mali-rooted brother closely for a little over a year now. He first came to my attention thru TuTchTFav photog Jan C. (@bananeck) and Mother Agent/Model Scout extraordinaire Terence at @Bembelepictures. I research led not only to glowing remarks about Bakary’s work ethic & drive but a Wells Fargo/ CBS Ecomedia ad (mini bio) that showed me his incredible potential as an actor. Soon I learned that ".../actor" wasn't just the ubiquitous model tack-on but a serious and primary focus of study in his educational journey. Cameras, especially of the motion-picture variety, LOVE this kid. He’s blessed with a unique magnetic voice/accent/flow & what I call a Truth-transparent face —- which displays his true emotions (or expertly-acted emotions) to the highest degree. His sometimes difficult journey has honed an old-soul vibe, a perfect compliment his wide-smiling youthful exuberance. Bakary's soul glows like embers. With just the tiniest amount of fuel, his life purpose will spark into warming, light-giving flame. Watch. . OSCARS NIGHT Meanwhile, on other screens... we are only days away from the return of one of the best surprise hits of last season, UNDERGROUND! If you didn’t catch it first time around, I WHOLE-HEARTEDLY recommend a bingewatch of season one! I tuned in to see what John Legend was producing, but mainly because I’ve been a fan & supporter of lead Aldis Hodge for over a decade now. His career stretches into his childhood (you probably saw him in “Die Hard with a Vengeance” as Samuel Jackson’s little badass nephew when he was an 8-year-old) and he has been working literally non-stop ever since. IDENTIFIED AT LAST!!! (PART I) If you’ve been following me for very long I’m sure you’ve heard me shouting about Femi Ogun’s Identity School of Acting in London and 2 of my favorite young black actors to emerge from this amazing school. Back when I first started dropping their names very few Americans had heard of them and I had to jump through lots of hoops just to see their UK-based work here in the States. Now household names and on the lips of Hollywood’s movers and shakers, John Boyega and Malachi Kirby have officially blown up, and Femi Oguns is FINALLY getting the shine he deserves in the British mainstream media - 14 years after lighting his candle in the darkness. (Selah) Having watched misters Kirby and Boyega grow from American obscurity to “it boys” gives me an even deeper kindred sense of brotherhood with Identity than I had before. (and helps bolster the claims I sometimes hear in my corner of the industry about my “eye for new talent.”) Even tho I definitely fit the description of “outsider,” hahaha, this report by the BBC’s Colleen Harris gave me a warm familial feeling.
