Today’s Muse - Nico Parker. There is something about her that made me love her instantly in The Last of Us. When I discovered her name is the same as my daughter’s, I liked her even more 🥰. Nico is the daughter of Thandiwe Newton and film director / screenwriter Ol Parker. Wow!! So touched by this post: @adventuresofellagrace with @make_repost ・・・ Storyboarding! Wow.! The first 2 days of filmmaking camp felt like a full week. Ella (and Mom, whose also going through the session have learned soooo much. Ella created a 📝 2.5-page script 👩🏻‍💻 using @finaldraftscreenwritingsoftware for the first time, which translated into: 🎥 13 scenes 🏠 in 5 locations (all within a house) 👧🏽👦🏻🧒 requiring 3 child actors 🎬 in 43 shots. We were burning the midnight oil to finish the storyboarding, and didn’t get to the floorplanning (combining all the shots into a sketch of each location so we know what to shoot out of sequence at the same time) or a shot list. And she had to shoot all her scenes with the actors on day 3. 🚫 Ella said she doesn’t want camp to end and despite always having respect for each person she’s working with on sets, this process has bubbled up an immense new appreciation for why there are such large crews and the amount of work it takes to make screen projects. 🤯 We are BLOWN away that Ella’s short 2.5-page script translated into 43 shots. She cut one or two here along the way, and added a few alts. Main takeaway so far is what the writer needs to put in the script and what she DOESN’T. Just enough to tell the story and allow the director and actors to envision it. 🎬 Then the director comes in and brings the story to visual life. Which is why Ella LOVES this part so much. We are giddy over here! Thank you: @jenniferjacono @jaconostudios @jaimieenglewrites @wiftflorida for the priceless education at this young age. You’re influencing the course of Ella’s life in the best possible way!! #wiftfl #wiftiesworking #filmflorida #floridafilm #femalefilmmaker #femalefilmmakers #futurefilmmaker #sagaftra #sagaftramember #childentertainer #womeninfilm #womeninfilmandtv #wift #childactor #childactress #younghollywood #industrykids #youngactorslife #hollywoodkids #childentertainer #triplethreat #schullerkids #hollywoodsouth #spacecoast #femaledirector #femaledirectors #filmcamp #filmmakerlife (at Satellite Beach, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce2GvU8uQY5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Legendary actor Dennis Quaid revealed he had a “casual” addiction to cocaine before becoming a huge star. Tinseltown has been known to allegedly supply many A-list stars with a never-ending flow of their favorite vice. Sometimes, all it takes is an illicit drug for an actor or actress to put on their best performance. Celebs consider it a working relationship that’s mutually beneficial for everyone who’s involved, and their fans are usually clueless that the “candid” photos are carefully crafted before they’re ever released to the public. Pratt called it “the best gig ever,” and he and Montag raked in over $1 million by selling their pictures. They would pose for “cheesy over-the-top shots” that were then sold to magazines across the globe. Long before Kardashian had the paparazzi in the palm of her hand, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag of MTV’s The Hills had a 50/50 agreement with a company named Pacific Coast News. Kardashian reviews every image, and they’re heavily photoshopped before they’re sold to magazines. She texts the photographer regularly and flies him around the world to photograph her. Kim Kardashian is one star who keeps her personal paparazzo on speed dial. In 2016, a photographer revealed that many celebs stage their pictures to have better control over their image. If you look at a picture in a tabloid or on a gossip website, and it looks like the celebrity is posing in a staged photo, they probably are. Here are ten dark secrets and horrifying tales that blow the lid off of the entertainment industry. There’s also staggering shallowness, abuse, heartbreak, and more than a little crime. There’s more to Hollywood than money, fame, red carpet appearances, and millions of adoring fans. If you’ve thought about becoming a huge star and being famous, you might want to reconsider your plans after finding out what it’s really like to live in the limelight.

Now I have to fight against even more because people are doubting that my skin color is really mine. Now that mega-producer Harvey Weinstein and other powerful men in Hollywood have been exposed, it has shed a lot of light on the secret side of the industry. It’s very annoying and aggravating, because it’s not as if I haven’t had to fight all my life to be accepted. “I don’t know what it is that is making people question my skin color. I just thought that I was black, and then that was it,” she says. I never knew that my color was a different type of brown. “I don’t know who started this rumor, but I never knew that I had a different type of black. The singer has received a great deal of backlash online, as fans of the show also claim she takes melanin pills to make her skin darker than it is, something she finds extremely offensive. “I do enhance it by wearing extensions because it’s hard for maintenance to have a perfect Afro 24/7, but I did decide to still rock my ‘fro because it’s the style that I feel that’s closer to representing who I am.” Even when I saw him outside of scenes, I was like, ‘Dude, what was that about? Did you really mean that?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, what’s the problem?’”Īs for her afro, she’s baffled by why people care so much about her hair. “Every single word that came out of Young Hollywood’s mouth, he really meant. I would say the music industry, or the entertainment industry in general, sometimes can have that concept that you have to look a certain type of way in order to succeed, which I am completely against.”įollowing their interaction, where he also referred to her as a “Nutella Queen,” she was admittedly shocked and checked with him to make sure he wasn’t just doing it for the cameras. It wasn’t shocking because unfortunately a lot of the Latin community has that mentality - not even just the Latin community. “I’ve had people judge me so many times based off my looks and not off my talent, and I try to be mellow and try to see their points of view and have them understand my point of view. “Unfortunately, he wasn’t the first person to tell me that,” Amara, 27, tells Us Weekly in an exclusive interview.

#YOUNGHOLLYWOOD PODUCER MOVIE#
WHO is Young Hollywood? Not to play that “I don’t know her” game, but I don’t know who this is, and I know a lot about pop culture. It's sad that people actually think like this. In this clip, Dominican singer Amara La Negra face intense colorism and racism from producer Young Hollywood. Nina Gregory edited this story for broadcast.I’m not a watcher of any of the Love and Hip Hop franchise, but I had to take a moment out of my day to write about the controversy that flared up during the first episode of Love and Hip Hop Miami. Until then, you can watch Marsai Martin playing the boss in Little - which opens on Friday. When asked where he sees her in a decade, he laughs: "as my boss." Kenya Barris definitely has not underestimated Marsai Martin. "Like, a lot of people kind of underestimate me because I am a kid," she says. Marsai points out that anyone coming off 18 interviews would be tired. Like, 'Are you good? Are you good?' OK, she's done 18 interviews in a row, you know." "So we are all kind of checking in on each other. "The billboards are now on the sides of buildings, and it's amplified in a way that is new for all of us," she says. Marsai's mom Carol Martin says the family can already feel the difference between their daughter being on a sitcom vs. It's a tough, tough industry and I would encourage her to take heart and find solace and community - in solidarity with other women of color." "I mean, we know that it can be difficult to maintain a certain high-profile standing and standard within the industry, and that opportunities don't come along as often, as readily, as easily for women of color. "Because I'm concerned about what is going to happen after this film has been released and what comes next," Mask says. Specifically Ava DuVernay, Kasi Lemmons (director of Eve's Bayou) and Dee Rees, whose screenplay for Mudbound was nominated for an Oscar. Mask hopes Marsai looks to other women of color creators for mentorship and inspiration. "I do think it's a way to sell the film," Mask says. She's a film professor at Vassar College who studies African-American cinema. Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer said he looks forward to moviegoers seeing Marsai in Little and "watching her evolve as a filmmaker." "Basically, all the ideas you come up with, or anything that you have in mind for TV, film, any of that - in my case, you talk to Universal about it, and it goes to them first," she says. In February, Universal signed what's called a "first-look" production deal with Genius Productions - the company Marsai runs with her parents.

"'Well, remember that movie Big? I want to do a movie called Little.' And I was like, 'I'm going to stop you right there.' Nothing more needed to be said."īarris is one of the producers on Little, which is being distributed by Universal Pictures. "She said, 'Well a lot of people tell me I kind of remind them of Gabrielle Union or of Taraji P. She ran the idea by her boss, Kenya Barris. Her parents kept that promise, and submitted the photos to four. The photographer was so impressed with the way she took direction that he offered a bigger discount - if her dad promised to show the photos to a few talent agencies. Marsai was 5 at the time, and they signed her up to get her portrait taken. Martin says the family was minding its business at a mall near their home in Texas when a woman handed them a coupon for glamour shots. "We stumbled upon this by accident," says her father, Joshua Martin. She's now 14 years old - "almost 15," she says. In fact, she's been acting for almost a decade. Marsai may be new to the big screen, but she needs no introduction to fans of the ABC sitcom Black-ish, in which she's starred since 2014. In the end credits, the movie screen reads: "Introducing Marsai Martin." Little is a comedy where a big and powerful tech executive wakes up as a little kid. The youngest executive producer working in Hollywood makes her big-screen debut this weekend. Marsai Martin stars as little Jordan Sanders in Little, a wrong-body comedy inspired by the 1988 Tom Hanks film Big.

And it helps when you can write so well too. Next Film: Triple Frontier (Five friends re-unite to take down a South American drug lord) He worked on tiny budget and first time actors but still managed to create a sensation.įilmography: ‘Margin Call’, ‘All is Lost’, ‘A Most Violent Year’ Why Him? : Got Oscar nominated with his first film ‘Beasts of Southern Wild’ and even though the film itself might be slightly overhyped, it can’t hide the immense talent of Zeitlin. Next Film: Untitled Benh Zeitlin Project (A story centering on a strange ecosystem where the aging process is warped, and people grow old either very quickly or incredibly slowly.) His last film ‘’Loving’ was very well received and it will be compelling to see what he does with his next few projects. Why Him? : Jeff Nichols is one of the directing talents that is waiting to burst into the scene in a big way. Anyway, whether you like the type of the films he makes or not, this guy is here to stay.įilmography: ‘Take Shelter’, ‘ Mud‘, ‘Loving’, ‘Midnight Special’ ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ is again dark, but slightly more palatable. ‘Blue Valentine’ is an exceptional film, but it is not for everyone. Why Him?: If you are into dark, brooding romantic dramas look no further. An introspective journey into the vortex of our senses, tinkering with cinema’s boundaries.) Next Film: ‘Matalhead’ (The story of a heavy metal drummer who blows his eardrums out and must learn to adapt to a world of silence. And even though Cooper hasn’t burst into the scene in any big way with his first four films, expectation is, that he will very soon.įilmography: ‘ Blue Valentine‘ ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ Why Him? : His first film ‘Crazy Heart’ gave Jeff Bridges his first and long-deserving Oscar. Taking the boy into her care, the teacher must fight for their survival against horrors beyond imagination.) Next Film: ‘Antlers ‘ (A young teacher discovers that her troubled student’s father and younger brother harbor a deadly supernatural secret. After directing ‘Black Panther’, he is one of the hottest property in the town called Hollywood.įilmography: ‘ Crazy Heart‘ ‘Out of Furnace’, ‘Black Mass’, ‘Hostiles’ Why Him? : His first ‘Fruitvale Station’ generated a lot of buzz, so much so, that it was inches away from getting nominated for Best Picture. The reason of my belief is the degree of difficulty of both his films and the confidence with which he pulled off both of them.įilmography: ‘ Fruitvale Station‘, ‘Creed’, ‘Black Panther’ It will be interesting to see if he can keep up his tempo. In addition to all this, Ed Pressman has initiated a program to distribute foreign films which would otherwise have little chance of being seen in the U.S.: last year he presented Fassbinder's Despair later this year he will do the same for Bo (Elvira Madigan) Wideberg's Victoria, as well as for the British hit of this year's Filmex, The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle.Next Film: ‘Warcraft’ (An epic fantasy/adventure based on the popular video game series) Pressman's current productions reflect that this is more than a trend - it is, for Pressman, a way of making films: Oliver stone, the Oscar-winning writer of Midnight Express, is now directing his first film, The Hand New York City experimental filmmaker Lewis Jackson has just completed shooting a $2 million feature, Santa, to be released at Christmas and, John Milius returns to directing - the first time he has done so in over two years - with Conan, in January. Pressman's films are virtually a catalogue of these decisions: Brian de Palma's Sisters and Phantom of the Paradise Terrence Malick's Badlands Paul Williams' Out Of It, The Revolutionary, Nunzio and Dealing Sylvester Stallone's Paradise Alley, Joan Tewkesbury's Old Boyfriends, and John Byrum's Heart Beat. Edward Pressman is generally considered the one young Hollywood producer today who consistently focuses on giving “new talent” a chance: hiring first-time directors, bringing underground filmmakers to the Hollywood forefront, and giving directors having difficulty finding work the chance to direct again.

“If the producers of Supergirl wanted a Latina woman to play Maggie Sawyer, why not cast one? How many people know Meagan Good is part Puerto Rican? Or that Harry Shum Jr. She’s even gone on record stating how Hollywood wants their Latinas to look Italian,” she wrote. “Gina Torres is a proud Afro-Cuban American woman who, as far as I know, never gotten a chance to play a Latina woman on screen. This can, and has, further contributed to the alienation of Afro and Indigenous Latinxs within our community.” “It also, I personally feel, encourages some individuals within the Latinx community to reject their indigenous or black ancestry in favor of whiteness. “By ignoring those parts of our community, media creates a distorted image of our culture, which allows the continued whitewashing of our community, ignorance regarding our identities, and contributes to a lack of empathy of our struggles,” she wrote. It’s important that media reflects the actual reality of the Latinx community, which includes a wide range of races, and even religious identities.” I have to– otherwise I contribute to the continued problems of colorism in both the Latinx community and within a larger worldwide context,” wrote Desiree Rodriguez, Editorial Assistant for Lion Forge sci-fi comic book Catalyst Prime and writer for Women on Comics and The Nerds of Color, in an email interview.”By favoring women who look like me, you erase the multitude of men, women, and non-binary Latinx individuals who don’t look like me. “I understand my privilege as a light-skinned afro-Boricua woman. Even though it’s women of color, it’s much more valuable in media to be light skinned than dark skinned.” I really feel like that’s an issue that translates to the screen as well. I think that’s…something that’s very important,” said Kimberly Hoyos, filmmaker and creator of The Light Leaks, a website designed to support, educate and empower female and gender non-conforming filmmakers. “Even in my Latino community, there’s a weird emphasis on how dark you are or how light you are or where you’re from. “…here’s obvious merit in bringing in new talent because that director could be the next person who discovers the next actor. All of them sounded off on the colorism and anti-blackness that affects Latinx who don’t look like, as Young Hollywood hinted at in his own words to Amara, the stereotypical “Latinx” person. Last year, I interviewed several Latinx content creators for my longform piece on what it’s like being Latinx in Hollywood. If you needed an example of one of the biggest issues facing Afro-Latinx, look no further than Young Hollywood’s interaction with Amara. Young Hollywood needs to check himself, because he’s a prime example of anti-blackness in the Latinx community. I’m actually not sure what I would have done, but it would definitely be something people wouldn’t expect from someone as quiet-natured as me.Ĥ. “ NUTELLA QUEEN”? Amara played this exchange much cooler than I think I would have. First, it’s the overt colorism and anti-blackness he embodies with comments about not being glamorous with an afro, mocking the Black Power fist, and calling Amara “Afro-Latina Queen” and “Nutella Queen,” not to mention questioning the validity of the Afro-Latina identity.ģ. How disrespectful and racist can he be? It’s as if he went out of his way to be disrespectful. Basically, what I’m saying is that Young Hollywood doesn’t seem as popular as he wants everyone to believe.Ģ. I feel like if Young Hollywood were really important in the music industry, I’d certainly know more about him than his tragic presentation of himself on Love and Hip Hop Miami. WHO is Young Hollywood? Not to play that “I don’t know her” game, but I don’t know who this is, and I know a lot about pop culture. It's sad that people actually think like this.
