Something i sorely missed from Fates in 3H was each country having unique classes and, more importantly, how Fates used what few characters defected from one country to one another to great effect in gameplay by always having the turncoats fulfill niche and valuable roles in Corrin's army that no one else could do as easily or as well, which represented the differences between the two armies excellently without needing to spell it out to the audience:
Silas is the only Nohrian defector in Birthright and (not counting Sophie) the only one who starts off in the Cavalier class, bringing some much-needed bulk to the mostly fast-and-strong-but-frail Hoshidan army by virtue of being one of the few units in that route with excellent potential for being a physical tank due to his high HP and Defense, along with being one of the only ways for Hoshidan units in that route to reclass into Cavalier and get access to that class's unique skills by getting either an A+ or S Support with him.
Kaze is one of two Hoshidan defectors in Conquest and the only unit in that route to start off in the Ninja class, giving him a very valuable niche due to most of the physical-based Nohrian units having middling to bad Speed and Resistance and/or 1-or-2 range weapons when enemy Mages have 1-and-2 range attacks, above-average Speed and excellent Magic and Resistance, which makes them very dangerous for most non-mage units to go up against due to being able to double a decent chunk of the player's physical units, aim for their weak spots by targeting Resistance, attack without fear of being countered due to going after units that can't fight back in close-quarters/at range, and even resisting the player's Mages due to having high Resistance themselves, something Kaze completely circumvents by having excellent Speed and Resistance, decent Strength, and 1-and-2 range physical weapons, making him the ideal candidate to deal with enemy Mages since he will always counter-attack and double them if they ever get into a fight with him, very likely killing them in the process due to their bad-to-terrible Defense stats; he's even still valuable against Physical units since, while he's going to do little-to-no-damage against most of the ones with even decent Defense, he can still debuff them so someone else can finish them off.
Mozu is the second Hoshidan defector in Conquest, and fulfills the valuable niche of being able to be easily and immediately reclassed into the best Archer on the route since, while Shura, Niles and Nina all start off with bows from the get-go, their Strength stats and growths are all middling at best, making them very ineffective against anyone other than Mages and flyers, whereas Mozu gets excellent STR growths if she's made into an archer, which is easy enough to do when she only needs one Heart Seal to do so as soon as she's recruited and you get a free one as early as Chapter 9, meaning that not only is reclassing her not cutting into the limited funds Conquest gives you, but also makes it extremely likely for her to snowball into a monster of a unit with even decent investment put into her, which is even further helped by Fates Archers getting a massive buff and being very useful in general.
Those kinds of contrasts are unfortunately not possible in 3H due to a combination of unified classes and, more damningly, the vast majority of the cast being able to defect to the player's army in every route, unlike the at most 1 or 2 turncoats per route in Fates. While the lack of unique classes for every country meant that 3H would never be able to achieve the same level of worldbuilding-through-contrasting-country exclusive-classes'-strengths-and-weaknesses as Fates from the word go (even if i find it understandable for IS to want to cut down on the amount of classes Fates), they could have still had some decent country-contrasts by severely limiting the amount of defectors per-route and making the ones that do join the player's side fulfill unique niches that no one else on the player-chosen country could, like they already did in Fates; it'd give more individuality to both the units and the routes, give the non-Faerghus countries some actual worldbuilding, and solve one of the biggest issues with 3H's character writing, that being that so many of the out-of-house recruits have next to no reason to betray their country so easily and willingly.
TL;DR 3H's recruitment system was a mistake on every conceivable aspect; nothing particularly new, but it bears repeating just how dogshit that aspect of the game is and how impressive it is for a single gameplay system to fuck over a game's characters, worldbuilding, story and gameplay all at once.
Yep, recruitment really sucks a lot -
But I'd say, it also works with the reclassing/certificates, like when we were presented with Adrestia, I latched on the "the Empire is known for its magic users!" and thought we were going to have a lot of mages!
But if you can reclass whoever you want in a mage, why should it make a difference that the Empire has Hubert, Lin and Doro as mages, when the Lions only have Mercie and Annette, and the Deers only have Lysithea and Marianne who are geared towards a "magic class"?
Remove the "uwu teaching uwu school" part, and we would have gotten more interesting gameplay and story integration, like the BE only have to count on Supreme Leader and Ferdie has tanks, so their exclusive maps would be geared towards not having any chokepoints to defend because they don't have the units for that - so it'd encourage an offensive approach.
Ditto for the Kingdom who wouldn't have a lot of mages (tfw the royal magical school doesn't count) but could have more "physical" oriented units, who could be, like in FE15, super frail against magic units.
As for the Deers, maybe make a more difficult class, with a majority of ranged hitters, so idk, positioning, using ledges or what not in what could have been their exclusive maps might have helped make a difference between those three nations, how they have a different military/culture and bring a different gameplay.
Unique classes for each faction being, idk, Gremory (with a +1 range) for Adrestia, some sort of ranger/mounted archer for the Alliance who ignores terrain penalty (and the Valentian range for bows) and Faerghus BaD so they get exclusive armored classes, like Great Knight.
(or worse, great holy knight, with "bold healing" working like FE5 staves when you sometimes waste two uses of a staff)
I really liked the concept of unique classes myself!
If recruitable units were less in number and had more reasons to join than "uwu teacher uwu" we could have had a better game - Nopes tried to play with it a bit, but couldn't flesh out too many recruitments because Earl Grey, still I really liked how SB poaches Shamir (even if there's no payback, I'd have loved it for Shamir to turn in a red unit if you field her against the Church!) and how Ashe feels like dirt when he betrays the Kingdom.
And as annoying as she is, Doro too sort of works, as she keeps her Supreme Leader admiration even if, say, unlike Caspar in AM (where he feels like people hate him for being Adrestian) it doesn't bring anything special to the table.
FWIW, bar Caspar ditching the Empire to join the Church or the Kingdom, I can't see anyone from the Empire join another side, even Ferdie (Nopes really demolished him for me, sorry).
The Alliance is supposed to be the place where no one really cares about its state.... but Lorenz, out of anyone, defecting? Ditto for Lysithea who cares about her parents as they are the only thing she has left? Or Raphael abandoning his sister? No. I cannot see them abandon Leicester.

Gameplay notes for the future:
As far as reclassing goes: Sage Mauvier is great
...
It's fucking hard to reclass without planning a lot ahead of time since you only have two chapters to spread Lief around like a cheap whore, alright?
Inheritance:
Sigurd: every mounted unit wants canter (1k/2k) + momentum (1k/2k)
Lucina: Dual Support/Dual Assist (3k total) on MC are great
Lyn: Speedtaker (2k) is niche but nice on coinflip speed units; otherwise, Alacrity (1k/2k/3k) is nice on speedy crit animals like Kagetsu or Kagetsu
Roy: Hold Out (2k/3k) goes great with Diamant or maaaaybe a dedicated Ephraim partner? Some possible utility on Saphir, though your SP is better spent somewhere else
Kamui: Quality Time (250/500) is worth on MC/dancer for support. Draconic Hex (2k) might go better on units that can avoid counters; ones that are too slow to double and OHKO but not too slow to drop. Incidentally, I've heard very good things about Yunaka/Kamui and MC/Kamui, though I haven't messed with them myself
Marth: cracked lol Break Defenses (2k) is great on triangle units, Perceptive (250/500) is nice on speedy frontliners like Kagetsu or MC
Celica: ...good question 😔 only a physical unit would want Holy Stance (100/1k). Resonance (2k/3k) is basically free damage, but again, you have better things to buy
Micaiah: Healing Light (200) is good on staffbots like Framme or a griffin rider
Leif: Vantage (500/1k/2k) on Diamant or Saphir may have a niche; otherwise you're just using him for his profs
Bylat: ...Mentorship (250) on a support I guess? If you had to inherit something?
Ike: Wrath (2k) on Diamant/Saphir or a similar self-damage synergy unit and maybe Reposition (200) on a high-mobility unit
Eirika: Lunar Brace (2k/5k) is outrageously expensive. It's also limited to physical attacks, and uses the enemy's defense--so it's great against armors and worthless against mages. Only skill worth getting off her save maybe Dodge for Seadall, but goddamn, the cost
Edelgard: str/dex+5 is enough stats to be worth slotting but 8400 SP?! Not in this economy
Tiki: STARSPHERE (1.5k) ON EVERY UNIT
Magic weapons:
Levin Sword or Flame Spear on your local pegaslut (prob Chloe)
Flame Spear comes with Mauvier for a reason
Levin Sword can also work on MC or Yunaka. Maybe even Clanne/Jeanne depending on your luck? Merrin and Timerra look like they have growths to support magic weapons, though they didn't get those levels for me
Radiant Bow: glue to Fogado's hand

Alright so here's the team I'm taking into endgame for my Fire Emblem Engage Hard Mode run. I don't think any of my class picks are too weird, but I barely did any reclassing on my first run, so it feels significant to me. Units are listed in order of recruitment. I'm putting down a "read more" in case people are worried about getting late-game recruits spoiled, any also just so this big long post doesn't clog up people's feeds too much.
I hope you like Canter, because I sure do
Alear (I named her Syldra)
Sword Griffin Knight; S-Rank Xander; Sword Power 4, Canter
Since Alear gets her Emblem form, I was comfortable switching her off an Emblem Ring. I consider this a pretty straightforward build; Flyer mobility and Canter enable her personal skill very well, and then Sword Power and Chivalry ensure that she'll do solid damage. My only complaint is that I didn't think of reclassing to Griffin (and necessarily unlocking staff proficiency) or of using Sword Power until after losing the first batch of rings, so I didn't get to use Alear in her final form until the lategame.
Clanne
Lance Hero; Sigurd; Dual Assist+, Reposition
I like this setup a lot. Brave Assist, Dual Assist, and the movement boost from Sigurd make Clanne effectively a damage boost for the rest of my army.
Framme
Martial Master; Lucina; Canter, Staff Mastery 5
First and foremost a utility setup. Debilitate with staffs, protect allies with Chain Guard/Bonded Shield, and occasionally bash some kneecaps with Flashing Fist Art.
Anna
Sword Mage Knight; Byleth; Canter+, Momentum
I like Byleth on a mounted character because more movement is good for Goddess Dance. Plus, the big Luck boost helps trigger Make a Killing, which is helpful for me specifically because I am not good at making financial decisions in video games nor in real life.
Yunaka
Thief; Corrin; Canter, Gentility/Bravery+
Daggers+Draconic Hex can cripple most targets, and Fog Dragon Vein+Trained to Kill with a crit-boosting engraving on her weapon means she is occasionally really good at securing kills. Bravery ensures that she can always deal some damage, therefore ensuring that her daggers properly debuff things.
Diamant
Successor; Roy; Canter, Speed +5
Honestly kind of a filler pick when I realized that I had 14 deployment slots for the last few maps and not 12 like I thought. I went with Diamant because he can use S-rank swords and I wanted to start using my legendary weapons.
Ivy
Lindwurm; Celica; Canter, Speed +4
The other character I added to my lineup to fill a newly-acquired vacancy, but unlike Diamant she fills a genuine niche, since I didn't have a good fit for the Celica ring on my lineup that didn't have a different Emblem I really wanted on them.
Kagetsu
Sword/Axe Wyvern Knight; Lyn; Canter, Gentility/Bravery+
Very much a meta pick. I took who seems to be considered the best physical combatant and put him into what seems to be considered the best physical combat class. Lyn ensures that he can double enemy speedsters like Swordmasters and Wolf Knights.
Fogado
Cupido; S-Rank Leo; Canter+, Bow Focus 5
Fogado exists for one purpose and that is to annihilate flyers with the Radiant Bow. Ideally I would have a Claude bond ring for Wind God, but the RNG just didn't pan out.
Panette
Warrior; Ike; Vantage+, Pair Up
Blood Fury+Wrath+upgraded Killer Axe=consistent 100% critical rates. Vantage and Pair Up help to prevent my hubris from killing her.
Hortensia
Sleipnir Rider; Micaiah; Canter+, Staff Mastery 5
Here pretty much exclusively for wacky staff shenanigans, using Micaiah to warp and debilitate en masse. My only regret is that I used up most of my Freeze staffs, and the shop never got them in unlimited supply like I thought it would.
Seadall
Dancer; Leif; Canter+, Quality Time+
Just straight grooving. He gets Leif because I struggle to find another unit that really wants his skillset more than another Emblem's, and Arms Shield protects Seadall from bows and tomes, which are most of the weapons directed at him whenever I fail to move him out of the danger zone.
Mauvier
Royal Knight; Eirika; Canter, Lance Power 4
I gave him a Brave Lance to take advantage of Lunar Brace. I've moved him and Alear to healing duty so that Framme and Hortensia can devote more of their inventories to wackier status staffs.
Veyle
Sword Wolf Knight; Marth; Canter, Gentility/Bravery+
Levin Sword Lodestar Rush goes brrrrrrrrrrr. She can't debilitate as well as Yunaka, but she still can add to poison stacks, which is neat. I also made her Alear's S-Support, and the two of them have tag-teamed a healthy amount of chapter bosses so far.

Lately I've been deeep into Fire Emblem Engage. I haven't figured my thoughts out on it for a review, but Ive got some non spoilers tips for anyone playing.
Fill your farm in Somniel with dogs. For whatever reason they give you ingots and have a pretty high change to get silver ingots. This dramatically improves your ingot economy with essentially no trade off.
Anna is actually a mage in disguise. She has the highest magic growth in the game and weak strength and def growths. She can be functional as a warrior with a radiant bow, but she does better in magic classes.
You should immediately promote units when you can. This gives them a bump of stats for promoting and access to better growths. In previous fire emblem games you often didn't want to do this since you would cap at level 20 in the promoted class early and not be able to gain more levels. Engage has plentiful, infinite actually, second seals and when a unit caps out in their advanced class you can send them back to level 1 in it while retaining all stats.
Speaking of promotions.. Once your unit is promoted to an advanced class they can second seal into any other advanced class was long as they have the weapon proficiency to do so. Let's look at Anna here. In previous games you'd have to level her to 10 as an axe fighter, then second seal her to a level 1 mage, then level her to 10 as a mage before promoting her to be a sage. This is 20 levels as a beginner class and is not ideal. In Engage you could just promote her to warrior/zerker at level 10 axe fighter and then second seal her to sage from there. It uses the same amount of seals but takes 10 less levels as a beginner class.
Weapon proficiency can be acquired by gaining bond with your emblems. The easiest way to do this is train with the emblem in the arena. It's very cheap and once a character gains weapon proficiency they permanently have it whether they have the emblem equipped or not.
Kagetsu is a monster. I don't know why he got shipped as he did, but he's just straight up better than most of your units. Reclassing him into hero, wyvern knight, or warrior is very strong.
Miciah's Great Sacrifice is absurdly broken for gaining exp and sp. It heals everyone on the map to full and 1 point of healing is 1 point of exp and sp. You can gain full levels off this skill and you should aim to use it at least once a map. This helps tremendously for leveling Jean or Anna in the early game when they would otherwise be pitiful and struggle to gain meaningful exp.
That's enough for now. I will return later with more fire emblem tips.

~*It’s time for: Headcanon Time | Guest Staring: @pieman1112 ~
Tumblr media
//This is going to be a long headcanon post but I wanted to give a little more context about Josephine's dream of being a Bow Knight. Since Shadows of Valentia is a remake of FE2 Gaiden, In the game Bow Knights are a male only class, while Pegasus Knight is a female only class. Which to me honestly is weird and makes no sense. In future games there many more women that can become archers and also bow knights and it took Fates to make the first male Pegasus Knight which was a long time coming.
So in this head canon, as a child Josephine wanted to be just like her dear grandfather Reginald the first. During his time in the military, he was a Bow Knight but also could become a Myrimidon, a sword unit, if there was a need for him to do so in battle. So when his youngest granddaughter asked if she could learn how to use a bow as well, he was more than honored to teach her everything he knew. His former military colleagues would tell him that he shouldn't teach her that. He would simply laugh and tell them, "If she want to use the bow to fight then so be it! She's my granddaughter after all!"
It was not easy at first to shoot an arrow while on a horse but with practice and her grandfather's guidance she managed to do so. When she was around 13 years old, it was her time to start her military training in the Rigelian army. Her grandfather had unfortunately passed away when she was 10 years old so he never got the chance to see her in her armor. Since Josephine had experience riding horses, it was easy for her to become a Cavalier and she did get used to using a lance, but when she asked about reclassing her to a Bow Knight, her grandfather's old colleagues refused to promote her to that unit. However, they did agree that she was skillful with a horse and had potential just like her grandfather. So they instead encouraged her to become a Paladin. All she really could do was customize her armor to look as close to a Bow Knight's armor but not make it too obvious for her peers to notice.
As a teenager, the Emperor Rudolf and those were close to him were intimating so she never brought up her wanting to be a Bow Knight to him. She mostly was on patrols near where she lived and sometimes fought terrors and monsters for the most part. When she turned 18, she had the choice of staying in the army and be promoted to Paladin or go back to being a boring noble woman to 'prepare for marriage'. She picked the latter option as she realized she would never get to be a Bow Knight while the old military order was still around. So she gave up on her dream believing that no one in Valentia would ever think that a woman could be a Bow Knight. She never spoke about her time in the military to anyone except to Berkut. The only reason he knows is because he found Josephine's military records when he was making sure she would be good friend for Rinea and was confused why someone with high marks would suddenly leave. She had told him that it was better for her family if she married a higher noble in the future and she enjoyed being in Rinea's company. "That does explain why you were able to fight back those assassins with a lance with ease. It is a shame really, you would have been an excellent Paladin for my army. Should you ever change you mind, I can have that arranged. I am the crown prince after all." Is what Berkut told her. He did however make her a secret bodyguard for Rinea but would be a 'lady in waiting' or some sorts in public. Josephine agreed to this and as order she never told Rinea the truth about it but Rinea figured it out easily since Josephine helped her get away from any fighting close by and had seen her fight before.
Perhaps due to Alm and Celica being much more open with changes, Josephine feels like perhaps she might be able to become a Bow Knight or at least have other girls like her be able to become archers. She has yet to tell her Hunter (or any beloved that could have had) about her military days since they are not the happiness moments in her life but he will find out soon enough. It will certainly be a huge surprise to everyone when she does show off in a battle the same skills that Bow Knights have.

Guys my decision to play Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon lapsing between sleep and Victorian boy sickness where I must gaze out at the river wistfully was a horrible decision, but I’m having a great time! Im on chapter 9 right now and my team is looking a little something like
Marth - He’s actually been really good!! I haven’t used him for jsckshit, but he’s on par with everyone, has been leveling up well, and has been able to handle himself. So like. Yay!! Also busted ass rapier win.
Caeda - I knew she was good but DAMN. DAMN??? Wing spear is wild too, shes just absurd. She’s gotten a lot of strength too, which I know dosent usually happen. She could probably solo a chapter me thinks. Also like, love her personality, glad she gets to have one!
Cain - CRITICAL KING!!! He’s literally been stat blessed, his strength and speed and skill are all just so good. He’s just tearing through shit left right and center, I really want to give him a refined steel sword. He deserves it.
Abel - I love dropping him in a pile of units and watching him somehow come out alive. He’s been doubling people for a while but is still struggling to solidly pick up kills. No dig on that though, I only bring it up because he’s so good at literally everything and I can stick him anywhere.
Norne - Im playing on normal just for her, and GOD does she suck but I love her so very dearly for the times she doesn’t. She’s finally starting to double people! Also I gave her a refined steel bow called “Bell Toll” because she always reminds me of bells. She’s sitting at a solid 6 strength rn, but, I’m remaining hopeful!
Cord - The best looking of the 3 axe man, and you can fight me on that. I only tried using him when I learned he made a pretty decent black mage, and DAMN does he actually make a pretty good black mage?? 100 hit rates, doubling, actually leveling magic… also I gave him a personal refined fire tome, “Wildfire”. I’m headcanoning he awakened his magic after I killed Bord off with no remorse. Also my boss killer!
Lena - Staff homie! Keep it up please!! Im begging!!!
Matthis - “Wouldn’t it be funny if I used him?” Yes, and then he became good?? Like, he’s not great, but god damn it he can tank and dish out a good attack. Granted he hits. I’m taking him to end game though he’s my sad little fuckboy. I gave him a javelin called “GAY RIGHTS” because he genuinely supports them, like it’s a canonical thing. Wishing nothing but the best for him
Wolf - The only surviving member of the Coyote squad (I was using Sedger too but he ACTUALLY died without me sacrificing him like a nerd) and like. Reclassing him to a hero was so sexy of me. He’s just murdering the competition. He’s gotten basically all stats up when he levels up. He’s unstoppable. Also I gave him a steel axe called “Pack Blood” to reference the dead homies (ironically Sedger was still alive when I gave him it, but he died that chapter, so, call me a prophet)
Athena - Did not know she came at level 10 but I love her so much for that. She’s like… refusing to crit, even with a killer sword, but she’s still absolutely slicing through units so. No notes! Keep it up girl! Please!
Radd - The reason I didn’t reset when Sedger died is because he died right at the end and I spent Radd’s entire introduction chapter trying to train him in the arena and got some not horrible state growths. He was really making me question using him though after I had to reset like… 7 times because he kept dying in the arena. He’s so bad. He’s a cavalier now. He’s illiterate. I’m gonna make him work if it kills me.
Everyone else, and I mean *literally* everyone else has been sacrificed except for Julian. Call me a gravedigger. Im not sure who else im gonna keep around in the future (definitely Minerva, maybe Midia, Dolph, and Jake, *maybe* but not likely Jorge) but y’know, we’ll see!

I’m finally at the end of Engage! With only the final battle to go, I made a tier list of how I feel all the units performed IN BATTLE. Note this is NOT my feelings on them as characters or their appearance; this is how they fared for me as units. I wanted to do this BEFORE I beat the game since I’m interested to see how the stats and MVP scroll at the end differ from my perception. Check the read more for details on everyone!
Tumblr media
Louis - he started with insane defense and he basically ALWAYS gained more upon level-up. He had over 40 by the end, and that’s without him hitting 20 and resetting his class. I arguably made a mistake in promoting him to Great Knight since he became susceptible to “break” but most physical enemies still couldn’t touch him. Granted he WAS pretty slow and vulnerable to magic, but it’s kind of silly that the BEST physical tank is the first one the game gives you.
Hortensia - she’s clearly designed to be the best healer, between her personal skill and class skill, and she fulfills that role spectacularly. Unlike most other units on this list, I would literally ALWAYS deploy her, with exceptions made for maps with tons of snipers and/or ballistae.
Yunaka - not sure if I just got blessed, but Yunaka actually has insane strength. I paired her with Lyn and watched her annihilate foes from a huge distance. And of course she’s also great with Corrin since she gets boosted avoid from terrain and her personal skill made her likely to crit. I would not be surprised if she has the most kills in my army.
Alfred - I’ve seen a lot of people complain that he’s underwhelming or even bad, and I’m not sure if they got unlucky or I was super blessed, but from start to finish he’s been one of my best units. He’s a little slow but he has the second best defense after Louis, in addition to better strength, res, and HP. He was a natural pick for Ike. He also has INCREDIBLE luck, so giving him divine pulse really helped his shaky hit rate.
Rosado - he under-performed a little initially, but quickly gained steam. I think his biggest issue was just poor build, which can be fixed with skill inheritance from Leif. Once he could wield heavier stuff without being slowed down, he was fast AND hit hard. Plus he has HUGE HP and with a forged/engraved axe, the best avoid in the team! So he’s practically unkillable.
Fogado - he never stood out much but ALWAYS performs solidly and kept surprising me as MVP in battles, so clearly he did more work than even I realized. It helps that he can attack physically OR magically with the radiant bow, and he has the stats to do good damage either way. He’s also fast enough to double most enemies and not get doubled by anything, and sturdy enough to take a few hits. Just all around a great unit!
Seadall - automatic pick for the team most of the time since he’s the dancer. He rarely saw combat and contributed little offensively, but he did his job as dancer and was fast and bulky enough to survive when attacked. That’s enough.
Pandreo - he basically immediately invalidated Jean and Framme when he joined. Maybe they got stat screwed but he was just BETTER and continued to be so. His strength isn’t worth using fists for, but he has the 3rd best magic in my army and the 2nd best res. And excluding Mauvier (since he joined so late with big stats all-around), he’s also significantly faster than every other healer except Hortensia (and that’s sad because his speed is only so-so). His personal skill is also good and helps him hit and avoid. He’s probably the best OFFENSIVE magic user, and 2nd best healer. Natural pick for Nova if you’re willing to reclass him, too, since Ivy’s poor hit makes it a bad choice for her.
Kagetsu - he joins with incredibly solid stats, and has solid growths. RIP Lapis who stands no chance statwise compared to him. I was actually using him sparingly but after I got Caladbolg (and gave it Corrin’s refine) he was the obvious choice to use it, and that bumped him up to A-team material. He’s VERY fast, virtually never misses, hits relatively hard WITH a solid chance to crit and has about 100 avoid. So he dodges most attacks and he’s bulky enough to survive a hit or two anyway.
Alcryst - overall I find Fogado more useful due to having more move and being able to attack magically, but Alcryst benefits from having great personal and class skills. He’s fast, and not too fragile, and his dex is high enough that he procs Luna (or crits) A LOT, which is great. And his damage is OFTEN boosted by his personal skill, since generally you’ll have him behind someone who is baiting attacks. I find Alcryst to be situational and not always worth using, but he’s always done great when I deploy him.
Diamant - he has great utility in that he can use powerful swords AND axes, which means he’s a candidate anytime I’m looking to use either type of unit, and he’s solid all around. He’s not the best at anything, but he’s fast and bulky and hits relatively hard. I can always count on him to do well, though he rarely does amazing.
Timerra - She’s this high JUST for her use in combination with Ike and her general defensive capability, since she takes hits better than most. She’s initially held back by her awful build either slowing her down or preventing her from using more powerful weapons, and in my case she’s overall not as good as Alfred, but she’s still a great Ike user. She has great defense, and Ike further enhances that (which also translates to more powerful Sandstorm procs!). She benefits from being the ONLY unit I have who can use the Brionac, too.
Veyle - the literal last unit to join you, but she’s solid enough to be worth it. I prefer her magical dagger to her tome, which weighs her down a lot and has shaky hit rate. But mainly her benefit is in being a dragon (which gets good bonuses from ALL rings) and her personal skill making her great supporting others. Plus the game bumps the deploy limit from 12 to 14 in story chapters following her addition, so it’s clear you’re EXPECTED to use her.
Mauvier - like Veyle, he joins late and it’s clear the game wants or expects you to use him. He actually has even better stats than her and is incredibly easy to slot in since you can use him however you want - physically, magically, as a healer, or all of the above.
Alear - started the game out PRETTY BAD, personally. She was fast, but her strength was initially garbage (I went several early levels without it) plus she was a bit fragile. But after she promoted she started getting MUCH better levels and is now one of my best units. She’s THE fastest unit and will double literally everything, and has decent strength and surprisingly good defense. Plus she’s my only real fist user now, and it helps to break or kill mages/thieves/archers.
Citrinne - I came close to benching her several times because she typically under-performed and was SO fragile, but because I really like her I kept giving her chances and putting her in whenever possible. She’s probably in the bottom 3 in terms of speed AND defense. But she has the highest magic attack by a significant margin, and I’ve found a niche that works for her - killing wyrms. For several story chapters and paralogues in a row, she consistently had JUST enough power to actually kill them BY HERSELF (and since they’re so slow she can actually double them). Ideally I’d have her using Byleth to attack from a safe distance, but even if she’s up close, she also had JUST enough HP to survive a single hit. So she’s my designated wyrm killer, and her latest few levels actually helped patch up her defense and speed a bit, making her more useful overall!
Zelkov - he and Yunaka are incredibly different stat-wise. She’s got strength and res, he has speed and defense. That said he has AWFUL strength to the point where he couldn’t damage beefier enemies anymore. And since he’s in more likely to be hit by magic (due to mystical units ignoring terrain bonuses) his low res is more dangerous than Yunaka’s low defense. However, giving him the Carnwenhan helped A LOT. Even if he can only attack once, he does significant damage with it. Plus I engraved the weapon to give him even more avoid so he’s fairly untouchable. He’s a better dodge-tank than Yunaka now, even if she beats him offensively.
Ivy - solid all around, but a little slow and has trouble hitting, which is why I typically prefer other mages. She’s great at killing armored units but otherwise the faster, more accurate mages outclass her.
Celine - decent but kind of a master of none? Her strength is notable but not high enough to actually bother having her attack physically. Instead she’s just handicapped magically and often just barely fails to kill things. She is very fast and has high luck though. Generally okay, but again, other mages are better.
Panette - has huge HP and strength and nothing else. She can hit like a truck. When I use her I like to give her Lyn so she can eviscerate a faraway enemy and gain enough speed to double everything, which is basically a guaranteed kill for her. That said before she snowballs with Lyn, she has really bad speed and is danger of being doubled by most enemies, and even though her high HP means she won’t die, her low def and res mean it will hurt a lot. Worse, her hit rate is pretty poor. She’s a high risk, high reward character IMO. Fun to use sometimes but I typically play safer.
Merrin - she was great when she first joined but she’s been underwhelming in the endgame. She’s very fast but doesn’t benefit from boosted avoid like the thieves, and she’s not very tanky. Worse, she has abysmal strength - less than 20 when she’s nearly capped her class. I love daggers and poisoning enemies but she’s too weak to reliably do so, so she only comes out occasionally.
Boucheron - he’s pretty decent but generally outclassed by other axe and/or bow users. His hit rate is a real problem and his strength isn’t awful but it’s far from great. Thankfully he can wield even the heaviest axes with relative ease and he’s fast.
Chloe - very good in the beginning but has fallen off a bit. Part of it is I often don’t want too many flyers out, especially if there are archers about. But she is pretty fragile - low def and HP and surprisingly bad res for a pegasus knight. She is very fast and doubles everything though. Even then her strength is only decent so she fails to kill a good chunk of the time. Rosado is better at avoiding AND tanking hits, so she’s mostly invalidated. But she still has niche value on maps where there’s a lot of terrain for flyers to cross or sit on that others can’t access.
Clanne - I made him a mage knight, and he kind of got the short end of the stick by virtue of being a magic user but NOT a healer. I tend to stick to 3-4 magic users and healers per map, and using him means one less healer, so I often passed him over. Plus his magic attack isn’t great. That said he is FAST and accurate. He actually almost always does well when I use him, I just struggle to justify using him a lot of the time.
Etie - not counting Vander, she was the first unit I benched, basically right after Alcryst joined. Then I took her off the bench like 3 chapters later and tried REALLY HARD to save her, but it just never quite worked. She’s fast and has good strength, but she’s got SUCH bad build that she gets weighed down tremendously and can’t actually double most things. She’s also fragile as hell. I eventually made her a thief which helped her stats A LOT but even then I ended up benching her permanently around chapter 16-ish because she was way behind the other thieves or Merrin.
Anna - I WANTED to use Anna. I TRIED to use Anna. Unfortunately I tried to use her in her base class (since I assumed that, like MOST characters, it was a decent fit...) instead of looking up her growths ahead of time and reclassing her into something better suited. She is an incredibly bad axe unit (but a busted mage, apparently). I gave up on her around chapter 16-ish as well, although I’d stopped using her a few chapters beforehand. This was just when I realized she was too far behind to POSSIBLY recover.
Jean - getting Pandreo was the beginning of the end for him. Despite being a “trainee” unit his stats were overall not impressive. I liked having chain guard healers, but he was just too fragile and also basically ONLY useful offensively against mages. I couldn’t tolerate a healer who was bad offensively AND defensively. He last saw action around chapter 18-ish.
Framme - Jean’s situation, but worse. I liked her more as a character so I tried to use her for longer than I should have, but she was statistically even WORSE than Jean and hit the bench around chapter 16-ish.
Goldmary - the last cut to my army, I benched her after chapter 23. She’s got good defense and did decently as an Ike user, but she had meh strength and literally hadn’t gained speed since she joined. So while she was fast when she joined, she was SLOW when she was benched. Plus as a primarily sword-user, her meh strength wasn’t enough to do good damage. Alfred and Timerra are better Ike users & Kagetsu, Diamant, and Alear are WAY better sword users.
Vander - he’s helpful early on, but giving him kills was just a waste of EXP. By the time he actually can gain decent EXP he’s super outclassed.
Amber - he was decent enough, but I couldn’t really justify keeping him AND Alfred and Louis, both of whom were performing better. By the time I could spend my money/resources to potentially promote or reclass him, it was too late.
Lapis - she’s helpful when you first get her, and maybe worth it if she gets several really good levels? All I know is Kagetsu immediately invalidated her. I could have made her a Hero, but by the time I turned my attention to her, I got Goldmary, who also showed her up.
Jade - I tried to use Jade after realizing that Louis could be broken, but even after investing several levels and chapters into her, she was a disappointment. When I realized that Alfred (who was barely higher leveled than her) had better defense and HP and strength than her (despite her being a GENERAL), I benched her.
Bunet - after his debut, I compared his stats to Louis and Jade, and found him lacking. He was overall worse than both of them, so he never saw use.
Saphir - her stats were decent, but not great. She was basically on par with Boucheron. Definitely not worth using both of them. Since I’d spent a lot of time on and was invested in him, I kept him and benched her.
Lindon - underwhelming and I had plenty of mages/healers I was attached to by this point, so I never used him.

Chapter 15 Part 1: More Reclassing, and then we head to Jehana
Ross has been a pirate long enough. It's time to reclass him using the weird reclass item.
Tumblr media
His options are Warrior and Berserker. I don't think he really needs bows (especially since he would start at E rank), and being able to walk on mountains and water is sometimes handy. Most importantly, Berserkers get a flat +15 crit bonus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah! Go Ross!
Tumblr media
Also, while I was looking at axes to give him for the next map, I realized something that I had overlooked in previous posts. There are actually 2 different kinds of anti-sword axes. I think I've been referring to all of them as "Swordreavers" up until now, but there is actually a "Swordreaver", and also a "Swordslayer". (In Japanese, a "Sword Buster" and a "Sword Killer".)
They're both C level axes with 11 might, 13 weight and 5 crit, but the Swordslayer has 80 hit and deals effective damage to sword-based foot soldiers like Mercenaries, while the Swordreaver has only 65 hit and doesn't do effective damage. The Swordslayer also has more uses, so it's overall just better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BEHOLD! THE LIGHT OF RAUSTEN SHINES EVER MORE RADIANTLY!
Tumblr media
L'Arachel can become a Valkyria, or a Mageknight. They're very similar stat-wise, and they both have horses. The big difference is that Mageknight gives her C-rank Anima tomes, and the Valkyria gives her D-rank Light tomes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went with Mageknight. She's still going to be doing more staffing than attacking, so the tome type isn't super important, but Fire tomes are cheaper than Lightning tomes, and have more uses, so I decided to go with Anima. She also starts at a higher rank with Anima, so if she wants access to more powerful tomes later, it will be easier to get her there.
Like, she can already use Elfire off the bat if she wants to. And if she can get just one more rank, then she could potentially use Bolting. The Anima tomes also tend to be about 2 weight lighter than the equivalent Light tomes, and L'Arachel doesn't have great con, even after promotion.
I dunno. It doesn't really matter much either way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I looked around for someone to give the Angelic Robe to, and I realized that, among units who see a lot of combat and get hit a lot, Vanessa had pretty low max HP, so I gave it to her.
Tumblr media
"We move on Jehana immediately. Grado's army is already there laying siege, and we don't have a moment to waste. I know that everyone is tired, and I'm sorry for not being able to give you all more time to rest, but this is the situation we have been forced to deal with."
Ephraim turned and walked away from his officers. Vanessa could see the worry in his face, and she saw the fatigue in the faces around her. "This will be tough for me to break to the rear guard pegasus knights, even if they didn't see a lot of direct combat. I guess I better get it over with," she thought.
While she didn't intend to delay her duties, she found herself thinking, "I have another conversation that I shouldn't put off either..."
Vanessa knew Lute would be nearby somewhere, so before she gave her orders to the head of the pegasus rear guard, she went in search of her. Unlike Vanessa, Lute wasn't any sort of officer, so she hadn't been at the meeting just now, but she usually ended up hanging around the pegasus, wyverns, or horses after battle.
"Not an officer, that's one way to put it!" Vanessa thought. After all, Lute wasn't even a proper soldier. If anything she was closer to a mercenary, not that that label really applied either. "It's funny," Vanessa thought, "if it weren't for how desperate and by-the-skin-of-our-teeth this whole war has been, both under princess Eirika and now under prince Ephraim, I doubt either of them would have let Lute tag along with us. And then no one would have ever known what a talented mage she is!"
That's what Lute was, Vanessa decided, not a soldier, not a mercenary, a tag-along! She's a totally new category of her own!
Vanessa laughed and thought of when Lute and Artur had first had formal introductions among Eirika's small force. Vanessa remembered the pained face Seth made when he thanked Artur and Lute for their help and introduced himself and Eirika, and then Lute launched into a five minute analysis of the monsters they had seen before Artur finally interrupted and gave his and Lute's names in return. Vanessa had been the one to run into Lute and bring her along to fight the monsters, and she remembered being worried at the time that she was going to get in trouble with Seth!
"Ironically, I'm probably the person who would have been most opposed to a totally inexperienced, non-soldier like her joining us under normal circumstances," Vanessa thought and frowned. "Everyone's right, I do have a stick up my...Well, hold on. Moulder was just telling me not to be so hard on myself." She breathed deeply and tried to relax.
"I'm glad that we didn't meet under 'normal' circumstances though. I'm glad I got the chance to know Lute. I like her a lot!"
Vanessa felt herself smiling and stopped walking. Wait, why did it feel so good to admit to that anyway?
As if to test herself, she whispered quietly, "I like Lute a lot. I enjoy spending time with her!"
"Are you talking about your wyvern?" a voice suddenly spoke up from behind.
Vanessa jumped! It was Lute!
"Stones! You scared me! Why are you standing right behind me?"
Lute flinched slightly. Vanessa suddenly panicked, "Oh no, did I seem angry again?" she thought.
She spoke quickly, "I'm not angry. Actually, this is perfect, I was just looking for you."
"I was looking for you," Lute spoke quickly. "I'm sorry that I got you in trouble, but I talked with Coulder and he said that you were my friend. Are you my friend, or are you angry with me?"
Vanessa paused for a moment to figure out what Lute was saying. "Right," she thought, "I asked why she was behind me, so she told me why. And she talked to Moulder, ok, yeah I knew about that already."
Vanessa took a look at Lute's face. She had her usual, fairly blank expression, and she seemed to be waiting for Vanessa's response. Vanessa also noticed that Lute was carrying a book with her, and that she held it tight to her side, with one arm wrapped tensely around it. She tapped the book with the fingers of her other hand.
"Lute, I was never angry at you to begin with. I tried to tell you that, but I guess I didn't communicate it clearly enough. I'm sorry about that."
Lute was still silent and her face didn't change, but Vanessa noticed that her shoulders relaxed a little, and her grip on the book loosened slightly.
"Are we friends?" Lute asked.
Vanessa smiled, "Yes, definitely! I hope so! I like talking with you, Lute!"
Lute smiled slightly.
"Do you like talking with me?" Vanessa asked.
"Yes. And I like watching you ride your pegasus, or your wyvern. You fly very well, and you look very impressive."
Lute looked at Vanessa's face to see how she would react. It was a compliment, so it should be ok, right? "I don't think I've overstepped any bounds, and I don't think it could be misinterpreted in a negative way..." she thought to herself. "And it's true too!"
Vanessa looked down slightly and laughed. "Uh, thank you. I appreciate the compliment. You're magic is very impressive too."
"She liked the compliment," Lute thought. "And she said she is my friend!"
Lute suddenly felt light on her feet. She was happy about this! Vanessa wasn't angry! She wanted to be friends!
"I'm just glad we got that all cleared up," Vanessa said, looking down at Lute's face with a smile. "And I'm sorry, but I really have to run and tell prince Ephraim's orders to the pegasus rear guard. You know that we're marching out right away, right?"
Lute nodded.
"If I'm not flying front spot the whole time, maybe we can march together!" Vanessa said brightly.
Lute nodded again. "Can I watch you talk to the pegasus rear guard?"
"Watch? Um...sure. But why?"
Lute couldn't think of how to answer the question properly, so she just answered, "It seems interesting. I want to make observations."
"Alright, well come along then. I need to hurry." And with that, Vanessa walked quickly off with the much shorter Lute half-walking, half-jogging behind her.
"Knowing of his sister's dangerous situation, Ephraim moves his army towards Jehana immediately, without waiting for aid from the Frelian army behind them."
This is at least the second or third time that the game script has referred to the fact that Ephraim / Eirika are being backed up by Frelia's army and/or mercenaries. Sacred Stones also has a pretty small cast by GBA FE standards, so imagine if this game had done the Shadow Dragon thing and it would start giving you randomly named Frelian units as replacements if you got too many of your own units killed...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"There's Jehana... It's already been destroyed."
Seth also shows up to warn us, the player, about the dangers of sand for horses.
"If the ground be grains, leave behind the reins." --Some Fire Emblem very smart guy, probably
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seth also warns Ephraim to be, like, careful or something, but Ephraim is all, "We just gotta rush in and beat up everyone and save Eirika. I got this!"
Tumblr media
Lyon shows up and checks in with Caellach. (He notably does not check in with Valter, because who in their right mind would want to talk to that creep?)
At first, Caellach is stumbling over his words a bit, and Lyon tells him something like, "Don't worry about the polite speech. You were promoted from a mercenary to a general because of your actual talent in combat."
Japanese has polite speech that requires different conjugations of verbs, and sometimes different word usage. The idea behind this exchange is that Caellach is a salt-of-the-earth guy who has spent his career amongst rough characters, so he's not used to the type of speech that would normally be expected when addressing royalty like Lyon.
Just as a quick, far-from-comprehensive example, the basic word for go is "iku". It can transformed into "ikimasu" for more polite speech, but then you also need to consider who is going in very formal situations. If it is you, or someone in your group, you might use the humble word "mairimasu". But if it is someone you are talking to, or someone in their group that you want to linguistically raise up to show respect, you might use "irasshaimasu" or "ikaremasu".
And there are many more examples like this, so it is actually rather complicated to use proper formal, polite speech in Japanese.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After being told to relax, Caellach suddenly asks Lyon if he's really ok with them going after Eirika since he thought that Eirika was an old friend of Lyon's.
Lyon responds that Eirika is a "very important person" to him.
Lyon asks Caellach if he had anyone he was close to, and Caellach mentions a fellow mercenary from his mercenary days named Joshua.
Yeah, that Joshua. The one I got killed when I forgot to have him use a vulnerary.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the team this time. Even though I just promoted her, I'm leaving L'Arachel behind because horse.
I am however, bringing Lute despite horse because Lute.
I decide to bring Gerik because he has bows and this map has a bunch of fliers, so I was thinking it might be relevant.
And the last horse I bring is Franz because I want someone with good defense to take lots of hits in the south of the map.
I choose not to bring Rennac, which may be surprising to anyone familiar with this map, since bringing a thief or a rogue makes getting the treasures hidden in the sand faster. But the thing is, once you wipe out the reinforcements on this map, you have all the time in the world to find the treasures in the sand, so you don't actually need a thief or rogue.
Tumblr media
I could have brought this guy too. Since Knoll is a mage, he doesn't lose movement on the sand. But the thing is, since I'm not bringing Rennac, I can't get the promotion item on this map that Knoll needs. There is a universal promotion item on this map, but I want to give that to Cormag.
Knoll is not really that useful usually until he promotes, so I might just hold off on deploying him until during or after chapter 19 when there is a secret shop where I should be able to buy a guiding ring.

now that im at endgame i want to quickly run through my team and what i learned about awakening luna playing it again after seven or so years
what i learned:
i used WAY too many units. nice as it was to have a full second gen trip the late game it was not really feasible without a lot of grinding
its generally better to play aggressive than defensive on maps, even if it means you're not using pair up so you have better action economy. chapter 4 and chapter 9 were really tough until i went all out with the aggression.
myrmidon might actually be good in Luna bc avo+10 becomes really really good when it's cancelling out a whole bunch of hit+10s. this does not fix lon'qu's bulk issues.
map skirmishes blocking useful shops are the fucking devil and not something you can do anything about other than wait until you hit endgame. really annoying feature
DLC doesn't scale to game difficulty!! that's fun
weapon forging is my new best friend
van/ven is still ABSOLUTELY broken and Owain hard carried my team through several maps
and my thoughts on my team!!
Robin - i actually think i fucked up by second sealing at twenty instead of promoting? armsthrift is nice and i wanted it for Morgan's inheritance but robin fell off really really hard by the midgame and i never got him back so it would have been nice to have rally spectrum available when that happened. ultimately that was ok for me bc unlike the luna guides will tell you i was not solely relying on robin for the front lines but oof he fell off harder than Fred
Chrom - Chrom is Chrom. not much to say there. he didn't get to see a lot of combat early which kind of worked out in my favour bc it meant he was still in lord in chapter 12 and gave Sumia some HUGE effective dual strikes with his rapier. it might actually be worth delaying his first class change to get that?? as usual i went archer -> bow knight and he was great in both. rally skill is actually really good to have on a non-combat unit in later maps where everything has so much speed and avo, it definitely made the difference for Nah a couple of times
Sumia - MVP. oh my god she was so good. i had to grind Olivia anyway so i ran her through great knight and although i don't want her to see any enemy phase combat at this point it has been really helpful to have her fly in, kill something annoying with a luna proc and fly out again to physic or rescue. rally speed has been really helpful as well! i had to do a little hand holding with her in chapter two but early investment pays off so well and i can't think of another unit who can transition from frontliner to support as well as she can. love her.
Fred - when people say awakening luna is unplayable without using Fred are they like. are they just bad at the game? don't get me wrong he was fine but imo the Fred carry/Robin carry meta really only is true until chapter 3 which is... not long, and definitely not long enough for Fred to have the kind of reverence he has in Luna meta. idk. he was fine! i had to finagle a bit to get him and Olivia married which was a pain but then it was nice being able to give Olivia extra move via pairup in the late game.
Olivia - i normally bench her after getting the kids when i play hard bc galeforce is just better than dancing and she becomes a liability with the ambush reinforcements so it was kind of novel to still be deploying her in the valm arc, even though that was mostly just to dance Sumia so i had two actions worth of healing. i had to do a LOT of grinding with DLC to get her galeforce for inheritance which was pretty painful and her stats were never that good. dance utility for my healer has been pretty nice!
Sully - i probably shouldn't have used her and shouldn't have given her the resources that normally go to wyvern Panne but i LIKE her and she did really really well in chapter 12 after she promoted and got lance access back. Gaius s support is solid but those first few levels before reclassing were really difficult because her bases are just so low. if awakening luna slightly bumped up everyone's bases it would be a joy to play.
Panne - it says a lot about how good wyvern Panne is that i brought her back in to the team way too late and she not only kept up but then outperformed Sully who'd had so much more investment. brokenly good unit and by the time i got Yarne she had late game worthy stats. the lack of galeforce kind of hurts as does her weapon ranks - she was stuck using bronze axes for so, so long - but yeah. good unit. believe the hype.
Nowi - i have really mixed feelings about Nowi's performance because it was just. so painful. her bases do not get bumped enough and at the start everything was doubling her and her awful 18HP. speed issues continued for a long long time but she eventually kind of pulled it together. a bit. not sure I'll do this again
Vaike and Lon'qu - mostly they were used to produce Nah and Yarne respectively but they were ok!! really solid backpacks. Vaike's stats were toilet tier for a long long time but he got there eventually. lon'qu loved dual striking for panne so much it got her in trouble a couple of times. it's good that they can support each other as well!
Gregor and Miriel - i put so much into Miriel lmao i love her. woteva. she was fine, bulk and survivability issues but that's pretty standard for Miriel. i also had trouble with her critting things i did not want critted. Gregor got so little investment i actually felt kind of bad for him. i promoted him after like... one or two levels worth of dual striking experience but i probably should've done it sooner
Lissa and Libra - early promotion to get Lissa tomefaire (mostly from rescue staff abuse) was worth it! really solid performance from both of them and Lissa had decent offenses on her galeforce grind. i wish I'd used Libra as a frontliner more but ultimately Lissa needed more exp than him and that's how it worked out, but it felt like a missed opportunity bc Libra in luna is really, really good.
Sumia!Lucina - i was worried about her stats on recruitment but she's been really really good and had some fantastic survivability thanks to her aether procs. great unit, does everything she needs to. i ran her through great lord for rfk + rapier access and that worked pretty well! her final class was between bow knight and paladin but surprisingly paladin has better overall stats and she didn't desperately want anything from bow knight. i don't think i would want to do anything dramatically different with her
Chrom!Cynthia - BEAST. BEAST. BEAST. ALL OVER THE SHOP
Libra!Owain - my only van/ven build and boy did he do good work with it. kind of ruined a couple of maps when the computer abandoned all reason and prioritised attacking him bc he was a staff unit which was a pain but ultimately pretty recoverable. van/ven is good! van/ven owain is good!!
Gaius!Kjelle - sadly she became mostly just a pair up bot for Owain. i never quite got her offences up to scratch to get her galeforce which was a real shame. Owain appreciated the stats and a partner with flight though
Frederick!Inigo - ugh. my only real disappointment in this run. speed!! speed!!! where is his fucking speed!!!! giving him galeforce was nice and all but he can't use it very well if he can't fucking double!!!! Inigo!!!! what's going on there!!!!!! i think Fred passed down dual guard+ which is fine but ultimately inigo would've been better with either luna (the lack of offensive procs really started to hurt him) or deliverer for extra movement for Cynthia. kind of pain to level and promote. he relied on his s support with Cynthia a LOT.
Vaike!Nah - might have been a little too ambitious to want to run her through merc and hero before bringing her back to manakete but those Vaike offenses ended up really paying off. very very slow to start cooking but so good once she got going. sightly too tanky? enemies tended to avoid her on EP which wasn't helpful. her sol proc rates also need some work but overall a really solid unit and one i might bring back to hard mode or use in luna again.
Lon'qu!Yarne - I'm glad i made the decision to bring Panne back to avoid Lon'qu/Lissa. listen. i have not asked Yarne to do too much but he has done it so well and has probably contributed the most in battles for the least exp. bless him! bless his name!!! i wish Panne gave him a better class set. he could have been everything.... that said, even if my original plan of barbarian -> beserker -> griffon didn't work out due to lack of EXP he still did really well and sat in an unpromoted class until chapter 25 when i took pity on him and went to a DLC map. really solid guy.
Gregor!Laurent - i had such plans for a strong and bulky nostank with armsthrift and then it just... never happened. im sorry Laurent. i don't think i ever gave Gregor enough levels to make that work. he did ok promoting to dark knight instead of sorc to be Morgan's pair up bot but i kind of wish I'd managed to get him going. i have two forged Nosferatu in my convoy that i now can't use. whoops
Lucina! Morgan - less than 25 str or mag as a level 10 dark flier was not it. great crits, great aether procs but what the hell happened to her offensive stats. bizarre. probably not unfixable but she's going to close out the game as a rally spectrum bot. rip
Cynthia got the most MVP awards but Owain was just so, so good and Lucina did everything i needed her to. Sumia!!! she's so good!!!!! anyway i had a lot of fun with this run once i found my feet with it and i... honestly will probably finish it and immediately start another one lmao. it was fun!!!!

And that concludes Verdant Wind maddening mode/classic/no NG+ We did it! Gold screen!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[The only reason this took 24 turns is that I spent 10 full turns parked on a stronghold trying to make Nemesis break his sword bc I thought it would be funny. He did, and it was. Ingrid final MVP yet again - i now have final MVP screens for her from every route but CF lol]
Once I got through the first few two chapters, this was significantly less challenging than I had expected. The final map was just as hard as AM, which is to say, not hard.
Run summary and some final thoughts (including some VW vs Silver Snow ~discourse~) below the cut <3
Making everyone fight their zombies was fun, and I did manage to get some crit/crest/signature art combos, too! Took clips of it, I'll put them together someday probably. The only hard part was wasting so much time trying to get people in the right position to fight their zombies at all (looking at you, Mercedes).
Fraldarius vs Fraldarius was a sight to behold, tbh. They both activated their crests almost every attack but also both consistently either dodged or proc'd aegis - even survived a crit through aegis - so it took four rounds of combat. (And NO, no one else was allowed to help. This was Felix's fight and his alone, ok.) Being a melodramatic bastard in combat must run in the family. I wrote a fic about it lol.
Units, classes, items:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Felix actually used a sword for most of this battle, I just happened to have the bow equipped when I took the screenshot. Also, they didn't all actually use their relics for the majority of the battle. Mostly silver weapons or the legendary forged ones. ALSO also, Leonie is actually a sniper, I had to restart bc I forgot I had reclassed her during some auxiliary battles.
I feel like I finally understand firsthand why crests make the nobility lol Leonie was the only person on the team without a crest, and I actively missed it. Constantly disappointed by the lack of a fun little glowing shape smh
Final pairings:
m!Byleth/Linhardt
Claude/Marianne
Hilda/Balthus
Lysithea/Cyril
Leonie/Seteth
Catherine/Shamir
Felix/Annette
Mercedes/Sylvain
Ingrid/Yuri
Dorothea/Petra (no, I didn't use either of them for a single battle, I just made them eat lunch together until they fell in love ok thank u bye)
Overall MVP: It was surprisingly even across the board, but ultimately Annette took it, winning by two over Sylvain and Lysithea, who were tied.
Highlight: Gronder Field, where I successfully made Edelgard kill Dimitri so I wouldn't have to.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON STORY + SILVER SNOW COMPARISONS: (warning you now, this is really long)
Verdant Wind's story actually falls flat sometimes, man. Things like Edelgard’s death scene stick out like a sore thumb, they so obviously belong to a different story (*cough cough* silver snow). What if instead, we got some final dialogue between her and Claude where he says he could have worked with her? He explicitly said earlier that he thinks they actually have similar goals.
(It also would have made the TWSITD reveal more interesting ["Edelgard, bestie, rethink this. We both want to free people from prejudice and discrimination, we can work together." "Surprise, bitch, I wasn't doing this on my own, the whole thing was manufactured by these secret baddies." "Girl help, I've been underestimating the depth of the secrets of this world."])
Idk, I still like it but there's something to be said about how much was taken from Silver Snow and vice versa and where they REALLY belong. When I finally played Silver Snow, after having already played VW, I was like "ohhhhhhh this makes sense now" about so many things. I'm actually of the opinion that VW is reusing story from Silver Snow more than the other way around. In fact, think Nemesis would have been an appropriate penultimate boss for Silver Snow (penultimate bc lets be honest, hes not designed like a final boss. I literally fucked around and made him lose his battalion and break his sword, just for fun. He's just a normal map boss. Kinda boring.).
What they SHOULD have done is turned Thales into a final boss for Claude so that TWSITD actually do feel like the ultimate baddies theyre supposed to be. He could even turn himself into a big cool monster like Edelgard does in AM!!
And I do love the final boss in Silver Snow, I think it's what really makes the story hit. You sided with the church specifically to save Rhea from Edelgard, only to end up having to fight her anyway! You fight the people who want nothing more than to kill Rhea, only to have to kill her yourself! You finally learn the truth of the destruction of the Nabateans, only to have to pit them against each other! Gorgeous!!!!
So heres my ultimate proposal for Silver Snow: Claude helps draw troops away from the great bridge of myrrdin, as is canon. You actually do try to help Dimitri at Gronder, but you get there too late to save him. You defeat the empire, then they give you the info about TWSITD. You defeat Nemesis. Seiros goes berserk, and you fight her as the real final boss.
For Verdant Wind: All the same, except Thales is the actual final boss. The End.
Okay that's all thanks for reading love you bye xoxo

Entry 41: Child Soldier and Drug Dealer
Paralogue 6: Herbal Remedy
Kaze’s daughter, Midori, leaves her deeprealm to bring him a rare herb. Along the way, she runs into a bandit mugging a man. The bandit threatens to kill her and Kaze saves her. Kaze comments that Midori’s growing like a beanstalk and she says that she’s an adult now, because the localization team really wants to remove the fact that this is a game about child soldiers and teenage brides.
Midori realizes that the man she saved somehow stole her herbs and Midori runs to get them back. She runs into Candace, a treasure hunter who runs off with the herbs. We then send in our entire army to murder this woman for stealing from a child. To be fair, the herbs do raise all stats by one, but still. An entire army is overkill.
This chapter is actually pretty cool. You have to defeat Candace as she flees through a twisting forest and can use Dragon Veins to make shortcuts to cut her off. Of course, it is also exploitable; Candace only wields a bow, so I was able to pin her against a wall and hold her there while I killed all of the other enemies for that sweet sweet EXP. Candace is actually a capturable boss, one with an interesting bit of trivia: Candace has a different body type from most Fates characters, which is cool, but also it means she can’t be reclassed because they didn’t add in overweight models for any other class.
After the battle, Kaze scolds Midori for endangering herself. It’s kinda sweet seeing Kaze worry about his kid. Midori explains that she wants the herbs so she can grow stronger and return to the real world. Kaze lets her come with and join him in marching through enemy territory to assassinate an evil king, like any overprotective father would.
Midori
Kaze’s naive pharmacist daughter. Her design is okay, but goddamn is she young. Her personal skill boosts the activation of Luck based skills. The fact that Kana is also a naive small child who doesn’t like being in the baby dimension also kinda makes her feel irrelevant.
Support: Kaze/Midori
C: Midori concocts a new energy drink that smells and looks poisonous. Kaze drinks it, despite it being untested, to avoid upsetting his daughter.
B: Kaze offers to take Midori to look for herbs, but she decides to go alone because she doesn't want to waste his time.
A: Kaze apologizes for being a deadbeat. Midori says she just wants to spend time with him.
Review: Overall, a very disconnected Support. Kaze drinking poison to spare his daughter’s feelings is nice and Midori worrying her father hates her is a gut punch, but neither of these things are followed up on very well.
Support: Midori/Mother
C: Midori makes her mother ointment.
B: Midori yells at some other kids so they don't wander into a forest and gets yelled out for being annoying. She mopes that people treat her like the small child she is.
A: The kids Mirodri yelled at apologize because their mothers yelled at them. Midori decides that because she's reached the maturity of a twelve-year-old babysitter she counts as an adult.
Review: A bit bland. Also, why are their other children for her to chaperone? This game takes place in an active war zone!
Support: Corrin/Midori
C: Midori asks Corrin to help her collect herbs because she always gets lost in the woods.
B: Corrin and Midori look for herbs; Midori wanders off and Corrin tells her to carve Xs into trees.
A: Corrin tries putting a leash on Midori so she doesn't get lost. Also they say it doesn't matter that Midori gets lost in the woods because it gives her a reason to hang out with her friend Corrin.
Review: Overall this one is fairly mediocre. Corrin tripping Midori would work if it was shown, but the dialogue nature of Supports kills any slapstick.
Support: Moron/Midori
C: Corrin is feeling tired, so Midori gives him drugs. They don't work.
B: Midori makes Corrin more drugs that don't work. Midori promises to make Corrin feel better.
A: Corrin, after taking a nap, feels better. Corrin tells Midori that even though nothing she did affected anything her smiling made him recover faster.
S: Corrin tells Midori she needs to find someone to take care of her like she takes care of others. Midori chooses Corrin.
Review: I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but I just don’t find Midori to be that interesting of a character.

💫 + flavio!! :3c I feel like I don't know anything abt him so u can go off if u want!!!
OKAY I FINALLY HAVE TIME TO GET TO THIS curse finals coming up lmao
I am ALWAYS down to talk about Flavio like I will GLADLY tell you everything about him.
Tumblr media
Content Warnings: Angst, Mentions of gaslighting, Spoilers for EO2U
General Information
Flavio is from the JRPG Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight. He is the childhood friend and best friend of the Protagonist. Raised by the Midgard Library Association’s orphanage, he eventually becomes an investigation team member of the Midgard Library and is sent to High Lagaard with the Protagonist to complete a mission (to escort the princess of Caledonia, Arianna, to ritual grounds located in High Lagaard). As someone of the Survivalist class, he uses bows as his primary weapon of choice. He’s extremely speedy and will almost always make the first move in a fight. He’s primarily a backline fighter, but he’s flexible enough to fight on the frontlines as well. If you do choose to reclass him, he fits very well in the following classes: Gunner and Hexer.
Lore Information
Flavio was orphaned at a young age; young enough to never remember who his parents were. He was taken in by the Midgard Library Association and raised by their orphanage. There, he meets the Protagonist of the game since they became roommates. As a child, he was a bit of a trouble maker, which would lead him to getting scolded often. This would only get worse after an incident where the Protagonist transforms for the first time in order to save both him and Arianna from monsters. The day that this happened is a huge sore spot (and a possible source of trauma) for Flavio as the three children were simply playing Explorers out in the woods that day. Neither Arianna or the Protagonist remember this happening, with only Flavio remembering. When he tried to tell the adults of the Midgard Library and the orphanage what happened, he would be immediately shut down and called a liar. However, Flavio would continue to insist on what he saw was real, earning him the nickname “Fibber Flavio”. This nickname would be used whenever he mentioned the incident to shame him into eventually never speaking of it again. This was done intentionally by the Midgard Library, as they did not want word of the Protagonist’s power to spread. When he eventually grows older and becomes an explorer as a part of an investigation team alongside the Protagonist, he’s the only one to immediately recognize Arianna when they meet up with her in High Lagaard. Even though the Protagonist is Flavio’s best friend, he struggles with feels of jealousy and inferiority towards him, as the Protagonist was the stronger, more decisive, and kinder of the two. "Back at the orphanage, we were always together, and roommates as far as back as I can remember. You were my best friend. But even then... I was so jealous of you. You were stronger than me, more decisive, always kind even though I lied all the time... You always had the adults' praise. I was proud to be your friend, but ashamed too. We grew up at the same orphanage, so how did we turn out so different?" (Flavio to the Protagonist). Because they are friends, Flavio tells the Protagonist this because the right thing to do it to “come clean” about how he felt.
Personality
“Flavio is always cheerful, upbeat and the life of the guild. He is very kind to others and to his peers and is always willing to give a helping hand to others, even strangers. However, he is straightforward and keeps the members of the guild in check. He tends to be quite the apprehensive character at times and is the one everyone in the party seems to tease often. He often nitpicks about things that aren't normal and when he was younger, he became frustrated and stupified by things he didn't understand or weren't normal. Because of his preference for the ordinary, he's often labeled as the "straight man" of the group; in the Japanese version he is labeled as the "tsukkomi" which means the same thing. Ironically, he hates being called or treated as such.“ (Copied from his wiki page). To add on to this, when he is teased, he tends to get very flustered. Even though he is considered the “straighforward” one, he can often get dragged into his friend’s antics before snapping out of it, such as when the guild discusses their favorite games in the middle of a fight with monsters. Also, may I note that even though he’s labeled as the “straight man”, trust me he is anything but straight. yes I know that’s in reference to his character archetype lemme have my joke He’s also extremely expressive!
  Fun Facts and Headcanons!
He is afraid of insects and deathly afraid of spiders
He’s good at cooking
He went through a few redesigns because some members on the game’s staff said he wasn't “handsome enough”
He has a ridiculous spice tolerance and loves spicy food
He’s allergic to pollen and “sneezes like a kitten” (according to Chloe)
I personally headcanon him as pan!
Another headcanon of mine is that his frustration as a child about things he didn’t understand is what caused him to be a bit of a troublemaker and that for a big part of his childhood, he was extremely bitter due to how the Midgard Library treated him
Basically he’s a former delinquent with a heart of gold and has always been a cinnamon roll, a hill I will die on
He’s a worrywart and the Mom Friend of the group
My ship name with him ”My Aim is Set” is based on one of his in-game quotes
I love him

Happy Reading, T~
Level 9
You were here, it was nine, and you were starting to get annoyed. Had you been played? Were you about to be ambushed? Jumped? Hacked? As your mind raced nearly a thousand pop up windows flooded your chat screen as you were thrown into a brand new group chat, this one titled “Team Azuchi.” Interesting.
4myLord → Seriously, though, how do you not know where they are? You just met her last night. This is horribly rude.
OneEyedDrag0n → Nope, see? I remembered her username! She’s in the group chat! @WildCyt0m3try you are in the group chat right. /;3;/ Please tell me you’re in the group chat!
Present, though, I’m not super sure where you are? You said 9 sharp but never specified where... ← WildCyt0m3try
Betrayal_is_real04  → He’s as helpful as ever I see.
Your answer was equally unhelpful… ( - . - )  ← WildCyt0m3try
D3vilK1ng  → I like her @OneEyedDrag0n, she’s got spunk.
OneEyedDrag0n  → Right! Almost beat me in that tournament too!
EdoPorcupine5661 → Oh? No surprise there.
OneEyedDrag0n → Hey! I resent that statement
Betrayal_is_real04 → You resent most of his statements.
EdoPorcupine5661 → Is everyone here now? Except for @WildCyt0m3try?
4myLord → No. We’re missing @B00kOfLife7. You can find us near the South gate @WildCyt0m3try.
Thx! I see you now! ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → Does it matter? Can we start without him? He’s probably reading and forgot we were supposed to meet.
4myLord → We cannot!
B00kOfLife7 → We cannot what?
EdoPorcupine5661 → Nevermind…
D3vilK1ing → Glad you could join us, shall we head out now that everyone’s gathered?
In a matter of moments, your screen warped, and your character and her new teammates were whisked off towards the southern dessert. Excitement bubbled up inside of you, this was your chance to shine. Sure, you barely knew these people, but if they fought anything like OneEyedDrag0n had, you didn’t want to look incompetent. Fortunately, the battle conditions were a perfect way to showcase your stats.
The dessert terrain made it nearly impossible for anyone on foot to move, and cavalry or armored units had almost no chance at advancing more than a single space at a time. You, on the other hand, were a flier, meaning terrain that diminished that particular stat didn’t apply to you. Giving you the range to quickly traverse the battlefield and assist your allies. Which is precisely what you planned to do.
Everyone had spawned in one of two groups; truly, the game seemed to be out to get you. Both of the warlocks had been pushed together in the back corner of the map with the sniper. Everyone else in your party was in the top corner with you. Meaning all of your long-range fighters were too far away to provide any sort of backup to the poor guy on a horse and your swords.
So...this is unfortunate ← WildCyt0m3try
OneEyedDrag0n → We’ve honestly gotten worse, this ain't too bad
You’ve got to be kidding ← WildCyt0m3try
4myLord → We wish. We’ll have time for that story later. @B00kOfLife got a plan yet?
B00kOfLife → @D3vilK1ng and @Betrayal_is_real04, please proceed towards the center of the field to become the central targets.
B00kOfLife → @EdoPorcupine5661 and I will cover the exit point down here to the south so bandits cannot escape.
B00kOfLife → @OneEyedDrag0n, please do your best to cover @4myLord since he doesn’t have a large range of movement. Fend off enemies as you make your way toward the center of the field.
B00kOfLife → @WildCyt0m3try, please make quick work of the chests around the field then chase down any enemies that attempt to flee. You are quite capable of fending them off on your own, I presume?
Everything but archers, though, I’m usually good with dodging, and I’ve got plenty of herbs on standby jic. ← WildCyt0m3try
B00kOfLife ← Wonderful. Message if something should go wrong. Good luck.
With the plan out, the chat went silent. This was nothing like your other team, no microphones were used for in battle communication, not a single word was typed unless something was direly wrong. You had been provided exactly 3 chest keys to do your job, but you knew that at least three of these bandits had keys of their own, so you shouldn’t have to dip into your stock unless someone called you for backup.
Just as OneEyedDrag0n had stated last night, everyone here was a capable fighter. The plan was being executed beautifully, and you marveled at how the CPU’s seemed to go down one after the other. It was like the computer wasn’t even paying attention to the stats anymore. Why would you go after an enemy that you only had a 16% chance of doing 4 damage to when they had a 98% chance of doing 36 damage twice? It didn’t make any sense. You'd take what you were given, though.
In half an hour, all of the chests were successfully looted, the enemy had been routed, and EdoPorcupine5661 was named the MVP. You’d never seen that before, granted you hadn’t been playing that long, but it was rare for a bowed unit to take accolades like that. Being a ranged unit seemed to have its perks on terrane like this, you supposed. Prize money was divided, and the weapons and armor were awarded based on participation and usability. It didn’t make much sense to give something to someone who couldn’t make use of it. After thanking them for letting you play with them, you were about to log off and head to bed when you got a private message.
EdoPorcupine5661 → OneEyedDrag0n said you were in the market for a bow.
I am. Not sure where I’d find one this late in my game, though, sort of hard to reclass and start over.  ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → You fought well, and you aren’t completely annoying, so here, it was part of my loot today.
Are you sure? That’s a really nice bow! ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → It is, which is why you’d be stupid not to take it. I’ve already got one. So here.
Thanks! UwU You’re the best! Now I’ve just got to get the skill up so I can use it! ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → If you’re free tomorrow at 5, I can meet you for some quick tips. Don’t need you shooting yours or anyone else’s eye out.
Is that what happened to OneEyedDrag0n? Training accident lol? ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → No. It wasn’t an accident.
Omfg, you didn’t xD ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → I didn’t, but it’s always fun to imagine.
So 5 tomorrow? ← WildCyt0m3try I should be down for that as long as I get off work on time. ← WildCyt0m3try   Are you going to give me any hints about where to meet you, or is that part of this team’s quirks? ← WildCyt0m3try Make the newbie guess where you’re meeting? ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → You know, I was going to tell you, but I’m not feeling quite as generous anymore.
Noooo! Please! I don’t like wandering around like a lost CPU! Someone tried to buy stuff from me today, you know! ← WildCyt0m3try That’s how idle I looked waiting for you goons lol ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → Maybe you should evaluate the face your character is making? It’s not my fault you look like someone who sells cheap spears.
I would not sell cheap spears! Only the highest quality merchandise is sold here! ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → Whatever you say.
I’m glad you’ve come to your senses and decided to agree with me.  ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → Sure, we’ll go with that.
Okay, well, thanks for the bow. I’ll see you tomorrow around 5. I’ve decided I actually need to get some sleep tonight! Work has been a H A U L lately. ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → You don’t need to explain yourself to me. Just go to bed, weirdo.
Roger that, weirdo. ← WildCyt0m3try
EdoPorcupine5661 → That wasn’t a compliment.
Sure it was. Laters~ ← WildCyt0m3try
You smiled as you shut down the console and powered off your television, that had been fun. It was so different from your other team's dynamic, but it added something different to the experience beyond solo playing. Besides, you had totally just scored a kick-ass bow, and a training date tomorrow. You couldn’t wait; if you kept going at this pace, you were sure it’d be enough to push your team to the winning slot next tournament! Real-life prize money here you came!

So, a little while ago I did a “try out less trodden class paths” run of Three Houses. It was a Blue Lions run, since I both wanted to revisit that path for fic writing purposes, and because it was the base house that had the largest number of students I wanted to try out different classes on.
The results, as you can imagine, were mixed.
Caspar made for such a good Swordmaster that I took him to the endgame with me, and while I was surprised by this at first, when I thought about it a little more, it didn’t surprise me nearly as much. Caspar may not have a proficiency in swords, but his growths lend themselves well to sword-wielding classes, especially once you reclass him to a sword-wielding class and you get those modifiers to his growth rates. I had made him a Hero in my Silver Snow run purely because I wanted to get his sword rank high enough to wield the rapier so he could take down the Death Knight in his and Mercedes’s paralogue, and he was good with swords in that one, too. Asides from him, Felix and Mercedes were both excellent Bow Knights, filling different niches--Felix with his high strength and speed hit like a truck, and Mercedes with a magic bow absolutely decimated low res units, and even middling res units as well.
On the other end of the spectrum, while neither Ferdinand, Sylvain, nor Leonie were bad at being Holy Knights, per se, and Ferdinand is one of only two units who I think actually looks good in the Holy Knight armor (suits his personality and aesthetic pretty well, I think), I will likely not class them into Holy Knights again. Ferdinand is fine as a Paladin--plenty of the advanced classes are fine as endgame classes, and Paladin is definitely one of them--or a Wyvern Lord, Leonie is so much better as a Bow Knight, and maybe one day I’ll find a class Sylvain actually excels at, because he’s been kinda meh as a Dark Knight for me (Not as meh as poor Lorenz, though). And nowadays, I’ve had Dorothea as a Gremory, a Mortal Savant, and in this playthrough a Swordmaster, and I don’t think I’m ever going to make her into anything but a Gremory, ever again.
But by far, the two stars of this run were Falcon Knight Marianne and Gremory Ingrid.
Classing Marianne away from a magic-wielding class is, I think, probably not the most unconventional thing I could have done, especially since I sent her down the Pegasus line. I think that with every student unit in this game, there are a couple--sometimes up to three or four--different paths that are optimal to send them down, in different ways. For Marianne, you could make her a Swordmaster or a Paladin, and those classes would suit her pretty well thanks to her magic-based Combat Arts. You could level up her Reason Magic and make her a Gremory.
The master class I think the game pushes you hardest towards with Marianne is Holy Knight. On a purely visuals-based level, she is the only unit in the game besides Ferdinand whom I think the armor in that class looks good on, thanks to her color palette making the armor white with gold accents, and the cape a dark blue, which to be honest is exactly what I think of when I think holy knight. More seriously, given her proficiencies in Faith, Swords, Riding, Flying, and that her budding talent is in Lances, the game is pushing you towards mixed attacker with Marianne, and speaking as someone who made her a Holy Knight in every run she played but this one, Marianne excels as a mixed attacker.
She really feels like the only unit in the whole game that the Holy Knight class was really made for. As I said above, Ferdinand, Sylvain, and Leonie weren’t great at it, and designated healer units that I’ve classed into Holy Knight in the past (aka Linhardt and Mercedes) excelled much more as a Bishop or as a Gremory. Marianne, on the other hand, kicks so much ass as a Holy Knight that it isn’t even funny. Out of all the designated healers, I would say that her spell list is the most attack-oriented, because even Manuela only has two attack Faith spells, while Marianne has three. Marianne is one of only three characters in the base game to get two magic-based Combat Arts (the others being Ingrid and Edelgard), which means that even with less spell charges, she’s not in trouble because she has Soulblade and Frozen Lance to fall back on. Her Crest increases damage output on physical attacks. Also, her bloodline’s Relic, Blutgang, is a magic sword that deals magic-based damage; if that isn’t the devs telling us it’s alright to make Marianne a physical class or a mixed attacker if we want to, I don’t know what is. And five Physic uses isn’t that big of a loss, especially since if you’re doing any recruiting at all Marianne is probably not your only Physic user--hell, if you’re playing as female Byleth, you can get a Physic user for free (And just because I don’t think Sylvain is that great of a Dark Knight doesn’t mean I don’t think the game isn’t pushing him towards that).
With all that said, it’s not hard to see how Falcon Knight is the other master class I think the game is pushing Marianne towards. She has all the proficiencies required to get there with plenty of chapters to spare, and even with her low strength growths, high magic plus Soulblade and Frozen Lance means she’s not without recourse for dealing loads of damage. And in my experience, Marianne’s performance as a Falcon Knight was similar to her performance as a Holy Knight, minus being able to wield magic and plus gaining a ton of speed. She was good. She excelled at this.
Ingrid, on the other hand, I wasn’t as confident about going in. Ingrid, I feel, is being pushed by the game first to become a Falcon Knight, and if not a Falcon Knight, then a Paladin. Her growths favor these classes, and her base speed growths are so high that the massive speed penalty that comes with the Paladin class isn’t likely to affect her too much. Incidentally, Ingrid’s proficiencies are almost identical to Marianne’s; the only difference is that she’s neutral in Faith, rather than proficient. She is very much being pushed towards physical classes, rather than magical classes or mixed attacker classes.
But when you look at it, Ingrid has the potential to become a great mixed attacker. Her base growths in strength and magic are the same. Like Marianne, she learns two magic-based Combat Arts, Hexblade and Frozen Lance, though she gets them much later on. Marianne gets Soulblade at C+ in Swords, and Frozen Lance is your reward for unlocking her budding talent; Ingrid, on the other hand, doesn’t get her magic-based Arts until she’s at A in Swords and Lances, almost as if she’s not intended to be dealing magic-based damage until she’s reached an advanced class (More on that later). Her Reason list is almost identical to Marianne’s--both learn Blizzard, Thoron, and Fimbulvetr, which are all spells with high Critical Hit chances, and Marianne only learns one spell in excess of Ingrid’s list, Cutting Gale. From Faith, Ingrid learns Physic, which is a good utility spell, and Seraphim, the monster-killing spell, which makes me think that Falcon Knights were originally meant to be geared towards killing monsters like they were in Echoes, since Ingrid is the only unit in the game being pushed hard towards this class, and she just happens to learn a spell that’s super-effective against monsters.
So Ingrid does have potential as a magic-wielding unit. Sure, she’s hands down the best unit in the game to make into a Falcon Knight (tried it out on Hilda this time, and let me just say: Falcon Knight!Hilda is Wyvern Lord!Hilda Lite; it’s okay, but it feels like a watered down version of Wyvern Lord!Hilda), but she’s got potential as a mage, too. But I was still a little nervous, because while her base magic growth is the same as her base strength growth, both are on the low side, and just judging from what I’ve heard, it’s rare to get an Ingrid who’s been strength-blessed by the RNG gods. Even with class boosts to her growths, there was still a very real chance she’d get screwed on her magic stats.
As you can see above, she did not get magic-screwed. At all.
Yes, this is after I fed her some magic stat boosters, but do you want to know what it was before I did that? 43. She got to 43 magic all by her lonesome, without any help from any Spirit Dusts or any Premium Magic Herbs, and she was fantastic. She was critting left and right, no one could hit her, she could still double Assassins despite no longer being in a class that boosted her speed growths, and she was overall my biggest, most unexpected success story from this run.
Now, let’s talk DLC.
As most of you probably know, the next wave of DLC coming out--can’t remember if it’s in the free wave or the paid wave--includes several new classes. Do you want to guess what one of them is? If the rumors are true, one of the new classes we’re getting is Dark Flier.
Previously, I mentioned that I really wanted to make Flayn a Dark Flier if I ever got the opportunity. Her proficiency in Faith, budding talent in Reason, and the fact that she comes with high enough skill bases in Lances and Flying to be immediately reclassed to Pegasus Knight makes me think that the pegasus line was the route we were being pushed towards with her, if we decided Bishop or Gremory wasn’t for us (And speaking as someone who’s made Flayn a Falcon Knight three runs running, she’s amazing as a pegasus unit). The fact that she’s such a potent magic user made me wish we’d get Dark Flier as a class, back when we still didn’t know what the future held in terms of DLC.
Well, nowadays, I still want to make Flayn a Dark Flier. Wanting to make her a Dark Flier is probably the biggest reason my first run after the DLC drops isn’t going to be a Crimson Flower run. But seeing how well Marianne does as a flying unit, how well Ingrid does as a magic unit, and just how much potential both have as mixed attackers, I really want to try them both out as Dark Fliers, too.
I just hope the DLC classes don’t require super-rare seals like Dark Mage and Dark Bishop. That would suck.

my brain: you have other things you could be writing that are more important-
me: FUCK you here’s an essay about shit that’s can’t even happen
anyway fuckin uhhhh here’s my ideas about what Fire Emblem: Awakening would be like if it were remade for the switch using Fire Emblem: Three House’s mechanics
oh yeah and spoilers for awakening duh
i’m gonna go over the characters and most stuff first sooooo
[also, likes, dislikes, and closest allies ended up being filled in later after a lot of stuff was already done, it’s probably noticable so i figured i’d say so anyway]
1: Robin
strengths: sword and black magic (because those are the weapons used by Robin’s starting class)
weaknesses: none (because in Awakening Robin can change to literally any class they want)
