Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Currently ongoing polls:/Miao/Cang/Yao/Zang/Chong/Nangong/Kong/Hai/Deng/Kang/Jun/Chun/Gui/Peng

Biography of Liu Hong, Part 2
[Also, this Liu Hong guy probably was not an idiot. From JS066.]
Hong hence advised studying farming mulberry trees, loosened punishment and revoked taxes, yearly employment was a year [?]. The hundred families were fond and pleased with him.
Hong once stood up at night, and heard from atop the walls one who was keeping up the night-watch sigh with considerable bitterness. He thereupon called out to scrutinize him. The soldier's age was past sixty, he was weak and ill, and without a shirt. Hong pitied him, and therefore demoted and punish [his] master. He thereupon gave him a leather robe and also a hat, and moved [him?] to thereby give them [?].
In the old regulations, the swamps within Xian and Fang mountains did not pay attention to the hundred families catching fish. Hong sent down a lesson, saying:
In the rites, the famous mountains and great swamps were not made fiefs, giving together their profits. Now public and private are combined and united, the hundred families have nothing and bury their hands in the earth [?], what is the meaning? Quickly change this law.
Also:
Within the beer houses they say Within Qi [?] Beer, Listening to Affairs Beer, Commonplace Beer. They similarly use fermented rice, yet there are three products of superior and inferior [quality]. Adding charges to unfiltered beer given to the Three Armies is similar in their weakness and fullness [?]. From today do not divide into separate parts.
At the time the Inspector of Yi province, Luo Shang, was defeated by Li Te. He dispatched envoys to announce the urgency and request provisions. Hong circulated a letter to supply and provide. But the provincial office's mainstays and guidelines, due to the transport roads [being] isolated and remote, and the civil and military officials wanting and weary, desired to use Lingling to alone transport 5 000 hu of rice to give to Shang. Hong said:
You Lords have not yet thought about it, that is all. Under Heaven is a single family, this and that are not different. If I today provide for him, then there is no anxiety in looking west.
Thereupon he used 30 000 hu of rice from Lingling to provide for him. Shang relied on it to thereby strengthen himself.
At that time the drifters in Jing province were more than a hundred thousand households. The wayfarers and travellers were poor and weary, many became bandits and thieves. Hong therefore provided them fields to plant and food to eat, selected their worthy talents, and followed competence to arrange employment [?].
At the time of the Zongzhang grand music performers, to escape chaos many arrived in Jing province. Some recommended they could make music. Hong said:
Formerly Liu Jingsheng [Liu Biao], due to the rites being ruined and the music collapsed, instructed Du Kui to make the Son of Heaven's gathered music. The music completed, he desired the courtyard to perform it. Kui said: “To make the Son of Heaven's gathered music and then have the courtyard perform it, [I] fear is not the General's real intention.” I regularly am sighing in admiration for him.
Now the Ruler and Sovereign is covered in dust, I am not yet able to to unfold and hand over This Subject's tally. Even though [I] have household performers [?], if it is not proper to listen, then even more so to manage music!
He therefore sent down to the commanderies and counties, to calm and comfort them. [He?] waited for the imperial court to turn around and go back, [and then?] sent them back to return to [their] original offices. [Not clear to me if he actually sent them back or not.]
Opinion on his merits in pacifying Zhang Chang [was that they] ought ot enfeoff his second as a county marquis. Hong sent up a missive firmly declining. Accepted it. He was advanced to serve as Palace Attendant, Great General who Garrisons the South, Opening Office with the Same Ceremonies as the Three Ministers.
Emperor Hui favoured Chang'an. The King of Hejian, Yong, clasped the Son of Heaven, and decreed Hong to be maintaining aid for Liu Qiao [JS061]. Hong, due to Zhang Fang's [JS060] ruthless violence, understood Yong would surely be defeated, and sent envoys to accepts the rules and measures of the King of Donghai, Yue.
At the time Under Heaven was in great chaos. Hong solely controlled Jiang and Han. [Due to his] power and actions, the south to submitted. The former Grand Warden of Guanghan, Xin Ran, advised Hong to use the affairs of “the vertical and horizontal” [that is, to form alliances]. Hong was greatly angered and beheaded him.
The King of Hejian, Yong, sent Zhang Guang [JS057] to be Grand Warden of Shunyang. The Grand Warden of Nanyang, Wei Zhan, advised Hong, saying:
When the King of Pengcheng previously fled east, there was no words of good [?]. Zhang Guang is the Grand Steward's belly and heart. We ought to behead Guang to thereby clarify towards or against.
Hong said:
The steward and assistant's gain or loss, how is it the crime of Zhang Guang! An upright person calms himself, a lordly master would not do it.
Zhan deeply resented him.
Chen Min [JS100] robbed Yang province, and drew up troops desiring to go up west. Hong therefore released the Southern Man, and accordingly conferred the previous Central Captain of the Northern Army, Jiang Chao, to command the Grand Warden of Jiangxia, Tao Kan, and Grand Warden of Wuling, Miao Guang, and use a great multitude to garrison at Xiakou. He also dispatched the Central Manager [?] He Song to lead the troops of Jianping, Yidu and Xiangyang commanderies to garrison Badong and be rear support for Luo Shang. He also added to the Grand Warden of Nanping, Ying Zhan [JS070] General who Soothes the Disant, to supervise the naval armies of the three commanderies and support Jiang Chao.
Kan and Min were from the same commandery, and also had been recommended as magistrates in the same year. He sometimes had spoken privately with Kan [?], Hong did not suspect him. He therefore used Kan as Controller-Protector of the Vanguard, commissioning him accordingly with the duty of punishing Min. Kan dispatched his son[s] and elder brother's son as hostages. Hong dispatched them, saying:
Your worthy uncle is going on conquest, the Lord's grandmother is exalted in years, [you] readily can return home. [If] the connections of an ordinary man even does not burden the heart, then how much more a great man of quality!
Chen Min in the end did not dare cast his eyes on the frontier.
3rd Year of Yongxing [306 AD], a decree advanced his title to General of Chariots and Cavalry, Opening Office and the remaining offices like before.
Hong always when he was raising up or demoting, wrote in his own hand to the wardens and chancellors to quietly soothe earnestly and privately [?]. By these means people always felt pleased, striving to hasten to him. Everyone said:
To obtain a single letter from Excellency Liu is worth the assistant officers of ten sections.
When the King of Donghai, Yue, received and welcomed the Great Carriage, Hong dispatched the Army Advisor Liu Pan to be Controller-Protector, leading the various armies to meet him. Pan had turned around, when Hong himself, due to old age and illness, wanted to free himself from the provinces and Colonel, inclining to separately conferring the sections. He had not yet managed to send up the petition when he passed on at Xiangyang. The gentlemen and women sighed bitterly, and mourned as if for a relative.
Earlier, the King of Chengdu, Ying, fled south, desiring to go to his home state. Hong resisted him. When Hong passed on, Hong's Marshal, Guo Mai, desired to push forward Ying as the leader. Hong's Fan sought to obey Hong's intentions, and hence with blackened [face] and white headband led the office troops to plot [against] Mai. He fought him at Zhui river and beheaded him. The Xiang and Mian [?] were respectful and pure.
Earlier, the King of Donghai, Yue, suspected Hong and Liu Qiao were changeable to himself. Even though he sent down his rules and measures, in his heart he was not able to be calm. When Hong resisted Ying, and Fan also beheaded Mai, the Imperial Court praised it. Yue in his own hand wrote to Fan to laud and commend him. He petitioned to bestow on Hong Duke of Xincheng commandery, with the posthumous title Inaugural [yuan].
Used the King of Gaomi, Lüe, to replace the headquarters. Bandits and robbers were not incarerated [?]. A decree raised Fan to be Interior Clerk of Shunyang. Between the Jiang and Han were drawing together to restore their hearts [?].
When Lüe passed away, Shan Jian replaced him. Jian arrived. He understood Fan had obtained the multitudes' hearts, and feared the hundred families would pressure to use him as the leader. He petitioned and laid out about it, and following that only [?] [used] Fan as Colonel of Outriders [a sinecure appointment at the capital]. Fan likewise was deeply worried about being pressured and compelled. On receiving the letter, he readily and quickly arrived at Luoyang. He afterwards dispatched to receive his family members. The refugees Hou Tuo, Lu Nan and others led each other to guard and see them off to reach the capital, and afterwards bid farewell and left.
Nanxia thereupon was in chaos. The old fathers recalled and thought of Hong. Even the Birch-leaf Pear's song about the Earl of Shao was not considered to exceed it.

“[Trump’s] efforts to depict China as caving in negotiations actually confirmed some of their worst fears about Trump: that he can’t be trusted to cut a deal.” (They're just now figuring that out?)
Wary of Trump’s Flip-Flops, China Prepares for Worst on Trade
by Peter Martin, Kevin Hamlin, Miao Han, Dandan Li, Steven Yang, and Ying Tian | Published August 27, 2019, 8:04 AM EDT | Bloomberg | Posted August 27, 2019 9:40 AM ET |
Trump’s tactics further deepen the distrust, analyst says
Xi lacks wiggle room as hardliners around him feel emboldened
After a weekend of confusing signals, Trump’s credibility has become a key obstacle for China to reach a lasting deal with the U.S., according to Chinese officials familiar with the talks who asked not to be identified. Only a few negotiators in Beijing see a deal as actually possible ahead of the 2020 U.S. election, they said, in part because it’s dangerous for any official to advise President Xi Jinping to sign a deal that Trump may eventually break.
In off-the-cuff remarks to reporters at the Group of Seven summit in France on Monday, Trump claimed that Chinese officials called “our top trade people” and said “let’s get back to the table.” In subsequent appearances he portrayed the outreach as evidence China was desperate to make a deal: “They’ve been hurt very badly, but they understand this is the right thing to do.”
It all made for splashy headlines and momentarily boosted stocks, but nobody in Beijing officialdom appeared to know what he was talking about. Even worse, his efforts to depict China as caving in negotiations actually confirmed some of their worst fears about Trump: that he can’t be trusted to cut a deal.
“Trump’s flip flop has further enlarged the distrust,” said Tao Dong, vice chairman for Greater China at Credit Suisse Private Banking in Hong Kong. “This makes a quick resolution nearly impossible.”
Two Chinese officials likened the country’s approach to the U.S. during the Korean War, saying it consisted of fighting while talking, and using fights to speed up talks. China has prepared contingency plans in case of a no-deal scenario, three officials said, including putting U.S. companies on its unreliable entity list and stimulating the economy.
China’s foreign ministry on Tuesday again said it was unaware of the phone calls mentioned by Trump, reiterating a statement immediately after his remarks. One of the first to call out Trump was Hu Xijin, chief editor at the Communist Party-backed Global Times newspaper, who said Monday that the U.S. president was exaggerating the significance of low-level talks and China’s position hadn’t changed.
While officials in Beijing are still willing to engage in trade talks, they are concurrently girding for a decoupling from the world’s biggest economy -- an effort made all the more acute when Trump “ordered” U.S. companies via Twitter to look for alternatives to China. After trade talks broke down in May, Xi renewed calls for China to pursue “self-reliance” in key technologies and even called on citizens to join a “new Long March.”
“A gradual decoupling is happening de facto because companies have to make alternative plans when there’s so much uncertainty,“ said Tim Stratford, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and a former assistant U.S. trade representative.
The conflict has inflicted pain on China, exacerbating the slowest economic expansion in almost three decades as authorities also seek to keep a lid on debt and financial stability risks. Still, officials have room to loosen policy further: The central bank last week unveiled a major reform designed to help lower borrowing costs, and the government is considering allowing provinces to issue more bonds for infrastructure investment.
Politically, Xi doesn’t have much wiggle room to indulge Trump. Hardliners have become more emboldened each time Trump has shattered a temporary truce and hit China harder, from raising tariffs to blacklisting leading tech company Huawei Technologies Co.
While China has been open to a deal that includes greater purchases of U.S. agriculture goods, it’s politically unfeasible for Xi to sign off on an agreement that leaves the punitive tariffs in place. He also can’t agree to privatize parts of the economy that are crucial to the Communist Party’s grip on power, such as certain state-owned enterprises.
Party Legitimacy
“For China, it is about legitimacy of the Party’s rule -- economic performance and nationalism, especially about the rise of the Chinese people on the world stage,” said Suisheng Zhao, executive director of the Center for China-U.S. Cooperation at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of International Studies. “Both are at stake, and China can’t afford to lose. China is not likely to make any substantial concessions currently.”
For now, the two sides are technically supposed to meet next month to resume trade talks. From China’s perspective, progress primarily depends on Trump’s political calculations heading into the 2020 election -- and even then they will want iron-clad reassurances he makes good on his word.
Trump may be realizing that his China-bashing will be “disastrous” for the U.S. economy and American companies, according to Charles Liu, a former economic negotiator with the Chinese delegation at the United Nations and founder of Hao Capital.
“The only thing that conceivably has changed is that Trump is under a lot of pressure to make a deal -- not the Chinese, Trump,” Liu said. “The Chinese position will be that if you want to talk, the door is always open, but this bullying is not going to be helpful for the discussion.”

Anything on these new batch of officers: Zhu Zan (朱讚), Xun Yun(荀惲), Zhang Zhu (張著), Yang Hong (楊洪), Li Fu(李輔, so many Li Fu's in the PUK lol. I believe this is Meng Da's Li Fu?), Ying Shao (應劭)?
Ying Shao was an important scholar. The rest are varying degrees of irrelevant.
Zhu Zan: A childhood friend of Cao Zhen. He joined the army with Cao Zhen but died young. Afterwards, Cao Zhen gave a portion of his own fief to Zhu Zan’s children and had had his sons named as counts so that the family would prosper.
Xun Yun: Xun Yu’s oldest son, he married one of Cao Cao’s daughters (the later Princess of Anyang). He eventually inherited Xun Yu’s nobel title and became General of the Interior of the Swift Tiger corps (commander of the imperial guards). He and Cao Pi never got along because Xun Yun was close with Cao Zhi and at odds with Xiahou Shang. However, Cao Pi did have great fondness for Xun Yun’s children. Xun Yun died young, evidently some time during Cao Pi’s sreign.
Zhang Zhu: A subordinate of Zhao Yun. During a battle at Hanzhong, Zhang Zhu was injured and left behind. Zhao Yun came back to rescue him. This story is only told in the Zhao Yun Beizhuan, so its authenticity is doubtful.
Yang Hong: An officer of Shu. He held commandery posts under Liu Zhang. When Liu Bei took over Yi, Yang Hong became oFficer of Merit under Li Yan, responsible for recommending worthy locals for appointment. The two quarreled and Yang Hong wished to resign, so Li Yan arranged for him to be transferred to Shu commandery instead. Yang Hong was noted for his loyalty and honesty, which impressed Zhuge Liang, so Yang Hong became Administrator of Shu. He was among the group who urged Liu Bei to take the throne and was later made a general. Yang Hong passed away in 228.
Li Fu: From Zitong. After Liu Bei took Shu, Li Fu became an officer of his staff and was eventually made Magistrate of Chengdu. Under Liu Shan, he became Administrator of Baxi, then Marshal of Jiangzhou as well as a high-ranking general. Later, he became a supervisor of the secretariat and was made a marquis. When Jiang Wan planned a campaign, Li Fu was appointed as a military adviser, but he died before the campaign took place, and the campaign was subsequently canceled anyway.
Ying Shao: From Runan, he was a distinguished scholar of Later Han. He served in his local commandery and received nomination to the court. In Luoyang, he served as a clerk to he Miao (brother to He Jin and Empress He) and then under one of the Excellencies. In 185, he was noted for protesting the recruitment of tribal auxiliaries from among the Wuhuan and Xianbei to deal with the Liang Rebels, and the proposal was dropped. In 186 he became a magistrate in Xu province, and he held several other positions before becoming Administrator of Taishan in 189. In 191, he led locals against an incursion of Turban remnants and defeated them. In 192, he acquiesced to Tao Qian’s authority, although since Taishan was in Yan commandery he was also under Cao Cao’s control. In 193, Cao Cao ordered him to escort his father Cao Song to the east. After Cao Song was killed, Ying Shao feared he would be blamed, so he fled north to Yuan Shao and became an adviser on his staff. During this period, he wrote a massive compendium of important Han legal cases. It was 250 volumes in length, with an additional 30 of dissenting opinions. When the emperor came to Xu city in 196, Ying Shao seng his compendium to the court, along with a wealth material on the proper conduct of the court. Ying Shao’s works were largely responsible for the preservation of Han culture and served as primary sources for innumerable historians in the subsequent generations. Biography of Shi Le (Weishu)
A brief history of Later Zhao. I feel like this post should have some kind of content warning. From Weishu 095.
The Jie Hu Shi Le, courtesy name Shilong, had the child name Fule. His ancestors were a separate section of the Xiongnu which divided off to live among the Jie families in Wuxiang in Shangdang [?]. For that reason he is titled a Jie Hu. [Jie羯 also means “castrated ram”.]
His grandfather Xieyiyu and his father Zhouhezhu, also written Qiyijia, were both minor leaders of section groups. Zhouhezhu was by nature brutal and course, and was not adhered to by the crowd of Hu. Le was large and strong, had brave schemes, and excelled at riding and shooting. Zhouhezhu always made him replace himself in supervising and administering the section Hu. The section Hu were fond of and trusted him.
The Inspector of Bing province, Sima Teng, seized various Hu, and sold them East of the Mountains to fill army supplies. A pair of Hu [shared] a single cangue. Le likewise was among [them]. Arriving in Pingyuan, he was originally sold to Mr. Shi as a slave. In the neighbourhood of the Shi family there were horse shepherd. Le and the shepherd leader Ji Sang came and went supporting each other. He thereupon summoned ans assembled Wang Yang, Kui An, Zhi Xiong, Ji Bao, Wu Yu, Liu Ying, Tao Bao, Lu Ming, Guo Ao, Liu Bao, Zhang Yi, Huyan Mo, Guo Heilüe, Zhang Yue, Kong Tun, Zhao Lu, Zhi Quliu and others. They went east to the Red Dragon and Thoroughbred Pastures, drove the pasture horses and turned around to plunder silk and treasures to accordingly present to Ji Sang.
At the deposing of the King of Chengdu, Ying, Ying's former general, Dong Shi Fan of Yangping and others called himself General, and rose with troops in Zhao and Wei. The multitudes reached several ten thousands. Le and Ji Sang led the shepherds, driving the pasture horses, several hundred cavalry, to accordingly go to him. And so Sang first instructed Le to use Shi as his family, and use Le as his personal name. Fan designated him as Controller of the Van Unit.
Fan was defeated in battle and himself died. Le and  Ji Sang absconded to hide within the pastures. Ying's generals went north of the He. Ji Sang used Le to crouch at night at the Serrated Gates. He led the shepherds to coerce and plunder the commanderies and counties' bound convicts. He gathered an army to respond to him, garrisoning at Pingshi.
Sang called himself Great General and advanced the army to attack Ye. He used Le as Chief Commandant of the Vanguard. He attacked Ye and overcame it. A short while after he was defeated by the Jin general Gou Xi.
Le went to follow Liu Yuan, He designated him General who Assists Han and King who Pacifies Jin. Liu Cong was established. He used Le as Great General who Conquers the East, Inspector of Bing province and Duke of Ji commandery.
Liu Can attacked Luoyang. Le detained the Senior Clerk Diao Ying to control 90 000 footsoldiers, moved the supply wagons to Zhongmen, led 20 000 light cavalry to meet with Can at Taiyang, and greatly defeated Jin's Army Overseer Pei Miao at Mianche. Thereupon he arrived in the Luo river lands.
Le set out for Chengdao, and besieged Jin's Chief Commandant of Chenliu, Wang Zan, at Cangyuan. He was defeated by Zan.
He garrisoned Wenshi ford, wanting to attack northward against Jin's Inspector of You province, Wang Jun. It happened that Jun's general Wang Jia just then led more than 10 000 cavalry of the Liaoxi Xianbei to defeat Liu Cong's Great General who Calms the North, Zhao Gu to the north of the ford. Le therefore burnt the ships and abandoned the encampment, and pulled the army towards Baimen. He greeted the supply wagons from Zhongmen, joined [with them] at Shimen and crossed.
He attacked southward against Jin's Inspector of Yu province, Feng Song, in Chen commandery, but did not overcome. He advanced to attack the Chief Commandant of Xiangcheng, Cui Guang, at Fanchang, and beheaded him.
Before this, drifting people from Yong province, Wang Ru, Hou Tuo, Yan Yi and others, rose with troops between the Jiang and Huai, and received office and rank from Liu Yuan. They heard of Le's coming, and were afraid. They dispatched a multitude of 100 000 to resist at Xiangcheng. Le strike and defeated them, and fully captured their multitudes.
Le arrived in Nanyang, and garrisoned the mountains north of Wan. Wang Ru dispatched envoys to discuss peace. Le advanced to attack Wan, took it, beheaded Hou Tuo, took the surrender of Yan Yi, fully [capturing] both their multitudes.
He moved south to Xiangyang, attacking and taking more than 30 ramparts, and had ambitions of occupying [the land between] Jiang and Han. Le's Senior Clerk of the Right, Zang Bin considered it to be impossible, so he withdrew the army and went north.
Jin's Grand Tutor, the King of Donghai, Yue, led the multitudes of Luoyang, more than 200 000, to punish Le. Yue passed away in  the field. The people of the army pushed forward the Grand Commandant Wang Yan as master, to lead the army and go east.
Le pursued and struck, routing them in Ku county. Le distributed cavalry to surround and shoot the,, [the dead?] piled up on each other like a mountain. He killed Wang Yan, Jin's King of Xiangyang, Fan, and others, 100 000 people. Yue's Heir Pi heard Yue had passed away, and set out from Luoyang, the followers poured out of the city [?]. Le confronted Pi at Weicang, and routed him. He seized Pi and 16 kings of the Jin imperial house and also the various ministers and gentlemen, and killed them all.
He together with Wang Mi and Liu Yao attacked and captured Luoyang, turning the merit over [?] to Mi and Yao. Thereupon he set out for Huanyuan. He captured Jin's Great General Gou Xi, and used him as Marshal of the Left. Liu Cong conferred on Le Great General who Garrisons the Army and Inspector of You province, acting as Inspector of Bing province.
He employed Zhang Bin's plan, and undertook himself from Ge Slope [?] to move his seat north to Xiangguo. He invaded You province, caught Wang Jun, and killed him. Liu Cong added to Le Earl of Xiadong, to manage on his own conquests and attacks, and to enfeoff and designate Inspectors, Generals, Wardens and steward, and arrangement of marquises, annually to comprehensively compile and send up [?].
When Liu Can was killed by Jin Zhun, Le led the multitudes to hurry to Pingyang. Yao claimed the venerated title. He conferred on Le Great Marshal, Great General, and additionally the Nine Bestowments. He added to his fief 10 commandiers, together with the preceding, 13 commanderies, and advanced him to be Duke of Zhao.
Le arrived at Pingyang. Jin Lang set out to battle with Le, Le greatly routed him. He dispatched Combined Senior Clerks of the Left, Wang Xiu, and the Master of Accounts, Liu Mao, to present the victory to Yao. Lang led the multitudes of Pingyang in flight to Yao. Yao proceeded west to Suyi. Le burnt Pingyang's palaces houses, set up border guards and returned. He moved the whole ritual and musical receptacles to Xiangguo.
Yao dispatched envoys to confer on Le Grand Steward, acting as Great General, and advanced his noble rank to King of Zhao, adding to his fief 7 commanderies, together with the preceding, 20 commanderies, when setting out and entering the guards to clear way, his crown to have 12 strings, to drive the Gold Root chariot, the carriage to have six horses, like in the old affairs when Wu of Wei assisted Han.
Wang Xiu's retainer, Cao Pingle stayed to serve at Yao's court. He talked to Yao, saying:
[When] the Great Marshal dispatched Xiu and others to come, he on the outside showed extreme reverence but on the inside [wanted to] spy out strength or weakness.
Yao truly was withered and wasted, and feared Xiu would make public about him [?]. Greatly angered, he dispatched to turn back the recorded instructions, and beheaded Wang Xiu.
Liu Mao escaped and returned, and told the circumstances of Xiu's death. Le was greatly angered, and executed Cao Pingle's father and elder brother, and eradicated his three kindred. He also made known to retroactively put stop to the conferrals of Grand Steward and King of Zhao, angrily saying:
The rise of Emperors and Kings, again how are they regular? King of Zhao, Emperor of Zhao, Your Orphan himself will take it. Fame and titles great and small, why are they measured by you?
Le therefore declared himself Great Commander-in-Chief, Great General, Great Shanyu and King of Zhao, using 24 commanderies as the state of Zhao, and declared it to be the Inaugural Year of the King of Zhao. It was the 3rd Year of Pingwen [319 AD].
Le dispatched envoys to seek peace, requesting to be brothers. Beheaded his envoys to thereby terminate it. From then at court assemblies, he regularly pretended to the rites and music of the Son of Heaven, accordingly hosting the crowd of subjects.
1st Year of Emperor Lie [329 AD], Le again dispatched envoys to request peace. The Emperor accepted it.
2nd Year [330 AD], Le usurped to declare [himself] August Emperor and set up the hundred officials., the era titled Jiangping [“Establishing Peace”, 330 – 333]. Even though the seat was at Xiangguo, he also constructed palaces at Ye. The builders were several hundred thousand followers, combining accordingly day and night.
5th Year [333 AD], Le died. His son Daya was falsely established.
Daya's name violates the temple taboo of Xianzu [I.e Emperor Xianwen of Wei, Tuoba Hong.] Daya was established, titling the era Yanxi [“Extended Radiance”, 334 AD]. Shi Hu deposed Daya to be King of Haiyang and falsely established [himself]. Soon after he killed him.
Hu, courtesy name Jilong, was Le's nephew. His grandfather was named Fuxie and his father was named Koumi. Koumi had seven sons, Hu was the fourth. Le's father. Le's father from he was an infant treated him as a son. For that reason some speaks of him as Le's younger brother.
In the middle of Jin's Yongxing [304 – 306], he and Le lost each other.
5th Year of Yongjia [311 AD], Liu Kun sent off Le's mother, Ms. Wang, and Hu to Ge slope. At the time he was 17 years old.
He was by nature ruthless and cruel, wandering and hunting without measure, able to shoot left and right. He excelled at using the pellet crossbow to shoot people. Within the army they were considerably vexed by him. Le made clear to his mother, saying:
This boy is brutal, violent and unreliable. [If I] make people in the army kill him, [my] fame and renown might decline. [I] ought to eliminate him myself.
Wang said:
A fast ox when he is a calf, is often able to destroy the chariot. Have after all a little endurance and do not let go of him.
When he became 18 years old, he was 7 chi, 5 cun tall, with bows and horses he was quick and nimble, in bravery he was at the head of the time period. Generals, subordinates, relatives and friends could not but respect in dread, Le deeply praised him.
Yet his brutal murdering was beyond proportions. Within the army there were those whose were large and strong, and because of that when [they during] hunting amused [themselves] with jokes [?], he immediately killed them. Arriving at the surrenders of cities and captures of ramparts, he did not then judge and separate good and evil, but buried and beheaded gentlemen and women, and rarely omitting anyone [?].
He managed the multitudes strict and orderly, [so they] did not dare commit crimes. When he directed and conferred attacks and punishments [of the enemy], in that direction there were nobody in front [of him]. For that reason Le's favour and trust were extensive and abundant, relying upon him accordingly sole for appointments for conquests.
Liu Cong used Hu as Grand Warden of Wei commandery, headquartered at Ye's Three Terraces. He was also enfeoffed Marquis of Fanyang, with a revenue estate of 3 000 households. Le became King of Zhao. He used Hu as General of Chariots and Cavalry, concurrently Palace Attendant and Opening Office, and advanced his fief to Duke of Zhongshan. Le claimed the venerated title. He became Grand Commandant and Warden Prefect of the Masters of Writing, enfeoffed King of Zhongshan, with a revenue estate of 10 000 households.
Le died. Hu on his own executed the Brilliantly Blessed Grandee of the Right, Chang Xia, and the Prefect of the Palace Writers, Xu Guang. He dispatched his son Sui to led troops and enter Daya's palace. The duty guard and civil and martial officials all ran and scattered. Daya was greatly afraid, affirmed himself to be inexperienced and inferior, and yielded the throne to Hu. Hu said:
Suppose [you] are incapable, Under Heaven must itself have great righteousness. How is it sufficient to comfortably discuss [?].
Thereupon he compelled to establish him.
Hu [used] himself as Imperial Chancellor and King of Wei. Hu, due to Le's civil and military officials [being] old subjects, always filled vacancies with appointments from Imperial Chancellor's pen [?]. His office companions were old intimates, and everyone stayed at the Terraces scrutinizing restrictions and demands [?].
He changed Le's Heir Apparent Palace to be named the Chongxun [“Esteemed Teachings”] Palace, and moved Le's wife Ms. Liu and below to live there. He chose their beautiful and gentle, and the control of [?] chariots, horses and clothes, everything reverted to Hu's mansion. Ms. Liu spoke to her King of Pengcheng, Shi Kan, saying:
The Imperial Chancellor readily assents to transgress and step on, [I] fear the extermination of the state's blessings will not again wait for long. It can truly be said to be raising a tiger [hu] to harm yourself. King, might [I] ask [your] designs for it?
Kan said:
The Former Emperor's old subjects are all outside due to dismissals. The multitudes' journeys do not again make use of [our] people]. Inside of the palace halls is a burial plan for destruction [?].
Your Subject requests to set out and flee for Yan province, occupy Linqiu, support the King of Nanyang, Hui, as Master of the Covenant, proclaim the Empress Dowager's decree to the various shepherds and wardens, [Generals who] Conquers and Garrisons, order each to lead righteous troops to just now punish the evil rebel. They will not but aid.
Ms. Liu made it so. But then Kan's plan did not come to fruit. Hu roasted [?] and killed him, and also killed Ms. Liu. Shi Sheng was formerly headquartered at Chang'an, Shi Lang was headquartered at Luoyang. Both rose with troops to punish Hu, and were wiped out by Hu.
Hu thereupon established himself as King of Great Zhao, titled the year Jianwu [“Establishing the Martial”, 335 – 348 AD], and moved from Xiangguo to reside at Ye. He therefore killed Daya and his mother Ms. Cheng, and all of Daya's various younger brothers.
Earlier, Hu was wearing ceremonial dress and crown and was about to sacrifice at the southern suburbs, when his reflection in the mirror had no head. He was greatly afraid and terrified, and did not dare to make claim to August Emperor. Therefore he lowered himself to be King.
He made his Heir-Apparent Sui scrutinize and admit the memorials and affairs of the Masters of Writing. Only [if the topic was] the selection for the shepherds and wardens, sacrifices at the suburbs and temples, conquests and attacks, punishments and dismissals, he then personally inspected them. Hu again changed to claim [himself] Heavenly King of Great Zhao. [When] Sui used affairs to submit to him, he indignantly said:
These are minor matters, how are they sufficient to submit!
At times when he had questions, he also angrily said:
Why did you not submit!
He criticized and called him to account, and struck him with a cane, for a length of two or three months. Sui was considerably resentful and vengeful, and privately spoke to the Palace Cadet Li Yan and others, saying:
The public house is difficult to esteem. I desire to act on the affairs of Moudun. Sirs, do you follow me?
Yan and others in the circumstances did not dare to reply. Hu heard and was greatly angered. He killed Sui and his 26 sons and daughters, and buried them only in a coffin. He executed his palace subjects and supporting faction, more than 200 people. He established his second son Xuan as Heir-Apparent.
Hu erected at Ye more than forty towers, and constructed palaces at Chang'an and Luoyang. The builders were more than 400 000 people. He also desired to erect a gallery way from Ye reaching until Xiangguo.
He commanded the four provinces south of the He to draw up preparations of the host; Bing, Shuo, Qin, Yong and Yan嚴 in the west to provide supplies for a punishment [campaign]; Qing, Ji and You to send out three of five as troops. The various provinces prepared 500 000 armoured soldiers. He disturbed and laboured the common people, people numerously lost their patrimony. He obtained from the mulberry farmers from ten houses he had three [?]. Of sailors there were 17 000 people. Those drowned in the water or murdered by Hu [or “tigers”] were one out of three.
When examining or calling into account summoned soldiers five people [were to bring] one chariot, two oxen, 15 hu rice each and 10 bolts of tabby silk [?]. In the various service movements [if] there were those who did not get ready, he always used beheading as sentence. Destitute people for the most part often sold children to accordingly fill army regulations [?]. And if still insufficient, they hanged themselves on the roads and paths. The dead looked at each other, as if seeking to send out without end.
The Grand Martial Hall was completed, with illustrations picturing loyal subjects, filial sons, zealous gentlemen and chaste women, all altered to be in the shape of the Hu, the heads receding into the shoulders. Hu greatly detested them.
He dispatched the Minister of Gamekeeping [?] and Commander of the Palace Gentlemen, Jia Ba, to lead 4 000 labourers and artisans to build in the hills and mountains of Dongping 1 000 hunting chariots. [With?] the shafts they were 3 zhang long, the height was 1 zhang 8 chi, the nets were 1 zhang 7 chi tall. They laid out forty of Hu's chariots, erecting moving two storey buildings on top of them [?]. To the south they reached Xingyang, to the east Jiyang commandery, he made the Imperial Clerks oversee and direct.
Within them there were birds and beasts, those of the people who trespassed were punished as great criminals. The Imperial Clerks because of it arrogating making power and fortune [?]. [If] people had pretty women or excellent oxen and horses, and they demanded but did not get them, they readily made false accusations using the sentencing for trespassing on the beasts. Those of the people who died succeeded each other, between the sea and Mount Dai, the He and the Ji, people had no aspirations for tranquility.
He also sent out the people's oxen, more than 20 000 animals, allotted to the Shepherd of Shuo province's officials. He added to the interior officials 24 grades, to the Eastern Palace 12 grades. The various dukes and marquises, more than 70 sets, all were to set up women officials in 9 grades.
Before this, he greatly sent out the people's women, [those] twenty and below, and thirteen and above, more than 30 000 people, to be ranking in three grades, and accordingly divided and allotted them. Commanderies and counties having hopes and aims applied themselves to the beautiful and gentle, the snatched wives were more than 9 000 people. Wives of the people with a beautiful appearance, and the prominent and powerful because of that then threatening them, led many to kill themselves. The Heir-Apparent and the various Dukes privately ordered to gather those sent out, likewise close to 10 000.
9th Year of Jianguo [346 AD], Hu dispatched envoys to court with tribute.
He made his Heir-Apparent Xuan and Xuan's younger brother, the Duke of Qin, Tao on alternative days scrutinize and admit the memorials and affairs of the Masters of Writing. Xuan detested that Tao was equal to himself and spoke to his favourites, Yang Ke, Mou Cheng and others, saying:
[If] you all kill Tao, and I enter the Western Palace, [I] will use the estates of Tao's state to divide the fief [among] you all. When Tao is dead, the Sovereign will surely personally preside. Following that [I will] act out the great affair, it will not but succeed.
Ke and others promised and assented. Therefore at night they entered Tao's mansion and killed him. Hu wanted to set out and preside over Tao's mourning, his Minister of Works, Li Nong, remonstrated, and he therefore desisted.
Next day, there was a person who told about it. Hu was greatly angered. He used iron rings to pierce Xuan's jaw and shackled him. He made a wooden trough of several dou, blending accordingly stews as meals, using the methods of pigs and dogs to feed him. He took the blades and weapons that murdered Tao [for Xuan] to lick the blood on top of them, the sound of the cries and shouts shook and moved the palace halls.
He stored up firewood north of the city, planting a guidepost on top of it. At the end of the guidepost he set up a lifting pulley, boring through it using a rope. He sent off Xuan to the place of the guidepost, and made Tao's personal eunuchs, Hao Ya and Liu Ling,  pull out his hair, take out his tongue, and use ropes through his jaws for the pulley to winch him up with. Liu Ling chopped off his hands and feet, cleaved the eyes and scattered the stomach, like Tao's wounds. They let loose the fire on four sides, the smoke and flames reaching the sky. Hu, accompanied by the Bright and Decorous [a concubine rank] and below, several thousand people, climbed the Middle Terrace to accordingly observe it. The fire extinguished, he took the ashes to distribute and set up at the various gates and road junctions.
He killed his wives and children, 29 people, executed his four Leaders [of the guard] and below, 300 people, and eunuchs, 50 people. All were torn apart by chariots until the joins loosened, and dumped into the Zhang river. He defiled his Eastern Palace, using it to rear pigs and oxen.
12th Year [349 AD], Hu declared himself August Emperor, titling the year Taining [“Grand Tranquility”, 349 AD].
Hu died, his youngest son Shi was falsely established. Hu's foster grandson Min killed Shi, and used Shi's elder brother Zun as the ruler. Zun used Min as Great General Assisting the Government.
When Zun had been established for seven days there was a great storm, with thunderclaps, day became night [?]. Flames and water came down together, causing calamity at the Grand Martial Hall, extending to reach inside of the palace, offices and storehouses, reaching until the Main [changhe] Gate. It burned for the remainder of the month and then was extinguished.
Zun's elder brother Jian also killed Zun and established himself, titling the year Qinglong [“Blue-green Dragon”. Jian's younger brother Bao together with the Hu Zhang Cai, Sun Fudu and others planned to kill Min, did not overcome and died. From the Fengyang Gate to the Kunhua Hall, the piled up corpses were like hills, the flowing blood complete ponds.
Min understood the Hu people could not be employed by himself, and therefore closed the four gates of Ye City, completely killing the various Hu. Of those the Jin people who resembled the Hu many likewise excessively died. Min then killed Jian and established himself, and completely exterminated the Shi clan.
[Interestingly 晉人 here seems to be used in an ethnic sense.]
Min's original family name was Ran, he therefore restored it as his family name. He declared himself Great Wei, titling the year Yongxing [“Eternal Fostering”,  350 – 352] Soon after he was caught by Murong Jun.

Biography of Zhang Guang
[From JS057]
Zhang Guang, courtesy name, Jingwu, was a native of Zhongwu in Jiangxia. He was 8 chi tall, had brilliant eyebrows and eyes and a pleasing voice. As young he was a commandery magistrate. His home had household troops, he accordingly as Commander of the Serrated Gates had merits in the attack on Wu. He moved to Chief Commandant of Jiangxia's Western Section, then shifted to Chief Commandant of Beidi.
Earlier, when the King of Zhao, Lun was Commander-in-Chief of Guanzhong, the Di and the Qiang turned to rebellion [in 296]. The Grand Warden Zhang Sun fought and lost. Of the commandery and county magistrates and gentlemen [or soldiers], few were those who remained. Guang used more than hundred people to defend north of Mount Malan. The traitors besieged him for more than 100 days. Guang consoled and sharpened his generals and soldiers, and again and again suddenly sent out troops to strike the traitors, routing them.
Guang, due to the troops being few and the roads remote, himself was separately defeated and overcome [?]. It happened the King of Liang, Rong dispatched Marshal Suo Jing [JS060] to command troops and welcome Guang. He lifted up the army's sorrowful cries and thereupon returned to Chang'an. Rong petitioned [for?] Guang: “Staying on ground cut off and encircled, he has the loyalty of shining reverence [?], [we] ought to add and make clear bestowals, thereby clarifying rewards and recommendations.” And so he was selected and conferred on Grand Warden of Xinping, adding drums and pipes.
During the Inspector of Yong province, Liu Chen, using a private decree to punish the King of Hejian, Yong, Guang rose with troops to aid Chen. Chen at the time appointed and relied on the Inspector of Qin province, Huangfu Zhong [JS060]. Zhong himself, due to being of a great clan from west of the passes, in his heart always made light of Guang, and in his plans often did not employ him.
When the armies of the two provinces were dispersed, he was arrested by Yong. Yong spoke to Guang, saying: “Before when rising with troops and desiring to make [chaos?], what was the plan?” Guang with a straight face answered, saying: “Only Liu of Yong province did not employ low schemes, and because of that caused the Great King to manage to get to today.” Yong was impressed with him [?], pulled on him to enjoy a banquet with him for a full day, and petitioned for him to be Marshal of the Guards of the Right.
When Chen Min [JS100] made chaos, appointed Guang Grand Warden of Shunyang, concurrently General who Climbs the Jiang, to command 5 000 infantry and cavalry through Jing province and punish him. The Inspector, Liu Hong [JS066], decorously respected and esteemed [?] Guang, and called him the flower of Southern Chu.
At the time, the Grand Warden of Jiangxia, Tao Kan [JS066] and Min's great general Qian Duan were resisting each other and about to fight. The Grand Warden of Xiangyang, Pi Chu, had the infantry of the army, and made Guang to build an ambush to thereby wait for him. The Grand Warden of Wuling, Miao Gunag, had the river army and was concealing boats and warships on the Mian river. Pi Chu and others exchanged battle with the traitors. Guang sent out the ambush troops to obey him. Water and land made similar efforts and the traitor multitudes were greatly defeated. Hong petitioned that Guang were of unusual merit, and he was moved to General of the Timber Office [?] and Inspector of Liang# province.
Before this, Deng Ding and others, natives of Qin province, with more than 2 000 families, from starvation and hunger drifted into Hanzhong, defending [themselves] at Chenggu and gradually becoming plunderers and bandits. The Inspector of Liang province, Zhang Yin, dispatched the Grand Warden of Baxi, Zhang Yan, to punish them. Ding was direly hard-pressed and falsely begged to surrender to Yan, and also presented Yan with gold and silver. Yan was glad and began to delay his host. Ding privately connected with Li Xiong. Xiong dispatched a multitude to save Ding. Yan withdrew. Ding thereupon advanced to pressure Hanzhong. The Grand Warden, Du Zhengchong, fled east to Weixing. Yin likewise abandoned his office and hid himself.
Guang did not manage to go to the province, and halted in Weixing. He therefore joined the various commandery wardens to plan together to advance and capture.
Yan chanted a verse saying: “Hanzhong is withering and overthrown, pressed near and close to the great traitors, the affair of overcoming and returning, must wait for a brave hero.”
Zhengchong said: “Zhang Yan received the traitors' gold and silver, and did not at the time advance and punish. Obstructing troops and relaxing bandits, causing grief for Hanzhong, truly the crimes Yan.”
Guang hence blossomed into fury, berating Yan and ordering to set out, beheading him to thereby comply [?]. He soothed and consoled the withered and injured, the hundred families happily submitted. Guang hence held off [?] headquartering in Hanzhong.
At the time the rebellious traitor Wang Ru's remaining faction, Li Yun, Yang Wu and others, from Xiangyang commanded 3 000 families to enter Hanzhong. Guang dispatched the Adjutant Jin Miao to lead a multitude to Huangjin to resist them. Miao accepted Yun's heavy bribes and recommended Guang to receive Yun. Guang followed Miao's words and sent [him?] to reside at Chenggu.
Then Miao, due to Yun's many precious goods, also desired to rob him, and again talked to Guang, saying: “Yun's followers and supporters do not serve as tenant farmers, only instruments and cudgels of the barracks, [their?] minds will be difficult to estimate. We can ambush and take them.”
Guang again relied on him. He dispatched Miao with a multitude to punish Yun, but he did not overcome [Yun]. Guang requested a host from the King of the Di, Yang Maosou. Maosou dispatched his son Nandi to help him. Nandi demanded goods from Guang. Guang did not give him. Yang Wu therefore substantially bribed Nandi, speaking to him, saying: “The wandering people's precious things are known be in Guang's place. Now to attack me, is not like attacking Guang.”
Nandi was greatly pleased. He publicly spoke of help Guang, but on the inside he was together with Yun. Guang did not know of it, and dispatched Xi Yuan [?] to lead a multitude to help Miao. Yun and Nandi attacked Miao and others from both sides [?]. Yuan was hit by a stray arrow and died. The traitors were thereupon greatly abundant.
Guang encircled the defenders of Chenggu, from summer to winter, his resentment excited a complete [?] illness. The subordinate magistrates and the hundred families together recommended Guang to withdraw and take possession of Weixing. Guang put a hand on his sword, saying: “I accepted the state's substantial kindness, but was not able to cut out and eliminate the bandits and thieves. Now to obtain death for myself [?] and to expediently go and climb to the immortals. How can I withdraw and return?”
His voice cut off and he passed on. At the time he was 55 years old. The hundred families cried in grief, far and near lamented and grieved. He had two sons, Jiong and Mai.
Jiong as young was nominated to the staff of the Grand Steward. Mai had much talent for planning and had the manners of his fathers. The people of the province pushed forward Mai with the authority and lead on the affairs of the province. He fought with the traitors and lost. The Aide-de-Camp Fan Kuang and the Controller-Protector Wang Qiao accepted Guang's wife breath [?], and led his neglected multitudes, returning to take possession of Weixing. Later the Grand Warden of Yiyang, Ren Yin, became [Inspector] of Liang# province. Guang's wife and sons returned to their home commandery.
The Grand Warden of Nanping, Ying Zhan spoke to the Commander-in-Chief, Wang Dun [JS098], saying: “When Guang was in Liang# province, he was able to foster the small and continue the cut off, his power excited Ba and Han. Coming upon the Central Plains being upset and turned over, conquering and garrisoning lost the defenders, outside without aid and assistance, inside warding the wealth and reserve, thereby being alone and the enemy a multitude [?]. Passing through the years he resisted and defended, with sharp authority and not bending. We  ought to soon posthumously discuss displaying bestowals. Thereby comforting the living and dead.” Dun was not able to follow.
