Houthis launched missile strike on US ships and Israel’s Eilat

Yahya Sarea, the group’s military spokesman, said on Tuesday that Yemeni Houthis launched a missile attack on the MADO fuel tanker in the Red Sea and cruise missiles at the Israeli port and resort region of Eilat.

The MADO tanker was carrying Marshall Islands-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to Singapore from Saudi Arabia, maritime shipping trackers showed. Houthis labelled it as American, but the Equasis ship database shows it belongs to Greek company Naftomar Shipping & Trading Co Ltd. Naftomar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Iranian Houthi militants have repeatedly launched drones and missiles at international commercial ships in the Red Sea region since mid-November, saying they were acting in solidarity with Palestinians opposed to Israel’s military attack in Gaza.

The attacks have disrupted global shipping, forcing companies to make longer and more expensive voyages across southern Africa.

The US and Britain and other naval forces retaliated against Houthi targets.

Houthi leader vowed to target more sea routes near Cape of Good Hope

Yemeni Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi claimed on Thursday that attacks on ships would become more frequent in order to prevent Israeli-linked vessels from passing through the Indian Ocean towards the Cape of Good Hope.

Our main battle is to prevent ships linked to the Israeli enemy from passing through not only the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, but also the Indian Ocean towards the Cape of Good Hope. This is a major step and we have begun to implement our operations related to it.

The Houthis have been attacking ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in what they say is a campaign to support Palestinians suffering from the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza. Al-Houthi reported that some 34 members of its group had been killed since 7 October.
