So Many Fanfics So Little Time
This is just my list, I have seen so many (but if you want to use it it’s all yours too!).  I’m not a writer.  But I am a hell of a reader. Voracious one might argue. I just wanted to track my progress through the weeds of the absolutely never ending supply of Destiel and Cockles fanfic.
Read on if you want to see what I’ve read, and what I’ve thought. I am but one person with opinions - some of them may be unpopular - some of them you might agree with, but if you find something you haven’t read here, I encourage you to do so.
Honestly, this is just so I can track what I have read already, and when my friends ask, I can reference something easily. I have found some different fics on all kinds of ‘best of’ lists all over the interwebs. And I love recs - so rec away friends.
As someone who reads a solid 40 novels a year typically, I don’t come by the “I read a lot” innocently. I do actually read a LOT.  When not reading fanfic (a new obsession, all things being fair), I usually read a lot of Fantasy/high fantasy, romance/erotica, and or YA (yeah, that was a bit of a ride no?).  So from this one might digress that I like fluffy, cute stories, complicated and supernatural/paranormal type stories, and I sure do not shy away from violence or smut (or maybe violence with smut? *smirk*).
I have read all of these in the last 2-3 months (I will continue to add as I go). I had never read a fanfic until 2-3 months ago.  A lot of these wonderful people are on here, and I mean you no offence by not directly tagging you - I’m still learning how to actually properly use this site. Links to AO3 are included (and I love you all).
These aren’t necessarily in any real order - I did read T&S first, followed by 91W, and 4LW...after that it’s just a shit show of Long or Short, Destiel or Cockles - smorgasbord. Some of these are the most popular Fics out there, and others I’ve never seen recc’d anywhere (just sort of accidentally happened upon them).  So let’s get to it, shall we?
Twist and Shout - ok look. I understand the stigma associated with this one, but it was the FIRST one I read. It was the ball that shot me down the hill, and I haven’t stopped since. So. I loved it. I CRIED like a baby. SOBBED. It was not the quality of the writing but the way the story was developed and delivered. I have Never Cried Like This Reading a Story IN MY LIFE. It’s a rite of passage. Read It and have an opinion - it doesn’t need to be mine.

Ninety-One Whiskey - aka 91W, it is mentioned so much, and is SO worth the read.  I continued my dive into the war fics (not typically my bag really and here I was reading 2 in a row).  There are a couple of followup stories as well to this series (and yes, I’ve read them all).  Although I’ll say that the original is my favourite. I often got lost in a bit of the War/Tactical descriptions, but would recommend it to anyone anyway. Ugh...the “stolen moments”...they were at the same time tragic and the most amazing things ever.  You feel me? no? go read it.

Four Letter Word for Intercourse - aka 4LW.  OMG just, OMG. I loved this story. I loved it so much. I think I read it in a day.  Devoured it. It’s so HOT. Just read it. If you haven’t you’re missing out.  LEMME AT IT. I loved “knowing the secret”, and had some major anxiety about that realization dawning (I had to take a breath, and be like, no, no, this is gonna be a mess, but it’s gonna be SO GOOD - I was not disappointed).  There’s more than one work here too - read them all. PLEASE.
Author: bendingsignpost  https://archiveofourown.org/works/16086839/chapters/37568591
Memories Bring Back Memories (Bring Back You) - This was the first Sobs one I read, but it sent me on a spree.  this is the Memory Loss one.  I have one piece of advice here - read everything by Sobsicles. You can thank me later...just go to her page, and fucking sort to supernatural (or not, read it all!) I’d list them but I’d fucking seriously be here all day.  Also, her tags make me laugh so hard.
Author:  sobsicles https://archiveofourown.org/works/24022945/chapters/57796885
Orpheus - I love this one too, Tattooed!Cas, my LOVE. paired with Mechanic!Dean, my HEART, #help.  Read this one in one evening as well. (I was on a roll).  It’s a one night stand that turns into more (much like my last relationship)....hmm...maybe this is why I was pulled in - although to be fair that is the last similarity to my shitty love life! I do not remember how I stumbled onto this one (tattooed Cas may have been the draw...tbh). Read the warnings though, there is some triggering stuff in this one - but if you can handle it, it’s definitely worth the read.
Author: sysrae       https://archiveofourown.org/works/2364347/chapters/5220227
Have Love, Will Travel - Can you say no to Stripper!Dean? Cause I sure as hell cannot. Typical sort of character development here with Dean having trust issues, and Cas being painfully awkward...(but in like a super cute way?).  Would Recommend.
Author: squeemonster   https://archiveofourown.org/works/565455/chapters/1011747
The Inexhaustible Silence of Houses - Change of pace here...It’s got a nice twist.  I didn’t actually clue into how it was going to end until very near the end (maybe I was being oblivious), when the realization came over me and I was...man. I was DONE IN.  I hope that doesn’t spoil (I need some kind of way of remembering them). Voiceless!Cas Hunter!Dean
Author: Askance (doomcountry)   https://archiveofourown.org/works/560268/chapters/1000755
Adagio - This is super short, and super cute. Honestly, I would read the whole thing just for the last line. It’ll take you less than an hour if I remember correctly. Go, I’ll wait. I squeeed. did you?
Author: noangelsinthegarrison   https://archiveofourown.org/works/1397248/chapters/2928145
Any Little Heartache - super easy read (not in a bad way, but in a ‘you’ll fly through it’ way).  It’s mid-length, not graphic, but really fun hospital AU. HeartSurgeon!Dean / Nurse!Cas - enemies to lovers anyone? Fuck you to Fuck me? yeah. YUM.
Author: followthattardis https://archiveofourown.org/works/5143376/chapters/11838311
Ad Astra - This is another short(ish) one, just one chapter.  And by that I mean that this is written like a very long poem. Cas as a star who has visited Dean many times over the years of his life, that culminates in 4x01 barn scene. It’s ‘awe’ sad. ‘puppy dog eyes’ sad. The writing format took me a bit to understand what was happening - it’s my lack of poetry knowledge, not the writing.
Author: nhixxie https://archiveofourown.org/works/1013491
Ad Astra Per Aspera - This is a cute story.  ESL writer, no judgement.  I found this while looking for the one above, and thought the premise looked cute - and it was. Misunderstanding leading to Dean realizing he’s actually Bi.  Miscommunication leading to realization.
Author: Riverchester https://archiveofourown.org/works/12354336/chapters/28101816
Psalm 40:2 - Time travel post-canon Cas and Pre-series Dean.  If you’re wondering how that works, strap in for this ride, it’s well worth it.
Author: unicornpoe https://archiveofourown.org/works/30786425/chapters/75992444
Addicted to You - Warlock!Dean/Incubus!Cas - accidental ‘mating’ (I actually really don’t like that word, but there’s sort of no avoiding it in this situation). Cute story.  When you drunk dial a succubus and get an incubus instead...Whatever will we do?
Author: Ltleflrt https://archiveofourown.org/works/4387346/chapters/9959288
A Glimpse Beyond - End Fix-it. Not yet complete, 10 chapters so far...I want MORE! Reliving memories Dean/Cas & Sam/Eileen.
Author: NorthernSparrow https://archiveofourown.org/works/27731689/chapters/67875925
Cas-ti-el - Please I want more...It’s like the story just started. Please write more of this story!! 1 chapter, it’s a trope prompt challenge, but I want it to be a full on story of its own. Imprinted names of their soul mates, Dean doesn’t understand his (because it’s in a different language)...I’m frustrated by wanting this story to keep going.
Author:  Valinde (Valyria)  https://archiveofourown.org/works/1941591
Our Bodies, Posessed by Light - another short one. Not going to lie, this one took a little getting used to, and I can’t say that I enjoyed it too much for the sole purpose that the premise gave me the willies.  Cas has to vessel jump - ends up in Sam...I got through it, it had a good ending, but yeah, sorry. This just wasn’t for me.
Author:  obstinatrix  https://archiveofourown.org/works/260289
Peanut Butter Pumpkin Wedding Cake - Waiter!Dean / Writer!Cas - This is so effing cute, just misunderstanding after misunderstanding bumbling around like the couple of dorks that they are. It’s only one chapter. 100% would recommend.
Author:  Sparseparsley https://archiveofourown.org/works/223962
Destiel, Actually - This is another super cute story, 5 chapters. Gabriel playing a singular role in putting Dean and Cas in awkward positions to push them together.  I fucking DIED at “oh, I am the sub” - needs context, but I guarantee you that you’ll laugh out loud...
Author:  Bexism  https://archiveofourown.org/works/399934/chapters/658398
The Smell Before the Rain - This was my first A/B/O - a big apology to all those who are into mpreg and whatnot, this was my lesson that I am not. this was not for me. Also - I’m a firm Cas (Alpha/Dom) believer, and i’m good with switch Cas, but it’s hard for me to take him being the full Omega here, when paired with the rest I just couldn’t do it. I finished it, but, not my thing. I know now.
Author: jscribbles https://archiveofourown.org/works/22355230/chapters/53406127
Crazy Diamonds - This is another short one, only 3 chapters - it’s a body swap for Dean, 4x02 him and 2018 him swap places (assumption that 2018 him is “with” Cas).  It’s a super cute little story.
Author:  pantheon_of_discord https://archiveofourown.org/works/16151642/chapters/37738631
The Breath of All Things - Wheelchair!Dean / Volunteer!Cas.  This is a lovely story, typical Dean self-hatred etc. Triggering for those with suicide warnings. It had me in tears at the end. There’s a really spectacular quote near the end that I found so romantic I screen grabbed it.
Author:  KismetJeska https://archiveofourown.org/works/994750/chapters/1967519
Kind of a Forever Deal - SummerCamp!AU This is just a really cute and fluffy summer camp AU.  Which is so different from 91W (That’s right, check the author)! I was a little disappointed with the ending, but otherwise really enjoyed this all the way through and was loving all the discovery and young characterizations of all the characters.
Author: komodobits https://archiveofourown.org/works/999291/chapters/1978478
Everytown, USA - Best way I can break this one down? Wanderer!Dean (listless and without a place in the world, he ends up in a small town...), Twin!Cas (that leads to some fun things). There are a number of points where you’re gonna yell at Dean for doing stupid shit (that are very much in character for him to do), you think, well, yes, obviously you’re going to do that you silly fucking boy [affectionate]; but whyyy? (but we know).
Author: aileenrose https://archiveofourown.org/works/1797559/chapters/3854836
Chalk and Chainmail - HighSchool!AU, Cas is an artist, Dean LARP’s - it’s cute and angsty.
Author:  lemonsorbae https://archiveofourown.org/works/804704/chapters/1517551
A Little Patience - Ok. you want smut? This is your story. You want Kink? This is your story.  I actually did not finish this. It got a little carried away in my opinion. It was VERY panty kink oriented (which, while essentially canon isn’t really my kink) so, if you want that Panty Kink on full display? Go forth and enjoy! it  is thirty something chapters, I got to the mid-twenties I Think.
Author: riseofthefallenone https://archiveofourown.org/works/1750058/chapters/3739232
Control - I REALLY ENJOYED THIS. Which is saying a lot for someone who has already admitted that a Subby Cas isn’t really my HC - so to so thoroughly enjoy a Sub!Cas story? (maybe it’s the tattooes...*wink*). It’s an AU where Cas is the head of a company - Dean is a callboy I guess, for lack of a better term. Just read it.

Micah 1:1-4:13, Revelation 6:1-17, Psalms 134:1-3, Proverbs 30:1-4
Today is the 15th day of December welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I'm Brian it is a joy to be here with you today, center of the last month of the year, 10 days from now, a week and a half from now Christmas Day and we are continuing our journey forward in rapid fashion as we move through some of the shorter texts, especially in the Old Testament. We are already in the book of Revelation in the New Testament. So, we've reached our final book there, but we’ve got a ways to go in the Old Testament. So, we read the book of Jonah in its entirety yesterday, which brings us to the book of Micah, and this is halfway. So, this is the sixth of the 12 minor prophets that will conclude the Old Testament.
Introduction to the book of Micah:
And in terms of who Micah was, that…there is very little that's known. A little bit. The name Micah means “who is like God” We’re told in the text that he’s from the town of Moresheth and many biblical archaeologists associate this with Moresheth Gath which would…which would put Micah in the lowlands in the kingdom of Judah in the lowlands. And this is kind of the region where other famous stories in the Bible like David and Goliath happened. The book, as we’ll find out in just a minute tells us that the Lord gave the message to Micah of Moresheth and then lists Kings during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah when they were kings of Judah and that the visions that he had seen pertained to Samaria and Jerusalem. So, Samaria is the capital city of the northern kingdom of Israel. Jerusalem is the capital city of the southern kingdom of Judah. So, with the names of some of the kings incorporated into the text then we could date Micah to somewhere around the eighth century B.C. And then we also know that Micah has a brief mention in the book of Jeremiah. And Jeremiah was later. So, if all that I'm saying is correct Micah was still being quoted, Micah was still being referenced over a century later among the prophets when Jeremiah was doing his ministry. The book of Micah has a pattern, a prophetic pattern. There's like utterances of coming doom and judgment and then there are words of hope and restoration. That's a pattern that we see in a lot of the prophets. This is no different in Micah except that he does it three times in a row back-to-back in a short book. And, so, many scholars think that's a very intentional thing that's trying to be said beneath what's being said. Another thing of note about Micah is that Micah has promises in it of the coming messianic Messiah, deliverer. And, so, like it wasn't too long ago we read to the book of Hebrews in which the author continually says Jesus, basically Jesus was always supposed to come, you can see this thread through the prophets. Well, Micah would be one of those prophets. So, like Micah 5:2 is quoted in Matthew 2:5 and 6. “But, you all Bethlehem Ephrathah you are only a small village among all the people of Judah yet a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past will come from you”, right? So, this foretelling of the birth of Christ in Bethlehem. Jesus Himself quotes from Micah when He is talking about his own ministry and what it’s supposed to do, like that He's bringing down or exposing the world system. So, in Micah, “don't imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth. I came not to bring peace but a sword.” So, we recognize those words coming from Jesus, but Jesus was quoting Micah. But by the time we get done with reading the book of Micah, which will be tomorrow it should be pretty clear that God has no interest…in fact, is completely displeased with corruption and idolatry and rebellion and people who use their power or misuse their power to exploit the vulnerable or the less fortunate. But God is also perhaps even more passionate about hope and restoration for those who stay true. And, so, we begin. And we will read the first four chapters of the book of Micah. We’re reading from the Good News Translation this week.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for Your word. It's an everyday thing and we will never not be grateful because it has changed us and shaped us, and it continues to inform us, and it doesn't matter what year it is, it doesn't matter what day or week it is, You are always present speaking to us through Your word and it becomes such a mirror to our own hearts. It reveals us to ourselves in ways that…that You're…only Your Holy Spirit can do. And, so, we are grateful for that and we invite that. And as we continue this journey, we open ourselves, even as the days get busier, even as the world out there invites us to continue to close down because there’s just too much going on. We open ourselves fully to You. Nothing is off limits to You. So, come Holy Spirit, plant the words of the Scriptures in the soil of our hearts today. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Announcements:
dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it's the website, it’s where you find what's going on around here.
And we’ve been talking about Christmas being the thing that's going on around here because that is…that it's what's happening around here, everywhere around the world. And, so, it's Christmas time in…around the Global Campfire as well. And, so, a couple things. We’ve been talking about the…the Daily Audio Bible Shop and the 2020 ornament. If you spend $40 or more in the Daily Audio Bible Shop, that is all true other than to say probably we’re not gonna have any more ornaments past tomorrow for sure, maybe…maybe not passed today. So, if, yeah…you know, if you were maybe kinda procrastinating a little bit and thought maybe you should check out the Daily Audio Bible Shop because you wanted that then check out…check it out today. Of course, once we run out of ornaments the Shop will still be open as long as we still have some…some stuff left. And, so, we will gladly continue to send…to send anything that…that you want from the Shop out. But I'm just giving you a heads up.
The other thing that we’ve been talking about is the annual Daily Audio Bible Christmas party that we do. And, so, we’ve been calling in our holiday greetings into the community here by using the prayer line apparatus, the phone number and the Hotline in the app. Tomorrow is going to be the last day for that. It’s a pretty good sized job to edit it all together and piece all of the pieces together so that we can have this virtual party and want to do that before Christmas, obviously. And, so, tomorrow will be the last day that we will be taking holiday greetings. So, if you’ve been procrastinating on that then now would be the time. You can…well…you can use the Hotline button in the app, which is the red button up at the top or…or you can dial 877-942-4253. And as I’ve been saying, there's really only one rule. That's…that's the prayer line. So, that's what it's primary…it’s primary purpose is to encourage each other through prayer and to keep each other up to date on the things that we are struggling through so that we don't have to be alone in it all so that we can shoulder each other's burdens. If you have that going on, if there are some things to share definitely call in. Just don't make a holiday greeting and a prayer request in the same call. This is one of the rare times you can call in and then hang up and call back. You can call in your holiday greeting and then if you have a prayer or encouragement or prayer request then make that a separate call so that we can keep everything tidy and in order.
If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible, thank you, especially now as we’re moving into the final weeks of the year. Thank you for your partnership. If the Global Campfire…if the fact that we can come together each day and allow God's word to be read fresh and fresh over us, if that's…if that makes a difference then thank you, thank you for your partnership. There is a link on the homepage. If you are using the Daily Audio Bible app you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or, if you prefer, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.
And, as always, if you have a prayer request or encouragement, or holiday greeting right now, yup, the hotline button in the app is the place to go. You can’t miss it. It’s up at the top. Looks like a hotline button or you can dial 877-942-4253.
And that's it for today. I’m Brian I love you and I'll be waiting for you here tomorrow.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hey DAB family this is Byron out in Florida hope you all are doing well. Could use your help on something. As a lot of you know my youngest son Nehemiah is autistic and he goes to a special school and he’s been doing pretty well there but the schools been recommending that he gets additional behavioral therapy so that what they’re trying to do can work better. And, so, we’ve looked into it and it turns out that our insurance is not going to cover it but this is something that he really and truly needs. So, we’re going to move forward with it anyway. The numbers here are…are pretty large in an order of multiple thousand dollars a month and I’m not sure how were going to be able to pay for it but we’re gonna start it and see where it goes. So, I could use you guys’s prayers because I think this is best. We think this is best for him. We think the Lord is in it. We just don’t know how it’s going to add up at the bottom of the tiling. But God has promised to many things before. He has not forgotten us, and this is just the next step. So, we’re trusting Him for that but it’s not gonna happen without prayer. And, so, I would ask you guys to add your faith of mine and my wife’s faith and all the people that are surrounding Nehemiah to get him to where he needs to be in his particular development. So, praises to Him. He’s worthy of all of our praise. He’s never let us down. He’s never let you down. We come before Him in prayer and honor Him that He will take care of His children. So, thank you guys. I love you all and talk to you later.
Hello Daily Audio Bible prayer warriors this is only Tony. I’m calling tonight wishing that I could say a happy thing but I’m really calling for emergency prayers. I’m asking for prayers for my mother who has contracted Covid. Both my mother and father are in the hospital with Covid in the same room. My father is doing fair. My mother is doing very poorly. She’s really gasping for air and she’s very scared. She knows the Lord but she’s very scared. She’s afraid to go to sleep because she’s afraid that she won’t wake up. So, I’m asking if you would lift up Kathryn in New Jersey. I love her dearly and I just pray that God won’t take her at this point and give me more time with her. I ask that He would comfort her and ease her fears. Let her know that He is with and that He cares about her. So, if you would please lift up Kathryn in New Jersey I would appreciate it. I love you all. I thank you. I thank Brian for the wonderful year I’ve spent with you all. This is my first time calling and I just I pray that you would all have a Merry Christmas. My mother’s birthday’s is on the 18th of December and I pray that she makes it till then. Thanks very much. God bless.
Hello, my wonderful DAB family today is Saturday, December 11th and this is Rosie and it’s great to be free in Jesus. I’m calling in right now because I really need your prayers. I really need healing. I’ve been puttin’ up with a lot of pain and it just keeps getting worse and I just feel like I need my family to stand in the gap with me. There’s…I have pain in my back and in my knees and it’s moved to my feet. My toes feel like they’re on fire and I went to the doctor. He told me that I need to take extra vitamin B. Well, I’ve been doing that for the past month and the pains only getting worse. So, I’m having a hard time sleeping at night because of all the pain. So, I really need your prayers. And I really appreciate all of you, my family. And I appreciate Brian and Jill and China and the whole Hardin family for the wonderful community that you have made this and that you have let God lead you the whole way and we really do appreciate that and thank you family. God bless you.
Hello this is Wonderfully Made in Albuquerque I am calling in to pray for a woman who…she didn’t say her name, but she asked for prayers over just being distracted with everything that’s going on in the world that makes her sick I think and she’s having trouble with listening to the Bible and feeling God’s presence. And, so, today is I think this is from the December 11 reading actually. So, I’m calling in for you whoever your name is and I know that your…know that you’re not alone, that many struggle with this especially including myself. So, heavenly Father I pray for this woman and others who are struggling with the many distractions and what’s going on right now and who are weighed down. And also, those who don’t feel Your presence and who are discouraged by that who…who just need hope and I lift all of these up to You and this woman Lord and I praise You that You are greater than he who is in the world. And even those times when it feels like You’re not present You are present, and Your love will never let us go. And…and I praise You for the times where You do give us glimpses Lord and…and bless us with…with those feelings of Your presence. Yet faith is not about feeling or seeing. Faith is just moving forward and believing even when we can’t see and feel and everything. And thank You that Your spirit gives us…that You give us what we need in the moments that we need it. And I ask and pray for perseverance…
Hi Daily Audio Bible this is Carmen from Orlando Florida calling with a praise report. Thank you everybody who prayed for my husband who had Covid at the end of October. He spent five days at the hospital and then he spent another week at home and getting better every day. And, so, two weeks later he went back to work and his personalities been back and he’s, you know, he still had an inhaler to use and his breathing wasn’t all the way there. But he seems fine now. I never see him running short of breath or anything like that and he feels like his old self again and I am so so grateful. I don’t know how to thank God for his healing. I don’t know how to thank you guys for them. So, all I can do is be here and say thank you thank you so much. I send you all a virtual hug and I wish everybody a Merry Christmas and an awesome new year 2021. God bless you. Bye-bye.

“...when I think about mindfucks I think—as a former Evangelical—about Evangelical Christianity, which traffics, wholesale, in mindfuckery...
1. It’s not a religion, it’s a relationship (with your imagination...!). ...it’s one of Evangelicalism’s favorite ways of saying, We’re not like all those other (obviously false) faith-based belief systems. We just love Jesus and Jesus loves us, and he loves you, too. From the inside, this relationship thing feels really real and really good. But from the outside it’s a bunch of transparent hooey. Your born-again Christianity is a love relationship—with a character whose name and history you got from a set of ancient texts that were compiled and handed down by a vast hierarchical organization that once torched dissenting texts (and people). And this not-religion has sacred writings and rituals and leaders and schools of systematic theology, and it dictates what people are supposed to believe and how they’re supposed to behave. And it provides all the same social functions and structures as religions.
2. That’s the OLD Testament. In my childhood Bible, the Old Testament is bound together with the New Testament in a gold-stamped blue leather cover with these words on the title page, “The words of Scripture as originally penned in the Hebrew and Greek . . . are the eternal Word of God.” This statement is followed by a verse from the Old Testament book of Isaiah. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever (Is 40:8).To Evangelicals, the Old Testament is the timeless Word of God, except when the vile atrocities described there become inconvenient or when people quote horrible verses—say those that demean women, endorse slavery, condemn homosexuality and shellfish eating, promote the idea of Chosen bloodlines, or make statements that are scientific nonsense. Then it’s just the Old Testament, and Evangelicals pull out all kinds of fancy “supersessionist” language to explain that those verses don’t really count because of the “new covenant” or the “Dispensation of Grace.” But just try suggesting that a Bible believer take the Old Testament out of the Holy Bible.
3. Yes, no, maybe. God answers prayer. Except when he doesn’t. The New Testament says, And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive  (Matthew 21:22; Mark 11:24). But everybody knows that in the real world that doesn’t happen. Christians face bankruptcies and bad test scores and death at the same rate as other people. God answers prayer at the margins of statistical significance, if at all—even when parents are asking for their kids to get healed from cancer, or kids are pleading that parents stop hitting them. How does one explain that? The age-old Christian answer has been that when your prayers aren’t answered you should doubt yourself rather than God, assuming that your faith was too weak or you wanted something you shouldn’t. But Evangelicals have come up with something even more clever: God does always answer! It’s just that he sometimes says no, or maybe, instead of yes. That ask anything and it shall be done Bible verse really meant, ask selectively and he might say yes.
4. Be selfless for your own sake. If you want to be great in God’s kingdom, learn to be the servant of all, say the lyrics to one Christian song. Got that? “If you want to be great,” not “if you want to do the most good in the world.” Granted, learn to be the servant of all beats some other paths people take when they seek status, but it is a path to status nonetheless, which is why the church is full of self-proclaimed servant leaders who actually aspire to great man or woman status.
5. Christianity is humble. According to Catholic theology, pride is one of the seven deadly sins. Evangelical preachers tell us it was Satan’s original sin. Pride cometh before the fall, so humble yourself before God. Couple this claim about humility with the idea that you should preach [your version of] the gospel to every creature—and things get turned inside out and upside down.Famed Puritan hellfire-and-brimstone minister Jonathan Edwards said, “We must view humility as one of the most essential things that characterizes true Christianity.” Edwards also expounded with righteous certitude about the torments of the wicked in hell—wicked meaning anyone who didn’t share his Puritan beliefs.Anyone who has spent much time in an Evangelical church community knows that superior humility can be a powerful form of one-upmanship. But competitive humility aside, what could possibly be more arrogant than thinking the universe was made for mankind, that only we bipedal primates are made in the image of God, that all other sentient beings are here for us to use, that you happened to be born into the one true faith among the tens of thousands of false ones, and that the force that created the laws of physics wants a personal relationship with you.
6. Christianity isn’t sexist; God just has different intentions and rules for men and women. Just because in the Old Testament God (identified by the male pronoun) makes man first, puts men in charge (male headship), gives men the right to barter women and take them as war booty doesn’t mean they’re unequal. Just because the New Testament forbids women to speak in church, tells them to cover their heads and submit to men, and excludes them from leadership positions doesn’t mean that women are inferior to men!
The Bible may be rife with stories with predominantly male protagonists. It may show women competing to have sons. Genealogies may be determined by paternity. God may convey his word exclusively through male writers and may take the form of a male human. But that doesn’t mean men and women are unequal! They’re just “different.” All of those generations of Patriarchs and Church Fathers and Reformers and Preachers who said vile things about women—they just misunderstood the Bible’s message on this point.
7. Believe and be saved. Right belief, according to Evangelicalism, is the toggle that sends people to heaven or hell—as if we could simply make ourselves believe whatever we want, regardless of the evidence, and as if the ability to do so were a virtue. Right belief makes you one of the Righteous. Wrong belief makes you one of the Wicked. God may have given you the ability to think, but you follow logic and evidence where they lead only at your own eternal peril. If you don’t believe, it’s because you secretly just don’t want to.Granted we all are prone to a greater or lesser degree, to what psychologists call “motivated belief,” meaning we have a tendency to selectively seek evidence for things we either want to be true or, more rarely, fear to be true. But this is hardly a sign of robust character or moral virtue. Quite the opposite.
8. God loves you and he’ll send you to hell. And once you die, it’s all irreversible. George Carlin put it best: Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man … living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you. He loves you and he needs money.
OK, Carlin didn’t have his theology right, at least not from an Evangelical standpoint. You don’t go to hell for violating the Ten Commandments. You go to hell for not accepting Jesus as your savior. But yeah, he loves you, loves you, loves you, and if you don’t love him back and worship him and accept his gift of forgiveness for your imperfection, he’s going to torture you forever. Wrap your brain around that definition of love.
9. Free choice under duress. Why is the world full of sin and suffering if God is all powerful and all good? Because he wanted us to worship him of our own free will. He loves us too much to force us, so we had to be able to choose—so the story goes. But, if what he wanted was love and adoration, freely given, then why did he entice us with promises of heaven and threaten us with eternal torture? Can someone really love you if you demand their love at gunpoint?
10. Lean not unto your own understanding. Faith is just believing. Trust and obey. Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong (1 Corinthians 16:13). The fool has said in his heart there is no God (Psalm 14:1).
The idea that your own mind, logic, and the evidence in the world around you is not to be trusted may be Evangelicalism’s biggest mindfuck, because it is subtext in all the others. Any doubts are just evidence that your mind (and basic human decency) are shaky. Since doubt is a sign of weak faith—and sometimes even direct from the devil—you should never ever trust what you think, feel, see or experience over what the Bible says and the Church teaches. Walk by faith, not by sight. Stop asking questions! “

Awesome of the Year 2018: The Books
Tumblr media
Happy New Year! ‘Tis the season for year end lists left and right as we attempt to figure out the best of everything from 2018. And of course, as a fan of books, music, and movies, it’s only right to get in on the list-making. Over the next week or so, I’ll be sharing my 2018 favorite lists. First up: books! This year, I set my Goodreads reading challenge at 40 books, and actually passed it. I’ve been setting arbitrary book goals for years, but I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve succeeded since 2007. Probably because of all the graphic novels and comic trades I read this year WHICH TOTALLY COUNT BTW. Ahem. Anyway. This isn’t really a best of 2018 list so much as a Here’s a Bunch of Books I Really Liked in 2018 list, split up into categories. I hope you’ll find something interesting here, especially if you’re looking for ways to spend bookstore or Amazon gift cards you got for Christmas… ;)
Tumblr media
Newish Books by Rad Christian Women:
Every Arbitrary Book Goal should have a small correlated goal attached. This year mine was to make sure I read at least 50% women authors… and there have been a lot of GREAT new books from women writers in the past few years. If the “Christian women” section of your local bookstore makes you cringe a little inside too, check out these three wonderful books, all released in the past couple years:
Courage, Dear Heart by Rebecca K. Reynolds (NavPress, 2018)
Anyone who has read Rebecca’s writing knows she needed to write a book. She has a sharp mind, a poet's soul, a scientist's eye, and the most beautiful, tender heart. Also, she's an incredible writer who loves her readers with a love that radiates off every page. Buy a copy for everyone you know.
Wearing God by Lauren F. Winner (HarperOne, 2017) Girl Meets God was a formative book in my early 20s, and I’ve always meant to read more from this author, but somehow haven't. I finally picked up this one and oh man, for a solid month afterward I couldn’t stop thinking about it. With the eye of a scholar and the heart of a poet, Winner draws on personal stories, deep Biblical study, and a love of language to explore lesser known metaphors for God. Liturgy of the Ordinary by Tish Harrison Warren (InterVarsity Press, 2016)
Several years ago, James K.A. Smith’s Desiring the Kingdom helped me see liturgy in a new way, as not just religious practice, but the embedded routines that shape us. In this book, Tish Warren brings that idea to life as she walks through an ordinary day explores the holiness in our most mundane moments of living. You may not look at brushing your teeth or losing your keys the same way again.

Good Stories
This year, fiction reading was… all over the place? I don’t know if I read much that was OMG amazing, but here are a few that were fun…
The Fairyland Series 2-5 by Catherynne M. Valente (Feiwel & Friends, 2012-2015)
I am notoriously awful at finishing book series. I read the first Fairyland book maybe… two years ago? Yikes. Just finished the last one and wow, so fun. Colorful characters, a whimsical narrator, crazy locations, and a whole lot of heart make this Victorian fairytale meets contemporary fantasy a delight to read.
Til We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis (Harcourt, 1956)
Lewis’ contemporary retelling of the Cupid and Pschye myth through the eyes of Psyche’s jealous sister Orual. Second read for me, and even better this time around. Pretty sure this is Lewis’ storytelling at his best.
Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw (Orbit, 2017)
This was a year to embrace fun, nerdy reads. So there was the Star Trek spoof Redshirts (with a plot twist I totally saw coming... and I am not good at guessing plot twists) and my first trip into the Star Wars extended book universe (or whatever the heck they call it these days) and… this. A story about a doctor for the undead in London, trying to solve the mysteries surrounding a murderous cult and keep her monster friends safe. Not the greatest, but a fun Halloween read. I’ll get to the sequel eventually. (See also: bad at finishing book series.)
Tumblr media
Poetry for Everyone
Another new reading practice this year: always keeping a poetry book on the bedside table. Poetry books are best for leisurely dipping in and out rather than reading cover to cover. If you think poetry is only for the ivory towers, give these writers a try and think again.
A Child's Year by Christopher Yokel (Independent, 2018)
Okay, I’m biased here, but hey! Chris quietly released a new poetry book into the world this fall, and I’m a big fan of Chris AND his poems. A Child’s Year is a season cycle, sort of like his last book A Year in Weetamoo Woods, but this time it’s anchored by a four part poem recalling the journey of seasons through childhood eyes. And according to our friend Kirsten’s 7-year-old son, he gets the experience right. ;)
The Jubilee by John Blase (Bright Coppers Press, 2017) For his 50th birthday, John Blase released his first poetry book, with a poem for every year of life. It’s rare for me to make it through an entire collection start to finish but these were just so good. There are poems about aging — the author’s and his parents’ — and poems that evoke wide spaces and natural wonder. There are psalms and parables, and meditations on dying and, yes, living. All of them finely tuned with wisdom, gentle grace, and a touch of humor in all the right places. How I Discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson (Dial Books, 2014)
When I heard Marilyn Nelson read her poem “Thirteen-Year-Old American Negro Girl” on the On Being podcast, I was captivated. And when I found this lovely hardcover in a used bookstore back home in Florida, I knew I needed to read more. This is a memoir in poetry about growing up in a black military family during the American Civil Rights era, told with gentle lyricism, warmth, and humor. Plus, the book itself is lovely with whimsical illustrations and family photos.
Tumblr media
Comics!
I’m always on a quest to get more comics in my life. Plus knocking out a whole series in a couple weeks is a solid way to pad out your Arbitrary Book Goal.
Amulet 1-7 by Kazu Kibuishi (Graphix, 2008-2016)
After their father’s tragic death, Emily and Navin move with their mom to a strange old house that belonged to their great-grandfather… and so the adventure begins. In this fantasy series, the two kids find themselves in an underground world of demons, robots, talking animals, and a dangerous and powerful Amulet. A captivating and beautifully illustrated fantasy tale. Ms. Marvel 1-5 by G. Willow Wilson (Marvel, 2014-2016)
Y’all, I super want to be a Marvel nerd. But alas, I can't keep up, so I get my sister to loan books to me. Ms. Marvel is my new fave. A Pakistani-American girl from Jersey City has the power to grow, shrink, and stretch her body at will. So she’s trying to fight crime, keep up at school, and well, stay out of trouble with her parents. So fun. (Dear Disney: I really want this kid to show up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. before it gets canceled kthxbye.)
The Legend of Wonder Woman by Ranae De Liz and Ray Dillon (DC Comics, 2016)
Weren’t we all mildly obsessed with Wonder Woman after the 2017 film? Another one I borrowed from my sister. A solid take on Diana’s origin story that’s accessible for comic n00bs (ahem, like me) who can’t figure out where to begin with beautiful art and a lot of heart.
The Classic I Finally Read
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen I always try to tackle either a thick intimidating novel or an unread classic in the wintertime. This year, I worked on my Austen deficiency and discovered I relate a little too much to Elinor Dashwood.
Tumblr media
What’s Next?
In the new year, I think my goal is less about numbers and more about reading widely. I liked the 50% women authors goal because it helped me actively choose to support women writers. This year, hoping to read more books by authors of color, explore some new ideas and genres, and hopefully do a better job reading deeply and taking notes. I’ve got my eye on Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge too, perhaps as a way to dig into new things I wouldn’t normally notice. And yeah... perhaps a monthly reading life update is a thing I can do here on the blog. :)
If you’re curious to see the full list of What I Read This Year and follow along with me in 2019, feel free to follow me on Goodreads!
What were some of your favorite reads in 2018? And what are your goals for the new year? I’d love to hear all about it in the comments!

Faith: A Personal Journey to Understanding
by Thomas A Ernst, Peoria, Arizona
My six siblings and I had the privilege of being raised by godly parents in a Christian home. From a very early age, we memorized Scripture – whole chapters or individual verses. Our parents believed the words of the Psalmist: “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee” ~ Psalm 119:11. Now, as I draw closer to the finish line of this life, Paul’s words come to mind “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7.
It would be nice to be able to define with understanding, exactly what it is that Paul kept; don’t you think? How many who claim “faith” as an integral part of their lives can actually define it? Yet, it is to be the bedrock as well as the guiding light of our lives. “The just shall live by faith” ~Habakkuk 2:4 – and repeated at least three times in the New Testament. Can you define it? In order to define it we have to understand it. Too many use a synonym to put substance to faith: belief or trust. If we are honest with ourselves, while those words have meaning and indeed are facets of faith they don’t convey the understanding we need for a definition. Then again there are those who are satisfied with a cursory definition and ask, “What’s the big deal?” “Why is being able to define something so important?”
It has been said (when and by whom other than here and by me, I have no clue) that if you can’t define something then you don’t really understand it. In other words, definition and understanding are integral to each other. I believe that. I’m a math teacher and there are basically two ways to teach math: by rote i.e. learn the formula etc or by understanding. The US is failing miserably in its educational attempts to bring students to understanding. The reason, in my humble opinion, is because you cannot fully engage the mind in the latter without a rudimentary knowledge of the former, meaning memorized math facts. It would be like trying to get a child to increase their reading comprehension skills without ever having learned to read – yeah, that’s the elephant in the Language Arts room. We’re failing at understanding because we haven’t learned the basics. That holds true pretty much across the board. You don’t want a doctor who has simply memorized the symptoms coupled with disease names and the correct pharmaceutical aid that will help solve the problem. No, you want a doctor that understands how the body works and why certain drugs have good affects and others don’t. The same is true with “faith”. If we don’t understand it; if we can’t define it; then, how can we use it to live? Consider these verses:
“To each is given a measure of faith…” ~Romans 12:3.
“Faith without works is dead…” ~James 2:26.
“Without faith it is impossible to please God…” ~Hebrews 11:6.
“Walk by faith and not by sight…” ~2 Corinthians 5:7.
“Faith comes by hearing…” ~Romans 10:17.
“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed …” ~Matthew 17:20.
“When the son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth…” ~Luke 18:8.
Note that last one. What a sobering thought!
I can remember asking the question of my dad during our home bible study: “What is faith?” He answered with a quote from Scripture. Unsatisfied, I asked the same question of my Sunday School teacher: “What is faith?” He too answered with Scripture. As a young teen, I was part of a larger group of young people called Youth for Christ. It was a national organization seeking to evangelize and bring young people into a relationship with God. At one of our bible studies, I again raised my question to the leader: “What is faith?” and again the response was Scripture. Interestingly enough all the quotes as answers to my question were from the Faith Chapter, Hebrews 11 – a chapter my siblings and I had memorized years before. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” ~Hebrews 11:1. I came away from each of those encounters with two thoughts: First, I was impressed with the spiritual depth of those answering and second, with my own lack of depth because I still didn’t get it; and, it wouldn’t be until years later that I came to understand that they didn’t get it either!
Fast-forward a number of years. I’m now in my 40’s, a Pastor leading a small bible study and someone raises the question: “Pastor, what is faith?” Wouldn’t you know it! I stepped into the same void of lack of understanding as my mentors had and I answered with Scripture: “Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things unseen”. At that point I knew that just as I didn’t know the definition of faith, my mentors didn’t either. I locked myself in my study and tried to bring understanding to my lack of the same. I had lots of books and I perused them diligently and I gleaned a lot of opinions but no concrete definition that would satisfy and solve this spiritual equation.
Over the years, one of the things I have learned both by books and by experience is that the meaning of stated thoughts is in the mind of the author. In other words, your perception of what I said may or may not match what I meant. Now get this because our Society is giving lie to this great truth: our perception is not necessarily the meaning. Our perception may be wrong. We have filters, rose tinted glasses if you will; and, things we hear someone say pass through those filters in being processed into what we understand as what the speaker meant. We can be spot on or miss it completely or anything in-between. Today, perception is King – meaning be damned! Listen to the Pundits espouse on what someone meant: Spin, obfuscation, fake news and bold-faced lies all pass as the true meaning of what the speaker meant and the reality is, in all probability none of it is! When was the last time you heard someone ask for clarification about something that was said? Most times the speaker is never given the chance to explain as the spinners rush to be the loudest voice in denouncing the speaker. It’s everywhere: Politics, Media, Courts, Business board meetings and now to the detriment of all, Social Media! Don’t get me started on the morass of “I misspoke” – what the heck does that mean?
Truth lies trampled in the streets (Isaiah 59:14), meaning and even intent be damned!
“When the son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth…?” Will he find faith on the earth? Pastor, what is faith? I was ashamed because I had given the stock Christian response bolstered by the use of Scripture. I was determined to find out; yet, my search in others’ understanding or lack of it proved futile. Finally I remembered: Meaning is in the mind of the author. So simple. So profound yet I had never asked the Author, What is faith? “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” ~Hebrews 12:2. There is no doubt, at least among Christians, that Jesus lived a life of faith. “Search the Scriptures” he said, “These are they which testify of me…” ~John 5:39. He said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free…” ~John 8:32. So, I searched the Scriptures and I asked the Author “What is faith?” And He showed me. He answered me and helped me create a definition. Welcome to my journey!
According to the verse most quoted in giving definition to faith, Hebrews 11:1, faith is a gateway to understanding our world. Whether the world viewed through a telescope or the one viewed through a microscope or the one seen with the naked eye “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God”. In other words, without faith as a component there will be no understanding of our universe. Stephen Hawking, noted intellectual physicist, set out to understand the origins of our universe; and, in his latest book, published after his death, he concluded: “There is no God”. In spite of his astounding intellect, he missed it completely. The shepherd king, David, said, “The heavens declare the glory of God the firmament shows his handiwork. Day unto day utters speech and night unto night shows knowledge. There is no speech nor language where his voice is not heard” ~Psalm 19:1-3. David marveled at it, Stephen missed it. Both had a measure of faith. Both saw the same things, although Stephen saw with greater depth and clarity of physical sight i.e. the Hubble telescope. Faith, understanding it, defining it or exercising it is not a matter of degree of intellect. The critical question becomes: “Is faith an integral part of our understanding?” – spiritual and physical!
Why is faith so important? I know a few people who couldn’t care less about understanding the universe. So, what’s the big deal? Well, according to that writer of Hebrews 11; “Without faith it is impossible to please God” ~Hebrews 11:6. And if God’s not pleased and we’re trying to please Him with our good works and do so without faith, it’s a bit like arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. It’s futile. Our end is certain doom because if God’s not pleased, we’re toast – um…literally!
You’ve been very patient in wading through all this to this point and I won’t keep you in suspense any longer. When I searched the scriptures for meaning of faith I looked specifically at Jesus. I then compared what I found out about His life with those other “heroes of the faith” mentioned in Hebrews 11. Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and others. Lo and behold, their experiences matched what I found out about Jesus. Their “walk of faith” had the same components. Understanding personal faith reveals why Abel is a faith-hero and Cain is not. Why Jacob is in that list and Enoch is not.
Here is what I found:
Jesus said, “I only do what God shows me to do” ~John 5:19. And “I only say what God tells me to say” ~John 8:28. In other words, Jesus said and did what God told Him to say and do. He told His disciples, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” ~Matthew 4:4. We are also instructed by the Apostle Paul that “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” ~Romans 10:17. Faith then, is a result of hearing the word of God.
In New Testament era Greek, there are two words translated as “word” in English: Those Greek words are Logos and Rhema. Logos is universal, meaning everything said; and, Rhema is specific to time and place. Both are used in relation to God’s speaking and both are used in relation to faith. In our simplified understanding, Logos would be the Bible, and the works of creation and Rhema would be specific words that God reveals to us. Now, those specific words, Rhema, can come from anywhere or anyone; but, there is a knowing in our spirit that the Author is God. I have at times been rebuked by a kind word from someone but the knowledge in my spirit was that it was a rebuke or encouragement, as the case may be, from God. Yes, He still speaks and when He does it’s Rhema, specific to our cause, need or situation. Jesus lived by both the Logos and the Rhema the general and the specific. He did so everyday of His life; He lived, he walked by faith. When you look at the Old Testament heroes of faith, the Old Testament prophets or the New Testament disciples and apostles you see they did the same. Paul knew the Logos from God but he wasn’t applying it until he received a Rhema on his way to Damascus and was converted. How can we define that? In the former he heard (in a general sense of understanding) in the latter he heeded the specific word. That was his faith in action. Had he ignored and not heeded he would not have been converted. That’s why James can say with power that faith without a result (i.e. works) is dead. A lot of people know what the Bible says but they don’t heed it – a difference between darkness and light. James went on to say that even the devils believe and they tremble ~James 2:19. So faith is more than the synonym “believe” “He that has ears to hear let him hear [heed]…” ~Matthew 11:5.
When we take all that Jesus is and did and then take the Scriptures that teach us that faith is rooted in God’s Logos and Rhema we can define it. Now, doing so may limit the ability of faith to grow beyond a static definition that is why care must be exercised and we must realize that a definition is often only the starting point of deeper understanding. Like the mustard seed that becomes a gigantic plant. Our definition is just the seed. Here it is:
Faith is HEARING a WORD (Logos and Rhema) FROM God; and, HEEDING the WILL of God. Not with the HEAD but from the HEART!
That truth has given me a freedom to understand that I had never experienced. Check it out and then ask God to make the definition unique to you.

Exodus 28:1-43, Matthew 25:31-26:13, Psalms 31:9-18, Proverbs 8:12-13
Today is the 8th day of February, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it's great to be here with you as we close down another one of our weeks together. I'm grateful that we have the opportunity to…yeah…to finish well. So, we’ve been reading from the Voice translation this week, which is what we will continue to do today. And we are still at Mount Sinai, the mountain of God with the children of Israel and God is upon the mountain explaining to Moses what He would like this new culture that is being built, His chosen people, what He would like this to look like. Today, Exodus chapter 28.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for Your word, we thank You for bringing us through another week successfully. We are so grateful for all that You are speaking to…into our lives thus far this year. So, as we seal this week and close the door and it becomes a part of our past, a part of our history, we look forward to all that You have yet to speak to us in the coming days and in the coming weeks. So, we worship You and we give You our gratitude. We love You and we thank You and we pray these things in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Announcements:
dailyaudiobible.com is home base, it's the website, it’s…well…it's where you find out what’s going on around here. It's our virtual home for our Global Campfire community. And, so, yeah there are resources there in the Shop that are created just for the journey that we are on. And definitely links to different places to interact.
And it's to remind you that the Daily Audio Bible is a family of programs. Like, maybe if English isn’t your native language, there's Daily Audio Bible in Espanola or French or Japanese or any number of languages but there’s also other English programs like Daily Audio Bible Chronological. My daughter, China is just doing a fantastic job. She's been at this with me…I mean only a couple years less than me. Her whole life has been centered around reading the Bible. And, so, she's growing up and leading a community through to the Bible in chronological order.
There’s also Daily Audio Bible Psalm and Daily Audio Bible Proverbs. Those are like vitamins because like listening to the Daily Audio Bible we’re going through a section of Scripture each day, we’re talking about it, we’re applying it to our lives, we’re getting history, we’re getting context. But the Psalms and the Proverbs, it's like a chapter a day. So, you can go through the entire book of Proverbs in a month. It’ll take you like less than five minutes a day to do it, or the Psalms is just a couple of minutes. And, so, they’re like vitamins that we can have throughout the day. Just get the Scriptures speaking into our lives and transforming us. So, check all that out. It's a…it's a big roaring Global Campfire that warms us and there's…there’s plenty of warmth to go around. So, check that out.
If you want to partner with the Daily Audio Bible you can do that at dailyaudiobible.com. The link is right on the homepage. If you’re using the app, you can press the Give button in the upper right-hand corner or if you like the mail better, the mailing address is PO Box 1996 Spring Hill Tennessee 37174.

And that's all for today. I'm Brian I love you and I'll be waiting for you here tomorrow.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hi my name is __ and I have been a DABber for about 10 years and this is the first time I’ve called in. Today I am asking for prayer for my son who is in his 40s and he’s morbidly obese and starting to develop the disease processes that occur with obesity. I have prayed for years and all things only become worse. I can see the road ahead will be difficult for him if things do not change. I’m asking all to flood the heavens with prayer and petition asking for God’s intervention. Please pray for diet change, exercise, healing, sleep, and stress relief all things needed to obtain the goal of healthy living. Thank you so very much.
Good morning it is February 1st this is Sheryl from southeastern Washington. I just got through listening to the Daily Audio Bible for February 1. I thank you Brian and Joe for this ministry. I just heard a prayer request from Charisse who’s 32 years old and was in an accident January 6th who lost her husband and has little ones at home. Charisse I just wanted to let you know I’m praying for you and I know there are many, many, many other DAB family members who are praying for you also. I have hardly…no words to say but just to let you know that we’re praying for you and we will be praying for you, keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. And just keep in touch with us to let us know how you’re doing. Thank you. Love you all DAB family. Love you Charisse. Bye.
Constantine my name is Leslie I live in Missouri and I’m praying for you. [email protected]. I’d like to give a special shout out to Donny Vice. Thank you so much for your prayers, your love and continuous support. And once again Brian and the Hardin family thank you for this wonderful podcast for God’s Holy Spirit to flow. Keep flowing y’all.
Hello family DAB this is Timothy Pitt from Edinburgh in Scotland in the UK. I have called in before but so rarely that by way of introduction I first started listening to DAB in 2010. I was just desperate to listen to the Bible. I wanted to do it every day. I wanted it to be Audio and I wanted it of course to be the Bible. So, believe it not the words I actually typed in in my search were Daily Audio Bible and there it was. And I listened since 2010 although I’ve got a back catalog from 2006 in the origins. I’ve done DAB kids with my boys. I’m a double DABber with China and Ben as well. The main point of calling is along with the God of Your Story book, just to encourage everyone to stick at it. It is such an amazing resource to be able to listen to the Bible, to see the story, God’s story for us, and set out throughout the whole year. And the God of Your Story book, yes it absolutely encapsulates everything over the whole history a of DAB. The prayer community is flourishing, is tremendous. The Prayer Wall, wow! But yeah, just a quick encouragement to everyone. Everyone who, like me, rarely or never calls in, just put up your silent prayers, your local prayers, just put up your prayers. God hears us all. God loves us all and through this wonderful community of DAB we can come together to God. So, blessings to everyone.
Hello Daily Audio Bible family my name is Michael Davis I am one of the sons of Diana Davis the one that’s going through stage IV brain cancer right now. And, so, I’m calling in because I heard to prayer 2 requests on behalf of my mom one on January 30th I think and then the first prayer request of the February 1st prayer line. And, so, thank you so much for that. Whoever did call in to request prayers for my mom, thank you whether it was my mom herself or one of her our family members because I tried sending my prayer request in on January 9th or 10th but I don’t think mine went through, either that or I was just like asleep during one of the Daily Audio Bible broadcasts and didn’t get to hear prayers or something like that. But anyway, the story about my mom right now to give an update, as of February 2nd 12:56 AM she’s going through some irregular breathing patterns and she is just really unconscious. She can’t eat or drink anything. And, so, she’s probably about to pass away soon. And, so, if you guys can just keep praying about my mom and keep praying over our family that would be greatly appreciated because if my mom passes away, I want to make sure that my brother and I don’t get separated. I don’t really consider myself autistic anymore because I feel like I’ve healed myself through just eating a lot of watery rich fruits. And, so, my brother he’s on the middle part of the spectrum of autism though and my mom and dad are separated. I can talk to my dad anytime I want to on FaceTime so could my mom if she is, you know, ends up being conscious and whatnot. But it’s just our family is separated. Anyway if you guys could pray over my brother and I and especially my mom just make sure we’re not separated I would heavily appreciate that because of my brother and I got separated that it be very, very devastating for me especially.
Hello Daily Audio Bible I’m calling for Charisse who recently lost her husband in a motor vehicle accident and she herself has had three surgeries and is still in the hospital. Charisse, I am so, so, so sorry for what you have walked through and I want to lift you up to the Lord and I want to remind you that when Mary lost her brother Lazarus that Jesus wept with her, that you not only have the Daily Audio Bible praying for you but you also have our Lord praying for you. And that is my prayer, that He not only brings you all the comfort and the healing and the compassion and the strength that you need to get through this but also that you would be reminded every time you hug your twins and you hug your six-year-old that He’s holding you too, through each and every moment of this journey that you are now on. This world is broken, and we suffer in ways that are unimaginable at times, but Jesus never changes. He’s always faithful and He always remains ready to walk us through absolutely everything. Again, I’m so, so sorry but I will continue to lift you up in prayer as will the rest of the DAB family. I pray God blesses you and comforts you today dear friend. This is All the Treasures from Wyoming.

2 Samuel 22:1-23:23, Acts 2:1-47, Psalms 122:1-9, Proverbs 16:19-20
Today is the 4th day of June. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I’m Brian. It is a pleasure, it is an honor, it is the joy to come around the global campfire together with you and spend some time stepping away like we do every day from whatever's going on and just orient ourselves to God through His word. So, that's exactly what we’ll do. We have been spending time moving through David's story, King David, in the book of second Samuel, and we have just begun the book of Acts yesterday as we move forward into this story of the formation of the church and what happened right after Jesus ministry. So, we’ll get to that in a minute, but first second Samuel chapter 22 verse 1 through 23 verse 23. We’re reading from the New Living Translation this week.
Commentary:
Alright. So, in the book of acts today we witnessed earthmoving monumental things, right, Pentecost the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the birth of the church. So, Jesus followers had been praying together and waiting in one place, and according to tradition, this place is the same upper room where Jesus enjoyed His last supper. And the promised Holy Spirit fell upon them with the sound of a mighty rushing wind, and tongs or flames of fire over their heads and those present were given the ability speak in other languages. And then there were pilgrims from all over the known world. And if this upper room is the same upper room then it was on Mount Zion. And, so, pilgrims from all over the world would've been around and they heard the testimony of God's kindness spoken in their native tongue, which caused an incredible stir because these people were Galilean and how could they speak all these different languages and communicate so clearly? But Pentecost in the book of Acts gives us the first clue that the gospel was something that was to be spread throughout the entire world. It wasn't to be exclusive. It was to be spread to every nation and tongue. So, like, in this day and age we can say, “yeah, dah, like, of course, that's exactly…isn’t that one of the great missions of our faith?” But what this would mean at that time, like at this flashpoint, the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and God's goodness being spoken in all these other tongues, what this is gonna ultimately mean is gonna cause an incredible amount of controversy among the early church. And we’ll get to that as we journey through the book of Acts and into the letters of Paul. We’ll see all of this very clearly. The confusion triggered by the many tongues being spoken caused hearers to marvel but it caused others to scoff and accuse Jesus followers of being drunk. And this revealed the way that the message of hope in Jesus would continue to be opposed. So, as it was for Jesus, so it will be for the early believers and so it still is today. So, Peter gives this first recorded mass introduction to the gospel of Jesus and 3000 people believed and were baptized as a result. And, so, we can immediately see the change in Peter after having gone through Jesus death and burial and resurrection and ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. He's transformed and 3000 people, according to the book of Acts, were baptized into the faith that day. And, so, many scholars concluded that the only place, anywhere around there, anywhere even around Jerusalem for the most part, anyplace that many people could have been baptized would've been the mikvah or the ritual cleansing baths found at the temple complex. And the ruins of some of those mikvah are still there, just below the Temple Mount in Jerusalem as well as the southern steps that would've led into the temple place that Jesus would have taught, a place that Jesus would have walked. And, so, it is known to be the birthplace of the church, a place we visit when we go to Jerusalem each year. So, our time in Acts today was the flashpoint that began what we know as Christianity, right? People were not known as Christians at first. This term would be actually a Gentile term that will be coined in Antioch once the gospel began to spread out but the story that we read from Acts today is the origin story of the church that collected itself around the teachings and ministry and belief in Jesus and it's the same Holy Spirit that leads and guides us. And we’re on the same mission to bring light and good news. So, we have clearly moved out of the Gospels and clearly moved into the book of Acts, but now what we are reading is the story of the early church and its mission. It connects the dots to us because it is the same church and we are on the same mission. So, we may be reading the stories of those who have gone before us in earlier times, but we are now reading our own story and we are to collaborate in this story with the same Holy Spirit.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, we invite You into that. We can often read these stories and their magnificence, and we read them as the exceptions to the rule, we read them as like something that You did that was magical at a time long ago and we would sure love to see that again, we would sure love to see Your power poured out again as if those things have passed away as if You were a different Holy Spirit as if Your power has diminished since then. Forgive us for this. You are the Spirit of truth and You have been sent by our Savior to advocate for us, to comfort us, to lead us into all truth, to lead us deeper into Jesus, to reveal the narrow path that leads to life. So, come Holy Spirit, even as we read of the stories of the origin of the faith we invite You to renew us in our faith today. Come Holy Spirit we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Announcements:
dailyaudiobible.com is the website and, of course, that’s where you find out what’s going on around here.
And we mentioned, we announced yesterday the global campfires coming back together for 2019 at the family reunion 2019. It was a tradition that we began last year and had a blast at the Family Reunion and so we’ve just decided to do it again, but we needed to find a place to have a little more access, a little more people. It sold out last year so quickly. And, so, we went and searched. We found a great camp up on the lake, not too far from the airport, not too far from Nashville, very very convenient, wonderful place to stay, wonderful place to play. It's going to be amazing. And, so, the Family Reunion for 2019 will take place August 31st through September 2nd 2019, which is Labor Day weekend here in the rolling hills of Tennessee. If you're staying on site the cost will depend on, you know, what kind of accommodations that you want. So, check them all out. We recommend everybody comes. Stay together, play together be together, eat together, get to know each other, like deepen the relationships with people that you may have been praying for and only know by voice for years. Make those connections and your brothers and sisters who are going through the Scriptures with you, have them in your life. This is this is what community and family is all about. So yeah, we recommend you come and hang out and stay and check all that. If you’re staying off site, the cost is $55 per person. It includes two evening meals, plus our time together in the evening as well as use of the grounds, which are spectacular. If you’re staying on site, there are a number of options. You just gotta check it out. It’s gonna be a blast. You can find out about the Daily Audio Bible Family Reunion 2019 at dailyaudiobible.com in the Initiatives section. Community Prayer and Praise:
Hi DABbers, my name is Anna and I listen on a regular basis and this morning I was listening, and I heard Norman call into the prayer line and he was calling to encourage Christine who had been separated from her husband and Norman gave the testimony of how his own wife had prayed for the restoration of their marriage. And Norman and Christine I was so moved by both of you and both of your situations because my birthday, my 40th birthday, is in six days and I have not been married yet, but I have been praying for my husband since I was even a little girl. I remember being five years old and one day to be married and imagining my husband and talking to God about what it would be like to be a wife and a mother. And I know that it’s how has designed me, and I’ve kept myself pure and I’ve prayed and I’ve journaled to my husband and written him letters and I know that God is faithful. Even this morning, today’s the 2nd of June, even this this morning we heard the Scripture from Psalms that says I gave my burdens to the Lord, I carried my situation to the Lord and he answered me and I believe that God is gonna answer me but would you all pray with me for my husband that this would be the year that we come together and start building the kingdom of God together. Pray for my husband. Whether he knows the Lord or not, I know that God has given me word that he’s gonna love the Lord. I ask that you would pray for him, that he would come quickly, and that no weapon formed against our marriage would prosper. I have full faith in God’s good answer me. Thank you.
Hello dearest DAB family, this is Lori formally from North Carolina now I’m from all over the place. Recently we sold our house and all our stuff and bought a truck and an Airstream, and we’ve name them Stanley and Living Stream and now my husband John and my cat Rosie and actually our cat Rosie are traveling all over North America. So, we know God is up to something with this whole new adventure, but we just don’t know really much at all. So, we would really appreciate your prayers for our safety and that we would definitely follow the Spirits leading for navigation in the earthly and heavenly realms and that God would give us eyes to see and ears to hear what He would want us to do and accomplish for His kingdom purposes while we’re on this new adventure. And even more importantly than that, I just want to say how important it is for us, especially now that we’re on the road to know that we’re part of such an amazing extensive family and we’re so grateful for this podcast and grateful for the Hardin family. But more importantly than anything we’ve already asked, I want to just ask you to pray for my sister Sheila. She’s been suffering from a degenerative spine issue for much of her life and lately it has been slowly stealing her mobility to the point where it’s getting very scary. And I just pray that you will join me in praying for her divine healing, just as God killed my brain heal ocular tumor back in 1982. And more important than her physical healing I want to pray and ask you to pray with us that she would come to know and love Jesus. That’s my heart cry. So, thank you so much for your fervent and effectual prayers my dear family. And also want to give a shout out to Angel in California…
Hey DAB family, this is blessed like me here. I want to share a message about God’s power. In Psalm 22 I was reading and at the end it said, “and I will praise and worship God’s power.” I was just thinking on how much influence that could do to our faith if we were to praise God’s power, if we were to just really, really understand that once we praise God’s power God can never get smaller to us, He can only get to get to us. God is a powerful God but how often do we praise His power. Praise God’s power so when you’re walking through the Valley or you’re walking through a dark spot in life you can know, you can have a light that will light up and say, “I serve a God that is powerful, I serve a God is able, I serve a God that’s with me and works through me and is a powerful God”. And once that happens, oh my goodness, it’s like dynamite, it’s more than dynamite because we serve a God that is powerful. Blessed like me coming here with a message of power, God’s power. Praise His power, but I’m also thanking every one of you for your prayers, for your love that you do for one another, that is a powerful thing to do as well. Love you guys, love you Brian and Jill for this awesome memory…ministry…I always get that wrong. Thank you, guys. Thank you, Blind Tony for mentioning my name and bringing me up often. I’m listening at times but not always. Love you and thank you for this ministry Brian.
Hi Daily Audio Bible family, this is Jordan from Georgia. I haven’t called in a while. I called in about some health issues and my horse dying. I wanted to give an update. My health issues are still very prevalent. I think that’s the right word __ but I just felt like I needed to call in today. I’ve felt like this for a while and I don’t know why but I feel like there’s somebody out there who needs intense prayer, very intense prayer. I’ve been trying to think of the words to say but I just can’t think of it. But if you’re listening, God will put this on your heart and He will let you know that this is for you. I pray that you will stay strong in what you’re going through, that you will know that no matter who you think is not there, God is there for you, and no matter how hard people may try to tear you down, there is no tearing down a stronghold that is made with God. If you guys could keep me in your prayers that would be amazing. I just wanted to let you guys know how, despite the amount of tension I have in my day-to-day life, I turn this on every night and I feel an intense amount of joy for the last seven minutes whenever everybody’s praying. I feel like I’m constantly being prayed over even though none of it is for me necessarily. And it’s just amazing to see this kind of family come together. So, I pray you all have an amazing and wonderful day.
