ooh um it's not really a headcanon but more a deep dive into martin's relationship with his mum.

i think it's very emotionally based abuse plus a hefty dose of generational trauma, which especially works with my desi martin headcanon. basically, for a lot of immigrants and children of immigrants, there's a huge fucking pressure to give back. they brought you to this better life, they raised you amidst the struggles of being an immigrant, not being able to speak english fluently, racism, economic issues etc and it's very inherent within desi culture itself to give back to your parents and take care of them when they're older. i'm not saying this is always a bad thing, i just think it can easily become exploitative. especially with his mum's illness, the guilt is always gonna be there. i think she gave him hell for dropping out of school but also gave him hell for not spending enough time with her, and i think her hell was in a very short, sharp words, displeased faces and oppressive silence kinda way. i think martin has learned the way to make himself small, take up as little space as possible and then use that to his advantage. he assesses the room for the best thing to say or do for everyone, guessing and doing what he thinks is the best course of action without actually consulting other people. we see this with his whole peter lukas plan. he's manipulative in a desperate way. in a way where he knows he has no control but attempts to control things anyway.
