I love Yan Lin so much. One of the many brilliant choices Kunning Palace made, one of them is making the main characters have no combat experience. Absolute zero. We have not one, but two intelligent, highly competent minsiter/love interests who become fucking useless when facing a sword.
And then there's Yan Lin. This naive, ray of sunshine boy wrapped in purple silk, who just happens to be a weapon of mass destruction as well. We have all these people scheming to protect him from the evilness of the world, making us think of him as a cutie baby that must be protected. Then he gleefully proceeds to fight back entire splatoons.
The contrast.

The Yan Family Reunion (From SOKP Episode 33)
So, I am taking time to rewatch Episodes 33-38+Special of Story of Kunning Palace and I gotta say, the first reunion between Xie Wei and his Yan family is so important and emotional. The flashbacks of Xie Wei as he recites the vow he had given 20 years ago are incredible.
Tumblr media
The whole vow that Xie Wei did as not quite 7 year old: "My Mother has passed away. My Father is unworthy. I hate that I have the last name that he's disgraced. I don't want such a last name. Thank God for your mercy. In a crisis, one sees one's true nature."
Tumblr media
"I, Ju'an, dare not forget it. I'm willing to give up my old last name. Abandon my old name, and my old identity. No matter how hard it is, I won't change my mind."
Tumblr media
The fact that Xie Wei came up with this when he was that young, after being traumatized by the massacre he'd seen by the rebel king, his father and aunt basically giving him up as a sacrificial lamb, and to only be saved by his said rebel king.
Just.... damn.
Then Xie Wei goes on to say: "I am no longer Xue Dingfei, much less a viscount of the Xue family. All I have is the Yan family's blood. And my name is Xie Wei. Not only do I live for myself, but also for the 300 loyal souls.
I vow to never let it go and seek justice for them."
Tumblr media
The vow is raw, intense, and beautiful. It's like Xie Wei is unraveling all of his defense walls kept around his soul to bear his heart to his uncle and cousin. The only two relatives that he trusts. He lets them see just what has been hidden inside of him all these years. And understandably, both his uncle and cousin are moved to almost tears.
And then his uncle responds with something equally emotional: "Okay. It doesn't matter what your name is. You'll always be the child of the Yan family."
Tumblr media
This whole scene made me cry. It was beautiful, raw and open. And his uncle accepting Xie Wei was epic. He didn't have to say much to get the point across to Xie Wei that he was loved. That he was cherished. That he was a Yan. And the Yans protect their own. Marquis Yan, in the limited amount of time that Xie Wei has known him, has not only accepted him, but has taken him under his wing like his own child. Marquis Yan is the father Xie Wei never got to have. And Yan Lin, bless his heart, accepts Xie Wei as his brother without any hesitation, not just a heroic cousin. Yan Lin is the brother Xie Wei never got to have. Such a beautiful scene. I cried so many tears for them. That Xie Wei finally got to have this moment - just ahhhh.

I really want to know what the others, particularly the 3 romantic interests, were thinking in life 1. Their version of the story. Because at first we just kind of had to accept that puppy Yan Lin of life 2, had the anger and hatred in him, not just against the Xue fam, but against Ning'er specifically for SA. Ultimately the only difference we see between life 1 and life 2 at that point is that she rejects him at a really bad time in life 1 (understatement), and that her given reason for rejecting him in life 1 was to become empress, rather than she just wasn't into him.
Speaking of YL and the SA that somehow got past censors, at first I took it as something that happened when XW and YL first conquered the capitol, and that XW may not have known about it or couldn't have stopped it. But from the recent flashback, it's clear that it was ongoing, while the emperor still lived, and that XW and probably everyone else knew about it.
XW was setting himself up to be emperor with YL to support him. So couldn't he have stopped YL? Why didn't he? Was it that he was at risk of losing YL's support if he did and that wasn't worth it? Did he also think he hated JXN back then, and thus that she deserved it?
I kind of don't trust Ning'er's narrative of what happened in life 1, because she is so self-hating. When she tells her 'dream' to second life YL, even he says, 'Ok so you wanted to be empress, but it still sounds like I was the bad guy. Not you.' She was ambitious and did shitty things, but we also know she did good things, like save Fangyin and get the emperor to try and summon YL back once he took power.
So what did happen in life 1 that she doesn't know about? How did XW and YL become so far gone in terms of how they treated her? Did ZZ actually hate her in the end, or did he want her to leave because he was heartbroken? What would the 3 think after she died?
I love second life stories because they do a good job showing the best and worst versions of people, but it's also frustrating because you only get the one perspective.

Jiang Xuening choosing her husband in Story of kunning palace.
1. Yan Lin, a handsome, capable, talented, loving, caring, pleasant natured, rich, viscount (soon to be general) with good personality, character and reputation, who dotes on her.
Xuening - I can't be with him cause in the past life, I betrayed him. And he is just a friend.
2. Zhang Zhe, an honest, straight forward, loyal, serious, quiet, good looking, poor government official with good personality, character and reputation, who has feelings for her.
Xuening - I can't be with him cause in the past life, I betrayed him.
3. Xie Wei, a manipulative, shrewd, calculative, suspicious, sharp, indifferent, scary looking government official, with traumatic past and psychological problems, who is using, controlling and murdering people here and there, obsessed over Xuening even before he loves her.
Xuening - He was more or less the reason I committed suicide in my past life. He also threatens to kill me and chokes me every other day, and I was scared of him for most of the time in the life. But I mean, I didn't betray him in the past life, right? So, yes it's him.
