Fernando Botero’s deep knowledge of art history, particularly of the Western canon, has been critical to the development of his artistic career. In his early twenties, the artist traveled to Europe, where he intensively studied the work of Italian Renaissance masters Uccello and Masaccio, as well as the Spanish masters Velázquez and Goya.
