The First Kiss
Summary: Aemond Introduces you to Vhagar
“I’m not sure.” You said tensed up , you both were walking near the sand dunes of kings landing around a mile or two up from the red keep. Aemond was leading you to only one place. To meet Vhagar. As a child you had only seen her from afar, she was spectacularly large but you had not gotten anywhere close as Aemond was intending to now.
Aemond held your hands carefully as he noticed the concern on your face “I would not let anything happen to my intended …”
He spoke so softly with you, the change in him the last few years had clearly thrown you off. As children he was always so grumpy , stand off ish and sometimes rude…but now…he was so different . You had been here one week and your wedding was still seven days away, yet Alicent commented on your presence and how Aemond seemed more at ease.
“You trust me ?” Aemond asked as his thumb stroked your hand
“I do…but I would also like to walk into the Sept in a weeks time with no dragon fire on my heel “ you joked
He smiled still holding your hand leading you around and over a hill , once you got to the top you saw her. She was on the edge of the beach, sleeping against a large cliff - sheltered from the sea air and the sun.
He stood behind you, his hands lightly on your waist , leaning forward he whispered in your ear “Do not be afraid…I’m here with you.”
His close proximity gave you shivers, Alicent insisted that guards chaperone you as you were both not yet married, but Aemond insisted that the guards would put Vhagar on edge…”And mother you would need to hire two new guards.”
She did not care for his joke, but Aemond stated it was a fact. He reiterated that the guards would not see the red keep again if they followed you to the shores of kings landing.
As you both approached her your pace slowed , she was so large you froze as you stood mere feet away. Aemond gently laid his hand to your lower back and guided you towards her . She only shuffled her head slightly which made you hesitate. Aemond walked to her , you watched him slowly stroke her side, she did not flinch. You were transfixed by Aemonds interaction as he laid his forehead against her and spoke gently “Lykirī”
He turned and looked at you holding his hand out “Give me your hand …”
It was like a command and you could not obey. Almost like a reflex your hand went to his , he pulled you to his side, raising your hand and placing it on Vhagars side. The skin made your fingers feel like you were rubbing your hands against a wall of distorted pebbles, she raised her head and looked at you- you met her eyes and couldn’t look away.
“Do not look away” Aemond whispered “Speak to her”
You inhaled slowly , keeping you hand on her scaly side you kept focused on her
“Dohaerās …Vhagar…” you said
She blinked once , her old eyes shifting briefly at Aemond who nodded once at her. She rested her head back down and resumed her sleeping, at which point you exhaled deeply - turning to see Aemond who was smiling with pride.
*
As you both returned to the walled gardens you released your grip on Aemonds hand, You caught your breath and rested your back against the willow tree, Aemond looked so proud as he stood close by facing you “You did so well…”
You smiled “I’m just relieved she did not devour me nor burn me.”
“You stared a dragon down…did not flinch or scream…”
He looked at you in a way you had never experienced in your life, he came over to you and towered over you. You just looked up at him, your hands tightly clasped behind you back. His eye scanning your face as his finger traced along your jaw, your chest was heaving at this contact - so close to you , you had dreamt of this moment since your father told you of your betrothal.
He gently put his other hand against the bark of the tree and leaned in, tilting your chin up and his lips reached yours, kissing you so softly you let out the most angelic moan. He broke away after what seemed to be the longest moment. You both smiled in unison - you shyly smiled as he rested his forehead against yours “What is it?” He whispered
“That…” you paused “That was my first kiss….” You whispered back
His smile grew slightly “You mean no northern boy tried to steal a kiss from you?”
You shook your head “I have been betrothed to you since I was a child…I wanted to wait for you to be the first…” the way you blinked your eyes at him he knew what you meant in that look, he could read between the lines- He kissed you again ,you let your hands free themselves from your back and placed them on his toned chest. You could stay like this forever, in pure bliss enjoying your first soft intimate moments with the man you would marry in seven days.
As the wind picked up his hand crawled round your waist and he brought you closer to him, kissing you fiercely but full of adoration , wrapping another arm around your shoulder. When your lips broke away from one another you smiled as he lightly rubbed his nose against yours . You closed your eyes as you rested your head against the crook of his neck, he sighed as he held you, in pure tranquility.

Criston Cole isn't really been afforded a lot of nuance by the fandom and it's starting to annoy me.
I think a few more small scenes would've done so much, say hearing the ladies of the court gossiping over an illegitimate child or even he himself discussing his background with either Alicent or Rhaenyra, which would've added to his development and his eventual crisis of faith, his Catholic guilt. I think people forget Criston is one of the few main characters who isn't a noble or a direct part of the family. As an illegitimate child in Westeros, all his life he's been told that he is the sinful thing, that he was born of sin and therefore unclean as result. By taking the white cloak and becoming a King's guard, he was able to put that "sin" behind him and become "clean". By sleeping with Rhaenyra he's stained and tainted that, something he can't handle or stand at all. He committed the ultimate sin, he's broken his oath, stained his honor and may have created a child doomed to be unclean too (obviously no such child was conceived or born but there was always the chance one could've been and I think that ate Criston alive inside and will probably be a factor of why he behaves the way he does towards Rhaenyra's sons). It's why he's so eager to run off and marry Rhaenyra so he can (in his mind) set it right. He wants to see himself as clean again. It's why he confesses so quickly to Alicent (also did some of you not watch the episode? Criston knew Rhaenyra snuck out, he had no way of knowing Rhaenyra was even with Daemon, he wasn't in King's landing to hear the gossip regarding Daemon & Rhaenyra that Larys spoke of and he was summoned immediately by Alicent so of course he assumed the rumours Alicent spoke of was referring to him), to seek forgiveness and regain some of that "cleanliness" before dying. Alicent offers him salvation, sanctuary, forgiveness while Rhaenyra shattered the version of herself he had built up in his mind. She betrayed that ideal he had of her and cannot understand why the "sin" they committed haunts him so greatly. For her it was a pleasurable night they spent together, to him it is his damnation, his ultimate sin. It's why he follows Alicent, in his eyes she offers him salvation while Rhaenyra can only offer him ruination.
I could ramble so much more about this, I don't know what it is but Alicent and Criston and the religious themes surrounding them both is absolutely fascinating.
