The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

June 28th 1914

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, make an official visit to the Bosnian Capital of Sarajevo. Following the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908, this visit was agreed upon by Ferdinand to attend military exercises in the capital. During the visit, Ferdinand and his wife were making their way to the capital's town hall when a Serbian nationalist threw a bomb into their open car. Remarkably, the bomb bounced off the vehicle and exploded under the next car in the motorcade. Several people were injured including members of the imperial entourage. Although Franz Ferdinand and his wife were unharmed, they changed plans after the explosion and headed for the hospital where their entourage was being taken. Along the way, the driver made a wrong turn and was forced to stop the vehicle. As fate would have it, the vehicle stopped directly in front of another member of the same nationalist plot to assassinate the archduke. Without hesitation, 19-year-old Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip pulled a gun and shot both Franz and his wife at close range. The shots proved to be fatal as Franz was hit in his neck and his wife in the stomach. They both soon died of their injuries. As a result of this horrendous act, Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum to Serbia. The ultimatum detailed several changes in the relationship between the countries moving forward and demanded control over the proceedings related to the archduke’s assassination. Serbia accepted many of the demands but feared the consequences of giving judicial autonomy to Austria-Hungary in cases related to the assassination. Their final offer to Austria-Hungary denied any request for involvement related to the punishment of the conspirators. On July 28th, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This is regarded by many as the primary catalyst for World War I.

Reading through these first-hand accounts We're quite Powerful With the memories Of what the young generation went through Back in 1914 to 1918.

When reading I have tried to pick out the accounts that that means something to me whilst also being linked to my group's Character design.

There was One story I read About the boys in the trenches creating bombs from empty jam jars and old bits of metal which I felt could be a good way to reference the time she spent in the trenches whilst also Being a good artefact to show what she has been through.

In 1914, Europe was on the brink of World War I. The major powers included the German Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Empire, and the Monarchy of Russia. Tensions were high due to complex alliances, nationalism, and militarization. The Triple Entente (France, Russia, and the United Kingdom) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy initially) were key alliances, but political dynamics were shifting. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo triggered a chain reaction, leading to the outbreak of World War I in August 1914.
