Oh Baby, You Part 50 - Cherry
prev « masterlist » next
Tumblr media
Idly, you watch the digital, red numbers above the elevator go up one by one. You’ve sometimes wondered if Mingyu hates the chairman’s office, considering its spot on the very top floor, and his genuine fear of heights. Then again, the building is an entirely closed space— he’s more of a bungee jumping scaredy cat than an Empire State Building one.
You look down at the container of cookies you brought. They’re not his favourite, since you didn’t have all the ingredients for that, but you hope they’ll do. Before Mingyu’s complete integration into chairmanship, you used to bake together all the time. You know he’s better than you, (always has been,) but ever since that time you ended up in a baking summer camp together all those years ago, he’s insisted your cookies are the best.
Of course you know he’s being nice, but that’s just another great thing about Mingyu.
You’re wearing a mask over the lower half of your face, and Jeonghan said there’d be no one around to see you. Still, you walk through the halls with your head lowered and only lift it when you come upon Jeonghan’s desk.
He eyes the container. “You sure about this? I’m not even supposed to be going in there right now.”
“Don’t worry,” you say with a smile he can only see in your eyes. “If he’s truly upset, I’ll just leave him the cookies and go. But I promise I’ll try some other time to get you the vacation days you deserve, okay?”
“It’s really not that important…”
Playfully rolling your eyes, you head towards Mingyu’s office. “Whatever you say, Jeonghan.”
You pull on the thick metal handle of the door without knocking, and as soon as you walk in, Mingyu speaks without moving his eyes from his computer screen. “Not right now, Jeonghan. Just tell whoever needs me to—”
“Hey, stranger.”
His face immediately lights up upon seeing you, and you pull down your mask with a smile. Yeah. There’s your best friend.
“Sunshine!” Mingyu pushes himself to standing and quickly rounds his desk to pull you into a hug. “What are you doing here?” He retracts a bit to look at your face in obvious confusion. “I thought you and Jeonghan agreed we shouldn’t meet up here because of… you know.”
You step back and hold out the plastic container of cookies between you. “About Jeonghan…”
Sighing, Mingyu lets you put them in his hands. “Please tell me this isn’t about the whole ‘vacation’ thing… You know I can’t, Sunshine.”
“Why not?”
“It’s just not how things are done.”
“‘How things are done’? Mingyu, you’re the chairman. If there’s anyone who can change the way things are done, it’s you. Especially for someone who’s spent a good third of your life doing his best to help you.”
He sets the cookies down behind him and takes one of your hands, letting your joined fingers dangle between you as he leans back onto the edge of his desk. “Look, I’d love to give Jeonghan some time off. I really would, but we’re in the middle of a lot right now—”
“You’re always in the middle of something here.”
“—and,” he continues, countering your little dig with a wry smile, “I as much as I wish I could give everyone here time off, I’d need time to find a suitable person to fill Jeonghan’s position while he’s gone. That’s where the four months come in.”
You tilt your head, trying to summon those eyes that Mingyu would say he can never refuse. The problem is, you’ve never really been in control of whatever expression it is that he sees. “Surely you could find someone in less time than that.”
He chuckles. “I don’t know if you understand how good Jeonghan is at his job.”
“I have a pretty good idea,” you say with a roll of your eyes.
Mingyu glances at the door, and you turn to it as well, but nothing happens. “Speaking of,” he says quietly, returning your attention to him. “Where is Orion? With Soonyoung?”
“Actually, he’s at a daycare for a—”
“A daycare? Jeonghan didn’t tell me he arranged anything.”
You blink. “Well that would be because he didn’t. I set it—”
“What? Why?”
Pausing for a moment, you make yourself remember that this is exactly the thing you, Mingyu, and Jeonghan are always worried about. Oftentimes, you the most. Having some stranger spend just enough time with Orion to see his resemblance to Mingyu.
“Orion will be preschool age within this next year, so I thought maybe I’d transition to some in-person classes while he attends. The daycare would be for emergencies, or things like weekend exams, or…”
Or when you don’t want to burden your only friends for the rest of Orion’s younger years.
Mingyu rounds his desk again and bends over in front of his computer. “What’s the name of this place?”
“Dream Daycare. It’s near—”
“You know that was careless, right? You should’ve asked Jeonghan or I to—”
“I looked into it. I went over like six places before—”
“Jeonghan would’ve—”
“He has enough on his plate—”
“—taken care of—”
“Mingyu!” Your raised voice manages to shut him up, but he only meets your eyes for a second before he goes back to his computer screen, investigating the daycare’s website. “I did the research. They had no idea who I was — not that anyone really does, since Jeonghan’s done such a good job keeping me anonymous thus far — and seeing as the place is mostly run by some sweet old ladies, they probably have no idea who you are, either.”
He sighs out through his nose. “Are they good?”
“What?”
“Good caretakers,” he clarifies, and you see the genuine worry in his eyes now.
Of course. You should’ve known that the revelation Orion’s true identity wasn’t Mingyu’s primary concern; his safety is.
Exhaling, you try to give Mingyu a reassuring smile. “Yes, Mingyu. They’re excellent. I only chose the place I thought was the best, safest, and kindest for him. He’s my son, after all.”
It’s small.
It’s so small, so short that you almost don’t see it, hear it. Almost miss it entirely.
But you’re certain that Mingyu… scoffs before he says, “Is he?”
For more than a few seconds, you’re frozen. Just slightly, your mouth parts, but you can’t seem to find the right words. Did you even hear him right?
“What… What is that supposed to mean?”
He shakes his head, still scrolling. “Nothing.”
“No,” you rebut. “No, tell me what you meant by that.”
“It’s really nothing.” Straightening himself up, Mingyu fixes you with an uneasy look. You just stand there, cross your arms, and wait for him to cave. It only takes a few seconds. “It’s just, with you telling everyone…”
You let out an affronted sound. “I did not tell everyone. And for that matter, it wasn’t exactly my choice to tell anyone anything at all.”
“Look, forget it. Just pretend I never—”
“But what does any of that have to do with Orion being my son?”
Mingyu takes in a deep breath, his hand coming up to his tie like he wants to wrench it loose, but he only fidgets with it. He looks away, then meets your eyes again. “With this many people knowing he’s not your son—”
“But he is! He is my son, Mingyu. And I am good at taking care of my son.”
It’s too hot in this room. Mingyu’s shoulders rise and fall with another sigh, and for some reason, you can’t stand the look in his eyes.
“I need a breather.” By the time the words come out, you’re already turning and walking towards the door of his office. “Don’t follow me,” you tell him, only because you know your best friend would.
Jeonghan stands up when you shove the door open and storm past his desk, a mix of concern and shock on his face. You must look as upset as you feel.
“I just need a second,” you say, and so he just watches you as you walk off, his mouth opening and closing, but no words coming out.
You have no clue where you’re going, but you think you had the right idea when you made that excuse to leave Mingyu’s office, so you look around for some sort of outdoor exit. A balcony, or something similar. Eventually, you find a staircase, which leads to what looks like a small terrace of sorts.
Only, when you pull the door open and breath in the cool, fresh air, you turn to the right and see someone leaning against the railing. His distant silhouette isn’t the most familiar, and he’s facing away from you, but considering this place, and the only people you know in it…
“Mr Choi?”
He turns, a white stick poking from his lips.
“I’m sorry,” you say, apologizing for interrupting what must be his precious alone time. Still, you really don’t want to go back inside yet. “I…” Your feet pull you a couple hesitant steps toward him. “...didn’t know you smoked.”
While his eyes focus in recognition, Seungcheol’s hand rises to pull the stick from his mouth. The motion reveals the head of a bright red, spherical lollipop.
“Oh. That’s…” You want to say out of character, but you trail off. If you think about it, there isn’t much you know about Choi Seungcheol. “Sorry for assuming. I just wasn’t expecting…”
He says nothing for a little bit, just looking at you as you approach. His eyes seem to study you, and you resist the urge to squirm. When you settle next to him, resting your arms on the railing like he is and keeping your gaze on the cityscape, he finally looks away from you and peers at the lollipop instead.
“...I bought them for him,” he says.
You turn your head, squinting in the bright sunlight. “Who?”
“Your son.”
It’s a weird confession, to be sure, but he can’t know the way those two words affect you in that moment. That’s right. Orion is your son.
“But,” Seungcheol continues, unaware of the reason you needed the fresh air in the first place. He lets out a deprecating huff of a laugh, his head dropping for a second before he faces you again. The lollipop gets brought back up, and he taps it twice against his smiling teeth. “I might’ve gotten myself addicted.”
You can’t help it. You laugh.
Turning again to the skyline, your fold your arms on the railing and drop your chin to rest on them with a sigh. What a beautiful day.
Tap, tap.
You look at your elbow, where Seungcheol pokes a wrapped lollipop. Cherry. Your gaze rises to meet his.
“Something’s wrong,” he says simply, holding the candy out closer to you, silent but insistent.
Maybe he isn’t so unaware after all.
Wordlessly, you take the lollipop with a shy nod and a smile.
You don’t know why, but as soon as you close your mouth around the sweet, artificial cherry flavoured candy, the tears start to form. You hate that it’s now, with one of the very dangerous people to be vulnerable in front of, but you can’t seem to stop the blazing heat in the corners of your eyes. You don’t sob — don’t let yourself — but the tears fall despite your resolve.
It’s irrational, you understand, to be this upset. But it’s hard to believe yourself to be a good parent when you start doubting whether you’re a parent at all.
“Would you…” Seungcheol’s wary voice returns your attention to him. “...like to leave?”
You let out a laugh, embarrassed. He must be uncomfortable. “I probably should.”
As you push yourself off the railing, though, Seungcheol does the same. “Alright,” he says, then takes your hand, and you realize as he leads you back inside and through the building all the way to the ground floor: he’s not wary of you, but for you. “Let’s go, then. Somewhere nicer.”
For some unknown reason, you just swallow down all your trepidation, gently take your hand back, say, “Okay.”
And follow.

Oh Baby, You Part 38 - Messed Up, Stupid, and Jaded
prev « masterlist » next
Tumblr media
Wonwoo’s chest tightens as you take in a deep breath. Your arms are wrapped around yourself, almost like you’re blocking everyone out. “After that…” You shrug, then pretend you didn’t by rolling your shoulders back. “Word spread pretty fast.” Your voice is strained from trying to hold in tears, but a few managed to escape and run down your cheeks as you explained yourself. “A lot of people from school hated me but… I guess that didn’t matter too much since I dropped out to take care of Orion.
“I stayed offline for a long time. People were calling me some pretty—” You wipe your hand over your cheek. “—horrible things. I couldn’t defend myself because, well… I needed what they thought about me to be true.”
Wonwoo’s fists clench at his sides.
“It was…” You inhale again. Exhale. “…really lonely, for a while. But then—” Turning, you face the friends you must have come to the concert with. Wonwoo had practically forgotten about them. “—I met some really amazing people. People who had no idea who I was, or what I… did.” You send a watery, wan smile their way. “Who liked me again.”
There’s a quiet moment where your friends all smile back at you, but then your eyes land on Chan, and the tension in your shoulders returns. Your lips curl inwards, and you shift on your feet, then go back to facing Wonwoo and Jihoon.
“But it wasn’t all bad,” you say. “Orion may have been a surprise… but he’s the light of my life now. There are things about what happened that I regret, yes.” You meet Wonwoo’s eyes. “But not him.”
After that, it seems like you’re done; you look down at your shoes, and there’s an awkward silence. Wonwoo feels the ache of tears behind his eyes, recalling every shitty feeling that he went through three years ago. It’s silent until Jihoon breaks it with a hoarse whisper.
“Fuck.” He runs a hand through his hair. “I didn’t— I…”
Something breaks, then. Wonwoo whips around on Jihoon and braces his forearm across his chest, bunching Jihoon’s collar in his fist. “You did this. You—”
Jihoon’s mouth opens, but Wonwoo sees the flash of resistance die in his eyes as fast as it flared up. He winces preemptively, anticipating a punch to the face. “I’m… I’m sorry, I…”
“You told me all that bullshit about protecting myself!” Wonwoo’s voice rises, apathetic of his volume now that everyone else has left the venue.
Your eyes widen, and you take a hesitant step forward. “Wonwoo.”
His grip on Jihoon’s shirt tightens. “You said I had to! You told me to cut them out of my life—”
“Wonwoo!” You shove yourself between them, forcing Wonwoo off Jihoon and pushing your hand on his chest to get him to back off.
He feels a burning where you touched him.
You glance between the two of them, something hardened in your expression now. “Stop,” you say. “Yes, Jihoon went about everything in his—” You share a look with Jihoon, and Wonwoo sees a brief moment of understanding pass between you. “—messed up, stupid, jaded way, but…”
Wonwoo’s breath hitches when you meet his eyes.
“...you listened, Wonwoo.”
The hurt in your voice is unmistakable.
He thought, three years ago and until now, that he was the only one in pain. He was the one who got thrown to the side.
Your hands move around yourself again. “You didn’t trust me enough to even let me talk to you. And that… I think that’s what hurt me the most.”
Wonwoo’s ears are ringing. He did this to you. He wants to say something. Anything. But is there any word of apology worth enough to repent for what he’s done?
You don’t let him toil for long. Turning away, you return to your friends. “Can we go home, please?”
One of them glances at Wonwoo before going, “Oh, uh. Yeah, of course. The taxi meter’s been going this whole time anyway.” He puts his arm over your shoulders while a girl wraps herself around your waist and pats your back.
Then you’re gone. Again. It’s his fault that you’re gone.
And for the first time, Wonwoo realizes it was his fault three years ago, too.

You were woken up by sunshine streaming through your blinds. Last night tired you out to the point where it took you several minutes to remember that your room didn’t even have blinds. You owned blackout curtains because you were so sensitive to changes in brightness.
With sunshine playing on your eyelids and a pounding headache, you didn’t even bother to open your eyes to start looking for your phone in order to check the time. Instead you stretched out your hand only for it to touch something soft. Did you meet up with Seokmin last night? You couldn’t remember how you’d gotten home, let alone most of the night, so you assumed you had. Seokmin usually came by to pick you up if he realized you were too drunk to handle yourself, a point you usually passed while still in Seungcheol’s apartment.
You found yourself playing with Seokmin’s hair while waiting for him to wake up. Usually he was up before you, especially since you assumed he hadn’t drunk as much as you last night. It was only after you heard a man sigh next to you that you realized it wasn’t Seokmin’s hair you were playing with. You couldn’t help but stifle a small scream as you pulled your hand away.
You were definitely awake now.
When you opened your eyes, you found Wonwoo half-asleep next to you in bed. You hoped he hadn’t been cold, since you apparently were hogging his entire duvet.
You quickly realized that Wonwoo couldn’t have gotten noticeably cold, since he was still sleeping in all of his clothes. A fact that you realized also applied to you. Thank god nothing happened between us, went through your head. But didn’t you also feel a bit disappointed? You couldn’t quite grasp the range of emotions that were going through you at the moment, so you settled for staring at Wonwoo, who still hadn’t awoken despite your small scream of surprise earlier.
You weren’t sure if you were the one who had made a mess of his hair, or if it usually looked this way in the morning. Either way, Wonwoo was still annoyingly handsome, even with a half-open mouth with a side of drool.
You were about to go back to looking for your phone in order to get a scope of the situation, when you felt Wonwoo stir next to you. “Hi, Wonwoo.” You saw panic written on his face. You guessed he was as prepared to find someone next to him in his bed as you were.
Wonwoo dried off his drool with his hand, shock displayed on his face when he realized, but you just chuckled. “Had a good sleep?” He was annoyingly adorable.
“Seems so,” he replied after some more time. He still seemed like he wasn’t quite awake which he confirmed by asking you, “is this a dream?”
A dream or a nightmare?, you wondered to yourself. Waking up next to Wonwoo was definitely a dream come true for you, but what if it was the opposite for him? You didn’t dare voice your question in case he confirmed your fears.
“Definitely real.” You didn’t know what came over you, but you leaned over to pinch his cheek. “See? As real as Spider-Man.”
The thought had been to cheer him up a bit, and maybe earn a chuckle, but Wonwoo groaned: “It’s too early for this, Yn,” instead. He covered his face with his pillow. In a way that confirmed your suspicions that this was a nightmare for Wonwoo. Or maybe he just wasn’t a morning person? Or maybe he had a headache even worse than yours?
You can’t keep making excuses for him like this, you tried to tell yourself, but it was automatic at this point. Even after a month of not talking, you still weren’t over him. That was as clear as day.
“What time is it?” you asked after some time, hoping Wonwoo would be in a better mood after having hidden beneath his pillow-slash-sanctuary for a good two seconds. You were about to close your own eyes to drift back to sleep when he replied: “about 11am,” after checking the time on his wristwatch. How adult of him. And you still couldn’t find your phone.
“How many hours of sleep do you think we got?” you asked.
Wonwoo pondered over the question a while before shrugging his shoulders. “Don’t remember much,” he finally admitted. Maybe that was a good sign.
You were staring up at his ceiling, avoiding his gaze. You felt him sneaking glances at you, but you were too embarrassed to attempt to return them. Your cheeks heated up when you realized he no longer tried to hide that he was staring at you. Do I look that bad?
You tried to shrug it off. “I guess we’re in the same boat then,” you said. “I remember we moved on to a nightclub after leaving Minghao at the first bar, and that Seuncheol treated everyone to another couple of shots. It’s dark after that.”
“We moved on to another bar?” Wonwoo croaked. You’d never have guessed that you weren’t the first one to black out.
“First time partying with Seungcheol?” you asked even though you already knew the answer. Wonwoo groaned in response. “Help me find my phone and I’ll see if I can dig up som clues from last night. I usually give Seokmin a full report.” You winced as you realized you mentioned Seokmin around Wonwoo, but he didn’t even react.
You attempted to look for your phone. But your headache in combination with the unfamiliar room overwhelmed you. Not to mention that it had to be Wonwoo’s room. You could see small artifacts that represented him scattered around. His glasses were lying on his nightstand, on his desk there was a desktop computer. And above his desk, he had mounted a bookshelf in which you were trying to decipher the authors on the back of his spines in lieu of looking for your phone, which you had forgotten in the moment. You managed to make out a few repeating authors. Murakami. Han Kang. Kazuo Ishiguro. Donna Tartt. You had to admit that his taste matched yours, despite the fact that you considered owning more than five Murakami books a red flag. Wonwoo owned four.
“Here you go.” Wonwoo handed you your phone with an embarrassed smile. Had he caught you looking at his books? Or did he just realize that you had given up the battle of looking for your phone?
You quickly replied “thanks” as you took your phone from him, slightly brushing your hand against his. You swore there was a spark when you touched and a warmth spread throughout your whole body. Even though your hands only brushed each other’s for a moment, you could feel the phantom touch of his fingers linger long after.
The spicy details from last night would definitely have been sent for Seokmin’s eyes only, if you were lucky, so you decided to delay opening that chat for a while longer. At least until you had a better scope of the situation. Since you told Seokmin everything while drunk, you knew for certain that it contained details that you’d rather not want to see the light of day.
You started by opening the group chat from last night, wittily named work (+ yn). The first thing you were greeted with was some photos that you had snapped of Wonwoo last night. He looked extremely good.
If Wonwoo was telling you the truth it meant that he had been blackout drunk at this point. Despite the fact, it was barely noticeable on him. Judging by the replies of your fellow drunkards, they also hadn’t realized Wonwoo was drunk, and in fact, had assumed that you were drunker than him when it was the other way around..
“Seems like everyone thought you had sobered up by the time we left,” you told Wonwoo. “You should definitely take up drunk-modeling though. It suits you.” At this Wonwoo made a few incoherent noises before asking you who you had sent those pictures to. After explaining to him that you sent them in the group chat, you saw him fish out his own phone from somewhere and start scrolling.
At least having confirmed that Wonwoo was as much of a goner as you, you finally gathered enough courage to open up your private chat with Seokmin. A big block of text was staring back at you, littered with incoherent writing that you figured it was too early in the morning to decipher. You scrolled up some more, only up to the point where you no longer remembered what had happened and started reading your (awful) recap to Seokmin.
You almost dropped your phone when you read far enough to see Seokmin text KISSED? in all caps in response to last night's big revelation. You figured Seokmin knew as well as you that that was code for more than just a light peck, despite you stating exactly that further down.
And then the panic set in. A kiss was fine in itself, and making out in a dark club was nothing new to you. However, you made out with Wonwoo? You could feel your heart catch in your throat and your palms starting to sweat. You nervously looked over at Wonwoo, trying to decipher if he also knew. Do guys send each other stuff like that? You concluded that they probably don’t.
But that didn’t stop you from deciding to sneak a glance at his phone.Just in case, you told yourself. There was no harm in it. The odds of him saying something private was low, you decided, since he barely communicated his feelings with you. While you made sure he knew what you felt at all times. So of course you would update Seokmin, and he wouldn’t update… Mingyu?
Mingyu was the worst case scenario. He already hated you at the moment for reestablishing contact with Wonwoo, for reasons you couldn’t comprehend. You still hadn’t talked to him after your last message in spite of you trying to end it on a positive note. He hadn’t contacted you either.
When you looked over to his side of the bed, you found him sprawled out with his phone in one hand. It was positioned at such an angle that you literally couldn’t miss the contents of the chat even if you hadn’t attempted to catch a glance. Wonwoo’s phone was opened on his private chat with Mingyu. Your breath caught in your throat when you saw one of Mingyu’s replies.
You kissed her?!
At least you and Wonwoo were on the same page now. Because you struggled to think clearly, you just plopped out with the first thing that popped into your mind that wasn’t I’m in love with you. “I guess the cat’s out of the bag.” You added a chuckle to illustrate that you were nervous. Although, you had no idea how Wonwoo was reacting to this. At what point did his dream turn into a nightmare? Was it about now?
“Yeah,” was all Wonwoo said in response. You couldn’t tell if that was a good sign or not.
“I couldn’t help but catch a glance. Sorry,” you hastily added. “I also texted Seokmin the same thing.” All your mind was saying was say something please and please don’t hate me.
“No, it’s fine.” You were aware that Wonwoo was normally quiet. But was he this quiet? Your mind was trying to think a million thoughts at the same time. Your brain was battling against itself. Some part of it was still holding out hope that he returned your feelings while the other part was trying to prepare you for the worst case scenario.
Because you couldn’t decide on the best course of action, all your brain came up with was “it was just a drunken mishap. We can put it behind us!”
You saw that Wonwoo was mulling over what to say, but it frustrated you that he didn’t reply straight away. Why did you always have to be the one who said all your stupid thoughts out loud without thinking, while he had the ability to sit back and actually think out a reply before answering you. He was almost as frustrating as he was handsome.
A moment later, when Wonwoo still hadn’t replied, you felt your breath catch in your throat. You thought you had taken the best course of action (okay, maybe you hadn’t completely decided), but you figured it was safe anyways. His quietness made you question if you had said something wrong, but you couldn’t figure out what that would’ve been.
Wonwoo opened his mind to speak, and yet again you were prepared to hear the words “yeah” as he had uttered in response earlier. Instead all he said was, “do you want a cup of coffee?”
☆ ☆ ☆
You were pretty sure what you borrowed was both Mingyu's hair brush and toothpaste, but you were also sure he wouldn't mind. And if it wasn't his, someone would be finding a couple of stray hairs that weren't theirs (if they were observant enough) and hopefully assume it was one of Mingyu's one night stands.
Either way, it was on the back of your mind as you re-entered the kitchen to find Wonwoo handing you a hot cup of coffee made exactly the way you like it. The act of someone finding one of your hairs on their hairbrush, even if it was the mysterious Jihoon whom you still haven't met, was nothing compared to yesterday's kiss that was still on your mind despite you not remembering it.
You took the cup of coffee from Wonwoo, which he had placed on the counter, perhaps in an attempt to not repeat the awkward moment your hands touched earlier in the morning. You brought it up to your lips, ready to take a sip before Wonwoo stopped you with a "careful, it's hot". You weren't sure if it was the coffee or his comment that seemed to warm your entire body.
The quietness in the room seemed to envelop you both. It was seeping from the walls, pulling a big blanket over the two of you while Wonwoo was brewing his own cup of coffee. You stood there watching his rhythmic and trained movements.
After Wonwoo had finished brewing his own cup, and you had finished half of yours, he finally broke the silence by calling your name.
"Yn."
He eyes locked with yours, and you couldn't help but avert your own. Whatever you were feeling at the moment, shame, love, nervousness, it didn't allow you to look him in the eye for long. Every bone in your body was telling you to stay, to at least to savor one last look at him. But your heart wouldn't allow it.
Wonwoo put down his own cup of coffee and grabbed your arm. Everything he did was giving you mixed signals, avoiding the topic of the kiss earlier and now he wanted you to look at him? Either way, you obeyed. You couldn't resist your brain anymore. When you finally met his eye, he smiled. "I want you to look at me, so that you know I'm serious when I say this."
"Say what?" was all you managed to reply. You had never experienced Wonwoo acting this way before, at least not in the real world. He always seemed to let you lead the conversation and flow of things, while he was acting like a passive player. The hand on your arm and the steering of the conversation was so unlike him that you were a bit alarmed.
"I'm not sure how to put this," Wonwoo started. He still hadn't removed his hand from your arm. It didn't look like he was planning on doing it anytime soon.
When Wonwoo didn't continue, you tried to encourage him a bit by saying: "Go ahead, I don't bite" as you chuckled. Perhaps a bit too laced with nervousness.
"It's just that…" Wonwoo ran his free hand through his hair and let out a huff of frustration. You gave him time to collect his thoughts, rather than give any more words of encouragement. "I know you rejected me before," your breath hitched in your throat. You couldn't remember what you rejected him for, unless he was talking about your friendship, which you thought was fixed at this point. What did Wonwoo feel rejected about if not that?
"Is this about--?" you started, hoping for a clarification, but he stopped you.
"Sorry, Yn. I think I need to finish this without you interrupting. Just to get everything off my chest," he continued. "I really don't want to know how you react before I'm finished."
You weren't sure if you were able to fulfill his wish, since you had a constant need to let your thoughts be heard.
Wonwoo gathered his thoughts before he continued. "I felt really defeated after last time, and I think I wasn't able to communicate all my thoughts. Especially since I didn't want to burden you with it. I think Mingyu might have taken up that task for me," he bit his lip. "I only found out about your whole conversation with him recently, and I just want you to know that his intention was only to take care of me, and he was just so frustrated after seeing me mope around the house. I hope it didn't affect you too much." You were too stunned to speak, and you didn't know how to react. You hadn't known your break had affected Wonwoo just as much as it had affected you. All you could do was shake your head, despite the fact that your relationship with Mingyu was definitely strained at the moment.
"And now we're coming to the hard part." You felt his grip around your arm tighten, not to a point where it was hurting you or hard in any way, but you definitely felt his presence. "Ever since you first spoke to me… No, ever since you walked into the shop on my first day at work, I couldn't stop noticing you. Noticing your presence as you walked into the shop, defeated after a long day of lessons and studying, but always greeting me with a smile as you saw me.
"Noticing you sitting in your usual booth, either distracted by your phone or a video and laughing or sitting in deep concentration reading up on things you visibly didn't understand, and I had to use every power in my body not to go over to you to try to figure out what you were working on. Just in case I would be able to help you.
"After I noticed all your traits that made you special. I just couldn't stop noticing every time you did one of your quirks. Or noticing the order in which you pack your things, which is the exact same each and every time.
"When I got to know you better, I noticed what you liked and what you didn't like. And I swore that I would do everything just to see you happy.
"Especially because whenever you're happy, you brighten my day as well. Just by being there with me. The last month has been darker, without your light to brighten my day. I can't afford to lose you again, so I hope you still want to be friends after what I'm about to say, but I think it will explain my erratic behavior that led to you wanting a break."
He took a deep breath before continuing.
"I was jealous of Seokmin. He knows you so well, and you always seem to brighten when you talk about him. If you're the light of my day, he definitely seems like yours. And I was scared that you were in love with him, but I didn't handle it well." In love with him? Scared? Your heart was beating so fast now that there was no way Wonwoo hadn't noticed. Is this a dream?
"As I said, I hope we might still be friends. Realizing we kissed last night just made it more obvious to me that I needed to convey my feelings to you, at least so that you could reject me again, knowing everything that I have to tell you."
Wonwoo had moved his hand from your arm and was now holding both of your hands.
"Yn. I'm in love with you."
You didn't know how to reply except look at him expectantly. You would have liked to put your arms around his neck to pull him closer to you. Except he was still holding both of your hands, not wanting to let go.
You licked your lips, looked down at his lips, then back into his eyes. "Aren't you going to kiss me?" You cocked your head to the side. You had no idea where all this confidence was coming from. Maybe you really were in a dream. It certainly didn't feel real.
"Kiss you?" At this point you had realized his words of confession were just as much of a nervous ramble as the thoughts in your head at the moment. He let go of your hands now, probably due to the shock caused by your question.
You put your hands around his neck, as per your original plan. Pulling him closer to you, or you to him, you could feel his breath on your cheek. You had never been this close to Wonwoo before. You noticed he had a small mole under one of his eyes, barely visible even at this distance.
None of you closed the distance so you whispered, "it's not like it'll be our first time."
"Is this your answer? To my confession?"
"I'm in love with you too." You said the words you were hoping he wanted to hear. Words you never thought you would speak out loud, since you had long lost hope of him returning your feelings.
"I'll make sure you remember this time." His breath brushed your lips before you felt the touch of them.
You didn't think you had ever experienced a kiss like this before. Fireworks were going off in your head. You weren't able to think straight at all, except for more as Wonwoo pulled away.
The kiss didn't last long, but it felt like forever. You could still feel the soft imprint from where his lips had been only seconds previously.
It wasn't enough for you. You closed the gap between you again, and you could feel Wonwoo responding.
Wonwoo pressed against you with more force this time. Pushed into you so hard that you considered removing one of your hands from around his neck to support yourself on the kitchen counter. After removing one of your hands an inch from his skin, your own skin tingled where you had touched him only moments earlier.
"Let me," he grumbled against your lips. Wonwoo put one of his hands on your hips, a small gasp escaping from your lips as he bit your bottom lip at the same time.
You could feel his kitchen counter pressing into your back. You assumed Wonwoo's hand was also hurting from the pressure of your two bodies and he steadied both of you against it. But like yourself, you assumed he was too caught up in the moment to register anything but bliss.
Wonwoo started kissing you down your chin, moving on to your neck. As you gasped in surprise, you simultaneously opened your eyes in order to savor the moment. Out of the corner of your eye, you spotted something, or rather someone, who hadn't been there earlier.
You started hitting Wonwoo on his back, trying to signal him to stop, but he was too busy sucking on your collarbone. Something you were sure would leave a nasty hickey.
"Wonwoo!" You managed to hiss out eventually, between gritted teeth. "We have company."
Wonwoo, who had been so caught up in you, was taken aback. His eyes were filled with alarm. He quickly got off from you, and pulled a hand through his tousled hair. You were sure you didn't look any better.
"Do you mind?" The stranger asked you. A part of you was glad it wasn't Mingyu who had caught you. You were sure you never would have been able to look him in the eye again.
"Jihoon, hi! How long have you been standing there?" Wonwoo asked. His hand was touching the back of his neck, a sure sign that he was nervous.
You quickly realized you wanted control of the situation, despite the fact that Jihoon had already seen you at his worst. It was probably the worst first impression you had ever made on someone, and you had a pretty good track record.
You turned towards Jihoon, with your back to Wonwoo, who seemed to have retreated into the shadows. "Hi, I'm Yn!" You said as you held out your hand in order to shake his hand, hoping he still wanted to take it despite the fact that it had been far up Wonwoo's shirt.
Jihoon didn't look like you expected. In lack of other points of reference, you had imagined him as a sort of hybrid between Wonwoo and Mingyu. He seemed more like a cross between Soonyoung and Seungcheol, if that was even a possible combination. Either way, he was, like his other two roommates, annoyingly handsome. And although he wasn’t as hot as Wonwoo (obviously), he was as hot as Mingyu believed himself to be.
He didn't take your hand, understandably. Instead, he looked you in the eyes, visibly annoyed and asked: "As in?" You were careful not to take offense in this, hoping that he didn't pay attention or weren't good with names, and not the case being that neither Mingyu nor Wonwoo had mentioned you to him. Or none of your roommates who had partied with him the previous night. Maybe he was just a jerk… which he had all right to be seeing as you had defiled his kitchen just moments ago.
You weren't able to reply as Wonwoo shot in before you. "She's my girlfriend. Yn."
You couldn't contain your shock as you swiveled around to look at Wonwoo. "Are we moving that quickly?" Wonwoo just stared harder at you. You didn't mind. You just moved closer to him, tugged on his shirt (that was somehow still on, even though you had hoped it wasn't) and said: "Boyfriend." You looked up at him and shrugged. "I like it."
Wonwoo planted a small kiss on your lips. "I was hoping you'd say that."
You could hear a sigh, followed by receding footsteps. Although you hadn't been much at Wonwoo's apartment, you had been told that Jihoon was barely home. Hopefully, you wouldn't have to see him much until he warmed up to… this. Something you arguably also had to do. No matter, Jihoon's issues with you were second to whatever was going on between you and Wonwoo.
