The sweated industries consisted of piecework carried out in small workshops with low pay, poor conditions and long hours. Homeworking, one type of 'sweating', offered the worst conditions and pay for such tasks as sewing (see The Fashion for Shopping), making boxes, or wire brushes. Surveys found women often working from dawn until 11pm for less than a living wage in the same room with their children. The women chainmakers had one of the worst sweated jobs, working in sheds in the backyards of their homes hammering out chainlinks for 5s (25p) for a 50-hour week. HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY To all@my Sisters everywhere! ❤️💕💕💕☮️ Mary Jane Seacole (born Grant;[2][3] 23 November 1805 – 14 May 1881)[4] was a British-Jamaican nurse and businesswoman[5][6][7][8][9] who set up the "British Hotel" behind the lines during the Crimean War. She described the hotel as "a mess-table and comfortable quarters for sick and convalescent officers", and provided succour for wounded service men on the battlefield, nursing many of them back to health. Coming from a tradition of Jamaican and West African "doctresses", Seacole displayed "compassion, skills and bravery while nursing soldiers during the Crimean War", through the use of herbal remedies.[5][10] She was posthumously awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit in 1991. I felt as I am born and bred in a town Grimsby, that was at one point The biggest fishing port in the the world I felt, Lillian was an appropriate Lillian Bilocca (née Marshall; 26 May 1929 – 3 August 1988) was a British fisheries worker and campaigner for improved safety in the fishing fleet as leader of the "headscarf revolutionaries" – a group of fishermen's family members. Spurred into action by the Hull triple trawler tragedy of 1968 which claimed 58 lives, she led a direct action campaign to prevent undermanned trawlers from putting to sea and gathered 10,000 signatures for a petition (the Fishermen's Charter) to Harold Wilson's government to strengthen safety legislation. She threatened to picket Wilson's house if he did not take action. Government ministers later implemented all of the measures outlined in the charter.
