Reflection post:

In the videos and article, we can see artists with different waysof portraying art to viewers. In the video about Alice Neel, we can learn from a talented artist who decided to spend her life portraying people and their own realities. For example, in the video the curator shows us a picture of two girls of her neighborhood in which we can see the struggle of the girls shown by the use of dark colors in the painting and in the expression on the girl’s faces that are looking toward the viewers. What impressed me the most about Alice Neel’s work,was her ability to portrayed emotions and conditions in which each person portrayed in the painting is under, it is a unique quality that is not seen often in paintings. 

On the other hand, in the other video about Willem De Kooning we can see how he changed from painting men actors to womenactors. Moreover, later on we can see in his paintings the use of lines which he merges achieving a flow movement in the painting between the line and the color creating a piece of art in which we can notice the figuration and the abstraction style in it to which he returned later on in his life when he explored the theme of the female figure in the landscape. Additionally, during the course of his career he painted a series of black and white pieces in which we can see the present of textures and gesture movement in his calligraphic brushwork. Furthermore, he created additional abstract paintings in his life such as the series of urban landscapes in which we can see his energetic style in the way his brush-strokes moved around the canvas and his use of vibrant colors within it. In Willem’s work, what impresses me then most about his style was the way he showed us figuration and abstraction together in the same painting.

Conversely, in the article about Lucian Freud we learned about the realism of the human figure in his paintings. For example,we have the painting “Benefits Supervisor Sleeping 1995” which he painted a nude model as she is with her wrinkles, foldsand different body shapes showing people on the time that everyone was human no matter the imperfections. Another painting in which he showed us that imperfections are actuallyperfection for him, was in the piece called “Naked Portrait with Reflection” made in 1980. In this case what impressed me the most of this artist is that he painted these paintings even when hewas criticize and was against the realism of the Northern Renaissance painting and associated himself within the French modernist tradition. Moreover, I found interesting the fact that,at the start of his career he painted figures flat and goes later on to the form of the figure in which one example of flat figures was his painting called “Hotel bedroom”.

I think that my favorite artist of the three was Alice Neel because I was fascinated with the way she captured every person’s soul and emotions in her paintings, and their own truths behind each of them. By doing so, she makes every person special in their own way and circumstance and she shows that to the viewer on her paintings.
