Immigration has been a hot-button issue in the US, with both political parties walking on diverging paths. However, the assertiveness of Republicans made it difficult for immigrants to get settled in the US. Now, with the bipartisan agreement reached in the form of the  Equal Access to Green Cards for Legal Employment (EAGLE ACT), this issue seems to go in the right direction. [caption id="attachment_11265" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] EAGLE ACT 2021 is an all inclusive legislation that will pave the way for legal immigration in the United States, helping those who have been denied the legal opportunity to move to the US.[/caption] Addressing the Employment-based Visa Issues: EAGLE ACT is the Solution The most significant achievement that could come out of the Eagle Act is that it could address the employment-based visa issues.  Many professional foreign workers are working inside the United States on non-immigrant visas such as H1-B visas or L-1 visas and aspire to get a green card and become permanent residents of the country and contribute to its prosperity.   However, there is a 140,000 employee limit per year with a country limit of 7%. The 7% limit is a huge problem for professionals from populous countries like India and China who have to wait for decades to become US residents.  The EAGLE Act aims to remove the per-country limit and introduce reforms in the employment-based visa system.   Many attempts were made in this regard, including the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act of 2019 (HR 1044) and the High Skilled Immigration Act, but all of them failed because Congress failed to reach an agreement. However, the EAGLE Act could prove to be a success for several reasons, primarily because it is a bipartisan effort introduced jointly by a Republican and a Democrat.  Secondly, Democrats have the majority in both the Houses with the occupation of the executive branch. As many Republicans endorse this act, bypassing the filibuster limit does not seem a big problem. Additionally, the elimination of the phrase "Association of Chinese Military and Communist Party" could also prove to be a breakthrough, as it was one of the most significant objections to previous attempts in this regard.  The bill also limits the H1-B and H-4 visa applying for the green card during the nine-year transition period, which is also a good thing considering the objections raised by Republicans on previous such bills.  Nevertheless, having the H1-B part is quite tricky because it could limit the functioning of outsourcing companies that could try to lobby against the bill for changes to these clauses. [caption id="attachment_11267" align="aligncenter" width="900"] While the issue of illegal immigration also remained in the limelight in the US, only legal immigration will help the country grow in the longer run.[/caption] Uplifting International Talent in the US: The Motto of the EAGLE ACT Professionals from across the world see the United States as the land of opportunity, but they have been facing many problems in entering the country. The main problem is that the United States is facing a general shortage of employment-based green cards, and all applicants face at least some kind of delay in securing a permanent visa. Even though the employment-based applicants live in America without having the fear of getting thrown out of the country, there are still plenty of things they cannot do. They cannot become entrepreneurs and start new businesses that could create jobs for the American people. Most importantly, they are unable to visit their home country, as there is always the risk that they will be held back from returning to the United States.  They could not get promoted no matter how talented and hardworking they were. Promotion could only be attained after starting over in the employment-based green card, and workers also could not change jobs or employers.  They also have to secure
a student visa for their children once they turn 21 or could face forced deportation despite living in the country for decades and paying taxes as an ordinary citizen. The EAGLE Act could be a one-stop solution to all of these problems. This act will provide these workers for the first time in the history of the United States with the statutory bar against business visas at work.  This will also allow the Department of Labor to set a fee to regulate the H1-B workers' program instead of it being an under-funded mandate right now.  Employers that had an excess of foreign workers, i.e., more than 50 percent of the workforce, will not be able to allow any more foreign workers to ensure the balance of American workers.  It will also make it illegal to advertise jobs as "only available to H1-B visa holders" to ensure that foreign workers are not prioritized over the American workers.  This could solve the persistent crisis of too many job openings that could lead toward economic destruction otherwise. The only argument that Republicans had against providing green cards to foreign workers was that they were eating up the American jobs meant for the American people.  This act will guarantee the safeguarding of American jobs while also providing foreign citizens with the opportunity to start their careers in the United States and contribute to the economic uplift of the country.    EAGLE Act will Refine Immigration Doctrine in the US The assumption that the  EAGLE Act will only provide rights to skilled immigration is not completely accurate because it will also influence other aspects such as the Adjustment of Status, Dependent, and Employment Authorization Document (EAD) provision. This act will speed up the adjustment of the status of 1-485 applications. This means that if a foreign person working on an H1-B visa is applying for adjustment of status, his dependents, including parents, wife/husband, and children, will also qualify for the green card.  Any work authorization application submitted for the green card will include the bona fide job offer known as 1-485 Supplement J that will be needed to adjudicate the application.  The 1-485 Supplement J is used in connection with filling the new 1-485 application to a new employer or job offer. This confirms the job offer, informing USCIS with 1-485 porting cases under AC21. [caption id="attachment_11268" align="aligncenter" width="650"] As the EAGLE Act lifts the 7 percent cap on giving green cards ro people of different countries, populous countries like China and India will have an easy way in sending more public to the US for legal immigration.[/caption] EAGLE Act is a Tool for Diplomacy for the US The skilled immigration laws in the United States are mostly affecting professionals from India and China, the top two populous countries in the world. Due to the huge population density, the workers from these and other populous countries have to wait for decades to get their green cards, while workers from less dense countries could easily get them in no time.  Eliminating the 7% country cap will remove the limitations in the current laws that force workers, especially from these nations, to spend decades as an outsider in a country where they work and contribute to its economy.    Final Thoughts Apart from addressing the challenge of workers from populous countries like China, the EAGLE Act will also strengthen American diplomacy and leadership in the strategically important Indo-pacific region.  The act will provide the country with the tools needed to protect American interests in the Indo-pacific region by strengthening the engagement with strategic allies such as India and establishing people-to-people engagement with Southeast Asian regimes, most of which are densely populated.  The EAGLE Act was introduced at a time when the Biden Administration was working to promote the establishment of a Quad Intra-Parliamenta
ry working group that will work to promote ties between legislators of countries like the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, the key partners with shared values of interest in the Indo-Pacific region.  The EAGLE Act is strategic legislation that is not only an immigration bill but comes with several other strategic gifts that will protect United States' interests all over the globe in a subtle yet efficient way.

“The Kashmir Cause & The Pakistan’s Perspective”
The Kashmir conflict has remained a long-standing issue that has shaped the geopolitical landscape of South Asia for decades. Pakistan has consistently advocated for the rights of the people of Kashmir and has played a crucial role in highlighting the Kashmir cause on international platforms.
The roots of the Kashmir conflict can be traced back to the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. At the time of independence from British rule, the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, with a Muslim-majority population, faced a dilemma of choosing between India and Pakistan. Despite the majority of the population being Muslim, the Hindu ruler decided to accede to India, leading to a disputed status for the region.
Pakistan's primary argument regarding the Kashmir issue is based on the principle of the right to self-determination. The United Nations Security Council passed several resolutions, including Resolution 47 in 1948, which called for a plebiscite in Kashmir to determine its future. Pakistan asserts that the people of Kashmir should have the right to decide their political destiny through a fair and impartial plebiscite.
Pakistan has consistently raised concerns about human rights violations in Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Reports of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and arbitrary detentions have been documented by international human rights organizations. Pakistan highlights the need for an independent investigation into these allegations and urges the international community to address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Kashmir conflict has resulted in periodic cross-border tensions and armed skirmishes between India and Pakistan. The Line of Control (LoC), a de facto border dividing the region, has witnessed frequent ceasefire violations and military confrontations. Pakistan emphasizes the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute to ensure regional stability and alleviate security concerns.
Pakistan has consistently sought international support for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. It has raised the matter at various international forums, including the United Nations General Assembly, to garner attention and promote dialogue between India and Pakistan. Pakistan argues that a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute is vital for lasting peace in the region.
Pakistan's stance on the Kashmir cause also reflects its concern for the welfare and aspirations of the Kashmiri people. It advocates for their fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Pakistan believes that the resolution of the Kashmir issue will pave the way for the socio-economic development and prosperity of the Kashmiri people.
The Kashmir cause holds deep significance not only for Pakistan but also for the regional peace and stability of the South Asia, stemming from historical, political, and humanitarian concerns. Pakistan's point of view on the Kashmir issue centers around the principles of self-determination, human rights, and regional stability. By advocating for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and international support, Pakistan aims to ensure a just and lasting solution that respects the rights and aspirations of the people of Kashmir. It is crucial for the international community to recognize and address the Kashmir issue as a means to foster peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

I have various levels to my dreams and it depends on the level as to how often I have that type of dream. I’m not sure if overthinking causes them. But I do know having the dreams causes me to think more after I wake.
Here are my personal dream types:
💙 Normal dreams - 💙 This is a dream that revolves around one or two subjects or symbols. It’s a pretty simple dream. It may or may not make sense. I’ll most likely forget about it when I wake, or by the end of the day. These probably occur at least once a night, if not more.
💙 Weird dreams - 💙 These are similar to Normal dreams except they are truly strange. It’ll mix symbols that make no sense. I’ll wake up wondering what the hell I just dreamed about. These aren’t as common as the Normal dreams. Those that I remember may occur about once a week or two.
💙 Story dreams - 💙 These are dreams that are like I’m watching a movie. I’m either within the mind of the ‘main character’ or I’m an invisible watcher to the events. These can be ordinary stories or can also fall into the Nightmare category. I don’t have these sorts of dreams as often as I used to.
💙 Dreamwalker dreams - 💙 For me, a dreamwalker is someone who can travel in their dreams. I have at least 5 regular locations I visit while I sleep. These are places I know so well that if I ever found them while awake, I’d know exactly where to go to get around. These dreams occur maybe once or twice a month.
💙 Stress dreams - 💙 This is a dream where I wake feeling anxious. The themes usually involve being teased and emotionally tormented. As though I’ve been picked on all night. These dreams occur more often when I’m already feeling stressed about something while awake.
💙 Disaster dreams - 💙 These are dreams about some sort of natural disaster, post-apocalyptic events, or something that is supposed to end the world. Usually, they involve weather or geological events, bombs, or (haha) zombies. I’ve had these fairly regularly my whole life.
💙 Creepy AF dreams - 💙 Similar to a Story dream, but these dreams are one step above a full nightmare. They involve all the scary elements of a nightmare, but I’m not fully interacting with it, nor it with me. Like I’m walking through a created haunted house in someone else’s mind where nothing can touch me. It’s creepy, but overall, not dangerous. I don’t have these dreams very often, maybe once or twice a year, depending on waking situations.
💙 Nightmares - 💙 The worst. These are dreams that are realistic and frightening, leaving me feeling quite traumatized. They are usually a Story dream taken to the extreme. I’ve often wondered if I was trapped inside various random people’s bad memories. I am fully interacting and stuck in the scenario until it unfolds to the end. Though, I have learned how to wake myself up right before I (or the person in the dream) is supposed to die. I used to have Nightmares more often in the past. I rarely have these now.
Here are examples from my dream journal for each of the above types I listed.
💤 **Please know that some of the content below might be SCARY** 💤
⭐ Normal dream - ⭐ I was with a group of people. One of them I know was male. He was a priest or holy man. We were walking together on a dirt road and there were trees around us. There was a clearing where I could see through the trees and I saw mountains way off in the distance. I thought it was so pretty so I took my out camera and snapped pictures. Off to the left of the mountains, I saw a bay. On the bay was a huge bridge that reminded me of the golden gate but it was bigger. Something about the bridge scared me.
I took more pictures. Trees blocked my view so I moved around to try and find a clearer view. The holy man with me said, "you're seeing what you're meant to see. Let it become clear on its own". When I looked back at the bridge it was covered in fog and I couldn't see it anymore.
⭐ Weird dream - ⭐ I was in an old building. It looked like a stone temple. It was dusty. Someone was with me and he was trying to get a spell or a machine to work. There was a big egg-shaped container with a line going longways through it so it could open. It reminded me of a coffin except it was egg-shaped.
I went over to the egg coffin and opened it. Inside was a little boy. I was wondering what a little boy is doing inside the coffin? I touched him and he woke up and I was glad that he wasn't dead. I helped him out of the coffin and he followed me around. He said, "I'm supposed to visit you soon". I said, "but you're visiting me now". He shook his head and said, "no not like this". That's all I remember.
⭐ Story dream - ⭐ The dream went through an entire sequence of events in someone else’s life that spanned about a year. I lived alone in a house that had no lights. I was pregnant and nobody to talk with about it. Two or three older women came to my house to keep me company. They said that they would explain things to me and answer any questions I had. They answered basic questions because I was too afraid to ask what I was really thinking. They offered to stay with me but I told them that I would be fine, so they left. I spent a great deal of time alone and crying.
When I was in the hospital to have the baby, I felt detached from everything. I was pregnant, and then I had a baby. He was a boy and I named him Delancey. I brought him home and in my heart, I was happy he was here, yet there was a sadness in my heart. When it came time to introduce Delancey to other people I knew, I put him in a small stroller. I went to a workplace where I knew some people. They came out and fawned over the baby and were excited about him being there. Again I felt detached and put on a happy face.
There was an office or room inside the workplace that I went into. It was empty and I knew it was the room that belonged to my baby's father. My thoughts lingered on him and how he died before he knew I was even pregnant. I started crying, holding Delancey to my chest, trying to talk out loud to the baby's father that he had a son, and I was so sorry that he wasn't here to share in his life with me. My heart hurt so badly for this woman I shared life with in my dream.
⭐ Dreamwalker dream - ⭐ In this dream, I returned to a dream location I've been in before. The place always feels like India, yet it also feels other-worldly. In past dreams, I'm walking through a marketplace during different stages of prosperity. Sometimes the marketplace is active and thriving, and other times it's desolate with people sitting on the ground as if they're starving.
Last night the location felt desperate. In the dream, I remembered being here before, so I took a good look around to gather my sense of direction. I always entered the marketplace from a path in the near center, and the marketplace extended off to the right and left of me. The ground is not paved. It's covered with red-orange dirt. I always seem to know someone in this location and I went looking for them.
Near the marketplace stood a small hut with a blanket for a door. I stared at it for a long time, but I don't recall why I hesitated to go in. Outside of the hut, a small boy came over to me. His skin was deep brown and his hair was short and black. Indian or Arabic features. I recognized him as he asked, "do you want to buy some?" He had jewelry in his hand.
I looked in my hand and saw that I carried an amulet in the shape of the eye of Horus. It was new and shiny and felt out of place in my surroundings. The boy looked at it and said, "I can give you something better". I asked him, "why are you selling jewelry away from the marketplace?" He looked at me in silence, but his eyes looked very sad. He hurried away before I could say anything more.
I finally went inside the hut. Before I went inside, I knew that something was wrong. Several people were huddled together on the dirt floor. One person cradled the head of a child on his lap. I knew the child was sick, and possibly the others were too. I felt as though I had the capability to heal them but I think I knew I was too late to do any serious help. They pleaded to me to please try. It hurt to look at them, and I knew that my efforts wouldn't save them, but I knelt down and attempted to soothe their pain. The child weakly held my hand and such an overwhelming feeling of helplessness went through me that it pulled me right out of the dream.
⭐ Stress dream - ⭐ In my dream, I saw people outside. One man said to a woman there "I'll buy you ice cream with a cone". The woman looked happy about the ice cream at first. But then she was upset when he mentioned a cone. She walked away. The man didn't know what upset her.
Then I saw a memory inside the woman's thoughts. I shared space with her. The woman was a 5-year-old little girl. She sat in-between her parents on a bench. The girl had won a prize and her prize was an ice cream cone. Her father said he would test the ice cream to see if it was OK. He ate the ice cream and didn't give it back to the girl.
The girl kept saying "can I have some now?" But he wouldn't give it back. He said, "this tastes so good". The girl got upset and started to cry. She looked at her mother and said: "he won't give me my ice cream". Her mother made faces at the girl and repeated what the girl said, repeating it in a teasing voice. The girl cried and the father kept eating the cone until it was gone. The girl didn't get any of the ice cream that was her prize for winning something. I knew she felt very upset because she never had special ice cream like that before.
⭐ Disaster dream - ⭐ In this dream, I was at a beach. I walked in the water out pretty far because the water was shallow. I went out and the water was only at my waist. Then I noticed a disturbance in the water and a large whirlpool appeared. In a short amount of time, all the water in the ocean drained down through a large crack in the ocean floor. I knew that a larger disaster was coming, that an earthquake was going to happen. I went around the beach to all the people who were standing there staring at the empty ocean, trying to warn them that a big earthquake was coming, but no one seemed to hear me or care. I decided to leave the beach and hurried back home. I ran into the house to grab my pets. I had only one cat and two small dogs. I put them into my jeep and called my brother on a cell phone to warn him. He seemed too tired to care. I drove someplace safer.
⭐ Creepy AF dream - ⭐ I was inside a room that was supposed to be my bedroom. There was a man in my room, but I wasn't sure if he was there or not. He stood in the corner of the room watching me and said nothing. I had a creepy feeling so I went to the window. I was on the second floor. Looking down, I saw another man standing there. He wore white and stood very still. He looked right up at me and stared. He didn't move and kept staring at me. I was afraid so I left that window and looked out the other window. Another man wearing white stood very still and stared up at me.
I hurried away and turned to look at the man in my room. He said, "so you can see us, can you?" I wanted to get out of the room, but couldn't find the door. The man walked closer to me and said, "I was going to wait until later. But since you can see me I'm going to kill you now." He had something in his hand and he came closer to me. I sat on the floor and I pushed myself against the wall using my feet. He stood over me and stared at me for a long time. I was still sitting on the floor, but my dead body was laying on the floor in front of me. It scared me so much to see that. The man leaned over my body and talked.
A woman and another person came into the room. She saw my body on the floor and was angry. She picked the man up and took a dagger and stabbed him in the chest many times. Then she threw him on the floor. She looked right at me sitting on the floor and stepped over my body. She told me to follow her and she would find a safe place for me. I was very scared. But I followed her.
⭐ Nightmare - ⭐ I was inside someone's house. Other people were living in this house with me and they were my family. Another stranger lived in the house too. He was very dangerous, but I was the only one who could see him. He took each of my family one at a time and sliced their throats with a long razor. He forced me to watch him doing this. I could see this happening, but the other family members didn't seem to realize what was going on. I tried to tell them they needed to leave the house, but they didn't understand me. He grabbed another person and sliced them too. I saw the razor going into their skin and I saw blood everywhere. He kept doing this until they were all dead.
Then he said he was going to do the same to me. He grabbed me and showed me the razor knife and moved it over my skin. He wasn't cutting me at first. I tried to get away from him. He said he was very sorry and there was no one else left so I was next. Then the other person I shared the dream-thoughts with began talking to him. She was screaming and saying she didn't want to die. I think she was a she. I don't know for sure. I could still see through her eyes and I tried to close my eyes. But I couldn't because her eyes weren't closed. Then the telephone woke me up.
— Those are some of my dreams from over the years. It took me forever to go through them and pick these. I have so many that could’ve worked for each category.
And to answer the original question, there were times when I’ve had nightmares very often and times when they were rare. The frequency seems to depend on what’s taking place in my life. 💗
Thanks for the question. 😊

A thought experiment on Silicon Valley’s third era
[ read the tweetstorm if you’re in a rush]
June 19th marks the end of American slavery, July 4th American Independence and July 14th the storming of the Bastille. It’s also my 40th birthday, and I’m exploring what we can learn from the past to help navigate today’s struggles for racial justice and economic freedom.
Tumblr media
1940-1980: “Atoms” and the military-industrial-labor complex
My dad arrived in the Bay Area in 1970-1971 to get his PhD at Berkeley - just as the area was being rebranded as Silicon Valley.
Free from the stifling hierarchy of the East, the Bay was America’s center for social, technical and institutional change. Black Panthers policed the police in Oakland, shiny BART trains crossed the Bay to SF where the Gay Rights movement was flourishing. My family tree waited a millennia for India to recognize intercaste marriage. My parents would see radical social change in America across every axis in a single generation. Bold leadership in the 60s expanded civil rights and embraced immigration. They (and I) benefited greatly from an economic and social foundation that had been laid over many decades.
Caterpillar Tractor - founded in the Bay Area - embodied the spirit of this era. It went from liberating France in WW2 to building a massive middle class, unionized labor force. Cat later moved its headquarters to Peoria, Illinois - because in this era, cities across the country - not just the coasts - had the ability to compete. Since WW2, America pursued an intentional strategy of geographically broad-based economic development - via highways, airline regulation and distributed national labs.
Caterpillar didn’t just give Peoria a chance, it also gave my dad a chance to put down roots in America by sponsoring his green card. There was no H1B limbo. The nexus of military, industry and labor unions brought immigrants, Women and Blacks into the workforce - with paid apprenticeships (not exorbitant higher education) and technically-focused community colleges paving the way for millions. My mom learned COBOL while her toddlers played in the back of class. Even Hunter’s Point in SF was vibrant during much of this period.  (Of course, it was far from a halcyon era - the war machine had massive human cost globally and civil rights were far from evenly enforced in America.)
Tumblr media
And while atoms reigned supreme during this era, the military and government patiently invested risk capital in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors and software/networking to prepare America for its future.
1980-2020: “Bits” and global capital, jackrocks and polarization
In 1980, Reagan was elected President - and I was born. This would also be the peak of private sector labor employment in the US and the beginning of global capital (and the multinational companies they backed) as the leading force in forging the social contract.
They promised us that countries with McDonald’s would never go to war with each other. Indeed the Berlin Wall fell, Asian laborers got jobs and Americans could buy cheap stuff at WalMart. Global capital (bits) put atoms inside shipping containers and sent them around the world - abstracting consumers from the manufacturing base.
The writing was on the wall for unions.
Tumblr media
As a middle schooler, I saw Cat management and labor (UAW) locked into a multi-year strike over the future. The front line was not in a boardroom or on the picket line. It was neighborhoods, schools and community groups. I remember when a classmate whose dad was in the union talked about how folks in the factory were peeing on effigies of management - including my dad.
Naturally I knew which side I was on. Cat needed wage concessions and freedom to operate to be globally competitive.  I’d read Akio Morita, TPS and Lee Iacocca. I worried about Japan Inc. eating our lunch (yes as a 12 year old!) UAW workers and families were much more grounded. They needed a livelihood and wanted certainty for their future.
---
War continued to wage into high school. We came home one day to find “jackrocks” outside of our driveway - a tool used in feudal Japan to thwart the advancing armies - horses, chariots - etc. of those in power.  In <60 years, Caterpillar had gone from transforming America’s agrarian society to becoming the enemy of American workers. We had the GOP’s Contract with America (stored in my Trapper Keeper) and Clinton signing NAFTA within a couple years. Both parties supported global capital and global capital supported both parties. Maybe jackrocks worked better than voting?
Corporate America soon figured out that if your workers were in China, Mexico or the South, it’s harder for them to stick jack rocks in your driveway. If your kids go to private school or you live in a quasi-private suburb, they’ll be insulated from the wrath of the have-nots in heavily policed, declining urban centers. No peeing on your effigy or having your kid hear about it!
---
After college, I became an analyst at Bain & Company. Once an auto parts company hired us to do a “portfolio review”. I meticulously compared the costs of building mirrors in Eastern Michigan or Malaysia - creating a zero defect Excel model. Guess which location won? The auto parts company - like Cat - had the freedom to choose where to put jobs.
But what freedom did the workers have? Marie Antoinette once said “let them eat cake”. The elites of our era now say “let them move”. Social capital is critical for folks navigating change. The educated elite take the portability of social capital (embedded in college degrees and iMessage threads) as a given.
But place and social capital are deeply intertwined especially if you’re poor or a minority. While the deep introspection elites once had during 2016 has now been paved over by new crises, we should never forget that there’s a cost to society of losing its manufacturing base and jobs. How do you model the costs of broken families, drug addiction and a polarized electorate in Excel?
---
I grew disillusioned with management by spreadsheet. But I saw a bright spot on the horizon: tech. I remember opening my first iPod, getting 1000 songs in my pocket and believing that America had a shot at leading a new generation of consumer electronics when everyone a decade earlier had written us off in favor of the Japanese. Perhaps tech could bring jobs and prosperity back to the country? I wanted to be part of it.
So I moved to the Valley in 2004 and joined a VC fund. I saw how the VC funding model that Silicon Valley was built on incentivizes high-risk, high-leverage and massive-scale. It encourages companies to cherry-pick top-end talent (immigrants, marquee college grads) to build the differentiated bits. Pick the highest leverage point in the stack, outsource everything else - by building in China and/or pushing the last-mile to an ecosystem that you can control at arms length.
Tech companies could more than pay back the largely fixed costs of software / semiconductor design from the large and homogenous American market. This dynamic attracted massive amounts of private risk capital and enabled aggressive expansion abroad. This model didn’t work for everything (I got burned with cleantech) - but it worked amazingly well for broad swaths of enterprise software, consumer services and marketplaces. I saw how tech could be an incredible lever for wealth creation. But every visit back home to the Rust Belt made me wonder - wealth creation for whom?

2020+ - A thought experiment on institutional innovation and putting people first
July 14, 2020 - Q2 Earnings - CEO, MEGA TECH CORP - Hi everyone. These aren’t normal times. We’re not going to talk about our 10Q on this call. We’re here to talk about the next 10 years. So if you’re here for DAUs, ARR or CPC, you can drop off now.

We’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the race, health and economic crises our country faces. Over the last few weeks, I’ve asked our exec team to leave their homes, their Zoom calls, their DoorDash deliveries - to join protests and explore our community through new eyes.
Race & Place: On Juneteenth, we biked from Sheraton Place to Hunters Point to Tanforan. We saw the real life impact of redlining, mass incarceration of Blacks and the lack of jobs from decades ago - and how our headquarters sustain - rather than disrupt - the region’s policies of de facto segregation. We also remembered how political demagogues once imprisoned our neighbors of Japanese descent. We see today how their rhetoric affects our Black neighbors and colleagues. What might it do tomorrow to folks without legal status in ag/service industries that California depends or the H1Bs we depend on? What does diversity & inclusion mean in this context?
Jobs: The next Friday we biked from SRI to PARC to Sunnyvale and Moffett Field. Our industry once dreamed of a bicycle for the mind and embraced technical education and apprenticeship as a path in the door for Women and Blacks. Meanwhile we’ve pushed vast swaths of work to contractors or platform-mediated transactions - making it harder to use up-skilling as a talent lever like manufacturing employers did in the last era. What’s the impact on income mobility? At what point will 40 million unemployed Americans affect our share prices and the stability of society?
Climate: On Independence Day, we biked on the Bay Trail past landfills, superfund sites and the 101 - alongside poor and minority neighborhoods with terrible health outcomes. We talked about the Bay Area weather forecast for 2060 “fire with a chance of flooding”. We passed abandoned railways and dreams of regional transport - the result of which is folks commuting hours each way from the central valley to work service jobs in our campuses.  We wondered about the long run political consequences of isolating our employee base inside the WiFi confines of a private bus network. Where is the voting base to drive institutional change? How many axles or tires will our commuter buses need to keep them safe from jackrocks on the 101?
Health: Last week, we rode from the old Permanente cement quarry to 101 (built by the same cement workers.)  We talked about how Kaiser - a private employer of low-skilled workers - internalized their healthcare needs, pursued disruptive innovation and faced fierce clashes with the medical establishment. We thought about how COVID is exposing the brittleness of our employee’s isolation inside a private insurance bubble. No one can be healthy in a pandemic without competent public health infrastructure. Meanwhile, the growing cost of private healthcare makes it harder for tech - let alone the rest of the country - to employ American workers across the wage spectrum - exacerbating job loss and instability.
And as we spoke with others, we saw how the issues that Silicon Valley faces are not unique to one metropolitan area or one industry. It just happens to be the ultimate archetype of Global Capitalism and de facto segregated American metros.
What we now see - more clearly than ever - is that our entire company, our entire industry, our entire Valley - is built on a flawed foundation.
We can no longer just focus on the magical software bits and hope someone else figures out racial equity, employment, climate and health. This is Joel Spolsky’s Law of Leaky Abstractions on the ultimate scale. The abstractions are failing - and we’re seeing bugs and unintended consequences all around us. And the more we invest to deal with one-off bugs, the more likely we are to calcify change and imprison ourselves inside a failing stack.
It’s like we decided to build the world’s notification service on Ruby on Rails - or building an iPhone competitor on Windows CE. Fail Whale everywhere. Unfortunately, America’s democratic institutions are in poor condition. They are struggling to deal with inequality let alone looming environmental disaster.  A polarized electorate - particularly at the national level - leads to populism and makes it hard for these institutions to execute meaningful, long-term plans.
We talk a lot about speech, misinformation, fairness of targeted ads etc. But it’s becoming clear that UX, linear algebra/training data and monetization in our products is just the tip of the spear to address polarization. We believe polarization is a product of the underlying conditions of civil rights, education, health and climate debt that affect Americans differentially based on race, wealth, neighborhood and region. e.g. If we care about justice, how far does focusing on the fairness of employment ads get us in a world when many people lack the skills and negotiating power to secure a living wage?
So will today’s peaceful protests for racial justice expand into tomorrow’s revolution(s) for economic freedom? If you don’t think things are bad now, think about what happens when the stimulus checks run out. Take a look at the amount of debt in the public sector, use any imagination about COVID, work out what happens to their tax base / pension returns and consider the impact on public services, public servants and their votes.  MMT better be a real thing. Maybe we didn’t start these fires, but that refrain won’t save us when the flames come our way.
We’re done debating why we need to act. It’s clear America needs our help. Let’s talk about how we’re going to rise to the occasion. Our mantra will be “internalize, innovate, institutionalize”.
Tumblr media
First, we’re going to internalize our problems. I’m here to tell you that issues of racial and economic justice are not just moral issues but they’re financial issues. Racial debt, education debt, health debt, climate debt  will hit us harder and harder each year.  (By the way, revolution probably won’t be great for your DCF models.) So we’re going to recognize these off-balance sheet liabilities - which amount to a few hundred billion in the US alone over the next 10 years for a company at our scale.
Second, we’re going to innovate against these systemic problems - but our only shot at making progress is if we realign the entire company’s mission to address them. This is not about optics. This is not about philanthropy. This is not another bet.  We’re putting all our chips behind one bet - America. It's the country that backed us in the first place, it's where most of our people are and most of our profits.  The job for our existing products, platforms and cash flows will be to advance four areas: place / race, skilling / manufacturing, health / food and climate / mobility - starting in America. The board will measure me based on job creation and diversity.  It should go without saying that we’re pausing dividends and buybacks for the foreseeable future. Every dollar will serve our mission.  Every senior leader will need to sign up for our new mission - and those who choose to stay will receive a new, back-end loaded, 10 year vesting schedule.  We want them focused on the long-term health of society - not the whims of Robinhood day traders or strengthening the moats of existing products. We will need to invent entirely new ways to operate and ship products. As Joel Spolsky said, “when you need to hire a programmer to do mostly VB programming, it’s not good enough to hire a VB programmer, because they will get completely stuck in tar every time the VB abstraction leaks”.  We need engineers, designers and product managers that will look deep into the stack, confront the racial, job access, health and climate debts that our products, our companies and our communities are built on top of. This is not about CYA process to protect cash cows or throwing things over the fence to policy. We will need to innovate across technical, cultural and organizational lines. This requires deep understanding and curiosity. This will bring more scrutiny to our company - not less.  Not everyone’s going to be on board - so for the next 12 months, we’re giving folks a one-time buyout if they want to leave.
Third, we can’t do any of this by ourselves.  The problems are too big. Our role will be to provide enlightened risk capital (from our balance sheet or by re-vectoring operating spend) alongside R&D, product, platform leverage to help leaders and innovators pursue solutions in these areas.  Of course we will work with our peers and the public sector wherever possible - buying/R&D consortia, public-private partnerships, trusts, etc. But the new era and landscape demands that we explore institutional models beyond global capital/startups, labor unions, NGOs or government. We need models that can more flexibly align people and purpose, that innovate on individualized vs. socialized risk/reward - and that ultimately help build and sustain local, social capital.  It’s difficult to say what these will look like - but increasingly figuring this out will be existential for our core business too. Right now, it doesn’t matter if you’re designing the best cameras in Cupertino or the best way to see their snaps in Santa Monica - we’re all just building layers of an attention stack for global capital. Our Beijing competitors have figured this out. ByteDance is already eating our lunch. They’re using the same tech inputs as us - UX, ML and large-scale systems - which are now a commodity - but with vastly lower consequences for the content they show - creating a superior operating / scaling model. They’re not internalizing social or political cost.

What we need in this era is the accumulation stack - where each interaction builds social capital.  This is not about global likes. This is about local respect. We’ll create competitive advantage when we build products that reach across race / economic lines to harness America’s amazing melting pot and do so in ways that build livelihoods / property rights for creators and stakeholders.
Tumblr media
With this operating model in place, we’re committing to fundamental change in four areas:
Place & Race - We’re done with de facto segregation. Over the next 10 years, 100% of our jobs will be in diverse communities that embrace inclusive schooling, policing, housing and transit policies. (Starting tomorrow, we’re putting red lines on our maps around towns with exclusionary zoning.) This is not about privatizing cities or an HQ2-style play to extract concessions. This is about investing our risk capital and our reputation to innovate alongside government. How do we bring world-class education to neighborhoods with concentrated poverty? What is the future of digital/hybrid charter schooling? Unbundled, community-driven public safety? We’ll embrace “remote-first” as a means to this end. The Bay will become one physical node alongside others (e.g. Atlanta, DC, LA) creating an Interstate Knowledge System that develops diverse talent across the country. We’re going to coordinate our investment with leading peers - since after all, this isn’t about cost savings or cherry-picking. It’s about broadening our country’s economic base.
Skilling & Manufacturing - We will 10x the tech talent pool in 10 years - by inventing new apprenticeship models that bring women, minorities and the poor into the workforce. We’ll start with our existing contractor base, convert them to new employment models with expanded benefits and paths for upward mobility.  Next, we will invent new productivity tools for all types of workers - from the front office to mobile work to call center - that brings the power of AI and programming to everyone. These will be deeply tied into new platforms for work designed from the bottom-up to build social and financial capital for individual workers and teams.  Last, we’re going to manufacture most of our hardware products - from silicon all the way to systems - entirely in the US within 10 years. This will require massive investment, collaboration and innovation. It may require a revolution in robotics - but we will pursue this in a way that makes the American worker competitive - not a commodity to be automated away. If we’re successful, the dividends of our investment here will have massive spillover benefits to every other sector of manufacturing in the US - autos, etc. - including ones we have yet to dream up.
Health & Food -  We’re not going to tolerate a two-class system for healthcare anymore. As we convert our contract workforce to new employment models, we’re going to have to innovate on the fundamental quality/cost paradigm across our benefit stack. This may feel like a step down but it will put us (and the rest of society if we’re successful) on a fundamentally better long-term trajectory.  Food is part of Health, and we’re going to innovate there too. Free food for employees is not going to come back post-COVID. Instead, we’ll use our food infrastructure to bootstrap cooperatively-owned cloud kitchens. We’ll provide capital to former contractors - mostly Black and Hispanic - to invest and own these. We’ll build platforms to help them sell food to employees (partly subsidized), participate in new “food for health” programs and eventually disrupt the extractive labor practices we see across food, grocery and delivery.
Climate & Mobility - Lastly, we’ll be imposing a carbon tax on all aspects of our own operations - which we’ll use to “fund” innovation in this space - with a primary focus on job creation.  This is an area where we’re going to be looking far beyond our four walls from the beginning.  As a first step, we’re teaming up with Elon and Gavin Newsom to buy PG&E out of bankruptcy and restructure it as a 21st century “decentralized” utility.  It will accelerate the electrification of mobility - financing networked batteries for buses, cars and bikes along with charging infrastructure - and leading a massive job creation program focused on energy efficiency.  Speaking of mobility, private buses aren’t coming back after COVID. Instead, we’re teaming up with all of our peers to create a Bay-wide network of electric buses (with bundled e-bikes) that will service folks of all walks of life - including our own employee base.  Oh and one more thing - we’re bringing together the world’s most advanced privacy/identity architecture and computational video/audio to bake public health infrastructure directly into the buses. For COVID and beyond. None of this is a substitute for competent, democratically accountable regional authorities. This is us investing risk capital on behalf of society - with the goal of empowering these authorities. Yes the New York Times will have a field day with this. Maybe in time they’ll leave their bubble, enter the real world, see the sorry state of their institutions - the behavioral health and infrastructure crises on their crumbling streets - and get on board. Until then, our job is to be patient longer than they can be inflammatory.
Open technology for global progress - While we have to prioritize America given the scale of problems, the intent is not to abandon the rest of the world or hold back it’s progress. We feel the opposite - that over the coming decades each country’s technology sectors will thrive. To get there, we will continue to invest patiently - hiring, training, partnering, investing and innovating - but with a clear north star to help each country develop local leaders in new areas. Long-term, we’ll continue to contribute open technology that others can build upon.
America should be the proverbial city on a hill for everyone - not a metaverse for the rich with the poor dying in the streets. We don’t have much time so we’re getting to work now. See you next quarter.
----
This call may be imaginary but none of this is sci-fi or requires MMT. What it requires is us to care. To act. Join me on bike rides to explore our past and discuss what tangible actions Silicon Valley’s leading companies can take in the coming quarters and years. Logistics here for rides on June 19, June 26, July 2 and July 10!

Top 5 Speech On Independence day (14th August) Speech No- 1 | 14, August
Respected sir and my compatriots! Our homeland Pakistan is not like other lands of the world, which are inherited to its citizens but Pakistan is the country, for which Muslims of Combined India served their bones as bricks and their blood as water, to set the bases for Pakistan. Only those can judge the true value of this inestimable creation who himself has participated in building this country, and sacrificed his wife, children, sisters, brothers and all his blood relations. To achieve this sacred land, millions of Muslims met martyrdom. Countless children were killed in front of their mothers and lots of families were burnt inside their houses. Many virtuous women jumped into wells and canals and casted their lives just to build up Pakistan. Countless children got orphaned and missed their parents for whole their lives. Valleys of Pakistan are containing congruence’s of paradise. Beautiful green landscapes and spacious farms are spitting the gold. We also see that we are rich in every kind of freedom and facilities but do not ever forget that in making this come true, there is part of the blood of Tipu Sultan, the vision of Sir Syed and thoughts of Allama Iqbal, untiring struggles of Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and endeavors of many other companions of M. A. Jinnah. And everyone was aligned to achieve a single goal – a free and independent Islamic State: Pakistan. 14 AUGUST 1947 was the auspicious day of Islamic history when Pakistan, the God-Gifted country came into being. The unity of Muslims and the dedication and heartiness of Quaid e Azam were the things that paved the way for the creation of this country. Hindus and Britishers deceitfully campaigned, created hindrances against the movement of Pakistan but Alhamdulillah Pakistan had to be done and It appeared on the map of the world. At that time, there was only one slogan of Enemies vigorously ridiculed the demand of Quaid e Azam for a separate free land, though the demand of Pakistan was based on right, reality and truth and right finally prevails. The reality, it couldn’t get acclaimed sooner or later, it is not a reality but if it does then that reality is a REALITY. And all filthy intentions of enemies went in vain before the reality of Pakistan and today Pakistan is known as one of the great nations in the world. My compatriots! We have to love Pakistan. We admire the founders and the dreamer and thinkers of Pakistan and we also pray for martyrs who lost their lives in the movement of Pakistan. Those who sacrificed their homes and families against British rulers. They didn’t care for their children and accepted the hardships of prisons. And finally when Muslims of South East Asia got the freedom, right prevailed and falsehood surrendered. And the chains of slavery collapsed! Nature has gifted Pakistan with every kind of wealth and blessings. We have an abundance of streams, rivers and lakes which are irrigating our lands. We have skillful, lusty and ambitious Pakistani youths. We have the best in the world Pakistani army and war strategists. Wheat, cotton, oil and rice, everything is grown in Pakistan which is exported as well. Pakistan has a rich depository of minerals such as salt, coal, kerosene oil, gypsum and zamarud stones. Research work is in progress and Insha Allah there will be a day when we will also be self-sufficient in oil as well. Pakistan is now taking part in international affairs and willing for friendship with its neighbors countries. Pakistan is seeking trading and cultural relationships with other countries. Special settlements are being considered with Islamic countries, and Pakistan is eager to build relationships with any country that is endeavoring for peace and prosperity. Pakistan believes in peace but still, it is our duty to hold enough strength for defending our motherland. By the grace of ALLAH, Pakistan is an atomic power today. May ALLAH make every Pakistani more loving to this country. AMEEN!
Top 5 Independence Day of Pakistan Speech No 2 in English
Independence is truly no lesser than a great blessing. You can freely feel a sense of independence and freedom while breathing in the fresh air. We all stand protected because of this independence. Dear Sir, before we move ahead to discuss what is to be done for tomorrow, it is mandatory to shed some light on the hard work, dedication, struggles, and endeavors of our forefathers in the great cause of Independence. The efforts of Quaid, the struggles of Iqbal, the preaching of Sir Syed, and the efforts of thousands of Muslim freedom fighters from all walks of life can never ever be ignored. One wonders how come in the old day’s such unity, disciplined efforts and dedication in the face of two giant forces, the British and Hindus, our true leaders could achieve and that all brought us to Pakistan. True it is, behind all of those sacrifices and struggles for unity and free land was the blessing of Almighty Allah. Today’s 14th August marks the 75th anniversary of our Independence. In the debilitating journey of 75 years we suffered many strokes, various conspiracies were hatched to undo the glorious event of 1947, here the governance was destabilized, our economy was strangulated. We were made politically paralyzed, socially isolated and every possible effort was made to make us comply with international dictations but we still survive. We have to identify and stand against all of those odds to make our country strong and superior. Dear sir, It is quite disheartening to state that our land is facing numerous challenges. Poverty, terrorism, unemployment, youth frustrations, resources mismanagement, and corruption are to name a few. The challenges are unending. So it should be our strategy. To our youth brothers and sisters sitting here, we have to work out against all of these challenges. Being guardians of freedom we are responsible for working for tomorrow. The hard tasks always require great sacrifices. We have to stand against all of those big problems being faced by our motherland. Dear sir, given the enormous degree of challenges ahead, the things we need are unity, discipline, and faith. We have to preserve and propagate national integration throughout every corner of our country. We have to stay disciplined in our efforts and struggles for the progress of our country. And the last thing that we need is to have firm faith in Almighty Allah. Surely, with all the and efforts given, we shall stand victorious. This day comes every year to remind us of our true status, identity, prestige, and power. Today merely chanting slogans don’t suffice for us. There lies a higher responsibility on our shoulders. We have to discharge our duties diligently in order to get rid of incessant crises and uncertainties. Let’s help our brothers, our sisters and help our countrymen selflessly. Let’s stand against, injustice, ignorance, anarchy, poverty, corruption, and unemployment. Let’s work, let’s unite, let’s turn into such a sublime and solid entity that should embitter and spoil every nefarious tactic of our faceless foes.

The value of freedom can only be gauged when you are in shackles. We have thousands of examples from around the world. From one end of the world to the other, the world is still full of all kinds of slavery and injustice. Dear Sir, As we all know, the reason for commemorating August 14. We stand here for the leaders who gave us this free land as a gift. We got this land after decades of tireless struggle. Freedom is the name of justice, freedom, equality, peace and tranquility. And this freedom is thankful that today we are in this holy land of Pakistan. There is a good price behind every blessing. This is the kind of freedom we are enjoying in Pakistan today. It has come with many sacrifices and decades of struggle. There is blood, labor, sacrifices and countless other things. It is an open secret that before independence we were slaves of the British in United India. Our rights and responsibilities were under unprecedented attack. Congratulations to the leaders whose efforts gave us a country like Pakistan. Iqbal’s efforts, the hard work of Quaid-e-Azam and countless other independent stars, have passed successfully and what we have today is fresh and free to breathe and live according to our principles, rules, cultures and values. History is a good lesson. It really reminds us of our true value, dignity and power. The history of the Muslim struggle under United India is a clear testimony to the fact that the struggle of the Muslims is the real desire of the Muslims for a real and independent state. That history of struggle and sacrifice teaches us how much our country, Pakistan, is valued. It reminds us of our true purpose and purpose behind building Pakistan as an independent state. August 14th comes to remind us of our invaluable and neglected promises and responsibilities. Today, as the true representatives of this land, a great responsibility is being placed on our heads. We are responsible for the development, progress, prosperity and peace of our nation. We have to stand on the point of unity, integrity, discipleship and faith, as our great leader said. Pakistan’s goal is to stay here forever. No one can undo it. Therefore, as a responsible future of my country, I am determined to work hard, be disciplined, loyal, sincere, truthful and obedient citizen of Pakistan. I will serve my countrymen with a sense of honor, dignity and pride.

14, August Essay in Pakistan All classes
August 14 is the day of our freedom and it means the day when we were liberated not only from our ruthless rulers but also from humiliation. That day we found our identity and our valves. Pakistan came into being in 1947 as an independent state. August 14 is the day when the efforts of our national heroes are appreciated and celebrated and the day when we get our name and honor. As Muslims, we have our values, traditions, and religion. We Muslims celebrate this day with complete satisfaction and the joy of being in a separate area where we enjoy the freedom to live in every way. Pakistan is a democratic parliamentary federal Islamic democratic state. Pakistan has four provinces, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The day is a national holiday in Pakistan and is celebrated across the country with flag-raising ceremonies, tributes to national heroes, and fireworks in the capital Islamabad. The President and the Prime Minister deliver speeches and in the speeches, the leaders highlight the achievements of the government, the goals set for the future, and bring "unity, faith and discipline" in the words of the Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam. Its people. The day begins with flag-raising ceremonies in the capital of Islamabad as well as in all major cities of Pakistan. March parades and guard ceremonies are exchanged at Quaid-e-Azam's mausoleum. The Pakistani people visit national monuments like Minar Pakistan on this national holiday which is fully lit up in remembrance of Pakistan's. independence from the British Empire. There are flag-raising ceremonies at the Wagah border, with everyone standing quietly and motionless in honor of the "national anthem," followed by a military parade with stars. The names of people like Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan are always written in golden words in the history of Pakistan. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, popularly known as Quaid-e-Azam, is the real founder of Pakistan. Allama Iqbal, with his passionate poetry, encouraged Muslims to think and make a name for themselves in the world. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan took the Muslim nation forward and built schools and colleges for the Muslims so that they could know how to meet the modern requirements of premature age. People sacrificed their lives for freedom because they could not freely follow Islam and perform their religious duties properly in the subcontinent. When they perform their religious duties, they are punished or harassed. It angered the Muslims but since they were a weak nation, they could do nothing. Pakistan came into being after many sacrifices. Many of our forefathers sacrificed their lives only for the freedom of their future generations, for the sake of a free land where all Muslims can perform their religious duties voluntarily and freely. As citizens of independent Pakistan, we must reflect on the values and principles that were in the minds and hearts of those who fought and sacrificed for our freedom. He took pictures inspired by the values that have been nurtured in the country for ages. We are now living as a free nation, enjoying all the beauties and charms of our homeland. As a free and self-reliant nation, we must serve our country to the best of our ability. We must work wholeheartedly and diligently for the development of our beloved homeland, we must not forget the sacrifices of our forefathers and national leaders who made this land an unlimited area for us to live in. Now is the time to work with the spirit that was in the blood of our national heroes who fought for our freedom. Now is the time to make a strong commitment to the betterment of our holy land. We must not compromise our integrity and allow our freedom and integrity to be used by other world powers. I On this free day, let us reconsider our plans, our actions, and their consequences. We should all pray for our holy land on this auspicious day and promise ourselves that we will not let it be harmed and will work to defend it till the day of our last breath. May Allah keep our holy land safe, may Allah keep our Pakistan safe! Amen. Happy Independence Day

Fund collection for Ram Temple in Ayodhya nets Rs 1,000 crore: Pejavar seer
Tumblr media
UDUPI: The nationwide fund collection drive launched by Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra (SRJTK), a trust set up by the union government for construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya has netted Rs 1000 crore as on date. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in coordination with the above Trust on January 15 had started off the massive one and a half month long donation drive and this thus far has yielded the above amount. Announcing this on Tuesday, Sri Vishwaprasanna Thirtha, seer of Pejavar Adhokshaja mutt, also a trustee of the SRJTK said, “I am extremely happy with response of the people in South India which I toured extensively in connection with the fund raiser.” People of all sections of society have contributed enthusiastically for this project, he said adding the fund raiser has been an important development in organising the entire Hindu community. Construction of a temple befitting the statue of Lord Ram at Ayodhya is not the only aim of the Trust, the seer said. “The final aim of the project is to go ahead and set up a Ram Rajya, an idealistic welfare state,” the seer said. According to the Ramayan, during the rule of Lord Rama, there was no poverty, pain, grief or discrimination. Mahatma Gandhi popularised the term in which ruler rules democratically for the happiness and prosperity of people. The seer also exhorted the government to notify areas abutting all temples in the state as a protected area. This will prevent vested interests from encroaching such land and pave the way for future peace. The seer also opined that agitation for caste based reservation is not correct. Reservation should be given on the basis of a person’s economic status. People from each community should raise their voice for the underprivileged in their caste. While farmers’ agitating for their rights is accepted principle, continuing the same in the face of an open invitation extended to them by the union government for a dialogue to resolve the issues is not correct, he said. The agitation is causing problems to others, he said. Casting aspersions on national sovereignty using the agitation is condemnable, he noted. The seer urged the government to rename the Kalsanka circle here after Sri Madhwacharya.

Pompeo brings anti-China roadshow to Indian Ocean islands | World News
Tumblr media
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday brought the Trump administration’s anti-China campaign to Indian Ocean islands considered particularly at risk for what American officials allege is Chinese exploitation.
Pompeo is visiting Sri Lanka and the Maldives to press the two countries to be on guard against potential predatory lending and investment by China. He was making the case less than a week before the American election in which President Donald Trump is seeking to paint his rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, as weak on China.
Even before Pompeo arrived in Sri Lanka, China had fired back at the U.S. message, accusing Washington of bullying smaller nations.
In Sri Lanka, the Maldives and then in Indonesia on Thursday, Pompeo plans to press each nation to push back against increasing Chinese assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific, which U.S. officials complain is highlighted by development and infrastructure projects that benefit China more than the presumed recipients.
Ahead of Pompeo’s arrival in Colombo, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka denounced his visit, accusing one of his top aides of making unacceptable threats against the country. In those comments, the top U.S. diplomat for South Asia, Dean Thompson, warned Sri Lanka of the dangers of allowing China to get a foothold on the island.
“We encourage Sri Lanka to review the options we offer for transparent and sustainable economic development in contrast to discriminatory and opaque practices,” he said. “We urge Sri Lanka to make difficult but necessary decisions to secure its economic independence for long-term prosperity, and we stand ready to partner with Sri Lanka for its economic development and growth.”
The Chinese Embassy said the comments were a blatant violation of diplomatic protocols and also chided the U.S. for organizing Pompeo’s 24-hour visit and imposing a major logistical burden on the country, which. like much of the rest of the world is in the midst of a spiraling surge in coronavirus cases.
“Does this approach truly prove your respect to the host country? Is it helpful to local epidemic prevention and control? Is it in the interests of the Sri Lankan people?” the embassy said in a statement.
The U.S.-China tug-of-war plays out against concerns that the Sri Lankan government is backsliding on democratic reforms. Last week, Parliament by a large majority approved a constitutional amendment concentrating powers under President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and reversing efforts a previous government had made to curb authoritarianism.
With the change, Rajapaksa will be able to hold ministries, as well as appoint and sack ministers. He will also be the appointing authority of the elections, public service, police, human rights, bribery or corruption investigation commissions.
Those commissions were perceived as independent with a constitutional council comprising of lawmakers from different political parties and civil personalities making the appointments. With the amendment, the constitutional council was abolished for a parliamentary council whose observations the president is not bound to implement.
Rajapaksa will also be able to dissolve Parliament after two years and six months, instead of six months before its five-year term ends. And, he was able to push through a clause that lifted a ban on dual citizens holding political office, a move that will pave the way for a sibling who is a U.S. citizen to enter Parliament, further strengthening his family’s hold on political power.
Currently, Rajapaksa’s older brother, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, is prime minister. Another older brother and three nephews are also lawmakers — three of them ministers.
Sri Lanka has been ruled under a powerful executive presidential system since 1978, but a reformist government in 2015 clipped much of the president’s powers and gave them over to Parliament and independent commissions, saying successive presidents had been more authoritarian.
Pompeo arrived in Sri Lanka late Tuesday from India, where he and Defense Secretary Mark Esper had stepped up the Trump administration’s anti-China message by playing on Indian suspicions about the Chinese to shore up a regional front against Beijing,
“The United States will stand with the people of India as they confront threats to their freedom and sovereignty.” Pompeo said, referring pointedly to ones posed by the Chinese Communist Party, ”Our leaders and our citizens see with increasing clarity that the CCP is no friend to democracy, the rule of law, transparency, nor to freedom of navigation — the foundation of a free and open and prosperous Indo-Pacific,” he said.
Just hours before the meetings in New Delhi began, the Trump administration notified Congress of plans for a $2.37 billion sale of Harpoon missile systems to Taiwan — the second major arms sale in two weeks to the democratic island that Beijing regards as a renegade province. China angrily reacted to the first sale by announcing sanctions on U.S. defense contractors.
