My Kids Think I’m the Cooler DM
Eddie x Reader
In which Lucas, Dustin, and Mike tell Eddie they can’t play in a spur of the moment Hellfire session because their first ever DM was back home from college.
(AN. Fem. Aligned use of the words “girl” and “lady” Pretty much self indulgent, I am a DM myself so having a who’s the better Dungeon Master fight seems fun; no warnings other than cursing)
Requests are open!
(Not my gif)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Sorry Eddie we can’t play tonight, it was too short notice.”
“Sinclair you are already on my shit list for missing the beginning of last week’s session because of your stupid laundry basket game.” Eddie slams his hands down on the lunch table, making all three of the freshmen jump.
“Seriously it won’t happen again, it’s just-“
Mike was quickly cut off by Dustin, the only one who knows he can diffuse the situation.
“It’s just that our old DM is coming into town and we only ever get to play this campaign like twice a year!”
“Is this that Byers kid you were telling me about?” Eddie seemed to be calming down more, he knows how hard planning outside sessions can be.
“Oh no, this is the person that taught Will everything he knows!” Mike responds, nudging Lucas to talk the former game master up.
“Yeah Chaos is totally awesome Eddie!” He paused before looking at Dustin, “I grant you this one pass, on account of I brought up the session today” The boys began to cheer before Eddie cut them off once again. “And, I will be making an appearance tonight to meet this so called ‘Chaos’.”
The boys didn’t exactly tell their old DM that Eddie was going to be there. They knew you’d be apprehensive to meeting him, even more so seeing you run your game. There have been times in the past where players, specifically male players, judged you for being a DM. So you weren’t too keen on letting people into your group. They knew you would say no if they had asked you if Eddie could watch so it was just better for them to ask forgiveness.
The time had finally come. You were back home in Hawkins for about a week due to spring break. It has been almost a year since your last session and you wanted to make it the best possible. Your parents had let you deck out the basement completely as your D&D room so there was full ambience. You took red, purple, and gold scarves and put them over lamps to create colored lighting, the foam setting was intricately built in the middle of your giant game table, and the snack table was covered with pizza, drinks, and any other snacks teens would die for. You were proud of the work you’ve done over the past few years, it was actually starting to look like an actual dungeon.
The sound of loud footsteps shakes you from your thoughts, you look over to the clock and it reads 7 o’clock. As if on cue, your three favorite dipshits come running down the stairs.
“Chaos!” Mike, Lucas, and Dustin nearly tackle you to the ground with a hug. “Holy shit you are all so big now!” It has been about a year in a half since you’ve seen them so it makes sense. You knew that Will had moved to California which was sad because you had taken him under your wing for so long. “I take you all got the letters I sent?” They all nod excitedly. “Great, now my intrepid heroes, go be seated and we will start momentarily.”
Just as you were about to sit down, you hear heavy footsteps coming down the stairs. You were just expecting it to be one of your parents but they were out for the night so it couldn’t possibly be them. The freshmen look at the door, knowing who it was but they looked terrified either way. You put a finger over your mouth as you grab a nearby prop sword. The basement door swings open and you swing the sword. A chorus of screams from everyone as your weapon makes contact with the intruder’s stomach. He doubles over, clutching his midsection. “Ow what the hell!” “Who the hell are you?!”
You’re still pointing your sword when Dustin steps between you and the curly haired guy. “Chaos, this is Eddie Munson, Eddie, this is (Y/n) (L/n) or Chaos.” Dustin turned to you, “he invited himself, I was just about to tell you then he came down the stairs. He’s our current DM, can you please lower your arm?” You put the sword back in its stone and sit down at the head of the table, behind your screen.
“If he must join us, he will keep his mouth shut and watch the session. Maybe he’ll learn a thing or two.” Eddie now realized why the freshmen weren’t as scared of him as people normally are, this lady was terrifying. Though he was immediately drawn into the session before it even started. He was intrigued. As soon as everyone takes their seats, you begin to tell your tale.
Many hours and pizzas later, the session came to a conclusion. The boys were all on the edge of their seats when you started setting up the story for the next session. They all started packing up their things when Eddie approached you.
“That was…incredible! I wasn’t expecting something like that from-“ “A girl?” You cut him off defensively, you thought you know what was coming. “No! I was going to say from someone so hot..I can see why they call you Chaos, that was awesome!” You relax a little, laughing over his sentiments. “I know I’m great, and now I haven’t seen you DM but I’m pretty sure that my kids think I’m a better DM.” “Oh we will have to see about that one. We have a session a few days from now, if you’re brave enough to show.” “I might take you up on that one. May the best DM win.” You smile sticking a hand out for Eddie to shake. “I will see you then, Lady Chaos. Have a good night.” He turns your hand over and brings it to his lips.
Dustin, Lucas, and Mike start snickering and making fun of you two before you both turn and glare at them. “Alright get out of my house.” They all run off, Eddie leaving last and sending you a wink before running up the stairs. Maybe visitors weren’t such a bad thing.
A phrase/sentence/excerpt that you especially like
A character you LOVE
Your favorite worldbuilding element
That fanfic you’ve been obsessed with for days
Above all, say something awesome about a writer’s WIP and let’s have some fun!
Other Questions
Does Fab Friday take place in a specific time zone?
Nope! That requires too much coordination from me :P So if it’s Friday in your neck of the woods, feel free to send in your goodies! :)
You never responded to my message. Did you delete it?
I never delete any messages! If I didn’t respond after Fab Friday is over, chances are I did not receive your message and tumblr probably ate it. You are ALWAYS welcome to DM me and double check if it came through though! :) Feel free to send your message again!
Do you accept NSFW content?
This is an all-ages event so if you could not share anything super explicit that would be great! However: if you don’t mind a private response, I am very happy to offer support that way! :) It just won’t be shared publicly.
Do you accept fanfiction/screenwriting/other forms of writing?
Any form of writing is welcome! :)
***
Feeling good feels weird (but good).
GOSH
I don’t even know where to start. In the immediate future! Tony is coming up on Friday and we’re getting people together to start playing D&D on Sunday and Sean is so cute when he’s in the DM zone and I feel really happy for and like proud of him because I think this is a goal he’s had for a long time and he did have a D&D group for, like, a year but that fizzled out/he hasn’t been able to go since he started working so it’s just really exciting for him to have goals for the campaign and for him to be in his element playing his characters and I mean having regular times set to see friends will be awesome for me too. And I start a new job on the 29th but I’ll still work date nights for one family and hopefully do the AM school run for the other so it’ll be nice to be able to keep up with them and hopefully ease the transition for my kids. But also working 40 hours a week when I have to pay my own taxes equals about what I make working 30-odd hours a week when my employers pay them for me so it’ll make a real difference having that extra money still coming in and plus I’ll get commission at work. So my brain is happy having a puzzle to solve: do I want to use my babysitting money to make extra payments to my loans so I’m back on track of paying them off early, or do I want to contribute that money to my various savings goals? What about for commission? What’s the total amount of all of my various goals and is getting *there* as quickly as possible going to be more or equally as satisfying as feeling like I’m breaking things into chunks and solving multiple problems at once? Like, do make extra payments to my car loan, say, whenever I get paid for babysitting but any commission goes to savings goals? Or everything “extra” goes to debt until it’s paid off and then that payment + extra goes to big savings goals? Or vice versa! Keep paying what I’m paying to debt and save every other little bit until I’ve reached my big goals and then get all gungho about not having to make payments anymore? Or heck, what about investing some or all of it and giving future me more money to work with? I don’t know! But it’s fun to be able to spin options around in my head!
And that isn’t even everything going on! Sean’s parents want us to come out for a weekend and the first one of August works the best for them before his siblings will be at school in Boston and at first we were like, “Yeah I don’t know with me starting a new job THAT WEEK Sean might have to plan to go by himself what if they want me to work that Saturday?” But they don’t! So I can go! And I really like Sean’s family and weekend trips with people who are, like, excited to see me (and knowing there’s probably good, swanky food planned and, you know, not having to pay for the plane tickets ourselves...) are just the best and I’m such a better version of myself for a nice weekend trip so I’m looking forward to that too. I’m not the best version of my self during, like, beach week I’ve found and I feel bad for that still. But whatever. It’ll just be good to start this whole new! phase of life with a good trip to ol Naperville and then come back and get back to learning my new office and community and being the friendly face at the front desk which I honestly kindof miss and I hope my residents and new coworkers like me and stuff.
And then eventually summer will end! And in the fall Sean is going to try and schedule some meetings to get reoriented to the path he’ll need to take to finish his degree and he’s hoping to be able to work three days a week during the semester so that he can schedule his classes for Tuesdays and Thursdays in the spring. We’re not really sure how much longer he’ll have in school so that’ll be interesting to see, but I think we’re pretty much planning on staying in one place until he finishes his B.A. at least. So that’s kindof nice, penciling in plans to maybe renew our lease again next summer which will mean a total of four years at least in this house. Which is I think the longest I’ve ever permanently lived in one place, though I guess that depends on what my parents’ house in Charlottesville counts as. And I want to grow a kitchen garden! I want to buy cedar planks and put together a raised bed and get some soil in there! I don’t even care if we don’t renew our lease next summer after all, I just think the backyard needs a chance like that!! But that might be another savings goal I have to configure before I go around buying lumber and stuff so maybe it’ll have to wait for late fall or spring after all. We’ll see. The point is that these last two years have been so nothingy which is probably what I needed after the Worst Year of My Life (Including That Time I Had Cancer) but it feels SO GOOD to feel like the shoots are starting to pop out of the soil and stretch out to the sun and where there’s shoots there will be buds and then flowers and fruit and I’m at a place of beginnings and endings and I’m happy to be here.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR SIGN MAKING SEASON
It is that time of year again, sign season! While the NWSL may not have started yet, the USWNT already has matches scheduled and we are planning to go to She Believes this year. When the G.O.A.T.S. go to a game that means signs. SO MANY SIGNS. I am going to go ahead and give you some pointers for sign making. This is Mo by the way.
When I make signs my main goal is to try to make a specific person smile. That person used to be Whitney Engen, I’m still bitter about that. Having said that, if I happen to get their attention and they come over to me after a game I will still squeal like a banshee and say OMG way too many times.
STEP ONE: Come up with an idea. I have a group DM called “Creative Crew” where I like to get inspiration and throw around ideas. For the most part I like signs that stand out from the crowd, are unique, and are sure to do their job, make the Gals smile. *on more than one occasion this step has invoved liquor*
STEP TWO: Chosing the right materials. This depends a lot on what you need for your idea, how much you want to spend, and if you have to travel with it.
Are you coming from far away? Do you have to fly to get where you are going? If the answer to this is yes, you might want to wait until you are in the game city to buy your supplies and make your poster. This also means that you might not find exactly what you are looking for.
Do you want to go with a foam board (the hard one) or do you want the paper ones? This has a lot to do with how much you want to spend and how long you will be holding it. If you get the paper one you need both hands to hold it or it folds over on you. However, you can roll up the paper ones for easier transportation and they are cheaper than the foam boards. Take into account what the weather will be like on Gameday. Windy? Raining? Then go for foam. The paper ones will not hold up well to either wind or rain.
You have decided what kind you want, now pick a color. Easier said than done.The Solo Trio and I spent a good hour in a Wal-Mart trying to find the perfect color for our four individual signs. Sometimes the sign requires a dark background, sometimes you need a neon color, sometimes you DO NOT need neon. Chose wisely because the color of your board influences the color of your painting materials.
What will you use to make the letters? Pens? Markers? Sharpies? Spray Paint? Regular Paint? Poster markers? Whatever you use, make sure that it is A) noticeable against the board (do not use navy blue on a black board no one will be able to see it) and B) waterproof, even if there is no rain forecast. The reason for this is sweat. I, a very sweaty person, have had one too many of my signs smudge because of my perspiration. Rest assured I have learned from my mistake.
STEP THREE: Stencils are your friend. I highly recommend them if you want nice lines and edges. We are all very high maintenance here so stencils are important to us. Unless you are Sophie and a freaking sign making wizard who laughs in the face of stencils.
*I like to stay away from glue and gluing things to my posters, but if your design calls for it, always go with rubber cement over regular glue.
STEP FOUR: Location, location, location Think about how far away your seats are from the field. The further away you are the bigger your letters have to be, so they can be seen by the Gals. This means that if you want your fave to see your sign you need to make sure it is legible from where they are likely to be. This is important. You want to keep your sign to ten words or less. The more words there are, the smaller the letters have to be, the less likely the players will be able to make them out. If you have doubts about legibility, hold up your sign and ask someone to stand far off and tell you if they can read it. Preferably someone who doesn’t know what you put on it so they will not be influenced.
Make sure to pick a legible font!!! You do not want cursive or very skinny letters as they do not look very good from a distance.
Be aware of your surroundings! Don’t be that person who is blocking an entire section for an entire half because of a sign. If the Gals are on the pitch it is likely they are not paying attention to the sign that Jane in seat 17 Row YY is holding up. Your best chance is when they are walking out on to the pitch for warm ups or during the half.
If you are near the aisle, know that there will be a lot of traffic and you will need to move your poster a lot. There is also a higher risk of getting something spilled on it. GO WATERPROOF OR GO HOME!!
STEP FIVE: Know the rules people.
*KEEP IT CLEAN* Make it appropriate!!! Stadium Security likes to read them so no inappropriate images or language.
**SMILE** There are cameras eveywhere! This is a great opportunity to get your sign seen by the Gals or even get it on TV!!!
***SIZE MATTERS*** Stadiums have rules. For the most part a stadium will not let in a sign that is over 4’ x 3’ so make sure to measure. You don’t want to work really hard on something that you will not be allowed to take into the game. (AO and official supporters groups seem to be the exception to this rule)
I have seen some super intricate and detailed signs out there, some with lights or glitter or detailed art work and while yes they do look freaking awesome I wouldn’t go for that. For the most part my signs are just for the games. I do not plan to keep them for later so I am not one of those people that adds lights to it or gets too fancy with it. I still have to fly to Houston and then take an 8 hour ride to get home. I don’t want to carry a big ass poster with me too. I did it once and it was so stressful. If you plan to keep it, then by all means go all out for it. I usually toss mine out right after the game.
Whatever you go with, make sure you are proud of it because you have to carry it around and people will want to read what it says.
Feel free to share with us some of the favorite signs you have made or seen for the Gals!
****All steps and tips can and should be used in any and all sign making occasion and should be shared far and wide.
