Susz's Halloween Recommendations Part 2: Books and Fics.
Books
Pet Sematary by Stephan King
Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, moved to Ludlow, Maine with their two young kids, Ellie and Gage, and their cat, Church. In the woods, near their home is a pet cemetery with a sign that was spelled sematary.
Notes: this book made me scared of my own cats for about two weeks. I really enjoyed it but that scene with the cat was very excessive.
Sadie by Courtney Summers
The book chronicles teenager Sadie Hunter’s quest to find the man who killed her sister. In alternating chapters, Sadie’s subsequent disappearance becomes the topic of West McCray’s podcast The Girls.
Notes: this audio book is so fantastic, especially the podcast elements! Trigger warnings for Sexual Assault and Child Abuse.
The Project by Courtney Summers
But dealing with her ex is the least of Hannah's concerns when a terrifying blood ritual interrupts the end-of-school-year bonfire.
Lo Denham is used to being on her own. After her parents died, Lo's sister, Bea, joined The Unity Project, leaving Lo in the care of their great aunt. Thanks to its extensive charitable work and community outreach, The Unity Project has won the hearts and minds of most in the Upstate New York region, but Lo knows there's more to the group than meets the eye.
Notes: a book about a journalist trying to learn more about the cult who took her sister from her. If you have siblings, this one hurts even more than if you don't. This has a frick ton of triggers, so please look into that before picking this up.
These Witches Don't Burn by Isabel Sterling
Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly By Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans.
Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly By Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans.
But dealing with her ex is the least of Hannah's concerns when a terrifying blood ritual interrupts the end-of-school-year bonfire.
Notes: a queer witch book with plenty of action and magic throughout! This book is so important to me and I'm currently reading the second and final book!
The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King
Long retired, Sherlock Holmes quietly pursues his study of honeybee behavior on the Sussex Downs. He never imagines he would encounter anyone whose intellect matched his own, much less an audacious teenage girl with a penchant for detection.
Notes: one of my mom's favorites and this is one of the best mysteries I've ever read!
The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman
On the edge of town a beast haunts the woods, trapped in the Gray, its bonds loosening…
Notes: this author has been involved in some not great things involving being anti semetic (I hope I spelled that right), so if you still want to read this, please don't do it in a way that financially supports her. That being said, I read it before that stuff came out, and I liken it to a queer Teen Wolf season 3 type story.
The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas
First there was the car accident—two girls gone after hitting a tree on a rainy night. Not long after, the murders happened. Those two girls were killed by the man next door. The police shot him, so no one will ever know why he did it. Monica’s sister was the last cheerleader to die. After her suicide, Sunnybrook High disbanded the cheer squad. No one wanted to be reminded of the girls they lost. ...
Notes: an amazing murder mystery and one that I highly recommend! A bit slow at times, but the fast scenes make up for it.
The Assassin Game by Kristy McKay
At Cate's isolated boarding school Killer is more than a game-it's an elite secret society. Members must avoid being "killed" during a series of thrilling pranks-and only the Game Master knows who the "killer" is. When Cate's finally invited to join The Guild of Assassins, she knows it's her ticket to finally feeling like she belongs.
Notes: this takes place on an small island near Wales and it's one of the most atmospheric books I've ever read! The first chapter is really nasty, but after that, it's so good!
Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen. M McMannis
Echo Ridge is small-town America. Ellery's never been there, but she's heard all about it. Her aunt went missing there at age seventeen. And only five years ago, a homecoming queen put the town on the map when she was killed. Now Ellery has to move there to live with a grandmother she barely knows.
Notes: this was like reading a CW show. That's all I can say about it.
The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi
Jared, Simon and Mallory, who finds a mysterious Field Guide hidden in the attic, written by their great-great-uncle Arthur Spiderwick, who studied Faeries — magical beings who hide themselves from Humans using a type of magic called glamour.
Notes: I can't say much about this because I barely remember it. But I remember it freaking the crap out of me.
Fics (all of these are MCU)
Pumpkins and Stitches and Monster Mash by @marvelous-writer
Notes: I told myself to pick one fic from one writer, but with Marvelous-Writer, I just couldn't do it. I'm not gonna give synopsis' for the fics, because you really just need to take my word for it and read them.
too sick for clowns by @hailing-stars
Notes: short and sweet. Hailing-Stars is an icon and everyone needs to follow her.
Vein Drain by @ciaconna on Ao3
Notes: absolutely fantastic and humorous.
Trick Or Treat (Or Traumatize) by @awesomesockes and @whumphoarder
Notes: I just freaking love this writing duo.
No doubts about it by @angels-creative
Notes: my queen, my bestie, and the fic she had to send me the link to cause I couldn't find it XD
And I think that's all for this year! Have a safe and happy Halloween everyone!

Scrapbook 2021 | Part I
For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!
It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
Normal font - Indifferent/Neutral Italicized font - Enjoyed bold font - Loved with an asterisk* - All time favorite (bracketed titles) - Re-watches/Re-reads strikethough - Disliked
Goals are: read 80 books, finish five video games, write more than 20 fics or something larger than 20k, and write either an original short story or start a novel.

He is going to find his father.
an act too often neglected by Ariaste | The Untamed | Lan Xichen/Meng Yao | 60k | The single faceless, anonymous photograph on the profile that catches his eye is shot in elegant black-and-white, and there’s something about the crispness of the focus and the markedly off-center composition that says art, for once, rather than mugshot. The caption below is equally sparse: “5’6. Demanding.”

Boat Basin by downjune | The Falcon and the Winter Soldier | 5k |  He thought the 21st century now maybe suffered from an overabundance of classifications for all the different ways to fuck and/or romance a person, but the most important thing—and his therapist had emphasized this—the most important thing was connection.
my touch magnifies by isozyme | Word of Honor | Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu/Ye Baiyi | 7k | Wen Kexing gets hit with fuck-or-die sex pollen on the way to Longyuan cabinet. Dogs or cats? CATS ALL THE WAY, BABY! 🐈🐈🐈🐈  I don’t hate dogs or anything, I just don’t really care for them. There is ONE (1) exception tho and it’s the best dog there is, and being a 100% cat lady, the only dog I would ever want to own and that’s the white swiss shepherd. big. fluffy. white. looks like a wuuuulf. 🐺 [just look at HIM, he majestic].
YouTube celebrities or normal celebrities? i try to avoid any celebrity exposure to preserve my last dying brain cell
If you could choose to live anywhere, where would it be? P R O V E N C E. in a tiny cozy house with a lavender garden. sipping wine dressed mildly slutty like in a renaissance painting. petting my 3+ cats. living my best life in the sunlight. 🍷☀️
Disney or Dreamworks? *shrug emoji*
Favorite childhood TV show? witch
The movie you’re looking forward to in 2020? the green knight has me all 👀👀👀
Favorite book you read in 2019? what are books and how do you read them (i was preoccupied by compulsory uni literature and i hated all of it :/)
Marvel or DC? i don’t know the difference between marvel and dc and at this point i’m too afraid to ask (no i’m not, i enjoy living in this state where i’m unaffected by things like end game)
If you chose Marvel, favorite member of the X-Men? myself
Night or day? i’m a certified sun thot, exposure to sunlight gives me serotonin, so day it is! ☀️☀️☀️☀️
Favorite Pokémon? rapidash. it’s a unicorn, okay 🦄🦄🦄 (also shout out to wooper and the ones that look like deer. and shiinotic. it’s a mushroom 😊)
Top 5 bands/artists? it’s impossible to rate them or come up with a definitive list, but right now it’s: des rocs, welshly arms, saint mesa, barns courtney, the phantoms (i live for blues rock, country and rock ‘n roll)
Top 10 books? literally anything from the discworld series by terry pratchett (namely witches abroad and reaper man) + the world without end by ken follett (it broke my heart but it was so good)
Top 4 movies? i’m more of a series gal, but: little women, the vvitch, down periscope, city of ember
US or Europe? europe has such a lush and intricate history (and CASTLE RUINS! we have CASTLE RUINS) that cannot be find in the us, yet the us’ utterly unique countriside gives me so many comfe vibes (and it has cowboys, yeehaw); i can’t really choose but i have this inner desire to travel through the entire us, it gives me strong feelings of wanderlust just thinking about it (and cowboys 🤠🤠🤠)
Tumblr or Twitter? tumblr, i have never ever used twitter in my life
Favorite vacation destination? PROVENCE (+ anywhere in france tbh), also us, oceania, spain (love me some warm sunlit countries!)
Favorite YouTuber? i don’t watch many english-speaking youtubers, but i love foil arms and hog (irish humor is unprecedented and i will die on this hill)
Favorite author? myself ✌️
Tea or coffee? T E A ☕☕☕ (especially black tea with lemon and honey, i drink that almost every day)
OTP? we do only oc x canon / oc x oc ships in this house (my main pairing is deborah x john seed; it’s fine tho, i only literally think about them every single minute of every single day) 💕
Do you play an instrument or sing? i used to play the concert flute but that was a while back; i sing a lot and have a soft, pleasant voice, but i have never tried it professionally so my technigue isn’t that good, i do it just for fun (went to a choir then found out we would only sing songs i hated so im singing at home, annoying everyone around me, but that’s not my problem)

10 Questions Tag
I got tagged by @sophielovesbooks, thanks for the follow!
Rules: answer ten questions, ask another ten, and tag ten people
1. Do you have a writing routine?
Not really, I just make a point to try and write something every day. It doesn’t have to be long, doesn’t have to be part of whatever story I’m working on, it doesn’t have to be good, it just has to exist. I have a notebook set aside for jotting down whatever random Idea comes to me throughout the day, you never know if it could be just what your story needs.
2. Music on or off?
Depends on what I’m writing, what kind of mood I’m in, and what I’m listening to. For more action-packed scenes, I’ll listen to stuff like Barns Courtney, Skillet, or Two Steps From Hell; for more dialogue-heavy scenes I might listen to classical music or ambient soundtracks (I reccommend tabletopaudio.com, if you’re interested). For romantic scenes, I’ll break out Adele, Alesso, or Boyce Avenue.
3. A genre you’d never touch?
I tend to have pretty eclectic taste, so that’s a tough one. I’m tired of dystopia and urban fantasy, to be honest. Sure it gave us stuff like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and The Hunger Games, but the genres have so saturated the mainstream audience that there hasn’t been as much variety the last few years, and I’m ready to see something else.
4. A piece of media that inspired you?
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett is my all-time favorite book. It and The Host by Stephanie Meyer feature protagonists that aren’t fighters in the physical sense, but have a gentle inner strength that allows them to endure anything and do anything with the skills they have. Wanda and Sara are my gold standard for strong characters, especially since I know people like them in my own life, and they are my heroes.
5. A writing rule you always follow?
Happy Endings are a requirement. It can be a bittersweet ending, like in the Hunger Games, but a happy ending is an absolute must. Happy Endings are subversive, and everyone deserves one. Your characters get put through one form of hell or another during the story, why should they tough it out if they aren’t rewarded for their struggle. Happy endings do exist, I’ve seen it firsthand. If your characters have earned happiness, let them have it.
6. A trope you hate?
The villain has a point/Every villain gets redeemed. I know I’m cheating, but the two have been used together enough times that it counts. When they’re well written, these tropes are fantastic, but they don’t need to be a requirement. Some of my favorite villains are the ones that are pure evil and are doing evil because they want to and it’s FUN. Ursula from the Little Mermaid, The White Witch from Narnia, the Joker. Complex villains are great when handled properly, but over-saturation leads to trope fatigue. I’m looking forward to a return of the classic Disney villains that are evil and own it.
7. Do you think characters have to suffer for a book to be good?
No, I don’t. Struggle isn’t the same as suffering. Struggle means to make strenuous effort in the face of difficulty or opposition, to proceed with difficulty and effort. To suffer means to submit to or be forced to endure. A book is about a character trying to accomplish a goal despite opposition of one form or another; they struggle towards a goal, but they don’t necessarily suffer for it. For example, in The Martian, Mark Watney struggles to survive on a deserted planet. Andy Weir focused more on the problem-solving, rather than the psychological trauma any other writer would’ve prioritized. The character does suffer, sure, but it’s the struggle that matters.
8. What is the aesthetic of your current WIP?
I’m sure there’s another name for it, but I’ve been calling it Necrobotany or Persephone. Poppies, bones bleached white, lily-of-the-valley, pomegranates, dead leaves on cobblestone, a weeping willow, black lace, wisteria, deadly nightshade, white chiffon, a wrought-iron gate, the singing of a monastery choir, ravens, a crown of thorns, a full moon shining on a lake, the ringing of a lone church bell, and leaves rustling in the wind.
9. Planner or pantser?
A bit of both; you should at least have an idea of where you’re going and what will happen next, but you shouldn’t be afraid to let different ideas in. You can have a really good idea, but sometimes things just don’t work out the way you expected; maybe someone suggests something better, or maybe you realize something you hadn’t thought of before. If you focus on just what you’d planned to do, you might miss some really great opportunities.
10. Do you write only original works, or also fanfiction?
Fanfiction is great writing practice, a way to enjoy the fandoms you’re a part of, and hives of creativity. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come across fan works that are as good if not better than the actual canon. If you have the energy to write, but have hit a roadblock on your original work, fanfiction can be an excellent way to keep your creative juices flowing without beating your head against writer’s block.
Some questions I’d ask:
1. What’s your favorite trope and why?
2. What’s your favorite romance from a story (book, movie, show, comic, etc.)?
3. What’s one character from a story that you DESPISE, and why?
4. Is there a bad trope you’ve seen done well (man in a dress, love triangles, etc.)?
5. Why do you like your favorite book (it can be a theme, a character, a quote, or a scene)?
6. Do you ask friends or family to read and review your WIP?
7. What’s one thing you think a retelling or remake did better than the original story (Disney’s live-action remakes, twisted fairy tales, etc.)?
8. What’s your favorite movie based on a book and why?
9. What’s one book or story you’d love to see get a good movie adaptation?
10. Which is more interesting to you, a ruthless hero or a benevolent villain?
I’m gonna tag @damngoodcookies @alsoaleteia @selfdestructivegirl13 @wordsnstuff @ancient-depressed-druid @jamesmarchioriblog @angrylamapirate @asiaredgrave @thecaffeinebookwarrior and @katsens-writing
You don’t have to, of course, but I’d love to see what you guys think.

Favorite song to sing/hum? I sing along to everythinggg even songs in other languages I just pretend like I know what the words are and how to pronounce them
Favorite tree /plant Willow tree
Favorite colors? Purple, Black
What do you always doodle? Stars, hearts, birds, and . . . swords, knives, blades NOT REALLY SURE WHY
How do you take your coffee/tea? Black black black. Unsweetened. No milk or cream. Occasionally I like some fun flavor in my coffee but I just appreciate black coffee so much. When I was a barista though, I looooooved making fun and fancy drinks for others!
Favorite candle scent? I really love citrusy scents, but then I also like candles that smell like spices and baked goods.
Sunrise or sunset? Sunset, however, if I’m driving, I prefer to drive just before sunrise rather than be on the road around sunset. It’s something about being out on the road before most everyone else is awake.
What perfume do you wear? I don’t. I spray Witch I Love Your Hair all over my hair and face though so I’m often smelling like lavender, peppermint, and rosemary essential oils. My girl Brigette makes this, here’s a link: https://www.witchiloveyourhair.com/
Favorite quote?  I have a bunch! But here’s a few:
“It’s better to rise than fade away.” - Courtney Love (This was my senior quote lol)  “You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.” from The Little Prince “Sex is the consolation you have when you can’t have love.” -  which I think is from One Hundred Years of Solitude Favorite self-care routine(s)? Play music, watch anime, cook myself a meal and pour a glass of wine. Wait, Justine, is this a self-care routine or just how I cope? They’re the same damn thing because I don’t take care of myself alskdj;laksdfj;sdkljsd
Fuzzy socks or house slippers? Both
What color are your eyes? Hazel
What’s your favorite eye color on others? Green, only because I would love to have green eyes lol. Otherwise, all eyes are beautiful
Favorite season? Why? Autumn. I know Spring feels like a “renewal” or  a “rebirth” to a lot of people but that’s what Autumn feels like to me.
Cheek, neck, or nose kisses? Neck kisses if you’re trying to turn me on. Cheek kisses if you just want to be cute.
Favorite breed of dog? I like goofy, shaggy, big ass dogs. Like a dog that’s gonna knock the wind out of me if it hits me with it’s tail. I don’t know any dog breed name really lol I own like ten cats leave me alone XD
Do you ever want to be married? If so, what colors would you pick for your wedding theme? No thank youuu I also don’t want to birth any children thanks
Cursive or print? I actually write in both, like I always write cursive lowercase z’s even when all the other letters are print. They’re just fun. My q’s are also always cursive.
Favorite weather? The Floridian is about to jump out of me but honestly lolol the weather right before we get hit with a hurricane is the best weather of all time!! I SWEAR. It’s literally the calm before the storm and it’s so peaceful and breezy and beautiful.
TAGGING: Ash tagged my go to mutual lol (aka my love @xshatielx) so I’m not really sure who to tag ? @lulidrafts @fenrirgodspeed @99-ma ?? If you don’t want to then ignore me :D

okay, so today was wild, as expected. my body decided to be an asshole and woke me up at 6 am and didn’t let me fall back asleep, so I didn't even get as much sleep as I wanted to, but once the alarm rang at 8 I actually started getting ready. I was doing the death witch cosplay today which is actually pretty simple, mainly just a tank top, jacket, jeans and boots, so it didn’t take me long to get ready. We headed out the door around 9 and made a stop at the local bagel place because I wanted Jess to have an authentic New York bagel, I got an egg sandwich on a roll because you have never had an egg sandwich before in your life if you have not had one from a LI deli or bagel place. But anyway, we got the food and got back on the road, the convention center is about an hour from my parent’s house, so not bad. We were able to find parking pretty easily, and didn’t have to wait very long to get in. Unfortunately it was very hot, and we were both wearing rather warm cosplays, so we had to deal with that. But we got into the actual room and headed over to Brandon’s table to see what was going on. He had a fairly long line and we didn’t see his handlers that Jess knows around so we got in line and waited. We talked to Brandon for a bit and then Jess and Brandon took several selfies, one of which I photobombed and it’s legit the funniest thing ever. After that we went to the show floor and just kind of milled about, I’m not really searching for anything in particular at the moment so it was mostly just observing. There was a t-shirt that said “Nelson and Murdock, attorneys at law” which I kinda wanted but i already have so many shirts....I’ll decide on it tomorrow. Brandon’s panel was at 1, so we grabbed some seats in the back during the previous panel (someone from the walking dead) and waited until that was over and people cleared out to jump to the front. The panel was really good, lots of good questions and answers, I asked what his favorite blooper was from the gagreel and he said he loved the one with him fighting the curtain and it failing and then Courtney is just laughing, as well as all the dance moves. Afterwards we milled about the floor for a while more before meeting up with two of Jess’ friends. Jess had a photo op at 3, so I went with her to that, then we reunited and went to Brandon’s table all together, then went through the floor with the friends where they discovered an “A.T.O.M.” shirt that obviously Brandon NEEDED to have, so that was purchased and we went back to his table and gave it to him, and it was pretty great. After we said goodbye to him for the day we headed out, going to the cheesecake factory where we were gonna get food even though it wasn’t all that late yet (I think it was like 4:30). But of course they still had a wait, but we only had to wait like 15 minutes so it was nothing. My stomach had been bugging me all day, no idea what’s going on with that, and I was trying to find something that I would be sure wouldn’t piss of my acid reflux, which was difficult on a menu with giant amounts of fried and other types of food I can’t eat. I ended up settling for what I normally get, the four cheese pasta, which I was somewhat concerned about because the tomato sauce can be acidic sometimes, but it was fine. We had a good time chatting and joking, it was a lot of fun. We got cheesecake of course, because all visits there have to end in cheesecake, it’s the law, but of course none of us actually finished the piece 😂 they do such a good job of filling you up with food. We sat and talked for a bit then said goodbye to friends and headed back home. Everything was pretty docile here, just my parents and my uncle, who we talked to for a bit before heading upstairs and hanging for a bit. The air mattress Jess slept on last night had a leak, meaning she woke up mostly on the ground, which is something I’m very familiar with as it happened legit all the time on tour when were were all sleeping on air mattresses for a month, so we had to have my dad fix it and hopefully it works now. And yeah, shortly after that we started getting ready for it and here we are. Tomorrow we’re going back to the con of course, I’m going to do my Ramona Flowers cosplay and hope 1) that my wig doesn't look terrible, and 2) that I don’t actually melt, because her outfit is legit just two layered jackets, but I’m going to try to manage them so I won’t be dying the whole time. Okay, it’s almost 1 am, I’m off to sleep. Goodnight ladies and gents. Hope you had a kick-ass Saturday.

Logic Games for Camp Counselors
Counselors love to use these logic games as a way to pass time and keep campers engaged and having fun during down time. All of these are mind games in which the rules are ‘hidden’ from the players, that is, until they figure it out! Make sure to instruct them not to yell out the rule once they figure it out (unless the game calls for that), so as not to ruin the game for others. Depending on the game, make sure that you let campers ‘run it,’ state the phrases, try the actions, etc. once they begin to figure it out so they don’t get bored. If no one is figuring it out, try telling a person or two to get the ball rolling. Have fun!!
STICKS
Sitting in a circle on the floor, grab a bunch of sticks or wood chips. Tell campers that you are going to do something with the sticks and they have to guess the number your are thinking of based on your actions. Make a picture with the sticks (a house, a number, a letter, a pile, etc.). The number you are guessing is revealed by how many fingers you are holding out once you complete your stick picture. I like to sit criss crossed apple sauce and then place my hands on my knees. If I hold out two fingers in each hand, the number is 4, or one hand with five fingers and the other with none is five, etc. Have campers guess the numbers and tell them if they are right or not. If you think they have figured it out, let them try being the one with the sticks.
MAGICAL UMBRELLA
Start by saying the riddle “um. I have a magical umbrella. It’s *insert color or pattern here* and when I spin it around it turns *insert different color or pattern here.* What color does it turn next?” The key is to say ummmmm before saying the riddle (magical UMMbrella) Have campers guess, and tell them if they are right or wrong. Then let them try ‘holding the umbrella.’ Play around with crazy patterns like purple with green dinosaurs on it, orange polka dots, etc.
GREEN GLASS DOOR
Campers try to guess what can or cannot go through the green glass doors. Say “I can bring puppies through the GGD but not dogs.” The key is that words with double letters can go through (kittens but not cats, apples but not oranges,  boots but not shoes, etc.)
FOUR IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
This game starts with a certain number that eventually breaks down into the number four. The goal is figure out how the numbers are being broken down. “twelve is six, six is three, three is five, five is four.” The next number is the # of letters in the previous number. The word twelve has six letters, six has three letters, three has five letters, five has four letters. Every beginning number eventually breaks down to the number four.
PICNIC
This is a simple game, but can be difficult to catch onto the rules. Can also be fun to play as a name game as you get to know each other and remember names. Start by saying “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing a *insert object that starts with the same first letter as your name*.” (Emma and eggs, Courtney and cookies, Samantha and sandwiches.) Have campers try this one and tell them whether or not they are able to bring the object the say until they figure it out.
THE ROSE
This game can be played many ways with different objects. Say “If I have a rose and I give it to Courtney and she gives it to Samantha and she gives it to Emma, who has the rose?” The person who has the rose is the first person to speak after you finish saying the question. So if you ask the question, and Courtney says “it’s _____,” then you could say “no it’s you Courtney.” This one can be a little slow at first until a few people pick up on it, but then it’s super fun! One of my favorites!
PAY ATTENTION (or LISTEN)
Say “Pay attention. If those (point to them) are shoes, and those are shoes, and those are shoes, are these shoes?” Point to a few pairs of shoes, and then for the last object, you can either point at shoes or anything else. The key is to say the phrase ‘pay attention’ before you speak. If you do, than the answer is yes, if not, the answer is no. So if you finish by pointing at a real pair of shoes, but you don't say ‘pay attention’, then they are not shoes. But if you point at a tree at the end and say ‘pay attention’, then the tree is shoes.
GHOST CHAIR
This one is a bit difficult. Set up chairs like musical chairs. Pick a chair to assign as the ghost chair, but don't tell anyone. Explain that there is a ghost in the room. Have everyone sit in a chair. Mentally note who is sitting in the ghost chair. Have everyone move to a new chair. Ask who the ghost is standing in front of. Let them guess, and tell them if they are correct or not. The ghost is standing in front of whoever was sitting in the ghost chair before you all moved chairs.
JOHNNY WHOOP
Hold your hand up. Make a specific pattern of touching your fingertips and sliding your finger along the curve between our forefinger and thumb. When touching the tips of fingers, say “Johnny,” but when sliding along the curve say “Whoop.” When you are done, drop your hands and clasp them together.  Remember the pattern you made, and do it the same way every time. Have campers try to copy you and tell them if they did it right or not. The key is not to correctly replicate your patten but to clasp your hands after finishing it.
RIGHT PARTY
Say “I’m throwing a party, but it’s not just any party, it’s the right party at the right place at the right time with the right people and the right snacks and the right clothes.” Then explain what you will be wearing to the party. Have campers try and tell them if they are allowed to wear it to your party or not. The clothes allowed to the party are whatever the person to your right is wearing.
ONE UP ONE DOWN
Only one of three phrases can be said. But only one of them is correct at a given time. Both up, one up one down, and both down. It depends on how your arms are positioned when the phrase is being said. So if the person’s arms are both hanging down, the correct phrase is both down, etc. Have campers try and guess which one to say and tell them if they are allowed to say it or not.
WITCH WRITING
You have to have at least one friend playing that knows the rule to get the ball rolling. Tell campers a story that explains how you met a witch and learned the secret language.Send the friend out of the room. Decide with the campers which word you are going to write and try to get the friend to guess. Call them back in. Use the secret witch writing to write the word and have the friend guess. She will get it right, keep playing until campers begin to figure it out. It involved random scribbling and pounding your hands against the table/ground. Vowels are represented by the number of pounds. 1 pound=A, 2 pounds=E, 3 pounds=I, 4 pounds=O, 5 pounds=U. Consonants are represented by the first letter of the phrase in-between pounds. The random scribbling is just to confuse people and has no meaning. Example: the word is ‘guide”. Say “Going to start now” Random scribbling with a pencil. Then pound your hands 5 times.  Random scribbling. Pound your hands 3 times. Random scribbling. Then say “Don’t get confused.” Random scribbling. Then pound your hands 2 more times.
CROSSED/UNCROSSED (or OPEN/CLOSED)
This game can be played with sticks or pencils (scissors for open/closed). Have everyone sit in a circle. You are going to pass two sticks to the next person either crossed over each other or just parallel to one another. The person receiving them has to say if they are receiving the sticks crossed or uncrossed. The position of the sticks does not matter, only wether the giver is sitting with their legs/ankles/arms (pick one) are crossed or not. This game works better when siting on the ground than at a table.
MAN IN THE MOON
Grab a stick and draw a picture in the dirt while saying “This is a man on the moon. He has a face, a mouth, a nose and two eyes.” (Draw those things) Before doing/saying this, do a small action such as touching your ear, flipping your hair, scratching your knee, etc. Have campers try and tell them if their man on the moon is correct. The drawing does not matter, only that they repeat the same small action beforehand.
PLATES/CUPS Grab a few cups or plates and a small object that fits underneath it. You need a friend who knows the rule to get the game started. Decide on a code word with the same number of letters as the number of cups you have. (if you have four cups, use the word corn, which has four letters) Share this word with everyone, but don’t explain how to use it. Lay the cups out in a horizontal line. Only the friend will understand at first but the plate to the far left (the friend’s point of view) corresponds to the first letter of the code word, so C. The next cup is O. The next is R. The next is N. Again, the campers do not know this. Send the campers and the friend away or have them close their eyes. Put the small object under one of the cups. Call them back. The friend will guess which cup it is under. She will know because the cup it is under corresponds to the first letter of the first thing you say when they come back. So if the first thing you say is “Really think about it, and tell me which cup,” then the object is under the cup that is R, or the third cup.
PSYCHIATRIST
This game is fun, but once the participant figures out the rule, the game is over because they have to say it out loud. That is.... until someone new wanders up and wants to play and doesn’t know the rule. Pick a participant and send them away. Explain the rule to everyone else. The person is going to come back and ask them questions. The first person to be asked  a question is to answer with the words “i don’t know” no matter what the question is. After that, the next person to be asked a question is to answer with the answer that corresponds to the last question. Call the person back into the group. Explain to them that they are a psychiatrist and this group has a problem and they have to figure out what it is. They are to go up to people and ask them simple or yes or no questions. When they think they know the problem, guess it out loud. Example: Psychiatrist to person A: Is the sky Blue? Person A: I don’t know. (this will confuse the psychiatrist, tell them to move on to next person) Psychiatrist to person B: What color is a cow? Person B: yes. Psychiatrist to person C: What is  my name? Person C: black and white. and so on.
ROAD TRIP
This one is difficult and takes a while to figure out. You are going on road trip and going to tell your campers where you went and how long you stayed there and they are to figure out where you are going next. The answer is revealed by the pathway of your trip. Letters are the first letter of where you went. Vowels are how long you stayed. (A-1, E-2, I-3, O-4, U-5) Example: I started in Delaware and stayed for 2 days, then I went to Nebraska, then Vermont where I stayed for 2 weeks, then I went to Rhode Island. Where do I go next? Answer= Denver.
BLACK MAGIC
One person is sent away. The rest of the group decides on an object among them to be the magic object (a hat, shoe, shirt, backpack, water bottle, etc.) Call the person back. Explain to the person they are to pick an item from a list you give them that is the magic object. They are to figure out that the object is whichever one comes after a black object. The other objects can not be black, because that would disrupt the game. Continue to list off a bunch of items among you, pointing at each, one of them being the object chosen after a different black object. Example: “Is the magical object her shoe, his sunglasses, my foot, his hat (which is black), that water bottle, or the sky?” Answer= the water bottle because it came after the black object.
HOW MANY BEARS?
Make up a story about bears, and finish by asking how many bears there are (have it make sense with the story). The answer is dependent on how many words are used to ask the question. Ex: How many bears are there?-5, What number of bears are there?-6, How many bears?-3, etc.
THIS CAN HAS FIVE SIDES
This game follows the same rules as the bear game. Grab a can and pass it around, having campers tell each other how many sides it has. The number of sides is dependent on the statement. Example: This can has five sides-5, Two sides-2, I think that this can has 8 sides-8, etc.
DOES THE BOAT FLOAT?
This game is similar to the umbrella game. Here’s how it works. Say “Okay,” then grab a stick or use your finger to draw an imaginary boat in the air. Ask “Does this boat float?” Let campers guess yes or no and tell them if they are correct or not. The key is wether or not you say ‘okay’ before you draw the boat. Let them try drawing boats once they think they have figured it out.
WHOSE TRIANGLE?
This game is almost identical to the boat float game, but draw a triangle between different people as your stand around in a circle. You can also play this game like the rose game, where whoever speaks first is the owner of the triangle.
FLASHLIGHT DANCE Again, similar to the boat float game. Pick a phrase or acton (saying okay, clearing your throat, flipping the flashlight in the air and catching it, etc.) that must be performed before the dance. Grab a flashlight (this game is obviously for night time) and perform (or don’t) the action and then proceed to do a dance with the flashlight. Ask the campers if your dance was real (performed the action) or made up (did not perform the action).

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #145 - ParaNorman
Tumblr media
Spoilers below.
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: Yes.
Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: Yes. #176.
Format: Blu-ray
1) It is with this film that Laika proves they were more than just a one hit wonder, that they could make a great film more than just once with Coraline. I’m glad they did, because now we’ve got four great films from the studio.
2) Whereas Coraline was Stephen King-esque in being atmospheric and creepy (almost German Expressionist), ParaNorman establishes that this is a different kind of macabre film. More the fun horror that marked the zombie movies of the 70s than the atmospheric haunts of Coraline. That is not to knock the film or even say it is better than Coraline, but instead to observe that they are different. This is mostly clearly established by the film within the film which opens ParaNorman, definitely made in the style of those old crummy 70s horror films.
Tumblr media
3) Norman.
Tumblr media
Just like with Coraline, Laika is able to craft a child protagonist who is - above all else - an honest representation of what is’ like to be an eleven year old kid. Norman doesn’t make any effort to hide the fact that he sees dead people and he faces ridicule for that everyday. Except he’s eleven! Eleven year olds are taught to not lie to adults, so why would Norman lie?
But more than that, Norman is a great representation of the “weird” kid. The kid who likes horror and old monster movies, the kid who exists EVERYWHERE in the world but doesn’t often see themselves represented in media (something which feeds their status as “weird”). Like most of these kids, Norman is largely kind but tries to keep to himself. It’s easier that way. Less people to make him feel like a freak. He knows how hard it is that no one listens to him, which makes his superpower being able to communicate to those who are often not heard (aka: dead people). But more on that later.
Norman is just a wonderful character and Kodi Smit-Mcphee does an excellent job as Norman’s voice actor. Like the writing, he is able to portray Norman honestly. No Breakfast Club-y “oh woe is me” stuff, just a quiet frustration from not being listened, from being written off as a freak time and time again. Smit-Mcphee is great in the part and I think Norman is better off by having the actor’s voice.
4) Norman’s family life is INCREDIBLY frustrating to me, but that’s the entire point. Both his dad and his sister are kinda jerks just because Norman’s weird. What’s so wrong with being a little weird? As long as you’re not hurting people. But again, it is a source of great conflict for the film.
5) Norman’s walk through town is uniquely imaginative, showing these ghosts not in a frightening but instead a fun and unique way. They each have their own character we understand in just a few seconds after meeting them. A great way to introduce us to his world.
Tumblr media
6) Alvin just makes me…sad.
Tumblr media
The total loser asshole who thinks he’s hot shit when really he’s just a moronic bully with an inflated ego of himself. The very existence of bullies like this makes me feel sad about their existence. (I don’t like bullies, can you tell?). Also how much of a tough guy are you if you’re named Alvin? Not to diss anyone with the name Alvin, but it’s not your typical bully name. That may just be the point though, as Christopher Mintz-Plasse (best known as McLovin in Superbad) is not your typically bully voice. In most of his early films, he was the character getting bullied.
Tumblr media
7) I always appreciate creative ways of introducing necessary backstory to a film. This movie using the crummy school play to explain the Blithe Hollow witch and her curse is a nice, seamless, and entertaining way of letting us know information which is going to become VERY relevant later on.
8) Ah, Neil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @kpfun)
Neil is great. Another honest representation of a kid. In this case a kid who isn’t really bothered but the jerks. He knows who he is, he’s fine with who he is, and he’s not going to let anyone feel bad about it. He’s also IMMEDIATELY nice to Norman and throughout the film he is consistently loyal to him, always listening to what his friend is saying. He also just accepts the fact that Norman can see ghosts, without question and without judgment. I really like Neil. I think we all need to be a bit more like Neil.
9) Uncle Prenderghast.
Tumblr media
John Goodman has a brief but memorable role as Norman’s Uncle Prenderghast, who can also see ghosts. HE is able to play Prenderghast’s sense of crazy quite well, coming off as wonderfully unkempt AND giving us our best earliest flavor for the film’s sense of humor.
[Uncle Prenderghast dies, his spirit starts to leave his body, then the spirit comes back to his body and he sits up.]
Uncle Prenderghast [laughing with glee]: “No! Not yet! Not ye-”
[Uncle Prederghast dies and becomes a ghost.]
Uncle Prenderghast: “Oh nuts.”
10) THIS. FREAKING. SCENE.
Norman [after causing a scene at the school]: “I didn’t ask to be born this way.”
Perry [Norman’s Dad]: “Funny. Neither did we.”
Sandra [Norman’s Mom, to Norman]: “You know, sometimes people say things that seem mean but they do it because they’re afraid.”
Norman: “He’s my dad. He’s not supposed to be afraid of me.”
Sandra: “He’s not afraid of you. He’s afraid FOR you.”
I have so many emotions here. After Perry’s snide comment I’m truly angry, but then when Norman makes the observation about fear I get sad and then after Sandra’s line about why Perry is afraid I stay sad but like a different kind of sad if that makes sense. It’s just, I love everything about that exchange.
11) I will say, this film I think is funnier than Coraline.
Uncle Prenderghast’s Ghost [asking Norman to keep the witch’s curse at bay]: “SWEAR!”
Norman [after hesitation]: “You mean…like the f-word?”
Tumblr media
12) This film gives us two great meta jokes back to back.
[Norman’s phone rings and it’s the Halloween theme]
Text Message: “Come to the window.”
[Norman goes to the window and jumps at what he sees.]
Tumblr media
Neil: “You wanna play some hockey?”
It knows the genre it’s playing in and does it wonderfully.
13) This line sort of breaks my heart.
Norman [after telling Neil about the witch’s curse]: “Go home Neil. I’m better off on my own anyway.”
Norman is used to people not listening to him and holding him back because of it. He really doesn’t feel like he has anyone to count on, so he’s not used to Neil’s support and instinctively sends him away. That’s a really lonely life.
14) There are certain quotes in films we should all try to live our lives by. This is one of them:
Grandma: “There’s nothing wrong with being scared, Norman. So long as you don’t let it change who you are.”
The brief moments we see between Norman and his grandma provide a nice, interesting relationship. I sort of wish there were more of them but I also appreciate how the film flows as is, so I’m glad we got the peek we did.
15) This film does a good job at being scary when it wants to be. The scene when Norman is snooping around his dead uncle’s home looking for the book he was told about actually had me jumping a little bit. I love that.
16) I just want to take a minute to appreciate how this scene is visually.

The horror fantasy of this world just erupted in a no-holds-bar way and that is made very clear to us as the audience in an effective way.
17) I love Anna Kendrick in anything, even if it’s just her voice.
Tumblr media
Norman’s sister Courtney is a wonderful kind of awful. She’s the bratty older sister who doesn’t really care about her brother at the start, he’s just an embarrassment. But as the film goes on you can see that the two are siblings and that they will stand by each other. But while Courtney is being more antagonistic we are given some strong comedy and character and Kendrick’s voice just works wonderfully in the part.
18) Neil’s brother, Mitch.
Tumblr media
Mitch is a really fun character. He’s sort of your atypical dumb jock type but we get to see more of that. We get to see how he’s not the worst older brother, how he’s less of an outright jerk to Norman and more just an insensitive dunce, and he has some of the best comedy moments in the film. Mitch’s voice actor, Casey Affleck (who I will only be discussing in the context of this film, not the controversy which surrounds him because this really isn’t the best place for me to talk about that) uses his wispier voice to add a juxtaposition between Mitch’s body and his mind, being able to convey his warmth/humor/thickness in a unique and entertaining way.
19) Once the entire ensemble comes together, there is some wonderful comedy.
Alvin [after the zombies trap him and Norman]: “Are they going to eat our brains?”
Norman: “I think you’ll be safe.”
Just a heads up: out of the next seven notes, about six of them deal with how strong the comedy in this film is. You have been warned.
20) The zombies trapping Norman and Alvin in dead Uncle Prenderghast’s house actually creates some nice scary moments, while still keeping the humor and heart this film has established so far. Working well in the genre it has established to create tension and stakes while also providing us with some good laughs.
21) There is some really strong slapstick comedy with the zombies in this film, let me just say.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

22) I told you the next few notes are me going to be commenting on how strong the comedy in this film is.
Courtney [to/about Norman]: “I just knew something like this was gonna happen tonight?”
Mitch [sincerely]: “You did? Wow! Because that zombie bit really threw me.”
23) This is quite possibly my favorite joke in the whole film.
Neil [to Mitch]: “You’re the oldest.”
Mitch: “Not mentally!”
Tumblr media
24) Okay, I swear the next note after this will be more than just a comment on how funny something in this film is. But come on, the vending machine scene…
youtube
25) The message of this film ends up being incredibly surprising and compelling. The fact that the zombies are NOT the monsters in this situation, but the people just start attacking the zombies because they’re different. That the people are the ones who’s arms break through the walls of city hall like it’s Night of the Living Dead. That the living human beings who act based on fear and bias are more dangerous than the living dead. I think that’s a really strong message that the film works quite well with, elevating it above just your standard genre film.
26) Okay, this is the last note on a joke for a while I swear. But, come on…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

27) This is one of a few scenes which breaks my heart:
Courtney: “I’m scared Norman and I can’t listen to this anymore.”
Tumblr media
(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)
The most frustrating part of the existence of the average kid is that no one listens to them. That they are written off or talked down to even when they’re right and/or dealing with some massive situation. “They’re just a kid,” is a common phrase to diminish the actions or feelings of a child. And that SUCKS. It sucks being consistently not being heard, being consistently written off. The reason so many kids feel like no one understands them is because so few people TRY to understand kids. We forget how hard it was being a kid because why would we want to remember that pain? That frustration? Being an adult is hard enough, it’s easier to think that being a kid was easy. But it’s not. And kids everywhere constantly wonder what they’re doing wrong that their life isn’t as easy as how adults remember being a child is. And it just sucks.
28) Honestly, this is the scariest part of the movie for me:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @maggins)
The big bad witch, the one the entire town’s tourist industry is based on, the one who’s death has become pop culture for them inspiring casinos and school plays celebrating her death, that witch…was a seven year old girl who was executed because she was different. Because adults were afraid of her and acted badly out of it. And the scariest thing is: it’s not that far from the truth. Look at Salem. Look at somethings today. People hurting innocents just because they don’t understand them. Just because they’re different. History is marked by putting people - including children - to death because they were misunderstood. The scariest part, the most heartbreaking part, about the reveal that the witch is a seven year old girl is that it’s the least fictional part of this movie.
29) For how much of an awful sister Courtney can be in the first half of the film, remember this: she stands with Norman fist. It’s her brother standing in front of an angry mob defending a bunch of zombies and she doesn’t even really hesitate (only enough to process what’s going on) before she stands with her brother and shouts the adults down before anyone else. Before Neil, before Mitch, before Alvin. Courtney is there for her little brother. And because of her everyone else follows suit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIFs originally posted by @the-light-of-animation)
And then she encourages Norman! She helps him! Albeit with a very Courtney speech, but still she supports him!
Courtney: “I have cheered the uncheerable Norman. I’m not letting you give up now.”
30) Okay, so I’m not done commenting on how funny some of the jokes are in this film.
[Norman, Courtney, and the zombie are in the backseat of their parents car]
Courtney: "Ugh, Norman! He’s on my side of the seat.”
Norman: “She wants you to move over.”
[Zombie groans at Courtney.]
Courtney: “Um, I heard that! Mom, stop the zombie to stop saying stuff about me!”
Norman: “Will you quite using the z-word?”
Courtney [mocking]: “Will you quite using the z-word?”
Perry: “So help me I will stop this car right now if all three of you don’t quite it this instant!”
31) Okay, the entire Norman/Agatha climactic scene.
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @ikejamese)
This line of, “I don’t want to go to sleep and you can’t make me,” as a whisper in Norman’s ear in nothing but silence is a great way of establishing how straight up scary Agatha can be.
I love this electric design of Agatha.
Agatha has always been stopped in the past by someone reading a bedtime story to here, and Norman KNOWS this isn’t changing anything it’s just delaying it. So he uses the format of a bedtime story “Once upon a time…” to relate to Agatha and what she’s been going through in a way which frightens her. Because that’s something she’s buried away. She doesn’t want to be afraid, she wants other people to fear her. And it really shows how Norman’s superpower is communicating because he is able to do what no one else has: he is able to actually talk to Agatha.
The visuals for this scene are just incredible. Not only with Agatha, but with the void and the fighting and…gah! It’s delightful eye candy.
And then when Agatha goes back to being Agatha, this scare little girl who was hurt worse than any seven year old ever should, my heart breaks.
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @laikaworld)
And in the continuing trend of this scene breaking my heart:
Aggie: “I just want my mommy.”
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @marshmallow-the-vampire-slayer)
32) I think it’s really powerful that, once the curse is lifted and the zombies just go back to being ghosts, they don’t smile. They’re not at peace. They still have to exist with that guilt and the fact they murdered an innocent girl because she was different than them. They don’t deserve a smile. I love that.
33) THIS! FREAKING! SCENE!!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)
I believe Mitch is the first openly gay character in a mainstream animated film. In an interview with EUR Web, co-director Chris Bulter said:
It was part of the tolerance thing. It seemed important that we be brave about it. If we’re saying to anyone that watches this movie don’t judge other people, then we’ve got to have the strength of our convictions.
I love that.
34) With this film, Laika starts a tradition of including a fun “behind the scenes” post-credits clip showing how they make some of their film. It shows just how much they care about their work and I love that we got similar bits in The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings. It’s basically the featurette below, just watch from nine seconds to a minute and nine seconds.
youtube
ParaNorman is a great film. It has an incredibly strong message of tolerance and making sure you don’t let your fear change you, the animation is exquisite, there is just so much humor and heart, there are some truly wonderfully frightening moments, the voice acting is incredible, and it is just an amazing ride through and through. Go see it if you haven’t watched it yet. Seriously.

Galactica, part 234
In this Bianca meet Courtney’s new friends, Shane does what he does best, Tatianna is in the spotlight, Allison tries a new craft and Fame has a bad day.
Thank you @veronicasanders @toriibelledarling and @samrull <3
“Okay, so, I just want you to be natural, be yourselves, this is just some like, filler footage for the package to introduce you guys,” Jane explained.
“Yeah, got it. Is that the strongest light you have?” Bianca asked. “I want the good Ramona light. The instant facelift light.”
Jane rolled her eyes and walked back to video village. “I’ll see what we can do.”
“Come on, Jane, don’t fuck me here! I’m standing next to a celestial being. Human perfection. Give me a damn light.”
Courtney burst out laughing. “Flattery will get you nowhere, Bianca.”
“That’s a lie. You’re a whore for compliments. Flattery will get me everywhere.”
“Oh yeah. Right.” Courtney winked at her.
“Heyyy! Thaaat’s a fucking light!” Bianca exclaimed, as a two guys rolled on a monster light into the kitchen, pointing it at the counter. “Jane, you’re amazing! I’m telling Andy to give you a raise.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Are you guys ready or what?”
“Roll it, Jane.”
Jane signalled the cameras crew to start rolling and then Courtney, who skipped around the corner into the kitchen in her running shorts.
“Good morning!” she sang, slipping her arms around Bianca from behind.
Bianca turned around from the coffee maker, kissing her. “Hi…”
Courtney pulled her against the counter, hands buried in her hair, lips parted, the kiss turning into something else altogether. “Told you…” Bianca breathed into her ear as Courtney giggled airily and arched against her, wrapping a leg around her waist.
“Guys!” Jane called out. “This is basic cable, not pay per view. Dial it back!”
Bianca looked up, slightly dazed. “Sorry Jane. She’s a bit of an exhibitionist.”
Giggling, Courtney pulled herself away slightly, giving her a more chaste kiss, as Vanity entered in full, glamourous drag, every sequin perfectly in place.
“Helloooooo,” Vanity crooned.
“Hey,” Bianca looked up, confused, pouring herself a mug of coffee. “Damn, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you before noon. Are you like...still up from last night?”
Vanity scoffed. “Don’t be silly, darling! I had a full night of beauty sleep...obviously.” She fluttered her lashes.
Courtney laughed, hopping up onto the counter and grabbing a nectarine from the fruit bowl. “Yeah, we can tell. You’re gorgeous.”
“Aw, thanks, sis. I’m glad you think so, because I’m tagging along with you today to Atlantic City.”
“Alright...you gonna help sell merch?” Courtney teased.
“I would be offended by that except that yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing. Latrice said that sometimes the people the venue assigns don’t know how to sell and if I move more than usual, I can get a commission.”
“Sounds fair to me.” Courtney high-fived her.
Bianca narrowed her eyes, hands resting on Courtney’s thighs. “What kind of commission, exactly?”
Courtney kissed her cheek. “B, don’t worry. I’m sure Latrice made a good deal.”
“You’re way too trusting.”
“He’s my /brother./ It’s not all about money.” Courtney shook her head.
“Thank you, Courtney.” Vanity stuck her tongue out at Bianca.
Bianca sighed. “I mean, sure. I have freeloading relatives, too.”
Courtney leaned forward and kissed her again. “Don’t be such a spoilsport.”
Sliding her hands up Courtney’s legs, Bianca deepened the kiss, fingers creeping inside the hem of her shorts.
“Ugh, are you really fingering my sister on the kitchen counter?” asked Vanity.
Bianca held up her middle finger. “You wanna stay in a hotel, bitch?”
“Guys! Cable!” called Jane. “Keep your hands outside the shorts, Bianca!”
Courtney giggled, wrapping her arms around Bianca’s neck. “We’re not safe for cable, B.”
“They can blur it out.”
Jane threw up her hands. “Mother fucker…”

Shane: What’s a vampire’s favorite fruit?
Betty: oh my god
Shane: No, you have to guess
Betty: I’m trying to work here
Shane: Looking at fabric swatches online isn’t work
Betty: excuse me, have you ever been a designer? didn’t think so
Shane: WHAT’S A VAMPIRE’S FAVORITE FRUIT
Betty: … a blood orange?
Shane: a NECKtarine
Shane: Betty
Shane: Betty
Shane: Admit that was funny
Betty: I hate you
Shane: <3
Betty could hear Shane’s silly little giggle all the way from his desk, so she looked away from her computer screen to give him an eyeroll, but her face decided to deceive her and she smiled instead. Everybody in the department seemed to be buried in their work or at least pretending to be, just like Betty was doing since morning. Trixie could be seen through the glass doors of his office, leafing through sketches with a pencil in his mouth while Ivan was peacefully napping in his crib.
Betty could use a peaceful nap as well. Or something else… maybe something that could wake her up, better than two coffees she already had.
Betty: truth be told I’m bored as hell. how much time left to lunch? wanna go hang out in the warehouse?
Shane: If by “hang out” you mean what you usually mean by “hang out”, no. Did you forget Fame had cameras installed last week?
Betty: fuck, I forgot
Betty: what is the deal with her lately?
Shane: No idea. We can go hang out in the Marketing bathroom though?
Betty exited Messenger as fast as she could and got up from her chair, heading for the door and gesturing for Shane to follow. They weren’t even out of the department yet when she felt his hand grabbing hers, Shane pressing a kiss to Betty’s temple as she closed the door behind them.
The corridor was empty, like the whole of Galactica has fallen into winter’s sleep.
“Hey babe, what do you call a huge pile of kittens?”
“Oh no. Not these again.”
“A MEOWntain,” replied Shane, his lean body vibrating with giggles and joy which only made Betty pull him faster towards the elevator.
“You’re the actual worst. Remind me why I married you?”
“Because you love me? Because I put up with all your moods and encourage everything that’s good in you? Because you require my constant support and relish in my bubbly personality, bad puns and whatnot? Or because -”
“Okay, okay, shut up. You win this round.”
“Woo! What do I have to do to win the next one?” They were in the elevator now, riding up to Marketing, Betty not really sure why she was holding so tight onto Shane’s shirt and trying to fit herself to the shape of his chest.
“Make me come in 15 minutes?”
“Oh girl. That’s it? Challenge accepted.”

Tatianna jumped out of the makeup chair, finally finished, popping a piece of gum into her mouth, and wandered over to chat with Naomi, whom she hadn’t seen for what seemed like weeks.
“Omigod, girl, you look stunning!” Tati smiled brightly. She knew she should probably be mad at Naomi, knew that the river of bad blood between Elite and Model Management had gotten just that little bit wider when Naomi jumped manager, but she couldn’t be mad. Not when it had helped her own career, and Naomi was so fun to be around. “Seriously, you’re gorgeous.”
“Thanks, you too!”
“We have to get a selfie!” Tati pulled out her phone and the two girls began snapchatting, pulling faces, cracking each other up. Naomi couldn’t keep her mouth shut as usual, the girl gushing about her glamorous life and the new apartment she had gotten on the Upper East Side. Tatianna didn’t say as much, but she got all the dirt on Naomi’s commercial shoot in Hawaii, the shoot sounding absolutely magical.
Tatianna looked up from their selfie session, her and Naomi dressed in the bunny filter when she heard Violet walk over to the two of them, holding an enormous gold gown, so big it practically engulfed her slender frame.
“Violet! Oh my gosh, how are you carrying that all by yourself?!” Tati exclaimed.
“I’m pretty strong.” Violet smiled, a teasing tone in her voice, and moved the gown a little so her face was free, the woman gesturing for Tatianna to come near her. Tatianna stood up, beyond grateful that Violet wasn’t acting as awkward as she had at the gym, even though she wouldn’t complain if her manager’s girlfriend wanted to throw more Dior cosmetics at her.
Naomi looked Violet up and down with some serious side-eye, her arms crossed, her eyes almost rolling. “Damn. That’s a big fuckin’ dress. Is Glinda the Good Witch going to be joining us?” Naomi's voice was snarky, her nose crinkling slightly, but Violet didn’t give her the time of day.
Violet ignored Naomi, instead speaking directly to Tatianna. The day was going to be stressful enough, between the mountain of work with the gowns and the pressure that she felt from Fame of putting on a happy face about the dreadful creative that had been decided for the shoot, and then Sutan as well? Violet smiled pleasantly, already deciding that she wasn’t going to engage with the angry model that kept asking for her attention. Violet could barely recognise her from the last Galactica runway, but she had honestly not  - she did not need to engage with this little brat. “Tati, this is going to be your first look. I have to sew you into it, so I hope you’ve been to the bathroom.”
“You’re sewing me again?”
“I’m sorry… I had to prioritize and since I know you can stand still… So, please?”
Tatianna smiled. “Sure thing!” She pulled off her robe and gestured to her bra. “Bra on or off?”
Violet felt a blush creeping into her cheeks. “Um…Off… You have to take it off. There’s a corset built into the dress…” Violet averted her eyes as Tati whipped off her bra and tossed it onto a chair with the robe, stepping into the gown that Violet held open for her, lifting her arms. Tatianna was so pretty, her skin looking like a caramel dessert. Her breasts the perfect size, her long hair glossy and wavy and smelling slightly of... was that mango?
“Are you blushing, Violet?” Naomi asked.
Violet visibly tensed up, beginning to sew the side of Tatianna’s gown closed, focused on her needle and thread.
“Hey, Naomi, is that Bianca calling you over the the other wardrobe rack?” Tatianna asked.
“She is?! Oh shit, thanks!” Naomi jumped up and raced over to the other side of the tent.
“Thank god,” Violet muttered.
Tatianna grinned. “She wasn’t really, I just thought maybe she was distracting you from your work.”
Violet smiled gratefully. “Well...thanks.”
“No prob. So like...this is becoming our regular thing, huh? I’m not sure if you know, but they make these amazing new contraptions called zippers.”
Violet chuckled. “Yeah, well, when you have to make 6 gowns in 3 weeks…”
“Jesus. When do you sleep?”
“I don’t.”
Tati smiled. She noticed that Violet’s face looked unusually serious, lines creasing her forehead. “What’s wrong?”
“You’re smaller than your measurements.”
“I am? That’s amazing, I’m gunning to do swimsuits in Miami, I still need about 4 pou-”
“No!” Violet threw her hand over her mouth, mortified.
“No?”
“It’s just.. No, no, forget I said anything, I’m sorry.” Violet tried to busy herself with the needle and thread again.
“No, Violet, seriously, what do you mean?”
“It’s just… You’re not made to be that slim... You’re not... You’re beautiful Tatianna. Just as you are.
“I...thanks.” Tati bit her lip and Violet looked down, the girls pale cheeks bright red.
*
April handed Naomi a shimmering gold mini-skirt and jeweled top. Nina shook her head. “I don’t know about that combination. Can we try the sweater instead? We don’t want it to get slutty.”
“Oh, of course!” April quickly switched the tops. “Do you think this top will work with the pants?”
Nina nodded. “/Much/ better. The first combo looked like something Bianca would have put her underage girlfriend in.”
“What did you say?” Bianca called from where she was talking to Tracy and Allison.
“Nothing, boss!” Nina chirped, giving her a thumbs-up.
Naomi and April both giggled, nodding when Nina made a “zipping your lips” gesture.
*
Violet stood to the side, trying not to wring her hands while the photographers took their test shots. One of the models had nearly stepped on the heavily beaded skirt of her gown and every time it happened, Violet almost had a heart attack.
She tried to keep her breathing even, but when the girl did it for the 27th time, Violet, unable to stop herself, rushed forward to fix the skirt, stammering out an apology to Tracy, admonishing the model in a low voice. “If you step on this dress, there are going to be 10,000 beads rolling down Fifth Avenue!”
The girl cringed, eyed wide. “Oh shit, sorry. I didn’t realize it was that delicate. It’s so beautiful.”
“Well...yeah.” Violet calmed down a little at her attitude, and even more when Tati put a reassuring hand on her shoulder while she straightened the skirt. “Just, um, try to be careful. I’ll be here to help if you need me.”
“Thanks.”
“Don’t worry, Violet, we’re not looking to destroy any couture!” Tracy called, grinning.
“Thank you.” Violet smiled tightly, wondering why, if that were really the case, there were crew members prepping a /hot dog cart/ down the block, and more still setting up lights at the playground? She shuddered, thinking about how horribly tacky it was all going to be.
*
Nina stood next to Bianca, watching as they changed set-ups. “I see you hired another one of your exes. I thought you were taking a step in the right direction with this diversity initiative, and then another step back…” she clucked her tongue.
Bianca rolled her eyes. “First of all, Allison is not my EX, okay, she’s someone we’ve been employing as a model for years, and she’s a talented photographer who needs experience. She can learn a lot from Tracy. Who is black. In case you haven’t noticed.”
“I noticed.”
“And awesome.”
“Agreed.” Nina pursed her lips.
“And we’re meeting with Linda about the fellowship program on Tuesday. So chill out.”
“Wait...Tuesday? Isn’t that when you normally attend your Klan rallies?”
“I mean, yeah, but I only go there to pick up hot Aryan chicks, and I’m in a relationship now, so...my schedule’s open.”
They exchanged a knowing look.
After a beat, Bianca grinned, dimples deep. “Nice to have to back on the team, Garcia.”
*
“Violet! Come here… Check out the photos!” Allison smiled widely. She and Tati were standing at the one of the monitors, where Allison was quietly giving Tatianna tips while everyone was wrapping for their location move. “If you arch your back a little more here, the negative space would be great...see?”
“Oh, okay! Got it.”
Violet, who had been sipping on a cup of tea, stepped up to the monitor, her stomach a giant knot. She wanted to throw her hands over her eyes, and peek between her fingers, but unfortunately she was an adult, and she couldn’t.
Violet looked at the screen, and it felt like a punch to her stomach. Tracy’s photos were beautiful. Violet had been so worried, her style and her gowns really not made for the harsh urban feel of the street, but here they were, looking amazing. The rich, luxurious fabric against the rough bricks, and the simple plastic and the metal in the playground made them shine, like beacons of beauty amongst the everyday mess of New York.
“Oh Allison… Oh Allison...” Violet reached out, the woman dragging Allison into a hug, the two girls holding each other. “Thank you… Thank you so much… It’s beautiful.”
Allison smiled at the younger girl, not fully understanding the depth of Violet’s relief, but certainly happy that she was happy. She had had a soft spot for the shy brunette ever since Raven had introduced them, and her affection had grown with time, though she remained an enigma. Violet was weird, but she was pretty okay after all.
***
The last sequence of shots, at the Sky Terrace of the Hudson hotel, was where the real “money” shots took place, and it was absolutely breathtaking. City lights sparkled below, extras were brought in to give the place a real lounge vibe, and the girls looked gorgeous - the epitome of youthful glamour. It seemed like exactly what Nina wanted all along, which was confirmed when she breezed over to April and Violet with two glasses of champagne.
“Ladies…” she said, handing one to each of them, “Thank you so much for your hard work on this project. It’s come together very beautifully. And Violet, I know we were tough with you, but you really delivered - every note we gave was addressed, and even caught some things we didn’t see. Your work is quite impressive. Miss Fame should be proud of you both.”
“See, Garcia?” Bianca added, slinging an arm around her shoulders. “Sometimes nepotism works out for the best.”
Violet bristled a little, that nagging little worry about Fame’s “favor” rearing it’s ugly head.
“Don’t push your luck,” Nina said, tossing Bianca a good-natured eye roll.
Bianca laughed. “Well, this was my creative vision all along, so thanks for helping manifest it. To talent.” She clinked glasses with them and then got called over by the Creative Director, leaving them with a wink and a flash of her signature dimples.
“You’re welcome...your highness,” Nina replied, rolling her eyes harder as Bianca walked away, causing April and Violet to both giggle conspiratorially. “To the real talent,” she said, toasting them again.
Violet clinked glasses, filled with pride and happiness, realizing after seeing a full day of it that their little bickering was just the way they worked, and maybe even a necessary part of their creative process. She looked back over at the models, who were set up for the final shot, on the dance floor, movement and lights and a sparkling sky behind them, alive with energy and possibility. Her heart burst with pride, thinking that these were the moments when the drudgery, the all-nighters, the physical pain of it all, this is what made it worth it.
***
On Monday morning, Violet stood in the wardrobe room, checking in the pieces from the Marie Claire shoot, making sure it was all catalogued in the system, and in perfect condition. She hadn’t had the energy on Saturday when she’d dropped everything off at the crack of dawn. She also didn’t want to dump it in Ivy’s lap the way people often did.
She perked up a little when she heard Miss Fame’s voice on the other side of the door. Violet had indirectly been avoiding her since their unfortunate meeting, where she’d inadvertently set her off into a blinding rage, but now, given how beautifully everything had turned out, she was actually looking forward to the chance to report back in. Violet quickly finished what she was doing, gathering herself and smoothing out her skirt, ready to talk to her boss.
If there was one thing Fame loved hearing more than anything in the world, it was that she was right. Violet now knew that her instincts about the creative had been wrong, everything somehow coming together in the end. Talking to Fame, admitting she was wrong, wasn’t exactly something she was thrilled to do, but Violet felt like she owed it to Fame. She was the boss after all. The last thing she wanted was to be perceived as ungrateful for an opportunity.
Fame limped into the wardrobe closet, ranting to herself about the poor quality these days, one of her shoes in her hands, complete with a broken heel.
“Good morning, miss - oh! What happened?”
“What does it look like?” Fame snapped. “The heel broke off my damn shoe. Ugh, what a disastrous morning…” Fame kept walking forward to the shoe section, searching for a replacement pair, still limping slightly.
Violet knew it was Roxy’s job, and that getting near a seething Fame could be a dangerous move, but she still went towards her, quickly and silently pulling down pairs that looked similar to the ones Fame held in her hands and placing them on the table within her reach.
“Thank you.”
Violet nodded in response, silently thankful for Fame’s admission of a good mood since her help had been acknowledged. Fame sighed and tried on the first pair, examining her look in the mirrors, Violet biting her lip before she picked up her courage and opened her mouth.
“The Marie Claire shoot went well.”
“And Bianca was pleased?”
“Yes.” Violet nodded. “Nina too.”
“Good.”
“And I...I..” Violet knew Fame preferred short sentences, quick information and proper answers, but she had to say something. “I want to apologize for what I said, about the creative… It was out of line, and..I was wrong, and I’m sorry. I was wrong to question them.”
Fame turned to her slowly, eyes narrowed. “Well. I’m delighted that you realized that, Violet. It certainly shows maturity to recognize and admit a mistake.”
Violet felt slightly taken aback by her sharp tone. Fame usually never snapped like that when someone was agreeing with her. Had she done something wrong? Violet bit her lip, Fame’s eyes almost burning as she watched her. “I… I hope you can forget what I said about not wanting my name on it...” Violet said with a hopeful smile. She was honestly happy about the shoot, and proud of the work she had done for Galactica. That she had delivered a piece of work that had lived up to the clients, and hopefully to Fame’s expectations. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity...”
Fame smiled back icily. “Here’s the thing, dear. I’m glad you came to this conclusion. I really am. But I already told Bianca to give the credit to Galactica. So, chalk this one up to a learning experience, and maybe next time, you’ll think twice before acting like a petulant, spoiled child.”
She turned on her heel and sailed out of the room, slamming the door to the closet behind her. Violet was staring, the slam still ringing in her ears, her chest tight. Fame had never been that vicious to her before, and Violet felt like throwing up.

2019 Reading List
One of my favorite things since rediscovering reading for fun as a form of self-care is reflecting on the books I’ve read over the course of a year. In 2018, I read 69 books because I have the sense of humor of a 15-year-old boy. This year, I set a goal of 70 books (one more than last year) and was pleasantly surprised to have surpassed it. I think the majority of the surprise stems from the fact that I read some really bad books at the beginning of the year and got stuck in a rut. But then a few good books came along and reminded me that reading can help clear my mind and allows me to see the problems plaguing my lab work from a different perspective. I’m also incredibly proud because this year marks the first year that I have chosen to read so many non-fiction novels.
If last year was twenty-gay-teen (based on my reading list), this year continued in much the same vein. The general unifying theme for most of the books that I read this year is the intersectional nature of our identity. While lot of the books I read (unintentionally) mainly centered around explorations of cultural, gender, and/or sexual identity, many also included the intersection of mental health (directly or indirectly). The books I read this year challenged my perception of how others view their identities while also prompting me to reflect on my own identity and how I fit into the context of our larger society. I wish many of these books had been published when I was younger because they would’ve helped me feel less alone and given me a sense of community. Despite this, I’m glad I have had the opportunity to read these books now because they have prompted and supported enormous personal growth. I can’t wait to see what is in store for reading in 2020!

November has been what feels like both the longest and shortest month of my year. This month was even more filled with school assignments- four research papers due the first week in December- and related things. I fortunately had some really fun experiences with my friends and family this month. I plan on doing a If We Were Having Coffee: The Fall Semester edition in December, filling you on some in real-life happenings of mine over these past few months- and some very exciting things planned for the new year!
Returning to bookish and fangirl things, I’ve so far read 5 books this month while still completing Schitt’s Creek. Given how crazy school life was in November, I’m both content with the amount of books that I read and wish that I had read more. With my winter break approaching, I’m really excited to have more time to unwind and dedicate to reading and blogging next month.
All-American Muslim Girlby Nadine Jolie Courtney | 4.5-/5 Stars
All-American Muslim Girlwas my surprise favorite and a new contemporary favorite for me this month. It took me some time to settle in, but I absolutely adored the character development and emphasis on family and faith.
When the Stars Lead to You by Ronni Davis | 3/5
When the Stars Lead to Youwas unfortunately my most disappointing read of the month. While I appreciated that it handled some heavy issues, I wasn’t a fan of its execution.
The Toll (Arc of a Scythe #3)by Neal Shusterman | 5/5
I am here to admit that I definitely neglected those four school research projects for a few hours at a time this month to dive into the 625 page beast that was Neal Shusterman’s The Toll. And it was worth it!
Renegades by Marissa Meyer | 5/5
I officially cannot believe that it took me over two years to pick up Marissa Meyer’s Renegades because I loved it so much!
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren | 4/5
I finally read The Unhoneymooners! This was such a fun and flirty read and would make for the perfect one-sitting read over your holiday break.
Schist’s Creek S2-S5 (PopTV/Netflix) – Schitt’s Creek was  the best kind of stress relief this month. I’ve completely fallen in love with this show, and while I’m sad that I’m all caught up, I cannot wait to dive into its final season come January.
Let It Snow (Netflix)- The third weekend in November officially marked the start of my Christmas-celebrating this year, starting with the Netflix of adaptation of Let It Snow, Although there was a number of changes from the book (it’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I had it next to me while watching), I thought this was a really cute Christmas movie and brought the book’s spirit to life. I’m so excited that Netflix is acquiring more and more YA titles!
Holiday in the Wild (Netflix)- After an especially long week, I collapsed into bed one Thursday night and unwinded in the best way possible: with a Christmas movie! My inner Leslie Knope had to watch this Christmas movie starring Rob Lowe aka Chris Trager and Kristin Davis. Holiday in the Wild is definitely the cheesiest Christmas movie I’ve watched this far, but I still really enjoyed its humor and atmosphere.
Last Christmas– It’s been such a long time that I’ve seen a Christmas film in the movie theater, so add in Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding and I was sold on Last Christmas. Last Christmaswas definitely one step up form a Hallmark Christmas movie, but I enjoyed its lightheartedness and cast.
Encore! (Disney+)- While, yes, I had time to watch four seasons of a TV show this month and read a 625 page book, I haven’t dived into Disney+ too much yet. However, one show that I’ve been hooked on each week is Encore!. With a touch of reality TV show, I do appreciate its somewhat seriousness, as high school alumni reunite to recreate the musicals they put on as students.
Noelle (Disney+)- I’ve unfortunately been spending some of my Thanksgiving break working on final papers, but I distressed after a long Monday of paper writing by watching Noelle. While it was a tiny bit more fluffy than I was expecting, I still loved the cast and there were plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

Since I’ll be talking about some IRL stuff in my If We Were Having Coffee post next month, I’m just going to be focusing on some bookish and fangirl happenings that caught my attention.
Taylor Swift at the AMAs- If there was one reason that I had to watch the American Music Awards this year, it was Taylor Swift’s Artist of the Decade performance. I absolutely loved how she started the performance with “The Man” and I loved all the songs that she chose. I am also obsessed with the “Lover” First Dance remix. I’m really hoping that she will announce more Lover Fest tour dates soon.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Updates- Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be returning to NBC for its seventh season with an hour-long episode on February 7th. Even though S6 wasn’t my absolute favorite season, I’m still so excited to be diving back into this show that gives me some Parks and Rec feels. It was also announced that B99 was renewed for an eighth season– which I think calls for another Lin-Manuel Miranda guest appearance!
The Elementae series on hold– A.C. Gaughen replied to a reader on Twitter that there are currently no plans for books 3 and 4 to be published in her Elementae series. I’m so especially bummed over this news because I love Reign the Earth and Imprison the Sky so much.
Unfortunately, currently there are no plans to publish books three and four in the series. 😞 Im so sorry for readers left in the lurch, but the series hasn’t gotten the traction it needed to survive. 😩😩😩 https://t.co/earzn0fqwr

2017 is over and I’ve got 17 books I loved this year. I’m going to lump any series I read together. Below is my complete list of top 17 books. It was really hard to pick a top 17 honestly and I struggled with it. I read 121 books in 2017 and a lot of them were very good (3-5) star reads.  My goodreads overview is here.
1. Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab – this was my first finish it series and I can’t believe I waited so long to read them. The best series I’ve read recently and such an adventure to take in.
2.  Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is easily one of the best books I read this year. I still can’t believe how good it was. I really can’t wait for Felicity’s book to come out and to reread this one.
3. Three Dark Crowns and One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake.  So this series took me by surprise. I knew my friends had liked it and I was excited to read them, but they really wowed me and I’m PUMPED for the next book. I’m even reading The Young Queens Novella because I can’t get enough of this universe.
Tumblr media
4. The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner was the surprise of the year. I didn’t think I would love this book. Hell I didn’t think I was that in until that last portion of it. I was BLOWN away. I’m ready to dive into the rest of the series in 2018.
5. The Girl of Fire and Thorns and The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson was another surprise for me. This series has it all so far and I can’t wait to read book 3 sooner than later.
6. Scandal and Scoundrel series by Sarah MacLean was a series I got to wrap up in 2017 and left me very happy. I enjoyed how these books mirrored modern day gossip magazines and managed to deliver in so many ways.
Tumblr media
7. Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire was another one my friends recommended and I put off. Finally got a copy from the library and WOW. I love the concept of children who have come out of alternate worlds and how they deal when they return. I just picked up the second one and it may be my first read of 2018.
8. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin was a book I had never heard of until this year. I’m not sure how I missed it, but this book was a thrill ride of all kinds. I will be reading the next two books and the Noah Shaw book in 2018.
Tumblr media
9. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon is quite possibly one of the sweetest books I read this year. It really captures the age of the characters and takes you back. I do think that there are still some problematic things in the book (slut because of bisexuality), but overall it’s still a really great read. I’m excited for the next one by Sandhya Menon.
Tumblr media
10. Geekerella by Ashley Poston is a love letter to fandom put into a cinderella shaped package. This book ranks high on my favorites for contemporaries I read this year. This book for me felt like curling up with my favorite things fandom and fairy tales.
Tumblr media
11. Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones is the book I didn’t know I wanted. I didn’t realize I was wanting a Goblin King story until I read this. I’m beyond excited for book two in this duology and have more time with these characters.
12. The Wrath and the Dawn Series by Renee Ahdieh was the first series I finished in 2017. I really love Renee’s writing and find myself quickly transported into another world. The character development and plot was delightful. Also I met Renee at Y’all fest and she was amazing!
Tumblr media
13. Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova was a book club read and let me tell you. I did not expect the twists or the turns. I love the struggle Alex faces at becoming a bruja and the culture we get to experience as a reader with this one. I can’t recommend it enough.
Tumblr media
14. Hamilton’s Battalion by Courtney Milan, Alyssa Cole and Rose Lerner was the I didn’t even know this was happening for me this year. I devoured the trio of novellas. I loved every minute of it and it’s easily the best Hamilton related thing I’ve read.
Tumblr media
  15. The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton is most beautiful book I read this year. I was left feeling full of a lot of emotions (eww) after this one. It’s really one of those magical realism books I think people should try even if it’s not their thing.
Tumblr media
16. Grace and the Fever by Zan Romanoff is everything a former boy band lover would like to read. It’s delightful and heartbreaking. It’s about growing up and learning that things are what you always think they are. It’s about fandom and how the fans create expectations for these music groups.
Tumblr media
17. The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco felt like a big prequel but I was still left excited for book two to come out in 2018. I think if you go in with that knowledge and the knowledge it isn’t a middle grade book (which I’m not sure where I got that idea) it’s a great read.
Top 17 in 2017 2017 is over and I've got 17 books I loved this year. I'm going to lump any series I read together.
