mini fic for btvs 1x01 Welcome to the Hellmouth/1x02 The Harvest

It wasn’t meant to be like this.
She couldn’t afford this kind of thought at the moment, couldn’t afford the distraction, but—it wasn’t meant to be like this.
She was meant to go to school, struggle a bit to catch up with her classes, make friends—or had she made friends already? In which case, make sure they stayed her friends, and wasn’t that a challenge and a half, with how things were going—anyway, make friends and go out and maybe see if she could join the cheerleaders or something soon, once she’d found her footing. Do the normal stuff, live the normal life, live the not-constantly-on-high-alert life. But no, it was her second day of school and already she’d received barely-veiled threats from her new principal, not-at-all-veiled hints about accepting the whole Slayer thing from the new “librarian”, lost one potential new friend, almost lost another, been grounded, consequently sneaked out of the house, gotten two of her maybe-new-friends-but-at-this-point-why-would-they-stick-around people and the librarian into danger with her, and, and… was she forgetting anything?
Oh yeah. Buffy straightened her stance and raised her hands, determined to give her opponent all she got. I’m also already fighting vampires under some dusty mausoleum. Go, me.
At least the Watcher-librarian had only himself to blame if he got himself killed. Why would anyone choose that job?
She just hoped he and the others could get everyone to safety. There were already too many discarded bodies strewn about—people she was meant to save, why had she dawdled so much—and she wasn’t keen on anyone adding to the numbers. Nor on joining them herself.
Squashing down the fear, she met the Vessel’s attack with her own. No way was she going to die before she’d even tried for the cheerleading team.

It wasn’t meant to be like this.
Willow knew how these things worked, how new girls arrived at Sunnydale High. What happened was, at best, they glanced at her and decided she was no threat nor of any other interest, and proceeded to ignore her. At worst, or maybe just worse because she was currently learning rapidly that her definitions of good, bad, worse, worst may be outdated, they decided she made an easy victim, unless they thought they’d better keep her on the back burner for study help.
She’d sort of expected Buffy to go with that option. Well, at first she’d assumed it would be the worse/worst one. Buffy had that, that look. That look that Willow sometimes yearned for but knew, deep down, would never be able to achieve, nor truly be comfortable with if she miraculously did achieve it. The Popular Girl look of one who knew how to do her hair and clothes to look her best, who would compete for prom queen and have a realistic chance at winning without any Carrie shenanigans happening. That, plus the fact that she’d been hanging out with Cordelia right away, hadn’t boded well in Willow’s mind.
Then Buffy had sought her out, and been nice, and mentioned studying, and Willow had been able to relax, because she didn’t need to be actual friends with the pretty new girl. Just studying and getting half-hearted attempts at pretending friendship would be fine.
Except, now that didn’t seem to be happening either, and Willow had no idea where she stood. Buffy had clearly not stayed in Cordelia’s good graces for long, and had instead decided to hang out with Willow and Xander in the library, and…
And of course also revealed the existence of vampires. And demons. And hell? Was that meant to be capital-H Hell, or just… something hell-ish and so might as well call it hell? Willow was so not willing to start researching Satan or anything like that. Bad enough that crucifixes were suddenly a relevant factor in her life and survival.
Anyway. The pretty, meant-to-be-popular new girl wasn’t meant to be revealing secrets to and hanging out with Willow. Also, those secrets weren’t meant to be things like “vampires exist and I fight them and Jesse has joined their ranks”, but she hadn’t really had time to process all that, and it was easier to just get hung up on the fact that Buffy seemed to be interested in her acquaintance.
Maybe it was just for the studying. Or because she’d had no choice but to involve Willow, and Xander for that matter, because things had just happened that way.
Or maybe it was something she should really think about once this whole situation was over, and she could be sure any of them would even be alive by the end of it.

stray willow 1x07 thoughts
it's hard when you finally have the time and energy to write meta and all the meta has already been written. anyway please check out the what the force podcast and all the great stuff here on tumblr. throwing a few extra pennies in the well because I love this damn show.
two particular line callbacks that I caught! the crone tells airk "forget all you know or think you know, and come with me." this is willow's line to elora from 1x02 about magic: "now forget all you know, or think you know." this connects the crone to elora, (they're both entities who have connected to the deep mystical magics) but also, obviously, to willow, as the dark version of his mage. the other is boorman's line "I'm nobody." this echoes elora's line from the first episode, where she's rejecting her heroic identity as elora danan. it shows boorman is also at that point, and is ready, like elora did, to build his way back up.
time is a big thing this episode! and specifically very messed-up, nonlinear time. the main party jump around from location to location, conversation to conversation, with a very loose sense of where it fits on the actual calendar - because the continuity is emotional. they'll only reach the end of the shattered sea and come out of the night once they've worked through all their baggage, which the darkness provides them cover to do (something something rest/subconscious). meanwhile airk is stuck in an endless day, kept from exploring his real feelings and subconscious. there is simultaneously too much and no time for him, as he becomes thirstier and thirstier but does not experience the rest or growth or transformative journey that the others do.
all of kit and elora's interactions were gold this episode. I've always loved their dynamic but now that kit's come into herself, I think this is a representation of how fulfilling that friendship can be: mirrors pushing each other to be better. I love how elora's training with willow spurs kit to train with jade, which spurs elora to train harder. like they're silently challenging each other, but in a much healthier way than before.
kit's "my lady" line is so interesting because given her stated desires ("to be brave and loved and to not be a princess"), the specific role she's taken up in the ensemble (the skeptic/elora's lancer), and some of the ways her relationship with jade has hashed out (their first kiss being very reminiscent of sleeping beauty with kit as the prince, kit's arc of having to prove herself a worthy partner for jade, jade's origins as a bonereaver princess), I sort of wonder if kit did want to be a knight. either way, I think that moment is doubly heartwarming for the way kit fulfills elora's dreams of being a princess and the fact that kit has grown enough to truly embody the chivalry of that gesture.
graydon's love confession was so good both as a romantic moment and a demonstration of his self-confidence. this boy was choking on his drink at dinner in episode 1! look at him now.
the flirty sparring was super hot, and I am very aware that all the spinning and sword-twirling is unrealistic but I don't care (and also choreography is character - this was more of a dance than an actual fight, kit was absolutely showing off her moves, and maybe the fact that kit spins around so much is a sign of trust! she knows jade won't stab her several times in the back! I admit that's probably a stretch.)
kit's look back at jade before falling off the cliff is so heartbreaking and good, both for what it conveys in the moment and for what it conveys about kit's growth as a character. in the beginning, kit would have charged ahead without a second thought, not caring about jade's feelings and probably assuming she'd be right behind her. now kit is still charging ahead (she hasn't lost her core self, a person who will forge ahead when others won't), but she does care about jade, she does look back and check in, and I don't think she assumes jade will follow her, even if she hopes she will.
I hope kenneth is all right.

Kate manages to find time for everything except for her husband. Anne deals with her misbehaving daughter. Jenny's first day back at work doesn't go as planned.
Trivia: When Kate is trying to nurse her son, who hasn't been nursing for a little while, Catherine (the actor and creator) ended up using her own son in this scene. And suddenly after a two week hiatus, he latched on and started nursing. Kate's reaction and pure joy at this moment was a real life reaction.

3x01 Anne
Buffy -- living on her own in a big city -- assists a girl whose boyfriend has mysteriously vanished. Back in Sunnydale, Buffy's friends do their best to battle the forces of evil without her.
I loved Willow's outfit. The purple hat and skirt with a stripey top to match. Very cute. I would wear it now. Then there was Buffy's hair smh. The late 90's really weren't kind to SMG's hairstyles. I don't even know how to describe it but it was very distractingly bad. Poor lass. Hasn't she been through enough?
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
1x02 Departure
Monarch closes in on Cate, Kentaro, and May as they try to track down a key individual. Keiko, Lee, and Billy stumble on a major find.
I'm very much into each timeline having it's own trio. The dual storylines are contrasting really well so far. And it's another Apple show they've clearly put lots of money into making it a visual treat so far. I don't get why Monarch are acting so shady though when they clearly need all the help they can get. Also, that Cate and May scene in the hallway. Oh my. Both actors having played gay before too. Something to keep both eyes on 👀.
