i'm curious what the state of copyright law is regarding like, algorithmic manipulations of data

like if you take some copyrighted material, encode it in some reversible way, and make sure you only distribute the encoded versions (and also whatever decoding algorithm is required) then you have copied the work as far as copyright is concerned. and also if you do some somewhat lossy compression on a file so that it can't be reversed but you can still clearly hear the music/see the movie/etc, that's still copyright infringement. but if you look at a copyrighted image, calculate the average of the RGB values of the pixels, and post those three numbers publicly on twitter, nobody can really argue that's copyright infringement (well, they can argue whatever they want. i would hope they would not succeed in court).

so i wonder if there's any caselaw on the space between those extremes. it'd be absurd to hope there's some definitive 'this is how much information has to be lost for it to not be copying as far as copyright is concerned' number but are there examples of publishing information derived from a copyrighted file and getting sued over that?

Mayybeeee you’re a lil’ sluggish— y’know, just a tad bit exhausted and a pinch achey, maybe a bit too uncomfortably warm but not quite yet sick— just wanna get through the day like normal and not make a fuss about it to anyone who cares about you because you don’t want to be a burden. Just becoming dizzier and dizzier, no longer being able to hold your chin up without feeling like you have a rock for a head, leaning your face to the side so no one is still any wiser to your misery. And then relief, from a mercifully cool touch propping up your heavy forehead, making your drooping eyes blearily flutter and try to focus on a familiar smiling mouth. It’s Seiji, peering down at your face, the back of his hand pressing against burning skin.

Ara, he says, hand lingering, assessment turning into an almost caress, must be happy to see me.

And, Here, candy as a reward for waiting for me— doctor’s orders. Mm, what a good girl!

You’re sick-addled enough to obediently follow the cooing voice like a docile sheep, opening your mouth when a thumb urges down on your bottom lip, and in plops something sweet (and bitter?) melting on your tongue. And before you can raise any feeble objections, he’s turning his head and clucking his tongue like a hen, wagging a blaming finger at your once-oblivious companions (shame shame) for not noticing something so unbelievably obvious (...wouldn't even take a genius like me...!), a hint of impatient annoyance edging his usual flighty voice.

And then it’s his arm lightly brushing around your shoulders… kinda like a protective gesture, like he might carry you off, like he might steal you back to whatever hole he crawled from— and then he says it too, wondering aloud if you’re like this, he might just take up on the opportunity (what a grin, so nefarious, such villainy). It riles your companions like a charm, causes them to scowl and tell him to get his dirty mitts off of you, rushing towards you. And how easily he peels off, but not without a playful tussle to your head, mussing up hair, before looping away— and you don’t even know if that’s the sickness making you see it or just, him— but there is a moment, where he pauses and glances behind, and meets your eyes in that scene.

#i'm some i've read some cosmic horror(/weird fic prob more fitting here) in my time and i do not get those vibes from it at aaaaall #i can believe that cosmic horror is what aini *thought* it was doing. but no.#game doesn't commit nearly enough and its so like. self conscious in terms of 'we gotta make this appeal to more people' to commit #and like in this economy it's just not weird enough tbh #simulation theory as plot point in and of itself does not a cosmic horror/weird fiction make. or like. an interesting one #and when the writing ultimately chickens out with the 'but its okay because even if it's a simulation we all matter and should be content'#which it will #i should be feeling existentially uneasy and instead i'm like 'my god i totally know exactly where this is going'#and it's so needless! you have a scifi concept ripe with fic psychological weird horror potential that went untapped!#why let that just shrivel up in the corner cause sim theory's more big brain?? make a different game then!#i simply do not care about the ''frayer'' or whomstever the player avatar is called today. cause the game don't care either lol #its heart somehow aint in it. which is weird considering how much other good shit was tossed in favour of the new Thing #its pure mechanics. which could work if the game goes all in on mechanical narrative. but the mechanics dont even work #it's not even interested in the interesting meaty bit of the concept it's so completely linear it misses its own point entirely #the mechanics arent integrated with the thematics at all its so clunky which is a shame cause clearly a lot of nitpicking went in #from like the dialogue writers #proofing this thing was a nightmare i would imagine #and like. you can't have a pandemic rocket and stormtrooper horde as the climax of your story and expect me to seriously inspect it #as a proper serious work of cosmic horror i'm too busy rolling my eyes and laughing at it #not saying that something can't have both weird horror and comedy elements to it reasonably speaking #but the horror elements aren't beefy and deeply thought out enough nor is the comedy integrated in such a way to hit that sweet spot #uuuugh theres something in here somewhere but not like. as one game. take one or two elements split them off and develop them #like properly. fully with care and gusto and focus on what the writing actually feels. then you could have a couple of good games #and maybe even a decent cosmic horror product #but this Aint It. weird fiction/cosmic horror is more than a base concept or aesthetic flairs you gotta gets the guts underneath #it will not tag this properly but i will make the walls of tag attached #of increasing and therefore increasingly absurd length. for the bit

i saw this post/video somewhere that absolutely obliterated me and has made me scared for future seasons. i dont remember exactly but it had something to do with sir precious pentious not remembering being in hell and stuff like that. like imagine charlie goes up to heaven once again for some reason and sees sir precious pentious and she's like "SIR PRECIOUS! Oh no I forgot you ship Ted/Becca.

😆 Hi anon! I hope this doesn't ruin your day or anything, whomstever you are. If you don't ship it or ship something opposing or whatever's your bag, I'm sure we can still be friends, or whatever we are.

But I've been mulling this all over since the finale, and this is a good excuse to get my thoughts out. Because I come from ye old timey shipping days of "the idea of them together is cool, regardless of whether it happens or not." so that wasn't really my problem with the ending.

Here are the things that are true:

I really like themes and parallels. I like connecting dots and finding connections and all that jazz

The number of themes and parallels they set up between Ted and Rebecca was delicious and very fun for me.

My reaction to the finale is less upset than it is frustrated and confused.

My frustration isn't purely 'they didn't get together romantically so it sucks.' I had started making peace early S3 with realizing it probably wasn't gonna happen

I am frustrated because I wanted all those bits of cool narrative shit they laid out to Do Something

I am frustrated because it feels like Ted and Rebecca have had very few emotionally connected scenes since season one, and what's the point of parallel journeys and soulmateism if their journeys are going to stay so parallel and not join up more, and then just apparently diverge completely

And on the apparent diverging, I don't love it but it would have sucked less if their lines just matched up more in the middle! That could be poignant! But as is, it's more disappointing than tragic, because whatever potential was there wasn't almost realized and then lost, but instead just... never really approached. It feels wasted.

The show did not owe us them getting together, but what it did give us, I found unsatisfying. That's just a bummer, man.

Forgive me this metaphor but I cannot find a better way to put it: I am frustrated because I feel like I got ridden for 3 seasons while they went 'just wait it'll feel so good' and then they were like 'are you ready?' and then just hopped off and left.

I am confused because at the end of their story, I cannot figure out what I am meant to be feeling about it.

Again, I didn't need them to get together romantically, they totally could've found some other way to make it satisfying! But. Ted and Rebecca getting together romantically would have also tied it up in a lot of ways that worked and made the narrative satisfying.

Having a romance arc that works with their character arcs and the themes they've built on is just really cool as a story.

Obviously all that parallel journey stuff would've actually been leading them somewhere, ie to each other, yay woo

And not to each other just because they've been through similar shit, but because, as that last post said, among a lot of other reasons, they've been set up well to be what the other person needs.

Romance is not the be all, end all. But:

Ted and Rebecca both want to be in love with someone, someday.

Here is someone who already understands and balances and supports them.

Like, that's awesome. Is that not the qualities you want for them in a future romantic partner?

I can't see how it diminishes their friendship if it caries on very similar to it has been, just like, sometimes they smooch. Maybe I'm just too demisexual for this idk

Boat guy. I like boat guy, but he's a chiller version of Ted. I can't find that post that points out all the parallels there, but that episode by the time we got to Kenny Rogers I was like. Uh. Hm.

It's confusing to have boat guy have a beautifully intimate evening with Rebecca, all the while having so many specific details similar to Ted, and then just act like romantic Tedbecca is a wild, character-ruining concept.

Because the show ends with Ted leaving and Rebecca miserably walking out of the airport and straight into proxy-Ted. I have no idea how to feel about that.

I could keep going, but I'm about out for now, so uh. Woe, wasted Tedbecca potential be upon ye~

for the most part the conceit in Worm is that Earth Bet diverged from our timeline somewhere around 1982, when Scion shows up. This is never made explicit (because it'd be fourth-wall-breaky), only discussed relative to Earth Aleph, so it's not quite canon, but it's a useful way to think about e.g. which public figures would still exist and be known for the same things in both worlds (of course, it's pretty standard for media set in contemporary Earth to grant that most history is the same but recent events and public figures are different without ever positing anything about specific points of divergence or the like)

in any case. The concept of "everything pre-1982 matches" is complicated by one obvious fact, which is that our world does not have a city named Brockton Bay on the east coast of the United States, and it can't exactly have popped up in the eighties as-is.

which brings us to my new headcanon: Brockton Bay Popped Up In The Eighties As-Is. A Nilbog-level master-shaker created the city from absolutely nothing and then made everyone think they remember it existing since the colonial period or whenever. They ran the city for years, eventually got wiped by Marquis or Allfather or whomstever, and after the Master effect ended people looking at records were able to realise they make no sense. The PRT/Cauldron knows this but are actively covering it up; the false memories did not erase themselves upon death, so it's just easier to fake all the evidence, deal with whoever notices the inconsistencies, and move on with our lives. It's not like they'll have to keep it up too long, the world will end any day now.
