“Whoever You May Be”

Monday, June 19th, 2023 (22:22) JEFELEN has something a bit different from the usual genre fare to share on this, the United States federal holiday, Juneteenth National Independence Day.It was with a degree of pride that I served as Associate Producer on Ruth Pickett's eight-minute short, "Whoever You May Be", which can now be freely watched in its entirety on the Vimeo™ streaming platform.  Made on a microbudget (with a modest portion of those funds being donated to the Stephen Lawrence Foundation/Blueprint for All charitable cause), and filmed safely in accordance with the mandated lockdown protocols of the 2020 pandemic, the independent project was undertaken as a response to the Black Lives Matter protests that took place worldwide during this tumultuous period of recent history.

A philosophical and wryly comedic short about the assumptions we inherently make about people, ideas of belonging, and the stories we conveniently tell ourselves as a matter of course, the movie follows an enigmatic black British man -- who appears for all intents and purposes to be on his way home from a public demonstration -- who encounters a blustering, right-wing 'All Lives Matter' proponent outside the British Museum one fateful afternoon.

The movie itself was resourcefully shot by a small crew in a single day during the summer of 2020, outside the iconic British Museum, which was closed to the public for the first time during peacetime in its illustrious history, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The well-meaning message is simple enough -- why not give it a look and see what you think?

We could cuddle, or drink tea, or watch movies and pick out all the parts that were better in the books, or we could just stare at each other and tell one another all the things we find truly fascinating about one another, we could just be, together.

I’m gonna start talking about the pieces of music that I’ve written, and sketch while talking and thinking about it. Maybe even while listening to it too! And then the sketch that I make could end up being the cover art for the piece. In the last week or so, I’ve been posting a few video recordings of myself playing various pieces that I’ve written over the last 13 years/latter half of my life. I’m proud to announce that I will be releasing an album this summer, about 17 tracks total (13 piano pieces + 4 piano/vocal/electronic instrumental tracks, with 3 overlaps). I realized that I feel confident in making that announcement and setting that goal, because I have been using Instagram for the purpose of accountability and to fuel my own vehement belief in myself and my ability to set goals and accomplish them, as well as taking pride and accepting compliments in my own skills and talents! 🤗🎶🎹❤️ My album’s title will be “The Path: Stories with Strangers”.
