Gonna edit for grammar and spelling later...
Getting a little irked here by the people defending Voltron S8, because they assume everyone's issues are purely related to shipping. I never really cared who ended up with who at all, (only that everyone should want to date Hunk because he's perfect boyfriend material). Guys, the writing was just bad. It was a poorly written season, a poorly written finale, and honestly, it gave a piss ass message about giving up and letting a friend destroy themselves for the greater good. Not gonna go into to much detail here but these are just a few of my complaints:
1. Pacing and Story telling. The pacing of this season was bizarre. They started off with essentially a filler episode to quickly throw in Allurance as cannon (with some hella stiff dialogue but we'll get to that later) and then had like... a few episodes to justify bringing back old characters so we could get a last glimpse. Then 2 filler episodes in a row, then a straight run to the finish with a thrown together plotline. Literally nothing in this show prefaced Haggar as the big bad. 90 percent of the time she didn't seem to even want Lot or around, much less want anything to do with Altea or her own affiliations. The Alteans who followed her never felt like fully thought out characters either. They ended the last season with the red haired Altean pilot giving way to tons of theories about her past and who she could be, but she was literally just a drone set to die 5 minutes after introduction. That's bad forshadowing.
2. Important off screen plot points. Why on earth would they do this? Why would pink general just suddenly switch to the coillition? Why did they make us think she died in the explosion and then backtrack two minutes later? Why did they end the show with Shiro and Adam's big gay kiss (yes, it's Adam, listen to the audio description, they literally day it's Adam) without ever establishing Adam's return? They could've easily spent a scene where team Voltron returns to earth to grieve and find that in this new timeline (because yes, it's a new timeline despite what the characters think, if destroyed planets are suddenly back) Adam didn't die and is waiting for Shiro. They could've given them a real moment, developed their (nonexistent on screen) relationship and at least made their big moment at the end less sudden and so clearly damage control from burying their gay last season.
3. Relationship dialogue. I don't want to harp on Allur*nce as a ship itself here. It's not my thing, but I'm positive fan fiction writers and fanartists have made some pretty awesome stuff that's well made and fun to read and look at. I'm strictly looking at the shows portrayal of it. My number 1 complaint? The bizarrely platonic dialougue whenever the two talk. I'll give Lance this, he seemed at least interested in their romance this season, but whenever she and Lance talked, it was all just so formal - and half of what she said was exposition. Even during their date, and Alluras big reveal about feeling alone on earth felt so strangely platonic, and I truly believe that is the gault of the writers. They should've planted moments of growth between these two seasons ago! Not simply kept going with this tired and unrealistic "boy wears girl down until she says yes" trope. Even if they w erent certain they were going to go ahead with Allura and Lance, they could've built in friendship bolstering moments. Then, this date could've been so much less clunky. And to have Lance tell Allura he loves her on the first date? Even if it wasn't unrealistic, it also takes out any of the impact that the phrase carries later. By the time of her sacrifice Lance has said it onscreen so much that "I love you" has little to no weight. No wonder it was so easy for Allura to yeet herself into the void - she never exactly returned his sentiments - being too busy with exposition dialogue to make any strides in their (budding) relationship. Again, I have no problem with Allur*nce, only the lazy and ineffective way it was portrayed in the last few seasons.
4. Allura's sacrifice. I'm not even going to get into the political implications of making the Black woman bear the burden of the universe on her shoulders to the point where she literally has to sacrifice her body and soul to save the cosmos. I'm talking the actual execution of how they went about it. There's this concept in fiction writing where your most dramatic scene, your climax, should use an economy of words and time to be the most effective. That's why it hurts so much in movies like Wonder Woman, and even Titanic, when lead characters die. There usually is no time for goodbye, or if there is, it's brief and visual. Instead, the writers chose to give Allura an absurdly long time to say goodbye to everyone, and what's crazy is, no one but Lance objected? Like at all? They just accepted right away that there was no other way. I never took them as a fatalist bunch but hey, why stick to human characteristics now. Clearly the only person who should object to you self sacrificing is your significant other. This is why so much sacrifice in narrative is done in a way that refuses to give loved ones time to react because any sane person would at least try to stop them initially, and grasp at straws for another solution. I hated how the team just shrugged their shoulders and let Allura kill herself for the greater good. Their silence wasn't tragic, it was lazy.
5. Their lions just... left? The universe is done needing defense? Just like that? How did everyone get home from their princess death picnic? Do they make uberpools for space travel? Did they all agree not to be paladins anymore before this? What about Hunks dream of handing off the reins of Yellow to the next generation of paladins? Why did they write it this way? Who did this? Who do I blame?
I think what frustrates me the most is that the comedic episodes were still good. I truly think filler has always been the strongest asset voltron had. The dynamics were always much stronger in the funny episodes, and it seems like they wasted a lot of potential this season with rushed plot points and filling plotholes off screen.
I have more issues with this season, and I'll post them when I feel like adding to this list, but to say that people didn't like S8 because their ship didn't happen is obnoxious, especially when a season full of plot holes and rushed explanations is what we were left with. And on the subject of dissappointment, i didnt go over it here, but people being upset at the queer baiting are so valid. Even if you weren't into Kl*nce, the producers pretty much tried to sell the show on it. To use lgbt content, especially content that was never going to be cannon, as a marketing tactic is despicable. While strides were made by the show, airing the first animation of men kissing on screen in an show aimed at kids, the victory leaves a bad taste when the couple in question was never justified in the narrative beforehand, and was used as a ploy to fulfill the promise of lgbt rep, without actually using any of the budding relationships developing in the show (not limited to Kl*nce by any means. They could've done Sh*ith, H*ith, H*nce, ect).
If this season felt complete and left you with a feeling of contentment, good for you, I too enjoy a guilty pleasure as much as the next person. That said, this was a badly written season on all fronts. I think they did Allura and Allur*nce dirty with the resolution. They missed opportunities for character development in favor of more repetitive space battles. Don't try to invalidate people's contempt at this season by defending the creators for making the show in the first place, when they didn't live up to the standards of narrative fiction to get a passing grade in a creative writing class.
And because I want to end on something nice, I thought that the meeting of the old paladins and the new paladins was very cool, and it was really interesting to see Zarkon interact with the paladins in a new way. So... at least there's that?

Voltron knows what they are doing, please stay positive
Okay, I don’t normally write posts on here, I mostly just browse through and fangirl at as much Voltron shit as I can, but with season 7 being what it was and all the backlash people have been giving the vld cast and crew, I wanted to put my own thoughts out there hopefully to even out all the negativity with a few positive thoughts.
Okay, first off I want to discuss the main thing people have been blowing up about; Adam’s death and the supposed queer baiting.
First off, I think Adam’s death was in fact written for a solid reason. At first, I was like most people, thinking that it was really poor writing to just throw this brand new character away like that without any real development. But after really thinking it over, I began to realize why they might have written in his death, and no, it was not to kill him off just because he’s gay and the writers are homophobic. Honestly, think about it, If they really were wouldn’t it have been better to get there message across by just not making Shiro gay at all? Which we know was an option with that other recorded version where Shiro and Adam are just friends.
Anyway, let's look back at episode 1 during the talk between Adam and Shiro. We know this was supposed to be Adam warning Shiro that if he leaves they are finished as a couple.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But actually, there is more to this scene then just that. It was foreshadowing to Adam’s fate.
Tumblr media
He literally wasn’t there when Shiro returned to Earth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This obviously makes Shiro feel extremely guilty and regretful. He lost his chance to live out a life with Adam due to choosing his career/dream over him. Yes this is depressing, but one of the main rules of writing is that everything is written for a reason, and so far the writers have done a beautiful job following this rule, so what possible reason could there be for killing off Adam?
Well, this is where we get into the queerbaiting. Yes, I will admit, I got a bit upset after seeing how much they really promoted Shiro and Adam, making us think they were a bigger deal then they turned out to be, but what if they still are a big deal. Sure they weren’t the LGBT+ rep we all hoped they would be, and we won’t be seeing them together in Season 8 unless it’s in a flashback, but keep in mind they still were two cannonly gay men in a popular tv show, and that in itself is still a step in the right direction, they are showing that homosexual relationships exist.
Besides, what if they still aren't the only LGBT+ rep?
We know for a fact Ezor and Zethrid were cannonly gay, Bex apparently confirmed it. I personally don’t see an issue in that regard. I thought it was cool to see them together, especially thinking back to their somewhat comical interactions together in the past.
Tumblr media
Anyway, we see that they aren’t afraid of making multiple gay couples in this show, and it’s suppose to be set in a time period where society is very accepting to different sexual preferences, so why not show these different sexual preferences. I think there is going to be more LGBT+ rep than just the ex generals and Adashi.
Most of you probably know where I’m going with this.
Tumblr media
Now I will admit, I am a hardcore Klance shipper, but I honestly think out of any LGBT+ relationship this show could go for, these two would be a perfect choice. Their relationship has grown so much from rivals to friends, and could easily go that step further into something romantic. Now some say Season 7 was the death of Klance, and my pessimistic side agreed for a while, but if you really think back, we got some serious moments with these two. Honestly, if it weren’t for the Allurance blush scene, I would say these two were official without a second thought.
First we had this look from Lance when Keith said he was going to try and save Axca.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lance looks genuinely worried for Keith. His view of him has changed so drastically from the beginning of the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s no longer trying to compete with him, he’s actually praising him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I honestly think this scene is more than just something goofy they added in for the comedic affect of Keith’s reaction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, everything is written for a reason. In this scene not only is Lance praising Keith as their leader but he’s literally saying Keith is the future. What if this is foreshadowing Keith being Lance’s future? Lance’s choice for his future. We all know he could have easily chosen Allura and they could have made it really romantic, but no, he chose Keith. He didn’t want Keith to be stuck there for eternity. He trusted Keith to lead the coalition and end the war.
Plus Keith looks more than a little annoyed at Bob. Almost like he just wants him to get off his back about it. I mean really look at them, out of all the paladins Keith is the only one that looks really upset during this part of the show.
Not to mention that he was the only one that didn’t have to think before writing down his answer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ive thought for a while that Keith has a crush on Lance, but just refuses to do anything about it because either he doesn’t think Lance would accept his feelings, or (more likely), he’s more concerned with the war and leading Voltron. The Blade hammered into his head that the mission comes above all else, It wasn’t until his mother showed up that he started to hear a different perspective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, now that we’re on the subject of Keith, lets start to bring this whole thing full circle.
Shiro and Keith are obviously really close, they have been for years. They trust each other, and care very deeply for each other.
Tumblr media
Keith knew about Adam and Shiro. He knew how close they were and how Shiro chose the mission over their relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keith must know how awful Shiro feels now that he can never be with Adam again. He chose the mission above the person he loved. Shiro is going through the stages of grief, which we will probably see next season. He wouldn’t want anyone to have to go through his pain and regret, especially someone like Keith, who has again been told to put the mission is above all else.
Thankfully, his mother taught him a lot during their two years together,
Tumblr media
But obviously Keith still has traces of his old self, which we see especially during episode 6.
The loner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hothead.
Tumblr media
Keith isn’t perfect. Yes he has learned a lot, and grown as a leader and a paladin, but Keith is still Keith. It’s entirely possibly that he would try to choose the mission over someone dear to him, just like Shiro, who would also be the first person to try and stop him.
Lets also not forget this drawing:
Tumblr media
It’s a fact that Lance likes girls, specifically Allura. And the scene of them blushing at each other has put a lot of people on edge. Even some Allurance shippers as well, thinking that moment seemed to have come out of no where.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I can totally get behind Allura wanting Lance to be safe and telling him that before leaving, because it parallels this:
Tumblr media
But it’s the blush that makes the moment seem forced. Allura hasn’t shown any romantic interest toward Lance at all. Most of them have been platonic, and even when she found out about Lance’s feelings, she didn’t look even remotely happy about it.
Tumblr media
Now this might have have been somewhat forced for a reason. This makes it possible to address their potential relationship right off the bat next season. It will show if they really do fit together romantically or not. Allura might even brush Lance off a few times, being too busy for him, which could hurt Lance, having it be the second time she would have done this. The first time when she was with Lotor.
This could potentially be the start of Lance’s sexuality arc, and Shiro will be there for him if the show really is sticking to the picture.
Lost post short, this is why I think Adam was killed off. Not because he was gay, but because it was needed for this part of the story to unfold properly. Shiro is full of guilt and regret now. He lost Adam and can never get him back. He wouldn’t want anyone to make the same mistakes he did.

Black Paladin Lance????
Okay I’m about to make a long theory about why I think black paladin Lance can AND SHOULD happen DISCLOSURE: I may be hard core reaching so don’t get your hopes up (uh or down if you want black paladin Keith???).
I’m gonna start from the beginning, when in the dessert, the blue lion doesn’t open for Keith, but the second Lance knocks on the barrier she opens up immediately, so you’d think he’s meant for the blue lion. However, in an interview, Lauren said something along the lines of “we put the paladins in the lions that felt right now in order for them to evolve” so I’m thinking that the way everything is set up right now is only like this in order for them to grow. Lance growing is something that Joaquim Dos Santos has brought up in numerous interviews. In fact, the topic of Lance maturing has been talked about a lot by the writers and the voice actors. Moving on, when Allura talks about the qualities of the black lion she says it should be someone who’s “always in control”, which is literally in no way, shape, or form Keith ever. Keith is in, Lance’s words, HOT HEADED, like he really is. He’s really impulsive and TEMPERAMENTAL, just like the red lion. He always thinks before he acts, (RUNNING ON INSTINCTS!!!) which is another quality of the RED lion. These are all really great things about Keith, but they’re also really not qualities a level headed leader should have.
While on the topic of Keith, let’s talk about season two. In season two, the writers made it clear time and time again that the red lion has a special bond with Keith. Keith got ejected into space multiple times and the red lion saved him every one of those times. If the writers were planning on making Keith the new black paladin, it just seems weird to me for them to put emphasis on the bond Keith has with the red lion in season two so much. Keith truly does seem as if he’s meant for the red lion. He fits all the criteria that the red lion wants in a paladin perfectly. Keith constantly acts alone with no regard to the other paladins. Like how Keith somehow thinks the second he and Zarkon are within arms reach of each other it’d be smart to fight him one on one instead of waiting for the other paladins to form Voltron. He’s just the type of person who thinks it’s best to take action in the moment without thinking it through. Honestly, I can go on and on about instances in which Keith has shown that his personality just isn’t fit to be a leader (he’s great though, really! I love him), but let’s talk about Lance now. Yes, he can be immature and a little wild at times, but he can and has matured a lot already. There are a lot of instances in which Keith was about to do something reckless without thinking and Lance tries to talk him out of it. Lance is just overall better at assessing a situation and thinking of the best course of action. Lance has a big family, including little nieces and nephews, so he must have patience and know what it’s like to be in charge sometimes. To be a good leader, you can’t be a very temperamental or high-strung person. So unless Lance was a sucky and/or mean uncle, he’s probably in control of his emotions cause, you know, children can be annoying.
Now I’m gonna talk a little about season three episode one, as well as both of the season three trailers released. This episode and one of the trailers were shown at comic con and I was there, so if you don’t want any spoilers about the episode please skip this. Okay so first of all, Lance showed his growth a lot in this episode. Lance always calls Keith his “rival”, yet when Keith was down about Shiro’s disappearance, he steps up to comfort him without hesitation. Everyone side eyes Lance, but he doesn’t even look back at them. Like he already knows, without looking at them, that he’s gonna go console Keith because that’s just the type of person Lance is. Lance is very caring and he wants to help everyone, even his “rival”. Just the fact that he did this shows how much he’s matured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, Keith was SUPER temperamental this episode, saying things to possible former allies out of the anger he had from losing Shiro. Of course, he’s angry and sad, but he was being really careless. Not once, did he think about how the words he said would hurt their ties with these aliens. Like look at him being all whiny and angry!
Tumblr media
I mean I love Keith I really do but come on man wyd??
Tumblr media
Okay here’s where I talk about tiny details that I happened to notice in the trailer/episode release!  These are just things I noticed and they could really mean nothing, but I love reaching. So, in the end of the first episode of season three just look at the way the lion is positioned.
Tumblr media
Then look at the way it’s positioned when everyone, BUT LANCE is surrounding it.
Tumblr media
The mouth is opened and the arm is in a slightly different position as well. So clearly, the lion has already been moved. I think they’re all tried to do it the way Shiro said it should be done, with Keith being the new leader. So yeah obviously, Keith is seen piloting the black lion in both trailers. Yet, the way they’re all surrounding the lion makes it seem like they’re somehow experiencing some issues with it. In the trailer, there are a lot of times in which there seems to be struggles with the lions and the way they’re being piloted. Weirdly enough, the blue lion seems to be having the most struggles. Like especially this part where the blue lion is literally out of control flailing around into an abyss or something??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where it go??? Okay anyway, this is may be reaching, but during all these scenes we really don’t know who is piloting the blue lion. What I think could be a possibility is that the blue lion isn’t cooperating with Lance well because she knows it’s time for lance to move on since Lance has grown and should go to the lion he’s meant for. I think he gets the message and automatically assumes that this means he should move on to the red lion (since it’s pretty much predetermined that Keith is gonna pilot black), so he does. They try this out but there are so many problems! Like they don’t get why none of this is working out the way they want it to. So going back to everyone huddling around the black lion in it’s hangar. Maybe the black lion isn’t really cooperating because Keith is trying to CONTROL it, which the black lion isn’t a fan of. That isn’t really a good thing for Keith because he has a controlling personality even though he isn’t in control of his own emotions. Keith has already piloted the black lion when Shiro was being attacked, but that was in a desperate time of need. Keith pleaded with the black lion and he probably does that again to pilot it the second time.
However, in battle, I don’t see Keith talking to get through to the black lion. In battle, he’s just moving on instincts and his first instinct probably isn’t to talk it out calmly with his lion if it’s not cooperating. Knowing Keith he’s probably just like LISTEN TO ME!!!! STOP IT!!!! What I’m thinking is Keith just isn’t meant to pilot the black lion because his personality and the black lion don’t mix well. Keith tries to pilot the black lion even though it isn’t exactly working out which is when, after a mission gone wrong, they all stand around the black lion and try to figure out what the heck is the problem. I think they all take turns trying to get the lion to work with them. Then, Lance gives it a go which is why he’s not in that photo above where they’re all staring at the black lion. So maybe he touches the lion, and that’s when the lions mouth opens for him. So everyone kinda just stands there looking and shocked telling him he should go inside, so he does. Then I think Lance sits in the hangar and the lion MOVES for Lance like without hesitation. Like the screen cap of everyone but Lance surrounding the black lion and the screen caps of the black lion moving look like they are literally back to back. I mean the lion is literally lying in the same position it was before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe the lion had a lot of hesitation and took a lot of pleading on Keith’s end in order for him to pilot black. Then, Lance goes and connects with the lion so easily, which makes everyone realize ‘oh my gosh wait maybe, Lance is actually meant to pilot the black lion in Shiro’s absence.’ I think a lot of the time, Lance is overlooked as some comedic relief, so it’d be really nice if he just got a litle recognition for how strong and mature he actually is. Like he obviously isn’t the responsible adult Shiro is, but he also isn’t the childish flirt he is sometimes made out to be. GIVE LANCE AND HUNK RESPECT PLEEASE. But okay,  I don’t know what’s going on during that whole scene but it’s fun to theorize. This is literally just a lot of speculation and I only wrote this for fun, cause yeah I’m pretty doubtful this could happen, but idk MAYBE??!?!
