Speaking of “A Burning Hill” by Mitski, lemme just do the TikTok thing and break it down by listener character and/or Boi for you.
Today I will wear my white button down. / I’m tired of wanting more.
Marcus and his listener. One of two on this list who match up. They’re put together, collected, and professional on the outside. And on the inside, don’t they both yearn? Isn’t that why Marcus wove it into their coding, created a person for himself? And they both know that even though their connection is intense, that it’s false.
I think I’m finally worn.
Avior and Starlight. Two of two. Avior is tired. He’s tired in whatever universe we see him. He’s trapped and he’s sick of it and he’s lost so much. And so he brought Starlight in with him. And now they’re tired too.
For you have a way of promising things.
Vega. Oh god Vega. He twists and changes the ways that the listener perceives things. It’s hopeless, afterall. But he can provide a bit of purpose, can’t he?
And you know what? Bold statement, but also Caelum. A promiser if there ever was one. He’ll fix things, he’ll make it better, he’ll make it stop hurting, he promises. Maybe he’s right. Maybe he’s not.
And I’ve been a forest fire.
Darlin’. They’re burned out, but that fire was there. They were alight with it, with the pain of it. And now they’re just an ember.
Gavin. He’s sick of being on fire. He’s sick of being just an object for heat. But Free has a way of fanning out his flames, of letting him settle.
I am a forest fire […]
Bright Eyes. Whatever Darlin’ once was, Bright is now. For good or bad.
Quinn. Aren’t they so similar, after all?
[…] and I am a fire […]
Freelancer. Oh, how they burn. How they rage for something, something, anything. For a chance to prove themselves. For a chance to show what they’re made of.
Damien. And isn’t that what makes the two of them such good friends? They burn in just the same way. Damien burns for a chance to change things. To change anything.
[…] and I am the forest,
Lovely. They’ve been burned. They’ve been hurt. And there are still parts of them that are scorched. But they’re healing. And they’re full of life again. And the birds are returning.
William. He’s calm to the every chaos of the clan. He’s firm and vast and old. Like recognizes like, and he sees the forest in Lovely too. That’s why he likes them so much, I think.
And I am a witness watching it.
Baby. Poor baby. They’ve watched their own destructing at the hands of someone at the hands of someone else. Their suffering is two degrees removed, the fault of a force they don’t and can’t know about. And then even that is taken away from them. Even the knowledge of their scars is erased.
Bracium. He’s a witness to the passing of life. He’s a witness who can’t do anything about it, not really. And when he does, the charge he saved is thrown into even deeper danger. And he can’t reach them. And he can’t save them.
I stand in a valley watching it / and you are not there at all.
Two boys for this one.
Ivan. Listen, we can talk about the complicated ethical situation Ivan was in, but when it comes down to it, he was fucked over by a force outside of his control too. He was lonely. And that loneliness was twisted into something horrible. How deep does that loneliness go if it can be twisted that far?
Camelopardalis. And he had to watch it all. And it lives in his head now, all alone.
So today I will wear my white button down. / I can at least be neat / walk out and be seen as clean.
Davey. God does he put himself back together in a hurry when he falls apart. The person he depended on most in this world is gone and he sticks up his chin and carries on. And until Angel came along, he didn’t have a choice.
Sweetheart. What are they to do but keep it together? They’re overworked in a system that is falling apart around them. And they have to make it work. The Department is doing them no favors and they have to watch while their demonic coworkers get even worse treatment than they do. And they keep it together. What else can they do?
And I’ll go to work and I’ll go to sleep / and I’ll love the littler things / I’ll love some littler things.
And isn’t this everybody? They all struggle, they all suffer, and they have somebody. They learn to love them, to love the littler things. More or less.
Anyway I should maybe make some playlists and stop bombarding y’all’s feeds with song analysis.

dream (XD, maybe?) visits fundy in his dreams. it's the only thing making them bearable, and keeping him sane
:)
Nobody [inspired by a mitski song]
Many make mistakes, Fundy was one of them. He just wanted to make sure Yoghurt was safe that night, what with more mobs emerging from the south. He just wanted to tuck his kid and make sure he slept better than him. With kiddish purrs becoming white noise, he should've stopped himself when he felt his lids flutter, when his bed dipped and he saw the house go black.
The fox-hybrid opened his eyes, already letting the horror sink in before opening the damn door. It was all over again, he thought he was getting better. No. He was a fool, still a foolish fox. Yoghurt was no longer by his side, and he already started to feel sweltering heat entering the home. Fundy's heart already ached, already sore. His breaths were heavy, weighted over him as he laid in the dreaded empty bed. Tears were beginning to form but he blinked and rubbed them harshly away. Just close your eyes, he thought. But he knew better, wishes could never be reality. He just wanted it to be over, so he had to do it himself. Fundy always had to do everything himself anyways, this was no different.
He got up and readjusted his black breton cap. Steady and stalwart, steps crept towards and stopped in front of the door. Twisting the knob, a final breath was heaved before the same scenery greeted the displeasured fox. He became familiar with the barren land, covered by only hot dry sand and tall cacti. The winds seemed to be strong that dream, dust clouds were choking the poor dreamer. He closed the door behind him, noticing his red tail hung low. First thing was first, he left the area of his house to find anything out of place. It was instinct to try and spot something that stuck out like a sore thumb, besides his little spruce wood cottage.
Fundy sank his naked feet into the sand, burning his padded paws. He trudged along in a random direction, which was wherever the barest clouds were drifting opposite from. That's all he did for a couple of minutes, maybe more than half an hour to him. Prime, he hated how the sun was bright, how the sunshine was a glaring spot above him. He hated to stare at the dull sky for any second longer. He hated winds dusting the sand into his eyes. All of it was n eyesore, metaphorically and litterally.
He just continued onward, awaiting any subtle and not-so-subtle ghostly remnants of his history coming back to haunt. To be reminded of why his life sucked, that was surely fun, right? He wanted a break, a detour from the disaster that was him. For not the first time, he wanted to be elsewhere. Not just in the dream but in reality. Yes, Las Nevadas was the haven he wanted it to be. But that came with the cost of having his dreadfully undead father closer to him. As if he wanted a chance to be mocked and haunted. Even more so, Tubbo and Ranboo causing a commotion with Quackity already had set him at unease. Threats towards a nation he called a home, a lovely return to the cycle. Like dirty water from the sea to acid rain in the clouds, it's become the same horrid cycle.
Speaking of clouds, the fox-hybrid looked up. The smallest gathering of clouds became a crowd of them all across a brighter baby blue canvas. The yucky yellow sand turned a grassier green. If he squinted, he could maybe see the blooms of other than cactus flowers. Finally, a reason for the feet under him to pick up their pace. Fundy kept running towards the green, faster and faster as he could taste them with his fingers. As soon as he was near enough, he dived right into the fresh field. A little mistake, per usual, as he began rolling down a knoll all of a sudden. Through the short wild grass into a taller field of lavender and peonies, the fox finally took a deep breath. A clean and relaxed breath-
"Hello, Fundy."
- before it hitched.
Fundy lifted his head up above the flowers to spot a cleared spot. In the patch of cornflowers and poppies, a naked area of just grass lay, with a figure. He knew it well, with the dirty blonde hair - though he never remembered it being at scruffy and shoulder length - and deadly smile-painted mask adorned. In a lime, white and black letterman jacket over a starkingly orange jumpsuit. He knew that man well, even by the soft humming. The blank eyes of the mask and the man behind to stared at the fox-hybrid. If it weren't a nightmare yet, Fundy figured it just started.
"How are you here?" The hoodied man asked
"Don't...don't even talk to me..." The overcoated fox snarled with teeth bared and tail puffed.
Dream huffed, toying with something in his hands.
"I just asked. The dreamscape is not normally so free reign. For you, you're the least I expected to be able to cross barriers of mind."
"What the fuck are you talking about. Why are you here? What, to haunt me? To mock me? To tell me I'm useless?"
"...To make flower crowns"
He held up said piece of rope strung with flower blooms. His was a cornflower and daisy crown.
"That...that's it?"
"Can you control your dreams?"
"That...it's none of your business, Dream."
"I'm assuming no. But you are willingly seeing me. So in that case, I suppose I can tell you. You know I was imprisoned, in that big ol' prison? Anyway, a being gave me a wish, or rather a gift. I could control my own dreams, I could lucid dream whenever I wanted to. So I could stay in prison while still feeling the grassy field. So I'm here."
"You don't...get nightmares? NOS Cary reminders of your past? Nothing scary?" *And while I do?*, Fundy doesn't add on. Dream pauses for a break. before he answers
"How could I? I control every aspect of my dream. Though you are certainly not part of it. I appreciate the company, kinda? But I'd rather not keep it. It's be nice if I just asked that dream being to remove you-"
"NO!"
"Excuse me?"
"P-Please...I-I don't wanna go back..."
He hated how his voice became frail at the drop of a hat, how his ears flattens and how shaky his hands became. Already begging to a tyrant, the same one who's destroyed everything in his life. What Fundy had begged was true, however, he didn't not want to go back to nightmares. This was the only time the dreams felt good. Albeit muddled by a lime menace, it was better than the frightening things ahead did him. The fox heard the man sigh.
"Sure, sure you can stay."
"Thank you..."
Fundy sat down in front of Dream, criss-cross legged. And the two were silent. The dreamer kept weaving in the flowers in the rope while the intruder simply watched. His clawed hands picked at the grass blades. Admittedly he enjoyed the scenery, if it weren't for the horror of a man in front of him. He noticed the excess rope tossed aside and something in Fundy urged him to use it too. He could tell eyes were on him again even from behind the unmoving mask.
"Yes, you can make flower crowns too. You know how to make one?"
"Y-yeah. Niki taught me how to make one with rope. I made hers with alliums. She gave me one made out to tulips" Fundy chuckled at the memory fondly.
Dream paid no mind just gave Fundy the extra rope and returned to his own project. After that, the quietness continued for much longer. But Fundy was never a fan of long silences.
"...Why a field? Out of flowers? I didn't know you were into this kind of stuff."
Dream paused for a minute, seemingly deliberating. He room a breath and spoke;
"It's just me wanting to relive old memories. Before settling in the SMP, me and George went to a flower field. We just spent half the say there doing jack all."
"It's always George is it?"
"... he's my friend. I'd do anything for him."
"Even terrorising a nation? Even threatening a kid? Even dethroning him?"
"..."
The silence spoke volumes. Fundy knew he overstepped, but it was hard for him to be sympathetic over it. He swore the surroundings looked dimmer for a second.
"I miss him. I'm no longer allowed visitors and even then, he never came by to visit."
"Who did?"
"Sapnap. Bad. Tommy, surely you know. Then Technoblade."
"Wait Techno visited you?"
"Less visit and more just made a new space in my jail cell. It's like a vacation to him. I'm not mad but...I like here better anyway."
"What's it like? In the jail cell."
"Tight. Closed. Hot. And I mean scorching. It's surrounded by lava. Barely much room to move around, not much there. I do have books to write in but so far I have started writing none."
"Someone hasn't been productive, I see?"
"I liked to write stuff. Just random things. But in a cramped space...I can't. I see why people are claustrophobic. It's feel like hell in there...for more than just the lava."
Fundy started to feel a twinge of a heat wave on his back as he stuck a flower into the rope. It died down shortly after.
"Since you're asking me questions. It should be fair I ask you."
"That's...yeah, that's fair."
"What were you doing, before you slept?"
"In bed. Just...alone in my cottage. Far away with no one else." Fundy lied, no matter the somewhat friendly tone, he wasn't ever going to risk Yoghurt.
"I thought you had Eret? Or Niki? I thought maybe you guys stay in at Least a neighbourhood."
"I...I haven't spoken to either in so long. I think they forgot about me. That's...fair"
"Hmm..."
Before I slept I was just building m stuff in Las Nevadas. It's...it's a thing Quackity built. I can't say more than that-"
A roar of something, not too loud but enough to be noticeable, came through. It spooked Fundy well enough.
"Dream what-"
"Let's...not talk about that."
"Well, what else is there to talk about me? I have nothing else. That...that palace is all I got going for me honestly."
"I thought you had more."
"No. After L'manburg, all of it gone, I don't have much else. By who, I wonder?I didn't care, that was fine by me until I did something different. I'm making sure I have a place, at least."
"Like a house?"
Fundy twisted the stalk gently, silently.
"Like a place of belonging. Where I can be remembered and people know where I am."
"I get that..."
"Of course you do, you tyrant. Your name is sure to be famous."
"Not the being remembered part. The belonging part."
The clouds seemed heavier at that moment.
"Find it hard to believe coming from the same guy that he cares for no one but a kid's discs."
"I know what I said, Fundy. But I don't care about the discs. I care about having control. Having everything in my hands. To take strings of the marionette and play them by my fingers. That's what I aim for, not just useless material discs."
"What does this have to do with belonging?"
The roar came back, a roar of thunder.
"The puppet master is not a puppet. He cannot be a puppet. When the puppets go free, he is left for dead..."
Dream's scarred hands clutch the half done green tulip crown. Down a drop goes from the petal. Then another, then another. Fundy looks up, to see the trickles. Down the drops of precipitation go to his face. Fundy's chest felt heavy, clebtched by something in a grip. He saw Dream looking up as well. From the angle he could partially see the bottom features under the mask. A pursed mouth with scars on his lips. Dottings of freckles across his cheeks. Streaks of not raindrops reaching down his chin. He heard the hiccups, the struggle to compose oneself. He knew that too well. Fundy found the part to care about as he stroked Dream's forearm carefully.
"I-I'm sorry, It's...I-I'm never like this. I'll just change-" the masked man's voice was breakable, cusp of falling apart.
"No. I like the rain."
Dream looked back to Fundy. It was true, the fox-hybrid liked rain. He used to play in the puddles as it drizzled even into adulthood, before more important things occupied his time. Like getting weapons for war or spying on a president. Fundy had on a solemn smile, a weak one in the likeable weather. His hair and fur became bristled whislt his tail wrapped unconsciously around him.
"I feel alone too. Everyone has left me
The people that I care about always hate me or leave. They leave me frightened in a place where everything so to survive. I'm barely staying alive as is. I don't have anyone."
"I don't have anyone either. I'm heartless, I pushed them away. Techno is with me, yeah. But what happens then? I'm too scared to find out. All I want is to just be free..."
Fundy laughed a bit. He tossed aside the half-effort flower crown and stood up. He opened his arms wide, further than his shoulders. He kept laughing, giggling, wheezing over. He raked a hand through ginger and snow white locks of his, knocking back his black breton cap.
"What's so funny?"
"Well, one, it's already crazy you're telling me all of this. This all feels like stuff you'd suppressed hard. Even in your dreams. And secondly...god, I wish we talked more sooner."
"What?"
"You and me, both alone in this world. We're unlovable. Reckless bastards we are. I'm not the worst like you but by Prime, I'm just as lonely as you. I can't excuse reving Wilbur and the 16th...but maybe we could've been friends."
He knew dream was smiling, not from the mask but from the small line of daylight peeking through the clouds.
"Fundy, I could never be friends with you. I'd push you away too."
"Then don't push me away now. I'm desperate, man."
"...I wouldn't."
Fundy smiled a glint of the sun right back at Dream. For once in a dream, he was at ease. The pouring rain slowed s little down to a drizzle, enough fro him to avoid smelling of dog water. The clouds journeyed away from the meadow, and let the sun's smile through. He loved the rays of sunshine gracing his face above him. He loved he could stare at the cloud-scattered sky for almost hours. He loved the winnow through the grass that made them dance. He loved it there.
"Sorry about the rain. In my dreams, I rarely can talk to anyone. And techno is not exactly the most relatable with what I have. Outside, I keep it in. But where I am, where we are, is inside me already."
"Fun to know this is the inner machinations of the terror Dream."
"Hehehah"
"...I probably won't remember this happend. When I wake I won't have a clear thought of events. Just so you'd know."
"It's fine. I knew you wouldn't anyway. That's why I let most of it out. That and because, I feel like I can trust you. I can't leave my cell but maybe someday I'll find you again. And maybe-"
A click from behind Dream's head could be heard. He moved his hand latched onto the mask and pulled it down. There he was, gentle scarred smile with even gentler eyes, covered by dirty blonde turning silver white to the tips. Irises coloured almost like emerald and aqua ender eyes looked back to the fox. Finally, his black tipped ears lifted and twitched, and his tail was wagging slightly.
"-we could be alone together again?"
Fundy's heart ached, sore already.
"I'd like to. For now, let's just depend on dreams."
"I can work with that."
Dream tossed his mask aside, uncaring and apathetic to the piece of porcelain disguise. He gently pushed Fundy by the tip of his finger, to which the former feign to be toppled. He fell in the middle of the tall peonies and lavenders and tulips. Dream joined a second after, right next to Fundy. Bliss, this is what he Fundy would call it. He felt less tensed, less mangled on fear. He had spent sleeping hours just shaken, because his fears conquered him alone. Taunting him because he was alone. Preyed on every part of him alone. But now he had a chance, to dwell int eh shrot grass, be crowned royalty in a field of flowers and feel less on his own. Fundy closed his eyes, as the smell of morning dew hit him.
And he woke up, lied curled up next to Yoghurt. And with a flower in his palm. A rose. He already wants to sleep, no matter the chance of being in the desert again. He wants to see the sunshine in the field of flowers more than anything.

My Most Anticipated Releases of 2020
Now that 2019 is behind us, it’s time to look into the oncoming year for exciting new releases to come!
Tumblr media
Manic by Halsey (January 17th): Halsey’s music is a mixed bag for me, but even I can’t deny that she’s got some real gems in her discography or that listening to Badlands makes me nostalgic to no end. The singles Halsey has released so far for this project are a mixed bag in my book. “Without Me” doesn’t click with me and “Nightmare” is messy and gets grating quickly. However, I like the others quite a bit, especially the synthpop euphoria of “Graveyard,” which I’ve returned to quite a bit over the past year. If the rest of the album leans more in that direction, I can see myself liking it quite a bit.
Tumblr media
High Rode by Kesha (January 31st): Hearing Rainbow back in 2017 was one of the most exciting pop album listening experiences of the 2010s. Not only did Kesha deliver a confident, spirited, self-assured message, but she also blended together a slew of genres, such as folk, rock, and country, all of these qualities culminating in a exhilarating and touching record that I still return to to this day. The singles she’s dropped so far see a continuation of these elements into her next era, with “Raising Hell” and “My Own Dance” being dance-pop bangers while “Resentment” shows Kesha’s softer side.
Tumblr media
The Slow Rush by Tame Impala (February 14th): After five years, the wait is finally over! I’d call myself a casual fan of Tame Impala, but even I can’t admit that Kevin Parker and crew know their way around indie rock hooks with a psychedelic spin, (as far as I’m concerned, “The Less I Know The Better” is a modern classic.) Singles such as “Patience” and “Borderline” show that this quality hasn’t lessened in the slightest, while the sprawling soundscape “Posthumous Forgiveness” shows that experimentation is still in store. Also, it’s being released on Valentine’s Day!
Tumblr media
Cape God by Allie X (February 21st): I don’t think I can express how excited I am for this album. I think this is my most anticipated album of 2020 right now. All of the singles released so far been amazing. The eerie synths on “Fresh Laundry” make it the perfect spooky bop, Ms. X and Troye Sivan work great together on “Love Me Wrong", “Rings A Bell” goes OFF with its chorus, and bassline on “Regulars” makes for one killer groove. Not only that, we’re also getting a Mitski feature? I’m calling it for the collaboration of the year. Allie X's discography has been near flawless so far, so let’s just say that I’m hyped. 2020 better be the year she gets the recognition she deserves.
Tumblr media
Notes On A Conditional Form by The 1975 (February 21st): As I’ve mentioned before, I have no expectations going into this album because I have no idea what it’s going to sound like. All the singles so far have been so drastically different, one being a speech set to music, another punk, and another pop. Regardless, they’ve all been good, so I’m not complaining. The 1975 are always dependable when it comes to delivering danceable bops with philosophical tidbits peppered throughout.
Tumblr media
Miss_Anthrop0cene by Grimes (February 21st): How am I going to survive February 21st? I’ve been awaiting a new project from Grimes since falling in love with the sugary hooks, eccentric production, and hellish flair on Art Angels years ago. The singles so far have been a mixed bag, but it looked like we’ll see Grimes tackle themes of technology and artificial intelligence on this album, which is bound to be interesting.
Tumblr media
Masochism by Sky Ferreira (TBA): This is assuming that we’ll even get an album at this point. Has it really been 7 years since Night Time, My Time dropped? Of course I’m kidding, however long Ms. Ferreira takes on this album will be well worth it, and I’m all for artists taking their time to refine their projects. We got some crumbs last year, both with her Charli XCX collab and the lush, baroque pop single “Downhill Lullaby.” I’m willing to patiently wait for whatever this alt-pop songstress will dish out in the coming months.
Tumblr media
Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa (TBA): Dua Lipa was a breath of fresh air in the pop scene of 2017-2018. Her debut album provided not only hit singles that were some of the best on the radio but also great deep cuts that showcased her strength as a vocalist and songwriter. The debut single from this album, “Don’t Start Now,” has been on a loop for me over the past few months, and the melding of past and future aesthetics in her recent videos and music is panning out in a really interesting way. I’ve also heard rumors of Frank Ocean, Miley Cyrus, and Normani possibly being featured on this album, but I don’t have an official source for that, so it’s just speculation, (but can you imagine though?)
Tumblr media
Watching You EP by Robinson (TBA): Robinson is an artist I don’t remember I love until I realize that I’m hours deep into marathoning her music and singing along to every line. She’s got a knack for a catchy hook and fun pop production. “Don’t Say” was one of my favorite songs of 2019, and it’s reported to be a debut single from what will be her first longer project. I’m stoked.
Tumblr media
White Hot Forever by Lana Del Rey (TBA): I’d love to get another Lana album so soon after NFR!, but I have a similar concern about this as I did with thank u, next, that it would end up sounding rushed or not as fleshed out as it could be. Still, NFR! was my favorite Lana record to date, and I’d love to see if she’d continue the aesthetics of that project onto this album or start a completely new thematic and visual cycle. It’s also unclear as to whether this would be her spoken world album that’s also been announced? I guess we’ll just have to see.
Tumblr media
The Archer by Alexandra Savior (TBA): Alexandra Savior won me over with her femme-fatale crooner of a debut, Belladonna of Sadness. The debut single from this album, “Crying All The Time,” is a swooning, fuzzed-out ballad that won me over instantly. This woman knows her way around a sensual vintage aesthetic, I’ll tell you that.
Other artists that have either announced or teased dropping albums this year include HAIM, Dominic Fike, Hailee Steinfeld, Oh Wonder, Lauren Jauregui, The Killers, Noname, Orla Gartland, Normani, Madison Beer, Ava Max, Conan Gray, Donna Missal (!!!) and, (good god, if we are worthy,) Fiona Apple.
It’s still very early in the year, so I’ll likely update this list in the months to come. What albums are you excited for this year? I’m always open to listening to new artists, so make sure to let me know.

Some Thoughts on Music: Personal Preference, Diversity, and Accountability
I first heard of Half Waif when I saw them live opening for Julien Baker in 2017. I’m not usually into electro pop but there was something about this band’s sound that really captivated me. Afterwards, I followed up by looking up their live performances on places like NPR Tiny Desk Concert and Audiotree Live, both of which I also really enjoyed. During this time, though, the band was on the periphery, as I was getting more and more obsessed with Mitski and Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. I saw Half Waif again last night at their headlining show in Los Angeles. This time, Nandi Rose Plunkett performed solo, yet somehow she still managed to fill the stage with her presence. I was so blown away that I bought her album.
This morning, as I was listening to the CD, I was idly scrolling through her Instagram when I spotted a photo of her in a Sari. Wait, what?! I did some Googling and, yup, she’s part-Indian. I had no idea! This revelation filled me with Asian pride. I’m already a huge fan of her music after seeing her live the second time and listening to her album, but that made me love her just that much more.
Then I got to thinking: Is it a bad thing that I like certain artists based on their gender, race, or sexuality? I started listening to Tegan and Sara in the first place because of the novelty of them being lesbian twin sisters; I found out about Thao Nguyen as I was searching for Asian American musical artists. But with Nandi, it was the other way around, I came across her music first, then found out about her cultural identity. I do believe that Thao’s and Tegan and Sara’s bodies of work stand on their own, that I would’ve fallen in love with their music regardless of who they were. But who they were made me fall in love with them, not just as artists, but as people. I think it’s fine to want diversity in the people whose art you consume. Whether explicitly or implicitly, their experiences inform their art. Once I’d found myself rather unwittingly distanced from the music of straight white men, I’d found it kind of refreshing. It’s okay to be drawn to artists who may have shared some of your experiences, as well as artists whose experiences don’t quite mirror your own.
I wrote the following a few months ago, after seeing Thao perform live. At the time, I was reluctant to publish it for some reason. Coincidentally, in the last week or so, some news has come to light regarding Ryan Adams. I’ve never listened to his music, and now I don’t think I ever will. I’m a huge fan of Phoebe Bridgers, so it really puts a face to the issue and brings it into perspective. In light of all this, and my newfound appreciation for Nandi, I thought I should share this now:
For many years, Brand New was one of my most favorite bands. Their albums Deja Entendu and The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me were life-changing for me. I was so drawn to how depressing and self-deprecating their lyrics often were, and how experimental and challenging their sound was. I learned how to play a lot of their songs on guitar. I went to see them once, and even got a t-shirt at their show, which I would wear proudly at school for years until the color faded. I looked up to frontman Jesse Lacey as a musician, both for his vocals and for his songwriting. I never met him, though, but I’d read random accounts online that he wasn’t always the nicest with fans. The ancient beef they once had with Taking Back Sunday, and the fact that they did minimal press and interviews, only added to their alluring mystique. When they announced that their most recent album would be their last, I was heartbroken.
That is, until Jesse Lacey was faced with allegations of sexual harassment.
The band’s silence, which I once thought was cool, now looked like cowardice. Lyrics which once seemed like a guilty fantasy started to sound like a confession. I found that I was no longer able to listen to their music. I took down any covers I had recorded of their songs. I even considered burning the shirt I had of theirs, which would’ve been kind of funny because the image is of a tree on fire. I reacted a similar way when news came out about Louis C.K., Aziz Ansari, and Kevin Spacey. I’d finished Louie (the show) and Master of None, regarding them as some of the best half-hour shows I’d seen, and I was two seasons into House of Cards . Now, any time I see their names and their faces online, I am filled with disgust. I can hardly go through clips of Parks and Recreation anymore, and I loved that show so much. It’s a certain kind of betrayal when someone whose work you’ve looked up to for so long is accused of such horrible things. For a while, I actually believed that you shouldn’t have heroes, because they will fail you.
In my second year of college, I was taking a class on Asian American Fiction, and it opened my eyes to the amount of literature that I was missing out on from people who looked like me and shared my experiences. I figured, if there were so many Asian American authors out there I didn’t know about, surely there were also Asian American musicians I should look out for. And so, through research, I discovered Thao Nguyen. I tried getting into her music, listening to her first album, but was initially put off by her indie/folk sound, as it wasn’t really what I was into at the time. But still, I was thrilled that someone with my last name was making it in the music biz.
Flash forward a few years, and a Mitski song is covered on Adventure Time, one of my favorite shows. I looked into Mitski’s albums and was blown away. I immediately learned every song I could of hers, and I tried getting my friends to join me in recording covers. Through her, I then discovered a bunch of other artists, some of them Asian American, but all of them female. After a while, I figured, I should give Thao Nguyen another shot. So, I did the logical thing (haha) and skipped a few albums, going from her first album straight to her most recent one, and boy was I glad I did so. As obsessed as I am with Mitski, some days the only thing I want to listen to is that new Thao album. From there, I went backwards, listening to her third album, and then her second, and I found that, hey, I like these albums a lot, too. When she tweeted out that she was playing a free show in LA, I made plans right away to go see her.
For the past maybe year and a half, I’ve been listening almost exclusively to female artists, some of them Asian, some of them LGBTQ+. I would like to think that this is me being more open-minded towards the kinds of artists I am drawn to, but at around the same time this was happening, all the stuff with Brand New and Jesse Lacey went down, and for some reason, not only was I unable to listen to Brand New, I also had little interest in listening to new albums from bands I had listened to alongside Brand New, whom I associated with the same era in my life. I’d like to think this, and my current interest in female artists, is more correlation than causation. I don’t want to give him too much credit.
When Thao performed her song “Meticulous Bird” (and I honestly can’t say for sure if this was from a video or from when I saw her live), she dedicated the song to, as she put it, “survivors of all kinds,” and that meant a lot to me, not as someone who’s experienced sexual harassment, but someone who is a human being who knows other human beings who’ve posted the hashtag #metoo on social media. She performed her entire solo set with such passion and energy, it was so captivating to watch. I was very glad that I returned to her older albums, as I was able to recognize more than just songs from A Man Alive. Afterward, I saw that she was taking pictures with fans, so I decided to get in line. When I walked up to her, I told her that I am also Vietnamese American, and that it means so much to me and inspires me greatly that she’s out there making music the way she does. I asked for a picture, and then a hug, and she was so nice and said she really appreciated my comments. From then, I realized, the lesson to learn here isn’t that you shouldn’t have heroes, it’s that if your heroes betray you, find new ones. Find better ones. For every Jesse Lacey out there, there’s also a Thao Nguyen, and when you meet that new hero of yours, they’re going to be awesome.

The flowers that make Chanel No 5
I pulled a 1,500-year-old sword out of a lake ("People on the internet are saying I am the queen of Sweden. I wouldn’t mind being queen for a day, but when I grow up I want to be a vet. Or an actor in Paris.")
FILMS: Phantom Thread was 2018's lushest costume drama, swooniest romance, most giffable comedy, most twisted psychological thriller, and best film. Other very good films this year, in approximate order: Lady Bird ("It's the titular role!"), Beast, Cold War, First Reformed, A Fantastic Woman, Faces Places, Shoplifters | The best thing about moving to Leeds so far was the Leeds Internation Film Festival; my favourites there were Birds of Passage (like if The Godfather was set among the Wayuu people of north Colombia), Shoplifters again, Colette | The two best films I saw this year were the re-release of 2001: A Space Odyssey (if we rank films purely on what cinema can do that other art forms can't, this is perhaps the greatest film of all time) and the re-release of Vertigo (this was about my fourth or fifth time seeing it – first on the big screen – and I think I finally got it). Plus I saw at the Watershed in Bristol (which I miss) Do the Right Thing and The Battle of Algiers, which are both excellent | I went to the cinema 89 times this year, which is roughly 1000% more times than I went last year. General endorsements: Go to the cinema more often. Sit one row closer to the screen than you think you want to. | It's not exactly a film, but I saw about four and a half hours of The Clock (Wikipedia, The New Yorker) at the Tate Modern, and it's completely riveting in an unusual way | The most nail-biting short film of 2018 was this:
Today as I was walking home after my run I saw a large lemon rolling down the hill. It kept rolling for about a quarter mile. And now you can see it, too. pic.twitter.com/dQoHi4RrXS

On printer jams and the people who try to solve them
Conflict theory vs. mistake theory | Grifters vs. grafters
TV: My two favourite series were deliciously good fun on the outside and, in different ways, kind of clever and important on the inside: Killing Eve and A Very English Scandal | I would recommend Stephen, the terrific and harrowing documentary about Stephen Lawrence, his murder, and what came after, but I don't know any way to watch it legally | I know you thought Collateral was bad because it was preachy and obvious, and I don't really have a good counterargument, but I just liked it (although it's no State of Play) | Last Week Tonight
The White Darkness – David Grann writes about Henry Worsley's solo track across the Antarctic

Lauren Collins on the royal family has more delightful sentences than anything else I read this year
In memoriam: Helen Rosner remembers Anthony Bourdain | Zadie Smith remembers Philip Roth

MUSIC: Best album: Chris by Christine and the Queens, with 2012–2017 by Against All Logic and so sad so sexy by Lykke Li as runners-up | Best singles: Nobody by Mitski and Noid by Yves Tumor | Best video/song which I feel bad about recommending because it's actually an advert: Spike Jonze x FKA twigs x Anderson .Paak [above] | Best film soundtracks: Phantom Thread by Jonny Greenwood, A Fantastic Woman by Matthew Herbert, You Were Never Really Here by Jonny Greenwood again, edited highlights from Suspiria by Thom Yorke | My favourite music writing: Rob Sheffield on Radiohead live in New York | a playlist
"I will admit that I am not well. That writing this, right now, I am not well. This will colour the writing. But it is part of why I want to write, because another part of the problem is that we write about it when we are out the other side, better. And I understand: it’s ugly up close; you can see right into the burst vessels of the thing. (Also, on a practical level, it is difficult to write when one is unwell.) But then what we end up with has the substance of secondary sources."
Taffy on Goop
I cried on the train reading this essay by Junot Diaz, but I also believe the people quoted in this story | Asia Argento's speech at Cannes was just one minute long and took my breath away, but there's also this story
Tumblr media
PODCASTS: Slate's Culture Gabfest – for example, on the dad joke [36:15] | Adam Buxton interviewing Paul Thomas Anderson is very good because no one else would dare open with "The reason I liked There Will Be Blood so much is that Daniel Day Lewis used a funny voice" | This American Life: Five Women, on libraries | Unpopped on Come Dine With Me | The New Yorker Radio Hour: an hour on Phillip Roth, 15 minutes weeding with Parker Posey | The BBC's radio adaptation of Lucy Prebble's play The Effect, although I can't find it online anywhere | Reply All: Negative Mount Pleasant | You don't need me to tell you whether you want to listen to Stephen Fry on No Such Thing as a Fish or would rather gnaw your own arm off
Six Glimpses of the Past by Janet Malcolm (although perhaps you have to be a pre-existing Malcolm fan for this one)
Cat Power is my favorite musical artist named after two kinds of nap.
— Lauren O'Neal (@laureneoneal) April 5, 2018
SPORT: I took the day off work to watch Stage 19 of the Giro d'Italia, which turned out to be a good decision | It seems like another lifetime, but apparently England v Colombia in the World Cup was only six months ago
I have no idea if it's fair, but this pan of Jill Soloway's book by Andrea Long Chu is a dark delight
OLD THINGS I CAME ACROSS THIS YEAR: Kate Bush's The Dreaming is so good that it's definitely in the top four Kate Bush albums | Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion, which I preferred to her more famous nonfiction | Consider the Weasel is, sadly, not the title of this Annie Dillard essay | The original pre-release version of Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks (Alex Ross, Spotify)

2016 Year End Album List
The year is officially over now so here are my top 20 albums of 2016.  It was a great year for music and my list has a lot of stuff that has already been talked about but still I gotta do a list! If you’re reading this thank you. I’m mostly making this for myself but I hope you all enjoy.
20. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - EARS  I kept seeing Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s name pop up on pitchfork and I never listened to her because I thought I would be listening to long droney ambient pieces (which I like but I was never in the mood for this year). But I listened to this one a few weeks back and I’m glad I did because this album is ALIVE.
19. Frank Ocean - Blonde This album is good but I don’t think it really lived up to the hype? It’s probably just me honestly. Like it’s a great album but I feel like I’m not really relating to it so that’s why it’s not higher on the list. Plus I hate it when “Facebook Story” comes up on shuffle
18. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool Also kind of overrated. But it’s still a Radiohead album. Like it meets that standard. It’s better than King of Limbs. Let’s move on.
17. Chairlift - Moth Chairlift really stepped it up this year. I saw them open for someone years ago and getting really bored. When I saw them tour behind this album this year it was like a completely different band. I can’t help but thinking that working with Beyoncé gave them the confidence to bring it like they did on this album. Too bad they broke up.
16. A Tribe Called Quest - We got it from Here…Thank You 4 Your service Some of this album’s success I think might have to do with timing. The political messages on a lot of these songs hit harder in the wake of the election. But most of this album’s success comes from how these guys can still make their sound work after like 25 years. 15. Leon Vynehall - Rojus (Designed To Dance) I don’t know a lot about house music so I think it makes sense that I would be into a house music concept album about birds.
14. Kvelertak - Nattesferd I didn’t hear very much good metal in 2016. I wasn’t really seeking out dark music as much because the world seemed dark enough already. But this album filled my need for heavier music without being too gloomy. Kvelertak (I do NOT know to pronounce their name) blend a lot of more older rock and metal styles together here to get a kind of unique black metal party vibe??? I don’t know it works for me
13. Blood Orange - Freetown Sound This album captures a lot of what made music so great this year. Warm sounding nostalgic songs with strong political messages. This album has a lot going on in it and sometimes it feels like musical ideas are dropped before they’re really complete. But at it’s best this album is some of my favorite music I heard all year. Also my dad liked it
12. The Avalanches - Wildflower This album doesn’t achieve the same classic album status as Since I Left You but it’s still nice to visit the Avalanches’ world again. In the summer I would make breakfast while listening to this album so I guess it probably helps that I associate it with eggs.
11. Young Thug - No, My Name is JEFFEREY This is the first time where I’ve liked an entire Young Thug mixtape. Usually he’s working at a level that’s beyond my level of comprehension and that’s how he loses me. This is definitely an easier listen overall compared to his previous work, and while he’s still rapping from another plane of existence it feels like I’m hearing it from a more comfortable place.
10. Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion Side B/Emotion Emotion Side B is really good in it’s own right but Emotion felt as much like an album from this year as it was from last year. It’s an album for every year. A timeless classic. When the world ends in nuclear holocaust (soon) I hope this music survives.
9. Nicolas Jaar - Sirens It took me a while to get into Nicolas Jaar because there were so many sides to his music. Every time I tried to get into him I’d hear something different and it would change my perception of him drastically. This album is a good blend of all the things I’ve heard from him and it comes together to make something really unique and different.
8. Jamila Woods - HEAVN I was really surprised to not see ANYONE talking about this album outside of music publications. If you liked Solange’s album and haven’t heard this please listen to it!
7. Xenia Rubinos - Black Terry Cat THIS ONE TOO I DIDN’T SEE ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THIS ALBUM!! I LITERALLY HAD TO HEAR ABOUT THIS ONE FROM READING THE FUCKING “OVERLOOKED ALBUMS 2016” THING ON PITCHFORK. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR WITH THIS ONE PLEASE
6. White Lung - Paradise White Lung took their sound into Warped Tour Compilation 2004-2006 realms on this one and it pays off big time. Mosh pit anthems for adults. 5. Beyoncé - Lemonade To say that the release of Lemonade was a major cultural moment is an understatement. For weeks it was all I listened to and all I wanted to talk about. And after the all the hype, articles about if the album’s narrative was true or not and whether or not it mattered, and buying a $40 Boycott Beyoncé t shirt I wore myself on Beyoncé. But even after seriously overdoing it with this album you can’t deny it’s impact.
4. Mitski - Puberty 2 Aside from being my favorite title for an album in recent memory this album makes me feel like I am dead and empty but happy at the same time.
3. Solange - A Seat at the Table I think this is the most relevant album to come out this year. There’s not a lot I can really add to the discussion about it but I really do think it’s an album everyone needed this year.
2. Bon Iver - 22, a million Trust me I do feel bad placing Bonny Bear above Solange but this album was so fucking cool. Like he went full on fucking WEIRD on this one. It’s like Kid A but from Wisconsin. Lyrically I think this album is about…nothing??? But musically this album feels huge
1. Chance the Rapper - Coloring Book This one got me through the hell year. I don’t even think it was the best album this year objectively (Juke Jam ft. Justin Bieber for most skipped song of my life) but as the world grew scarier and scarier this past year the more I clung to this music. I used to be put off by Chance’s unrelenting positivity but this year I needed it and it seriously helped me so much. I think my favorite thing about this record is how all the guest features are brought into Chance’s world. Future makes some of the darkest sounding rap music today but on Smoke Break he shines as bright as Chance. I have loved watching this guy succeed all year. Give him the Grammy.
HONORABLE MENTION: Kanye This was a truly difficult year to be a Kanye fan. I loved TLOP when it first came out but as time went on I liked it less and less. Some of it has to do with Kanye’s actions testing me as a fan but most of it has to do with the fact that this is his weakest album. His genius still shines throughout it, but it just feels like he didn’t give a shit about this one. He starts off so strong with Ultralight Beam (which is honestly a Chance the Rapper song like it plays more into what Chance put out later in the year than the rest of TLOP) but by the next song he is giving us the bleached asshole line. Kanye has never been the best rap lyricist by any means but with the rest of the album feeling so thrown together it’s working against him more than before. While it’s interesting how the album falling apart (intentionally?) mirrors Kanye’s public persona also falling apart this album just doesnt sit right with me anymore. Hope he’s okay.
