I spent 3-4 hours decoding and translating Pnakotic into English.
I'll be drawing up a translation key later tonight, but I'm missing B, J, Q and Z.
I am now mentally exhausted and incredibly proud.

Willow Month 2023: Day 3 - Favorite Episode This is a tough call for me, because it's very close. I love Episode 7: Across the Shattered Sea because it has so much gorgeous character development for everyone and so much beautiful scenery, but Episode 4: Whispers of Nockmaar just barely shades it. I think it's the whump. This ep is basically 45 minutes of whumping on poor Graydon and.... he suffers beautifully.
Tumblr media
This poor kid starts off the ep infected with dark magic. He and the group both know it will eventually corrupt his entire system, cause him to become possessed and try to kill everyone, and they will have to kill him. And they spend the first part of the episode chaining him up and not doing anything about it, except Elora comforting him.
Tumblr media
They finally decide to do something and this leads to him restrained even more, splayed out on some kind of bench. He spends a lot of time writhing and moaning in pain. They tear his shirt open while he gasps, exposing horrific scarring he feels deeply ashamed of and doesn't want to talk about, while he sweats and groans even more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then they throw a bucket of liquid on him while he writhes around some more and it's obviously painful and I should probably just acknowledge it's not just the whump I love in this episode? They did NOT have to make this whole thing so BDSM but they really did, god bless them. Plus lovely grace notes in the script referring to him being ravaged and also reamed -_-
Tumblr media
ANYWAY we go on from here to his having hallucinations about his painful past, then the possession really starts to set in and he gets aggressive, then starts talking in the voices of loved ones to scare and distract people. Then we have a break in the action and when we get back to Graydon...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
well. all right then. Spoiler, he's fully possessed here but acting like he's not. You can tell because they flat-ironed his hair! Lol, but also he's uncharacteristically comfortable with his exposed flesh and touching other people which seems like a nice, subtle hint.
Tumblr media
Trust me, Graydon in his right mind is never leaving that many buttons unbuttoned. He leads Elora up to the tower so he can complete the banishment ritual Bavmorda was trying to do to baby Elora at the end of the movie, but then everyone else shows up and he gets whumped on some more...
Tumblr media
Literally I would die, as an actor, if I had Erin and Ruby holding me down and Amar crawling on top of me and pretending to pummel me but like. That's the biz, I guess?
Tumblr media
At any rate, Kit convinces Elora that she is magic enough to fix this, so she goes and almost-but-not-quite kisses him (she does call it a kiss later) and sucks the evil out of him. He tells her he never doubted her, and the boy is clearly smitten after that
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Elora had a vision of him shoving his brother out of a tree when he was possessed as a child and feels like he might be sketchy. So he's giving her a big smitten smile when they leave....
Tumblr media
(credit to willowgifsdaily for this gif)
...but that smile starts to falter bc she's giving him this look in return, yikes
Tumblr media
Anyway, that was good wholesome fun for the whole family and kudos to Disney+ for realizing they needed to put in a bondage-themed whumpfest to really sell me on the show! And kudos once again to my boy Tony Revolori, who sells every inch of this episode just amazingly. The emotional range is all over the place and there's no part where he falters in just performing the absolute shit out of this one. This episode changed my brain chemistry forever, I think. And that is why Whispers of Nockmaar is my favorite episode of WIllow! Send help!

Reactions while re-watching Willow: Episode 4 “The Whispers of Nockmaar”
Warning: spoilers ahead.
~ Having an entire episode where characters are trapped in a location, especially a haunted castle, is so symbolic and fascinating. St. Teresa of Avila compared the soul to a castle, and that kind of symbolism is also used in stories like “Beauty and the Beast.” The characters are forced to face aspects of their history and identity as they go through the different rooms.
~ This episode provides a lot of backstory, worldbuilding, and connective tissue between the movie and the series.
~ Didn’t Ballantine and the other soldiers survive mortal wounds because of their possession? If so, why are they talking about killing Graydon?
Tumblr media
~ I think this is the first time anyone mentions the Wyrm’s vermiscous goo. It’s so quick it’s easy to miss. So that was what went into Ballantine and Graydon when they were wounded? That tracks with how it is eventually shown.
~ Naming a specific forbidden place/action is classic fairy tale setup.
~ “I hope you never have to” = foreshadowing of Kit having to fight Airk in the finale
~ Bavmorda’s promises sound like the baptismal promises made at Easter
~ Kit lighting the tapestry on fire ties in with the Wyrm’s fire imagery
Tumblr media
~ When Boorman talks about his partner dying, does he mean Madmartigan? I didn’t catch on to that the first time I saw it.
~ I appreciate Elora talking about the woodcutters and still feeling guilty about them. She seemed to get over it a little too quickly in the previous episode.
~ Elora following a mysterious voice to a dark part of the castle is very much like Sleeping Beauty.
~ Why did Willow leave Graydon unattended? Did Graydon/the Lich fight or frighten him?
~ There is a lot of ambiguity about whether the things the characters see and hear are real, their imagination, an effect of the castle, or the action of the Crone. Airk speaking through Graydon could be real, as he is shown coming out of a cell at the end of the episode. But Mims’ voice seems like an attempt by the Crone to drive a wedge between Elora and Willow.
~ Is that General Kael’s skeleton mask on the ground when they’re leaving the castle?

Since there’s an 85% chance I’m thinking about Willow at any given time, I have some more Willow thoughts.
Mainly, why does no one check in with Kit about her brother?
I know that the purpose of The Quest shifts with the discovery of Elora, but it's still ostensibly about saving Airk, and his twin is right there, consumed with worry and guilt about the whole thing, and every time she expresses it she's treated like she's throwing a tantrum.
The Gales
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's tremendous guilt here, where Kit has said something rash and now regrets it, a common theme for her. The apology here is fascinating, because what exactly is she apologizing for? Not protecting her brother? Not being the one taken? Not cherishing her family enough? For behaving badly? Whatever it is, it hurts the heart.
The High Aldwin
As soon as Kit sees the clusterfuck that is the finger test and watches Elora "fail" it, she's out the door, insistent on continuing The Quest because now that Willow has given them a direction she won't let anything stop her. She'll go alone if she has to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rest of the party catches up (Kit didn't really want to go alone, or at least not without Jade) and suddenly they have an extremely slow wagon and they've added several members to the party and are taking breaks in the middle of the day for magic lessons-- all things that will slow them down considerably.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As an aside, because this could really be its own whole post, I feel like one of the roots of disconnect between Kit and Jade is that Jade has never taken Kit seriously. Not as a swordsman or adventurer, not as a princess or leader, not even as a real potential love interest. It's not until the edge of the Shattered Sea where Jade finally tells Kit that she'll trust Kit's judgment and doesn't drag her away from the waterfall jump that she learns to have faith. If part of Kit's journey is about learning to believe in Elora, part of Jade's journey is learning to believe in Kit.
The Whispers of Nockmaar
With the knowledge they have at the time, Kit makes the realistic call about Graydon, one that Jade and Boorman agree with (of course not in the moment, don't get me started on that...) and her reasoning remains her brother-- they don't have time to wait for Graydon to turn, to keep him chained up and drag him with, and to inevitably get shanked by him. They've just watched several allies be killed by possessed people, and so far Willow hasn't given them any reason to hope that it can be reversed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even with Willow's dodgy faith in the purgation ritual, Kit does throw herself into the process. Then they get partway through and start to hear Airk's voice and Kit loses it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She fully books it out of the throne room, because this is legit awful.
When Elora goes out to the hallway after her own emotional moment, the two share an aggressive greeting that Kit immediately backs off from.
Tumblr media
It should be mentioned that the conversation shifts to Elora's fears about things, and Kit is about to tell her about the eckleberry bush before Elora bounces.
Beyond the Shattered Sea
There's a lot going on in this episode, internally with Kit and externally in her relationship with Elora. They hear the old paladin of Cashmere's story about wandering the Shattered Sea for years and eventually murdering all his companions and Elora says that it doesn't matter, they'll find the city. To Kit this must look like more baseless faith-- faith she hasn't yet learned to have in Elora.
She's just lost her dad again, lost a substitute father figure, the other father figure she has on The Quest has betrayed her trust, and she's desperate to not lose Airk too. She is still deeply conscious of how little time they have, how little time her twin has.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should be mentioned that they are too late when they reach the Immemorial City! Airk has been corrupted, Kit might have needed to kill him in order to save Elora, they did fail in a meaningful way!
I know we're limited by episode length, and how everyone in the party is perpetually semi-annoyed by Kit, but Kit actually checks in with the party quite a bit! She has a moment with Graydon where she apologizes and gets to know him, she checks in with Jade after Ballantine's death, asks Jade how she's feeling about the whole Bone Reaver family thing, she has three conversations with Elora where the focus is on giving her confidence in herself, she checks in on Willow's emotional health for god's sake.
I just desperately wanted someone to pull this kid aside and say "hey, you good?"
Because she's definitely not.
