Simple and well done: The succes of Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen by the mangaka Gege Akutami is one of the most popular shonen series at these times, being the second most selled manga between 2020 and 2021 with 23,797,483 copies in Japan. Since its debut in 5th March of 2018 has been a total success, to the point it's really hard not knowing someone who like this serie or have seen one of the anime scenes. Here I'll try to explain from my own point of view as a fan of this manga why it is so popular (of course, i could be wrong).

In the first place, I think that a story doesnt have to be too deep or complex to be good. In fact, most of the time when we search for an entertainment product as it is anime and manga, we are looking for something to relax or just waste time, so not everything have to make us questioning the life and death, politics, or whatever . JJK story is very simple (at first) but yet fascinating. The world where everything take place is well constructed and the narrative is easy to follow, so you dont have to take your brain off to understand what's happening while you discover it little by little. Also, as the main team is comformed by young characters, there's always dumb situations, making us laugh or smile a little in these hard times. You can also find great and important messages as painful (really painful) situations.

Talking about the characters, JJK is characterized for having a bunch of personalities pretty well stablishied with distinguable desing (not gonna lie, all of them are beautiful af). The diversity of perspectives can make the public feel more conected to the story even if in our world cursed spirits dont exist. For example, with the little screen time Mai Zenin has, you can easily understand she's the type of person who doesnt feel strong enough to fight with something that is making her bad, and would prefer living a simpler life. In my opinion, this kind of realistic personalities are relatable and makes the story even better. I'm not gonna talk about women representation tho; it is not the best but also it's not bad (recent manga events could convice me otherwise). I think that JJK women representation must be the minimun standar for any serie.

On the other hand, the anime adaptation added a lot of awesome aspect as are the voice actors, the music, and the funny jujutsu strolls at the end of the chapter (i know they already exist in manga but adding to the anime is a nice detail). However, the quality of the fight scenes are on other level. Mappa studio did a really good job animating these complex scenes that in the manga are iconic but not always too clear in the mangaka drawing style. The first ending "Lost Paradise" also became pretty popular in its own and attracted more people to watch the anime.

Finally, with the pandemic the number of anime and manga fans in general has increased with the necessity of wasting time inside of our houses, and since JJK anime was aired during 2020-2021, it was one of the popular recommendation. Of course, social media potentiated this with all the content created by the large fandom it has around the world. But before that JJK was already a famous franchise of this manga generation in Japan, what probably lead to its kinda early anime adaptation.

If you haven't see or read this serie i hardly recommended cause it's very entertainment and funny. As I said, it's a really great story even with the simple plot. So, definitely, you're not gonna lose your time.
