The Center for Biological Diversity and Maricopa Audubon Society sued the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service today for failing to protect habitat for the endangered Southwestern willow flycatcher and Western yellow-billed cuckoo from cattle grazing damage along Arizona’s Gila River.
“This lawsuit will force federal agencies to follow their own rules and finally protect the Gila River’s fragile endangered species habitat from destructive livestock grazing,” said Taylor McKinnon, Southwest program director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Livestock grazing decimates the streams that struggling species depend on and these federal agencies have repeatedly failed to protect endangered species habitat. This has to end before more wildlife slides into extinction.”
Today’s lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Tucson, targets seven grazing allotments spanning 15 miles of the river downstream from Coolidge Dam.
Field surveys in 2022 and 2023 documented open gates, downed fences, unauthorized cattle and extensive damage to the Gila River’s riparian vegetation, where up to 92% of the surveyed critical habitat for the cuckoo and flycatcher was significantly damaged by livestock grazing. The Center filed two notices of intent to sue the agencies following the surveys but grazing continued.

Saguaro National Park The saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea), with its spiny, branching arms, is an icon of the American West. It is also the largest cactus in the United States, growing up to 60 feet (18 meters) tall. The saguaro only grows in the Sonoran Desert, with its habitat range limited to southern Arizona, southeast California, and western Sonora, Mexico. Although not listed as threatened or endangered, the saguaro is protected by state laws against harvesting or destruction. Saguaro National Park, shown in these two natural-color images acquired on September 21, 2021, by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8, was founded to protect the iconic species. The park covers about 145 square miles (37,000 hectares) of the Sonoran Desert around Tucson, Arizona. It is split into two sections: the eastern Rincon Mountain District, bordered by the Coronado National Forest, and the western Tucson Mountain District, which is shown in the closeup image. The western district formerly held 137 mining sites where copper, lead, silver, and molybdenum were mined from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. In 1933, Saguaro was established as a national monument. It became a national park in 1994. Today, the area around the western district is dotted with neighborhoods. Under the right conditions, saguaro cacti can live to be 150 to 200 years old. The extremely slow-growing saguaro is particularly sensitive to temperature range and water abundance, and highly variable or extreme weather can stress the plants and limit reproduction. In Saguaro National Park, scientists have long monitored the climate. Over the past century, winter minimum temperatures in the area have risen 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit (6 to 8 degrees Celsius). Researchers have also recorded less rain falling in the winter, but more in the summer, when the cacti are thought to take up most of their water. When rain is abundant, a fully hydrated saguaro can weigh 3,200 to 4,800 pounds (1,500 to 2,200 kilograms). However, due to drought over the past few decades, fewer young saguaros are surviving in the park. Ecologists are looking for new tools to help monitor plant populations, and some are training computers to identify plants in remotely sensed images, either aerial or satellite. Some recent studies have used such machine learning to survey and map populations of saguaro, which cast shadows that can be identified in imagery. The researchers suggest such tools could be especially useful for monitoring remote, arid environments. 2019 elections GOP Win
1. Of all places, Democrats suffered a notable setback in New Jersey Tuesday as Republicans prevailed in battleground legislative districts in the southern part of the state. Although Democrats will not lose their majority in Trenton, experts predict they could lose more than half a dozen seats as mail-in ballots are counted. In District 1, State Sen. Bob Andrzejczak lost his reelection bid Tuesday to Republican challenger Mike Testa in one of the key races in South Jersey. With unofficial results showing Testa with a six-percentage-point lead, the Democratic incumbent conceded the race for the 1st District, according to Sam Rivers, a campaign manager for local Democrats. In the same district, which covers Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland Counties, Democratic incumbents Bruce Land and Matthew Milam conceded their Assembly race to Republican challengers Erik Simonsen and Antwan McClellan. Unofficial results showed Simonsen and McClellan leading by a four-point margin late Tuesday. In South Jersey’s other hotly contested race, for Assembly in the 8th District, which spans most of Burlington County and parts of Atlantic and Camden Counties, Democratic candidates Gina LaPlaca and Mark Natale conceded to Republican candidates Ryan Peters and Jean Stanfield.
2. Although Democrats ran up big margins in Philadelphia's longtime Republican suburbs, the GOP made major inroads into the western part of the Keystone State. Voters in Washington County, compromising suburban Pittsburgh, gave Republicans a majority on the board of commissioners, for the first time this century.  Cambria County, a longtime Democratic stronghold where Lyndon Johnson beat Barry Goldwater by more than 35 points saw Republican candidates win three countywide races and notch a rare win on the Johnstown City Council.
3. Daniel Cameron made two major firsts in the race for Kentucky Attorney General. He is the first Republican to win the seat in 70 years and he is the state's first African American attorney general. Although Republican Governor Matt Bevin apparently lost the race for governor, his defeat to a member of Kentucky's most well-known political family (the Beshears) and an unpopular first term in office filled with unforced errors was not unexpected, even if it is disappointing. But Kentucky Republicans can hold their heads high having won five of the six statewide elected offices.
4. Mississippi may be dark red, but Democrats remain more competitive at the state level thanks to a large African American population and running moderate candidates. In the governor's race, the Democrat, outgoing Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, was the best candidate the party could have hoped for. Hood is not only pro-life and pro-gun, but he had also won statewide elections four times, something that has become increasingly rare for Democrats in the Deep South. But on Tuesday Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves won the race for governor by nearly six points. Republicans swept all eight statewide races for the first time since reconstruction, including the races for lieutenant governor, attorney general, and secretary of state. Despite already having a supermajority in both legislative chambers, the GOP picked up three seats in the state Senate. Per the Mississippi Clarion Ledger:"We won it all, didn't we?" a jubilant outgoing Republican Gov. Phil Bryant told a crowd at an election-night party for Gov.-elect Tate Reeves and other statewide winners in Jackson. "They even brought in Obama ... We made America great again." Despite making a red state even redder we don't expect the mainstream media to pick up this story. Help us make it go viral!
5. The Republican Party didn't just win a few elections this past Tuesday, it also has prevailed in hard-fought contests throughout 2019. In Louisiana, Republicans secured a supermajority in the State Senate and came within seven seats of doing so in the State House. GOP candidates running against Governor John Bel Edwards (D) won 52 percent of the vote combined, giving the Republican nominee a strong chance at winning the November 16 runoff. If the GOP secures a trifecta, it would control all levers of power in Baton Rouge during the next round of redistricting. In North Carolina, the GOP took home another big win as Dan Bishop prevailed in a highly contested special election to represent North Carolina's suburban 9th District. Arguably the most surprising conservative victory this year came in Arizona where voters in the liberal city of Tucson rejected becoming a sanctuary city by a significant margin.

Redwood National Park! Redwood National Park is known for having some of the tallest trees in the world, but it also features oak woodlands, riverways, and coastlines that support a diverse suite of birds. As the park’s climate changes, many of the birds that we commonly see here are likely to fight suitable climate, such as the Great-Horned Owls and other owl species. But the warming climate will likely challenge other birds, including many warbler species that occur in the park, including Nashville, MacGillivray’s, Yellow-rumped, and Townsends Warblers. The park’s climate is projected to worsen for woodpecker species also, including Acorn, Red-bellied Sapsucker, Downy, and Hairy. It is recommended that managers help these and other species by emphasizing habitat restoration and reducing other stressors.

It is recommended that managers help these and other species by emphasizing habitat restoration and reducing other stressors.
Tumblr media
Saguaro National Park! Saguaro National Park’s two districts outside of Tucson, Arizona are characterized by water features, pine forests, and mountains to the east and protected desert vegetation to the west. Each side of the park is part of its own Important Bird Area—each a diverse ecosystem that supports the desert’s roadrunners, woodpeckers, and quails. As the climate changes, dozens of species could be extirpated from the park or face worsening conditions. These include Harris’s Hawk, Mexican Spotted Owl, and various wren species. It is recommended that park managers emphasize protecting existing habitats and reducing the effects of nonnative species.
Tumblr media
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks! California's Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are side by side in one of the most dramatic landscapes in the United States, home to deep forests housing the world’s largest trees. The park’s climate may worsen for Steller’s Jays and Clark’s Nutcrackers in the drier seasons to come. However, it might remain suitable for most neotropical migrants in the park, particularly warblers, such as MacGillivray's, Wilson’s, Yellow, and Common Yellowthroat. Key to maintaining bird species in these changing conditions will be preserving habitat and reducing impacts from disturbance and nonnative species
Tumblr media
Shenandoah National Park! Forests of various types cover 95 percent of Virginia's Shenandoah National Park, and they invite a variety of birds to visit year-round—whether they breed in summer, migrate through in spring and fall, or spend the winter. As forests warm, a number of birds who breed in Shenandoah at the southern end of their range, including thrushes and warblers, might cease finding suitable climate in the park. In winter, though, the park’s climate may become suitable for 43 species, which could colonize the park. These include 11 birds, like the Common Yellowthroat and Orange-crowned Warbler, that currently breed or migrate through Shenandoah, and may choose to spend the winter, too.
Tumblr media
Theodore Roosevelt National Park! Widely known for large mammals, such as bison, elk, and big-horned sheep, North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park, boasts much broader biodiversity. The park can be broken down into four ecosystems—flood plains, forest, prairie/grassland, and rivers/streams—and each ecosystem hosts various birds based on the resources they provide during a particular season. Some birds call this park home year-round, such as Golden Eagles, White-breasted Nuthatches, and Great-horned Owls, which are typically found in the forested areas on the flood plain. In the spring and fall seasons, birds like White-throated Sparrows, Sandhill Cranes, and White Pelicans are found around the Little Missouri River.
Tumblr media
Voyageurs National Park! Minnesota is one of the fastest warming states in the U.S. Its winters are becoming milder and its snowfall less consistent—and this is especially true in boreal forests like those in Voyageurs National Park. The park’s climate is likely to improve for dozens of bird species which may colonize the park from the south in summer or winter. However, Minnesota’s iconic Common Loon may find less suitable climate in the park by 2050, while other bird species could be extirpated, like Red-breasted Mergansers, Hairy Woodpeckers, Gray Jays, and a number of charismatic warblers. Park managers should track bird populations to determine priority areas for habitat management within the park.
Tumblr media
Wind Cave National Park! America’s eighth national park, which gets its name from the sound of wind whistling through a cave opening, is located in southwestern South Dakota. The park splits into three ecosystems: ponderosa pine/aspen forests, riparian woodlands, and a mixed-grass prairie. Meadowlarks and bluebirds live on the mixed-grass prairie, while Black-backed Woodpeckers, Ovenbirds, and tanagers live in the forests.
Tumblr media
Wrangell St. Elias National Park ad Preserve! Wrangell St. Elias, America’s largest national park, is home to four major mountain ranges, the second highest peak in the U.S., one of largest active volcanoes in North America, and massive glaciers. The park’s climate could become less suitable for 32 bird species by 2050, for instance the Say’s Phoebe and Smith’s Longspur; the latter could be extirpated in the park over the coming decades. Meanwhile, the park’s climate could become more suitable for 42 species, such as the Sharp-tailed Grouse and the Red-breasted Nuthatch. It is recommended that park managers focus on monitoring programs to identify changes in bird communities.
Tumblr media
Yellowstone National Park! Yellowstone National Park is currently home to a plethora of songbird species that nest on willows growing alongside western rivers. Suitable climate is projected to persist for several of these riparian songbirds, such as the Yellow Warbler, Song Sparrow, and Willow Flycatcher, a priority species for the park. But it may grow too dry and hot for others, such as Wilson’s Warbler, Warbling Vireo, and Lincoln’s Sparrow. Because these species are willow-dependent, park managers can continue to protect natural systems—including supporting large carnivores and beavers, both of which promote healthy streamside willows beneficial to riparian songbirds.

Here are some designs in my world.

This is the Spain style church called Mission San xavier del bac which is the oldest spainish style mission in the country with it’s unique intricate work and it’s baroque style of planning on the inside. It is located by Tucson, Arizona.
2.

This is a south-western style of industrial designed for a small retail space like mineral and gem world which is located in Tucson, Arizona.
3.

This style shown above is the international style of industrial design which is located in Milwaukee by the MAM or Milwaukee Art Museum.
4.

Pictured above is contemporary styled architecture located at the entrance to the exhibits in the Milwaukee Art Museum.
5.
Tumblr media
The style to the right and left in this picture are both Modern styled architecture located in  Historic Pabst Neighborhood.
6.
Tumblr media
This picture above is the State Capitol of Wisconsin. An interesting fact is that when building the state capitol they used two styles which are the Neoclassical and Beaux-Arts Architecture.
7.
Tumblr media
In the historic third-ward district of Milwaukee the architecture styling that they used was Italianate style architecture.
8. Walking around in Tucson, Arizona and the neighborhoods you see a lot of Spanish, Mexican, and South-western styling of architecture. For instance the one that stands out the most is the Mediterranean Revival style of Architecture since it so dry and hot all year round that is the only style of architecture that with stands everything in this area of the United States.  9. Second to last place a walked around before i boarded the plane to Arizona was my hometown called Greenville which is located near Appleton and the ATW or Appleton International Airport. In the suburbs of Greenville you will mostly see Colonial style, Modern industrial design cookie cutter houses and mid-century style housing.
10. The last place i walked around was Chicago, IL which is home to the Frank Lloyd wright style architecture, the International industrial skyscraper style, the victorian style, the colonial style, etc. . Chicago is home to a hodgepodge of different architectural styles coming together to make Chicago the most well-known city in the North America today.

Florence Miller Pierce: In the Light
 September 5 – September 30, 2014
A survey exhibition of work by Florence Miller Pierce (1918-2007) will open at Charlotte Jackson Fine Art on September 5 and extend to September 30, with an opening reception on Friday, September 5 from 5-7 p.m. at the gallery, which is located at 554 S. Guadalupe in the Railyard Art District.
Light in all its guises and subtleties--bright or fleeting, lustrous or dim, the éclat of a spark or the smolder of a color from the depths—this is the subject matter Florence Miller Pierce has come to be known for in her art. A survey of work from across several decades, In the Light will include numerous permutations of this fascination with light—including works from the late 1960’s through the early 2000’s.
Born in 1918 in Washington, D.C., Miller Pierce’s interest in art began at an early age.  She studied with a private tutor, May Ashton, at fifteen.  It was Ashton who introduced Miller Pierce to The Phillips Collection, considered the first museum of Modern Art in America.  Later she studied at the studio school there.  At the tender age of eighteen, Miller Pierce set out for Taos, New Mexico to study art with Emil Bisttram.  Influenced by the Transcendentalism, Theosophy, and Kandinsky’s seminal Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Miller Pierce found herself in a heady atmosphere that nevertheless did not stint on physical discipline.  Students were expected to maintain the studio, stoke the woodstove, and to work eight hours a day.  Miller Pierce, along with her husband Horace Pierce, briefly joined Bisttram and Raymond Jonson’s famous Transcendental Painters Group.  Miller Pierce was one of only two women (the other was Agnes Pelton) in the group, and by far the youngest member.
Miller Pierce’s early work was primarily organic geometric forms in paint on canvas.  Even in what survives of these early works, with their luminous and light-tinted depths, Miller Pierce’s interest in light can be seen.  Later, Miller Pierce went on to work with ink on rice paper and to sculpt in stone and balsa wood.  These pieces retain the organic and geometric forms of those early years, and they are infused with a gravity and totemic quality which resonates on a visceral level.
However, the work which Miller Pierce is perhaps best known for her resin pieces—a medium which she discovered by accident.  Pouring resin in her studio one day, she spilled a few drops onto a piece of foil.  She was fascinated by the play of light within the resin.  This discovery led to years of trial and refinement as she continually developed new methods of pouring and shaping resin onto mirrored Plexiglas.  Her fascination with geometric forms continued.  Many of the resin works from the 1980’s include sculptural forms—triangles, fans, lozenges, circles.  She also developed multiple ways to manipulate the surface of the pieces—creating matte or gloss finishes, and smooth, stippled, or even folded surfaces. The elegant white pieces were Miller Pierce’s own favorites—with their quiet and meditative quality and subtle play of light.  The color works are like gems in which the brilliant range of tones, from black-blues to cool purples to deep pinks become infused with an almost living luminescence.
There has been a recent resurgence of interest in Miller Pierce’s work.  She has been selected for inclusion this summer in the SITE Santa Fe Biennial and in the Western Light, Ecstatic Landscapes exhibition at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in California.  In addition, in 2015, Miller Pierce will be honored with a Survey Exhibition at the Harwood Museum.  Miller Pierce’s work has been included in prestigious collections and exhibitions around the world, including The Corcoran, The Albright-Knox, The New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts, The Tucson Museum of Art, The Sasebo Museum in Japan, and The Phillips Collection.
In the Light will offer viewers the opportunity to see a selection of Miller Pierce’s work in juxtaposition.  Whether a square window of brilliant color or a luminous white sculptural form—each piece will draw the viewer into the contemplation of light.
