Second City, chp. 2

Betty is a basic bitch and I’m not sorry.

This fic is quickly spiralling into a love letter to my favorite city. I’m not sorry about that either.

Also, let’s pretend Jughead and Jellybean are slightly more than six years apart, like eight, or even ten. That would make my underachieving ass feel better.

In which Betty Cooper is a stereotypical millennial who can’t make a phone call

It has been three weeks since Jughead drove her home, stroked her arm, and called her Betts.

She is on her third re-read of The Final Fissure. Her airport copy is now nearly as worn and marked as her hardcover from the first print run.

She could never read it through just once. Each time she picked it up, she went through at least three re-reads. Pencil sketched out her initial thoughts. Blue pen compared Betty’s memories, her knowledge of the case notes, to Jughead’s narration. Green pen underlined the phrases and passages that made her want to weep and shake Jughead. To ask him how he strung together phrases that swept through her like fire, that absolved like the sea. Green pen underlined the places that laid bare the relationship between the man who’d written the words and the boy who’d lived them. The green pen underlined the places where he’d laid her bare.

She is reading on her lunch break, green pen tucked behind her ear, when Cynthia walks in.

“Aren’t you kind of behind the times? That came out over two years ago.”

“Oh I’ve read it before.” She sets the book down and moves the pen to the spine to mark her place. Cynthia sees her annotations. “Jeez, you in a book club or something?”

“What? Oh no, I just went to high school with him.”

“Him. You went to high school with FP Jones III.” She picks up the book and holds the back cover, with Jughead’s headshot and author blurb, up next to her face. Her eyes slide to the picture on Betty’s desk of her and Archie with their parents at their high school graduation. “What is in the water in your town?”

It’s a joke people have made about Sweetwater River before. For years in fact. But, since Betty was in high school, those jokes have centered on murder and corruption and cover ups. They have come perilously close to touching her family.

Cynthia does not know about that. Or, if her background checks have turned up anything tangential to Jason Blossom’s death more than ten years ago, she has been kind enough not to mention it. So Betty just shrugs and gives her a smile that turns down at the corners.

“And how are you settling in?”

“Good, I think! I’m putting the finishing touches on the profile of the independent bookstores in different parts of the city.”

“Great, you can send it to me to look over when you’re done. But I meant how are you settling in in general? Are you getting around okay? Do you need suggestions? A brunch date? A social life?”

Betty swallows the grin she can feel pulling on her face. She loves Cynthia—had missed her when she left New York a year ago—loved that she’d personally reached out to Betty and wooed her to the Tribune right when she was ready for it. But sometimes the woman acted like an overbearing aunt.

“The answer is, still, good. The rest of my boxes finally arrived and I got a Divvy Bike subscription for the summer. And you’re not the only person I know here, Cynth. I had dinner with my ex’s mom a few weeks ago.”

“Well, I’m glad for that, but I don’t think it counts.”

“Hey, it so does! And we have plans to go to a farmer’s market and her boyfriend is getting us tickets for a Cubs game. And I ran into Jughead — FP — while I was there.”

“Again, all good things, but that sounds more like her social life and — Jughead? FP Jones goes by Jughead?”

“It’s a childhood nickname thing.”

“Wait, Betty—you know FP Jones. Like, nickname-level know him.”

“Uh, yeah, I guess.”

“You need to interview him!”

“What? Why?” Her heart kickstarts into a merengue.

“Well for one, he has a new book coming out soon so someone from the paper needs to interview him. For two, I hired you specifically for Printers Row.”

Cynthia gives her an appraising look, then continues: “Look, I know this job is downsizing for you. I know it’s less money and I know New York is the center of the writing world. It’s not investigative journalism. You’ll probably have to write more puff pieces than longform for a while. I practically had to promise you my left kidney to get you out here. But I meant it when I said I thought this move would be good for you, that an Arts beat would be good or you. You write better interviews than anyone I know. FP Jones is a rising star. It would be a great opportunity. For both of you.”

“Okay, we’ll blow past the drama queen antics for now. No bodily organs were exchanged in the making of this job contract. Jughead and I…aren’t on the best of terms. We haven’t even talked since high school. We just both happen to come from the same small town is all. We know the same people.”

“Well that could be better! You know—you’ll be able to be more objective about him while breathing life into the background, really telling the story. You can give us another lens on what makes Riverdale tick — that whole seedy underbelly of small town America schtick he’s working with.”

Betty capitulates with a groan. She could see she wouldn’t get out of this without a fight she isn’t ready have while this new on the job.

“Look, I don’t have a way to contact him. But I’ll try. I can call Archie’s mom.”

“Perfect.” Cynthia folds her hands over her crossed leg and cocks her head at Betty.

“You want me to try now?”

“Why not?”

“Okay, fine,” she grumbles. She prays Mary is in court.

Her prayers are not answered.

“Hey Mar! No, yeah I’m good…You?…No sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt. I just wanted to ask if you had Jughead’s email address. I had a—a work question.” Her eyes bulge when Mary offers her his number instead, and she quickly looks down to the hand picking at her skirt hem. Cynthia knows her tells. “No, no, his email’s good for now. Thanks. Talk to you soon. Love you too. Bye.”

When Cynthia waltzes out ten minutes later, Betty’s inbox already contains an email from Mary with Jughead’s contact info, so she leaves with a Cheshire Cat grin on her perfectly made-up face.

Betty sighs. She really doesn’t want to do this. It feels like taking advantage of an old relationship. An old friendship. She doesn’t want to make Jughead uncomfortable. But she also doesn’t want to make herself uncomfortable.

She looks at the book on her desk, moving her thumb to trace the curve of his mouth, the slope of his jaw.

It takes her four hours to write the email. Not that she just sits there and stares at the computer screen for four hours. She’s still Betty Cooper. She sends other emails, sets up meetings, finishes proofreading her article. She takes a power walk around the block with the running shoes she keeps stashed in her purse. She does a ruthless purge until she hits inbox zero. She multitasks.

But always in the back of her mind: Dear Jughead? Dear Jug? Dear J?…Dear Jones?…Would ‘Hi’ be better than ‘Dear’? Ugh I hate myself.

Finally, at quarter to five, she shuts her eyes and hits send, then immediately begins packing up for the day.

When she goes to log off her computer, he’s already responded. Fuck.

“Hi Betty,

Of course we can set up an interview. Unfortunately all that stuff has to go through my agent and I’m sitting at a gate at O’Hare at the moment on my way back to Riverdale. If you don’t mind waiting, we can set something up next week. But if you’re up for it, I have a Skype call with him on Thursday and we’re due to talk about my promotional schedule anyway.

Let me know whatever works.

He certainly didn’t spend hours stewing and overthinking every damn syllable.

She agrees to set up the call for Thursday afternoon. Cynthia is so pleased with her she gives her permission to work from home for the day.

In Betty’s lexicon, ‘work from home’ means go on a really long run to burn off excess adrenaline and come home with a sugar coma-inducing drink from Starbucks.

So, she stands on the edge of Promontory Point, still shivering a little in her gym shorts in the early morning breeze off the lake. She forces herself through some Ujjayi breaths. One of the biggest differences she’s noticed thus far from New York is the sheer variety of scents in the air. No one leaves their trash on the curb here. There’s a chocolate factory downtown and its aromas waft over the city with the afternoon heat. In the mornings, the lake exhales a melange of algae and minerals as it laps against the rocks.

Today is the first time she’s felt panicky since moving to Chicago. Moving debacles aside, the whole experience had been pretty damn empowering. She found a sublet for her old apartment and a gorgeous new one. She hired a moving van. She made the calls to end and start her utilities. She told Alice Cooper where to stuff it when she tried to make Betty feel guilty. And she ended a relationship that wasn’t making her happy anymore, appearances her damned.

She takes a picture of the skyline across the lake and instragrams it with the skyscraper emoji and the caption “Sweet Home #Chicago.” Then, she tightens her laces and takes back off.

Sometimes she worries that by moving here she’s settling — for a smaller job, a smaller city, a smaller life than she’d promised herself — but then she remembers the other things her younger self used to want and shakes those anxieties off. Maybe people don’t decide whether their lives will be large or small. Maybe life decides for them. Maybe the correlation between size and value is smaller than she’s been led to believe.

And that is okay. She is learning that that is okay.

A few hours later, she sits on the floor in front of the coffee table, her laptop propped on a stack of books, and waits for Jughead’s call. This she can handle. This is business. There will be a chaperone, for god’s sake. She’s purposely made sure she’s in the latter part of their agenda, so there’s no chance Jughead can call her before adding his agent to the call.

So she might be a little bit of a coward. She’s okay with that too.

She almost misses the call thanks to the inanity of her inner monologue. When she answers, she sees a split screen of Jughead and an iron-haired man with wire frame glasses, and hears Janis Joplin’s cover of “To Love Somebody” pulsing in the background.

“Hey Betty — this is David. David—Betty Cooper, Chicago Tribune. She…ugh, give me a second. Those speakers carry farther than I thought.”

He disappears from the frame and the music grows softer, though it doesn’t disappear.

When he returns, they talk through some of the preliminaries — she gives them an idea of some of the questions she’s brainstormed over the past few days, of the pitch she and Cynthia have crafted. “We’re thinking a two-parter — the interview, and then I’ll review the ARC, and color it all with my own background in Riverdale. You know, add some human interest.”

Jughead opens his mouth to speak, but David jumps in before he can.

“That sounds perfect, Betty. In fact, Jughead mentioned you gave him his first writing job in high school — that the character of Betsy Coleman might in part have been inspired by you.” Jughead is clenching his jaw, looking as uncomfortable as Betty feels, so she averts her eyes.

“We’re thinking we’ll run extracts of the interview on J’s blog and the publisher’s website — maybe take out an ad in the Times when the publication date draws closer. We’d love to get some official photos.”

“No.” She looks up, startled at the vehemence in his voice. He runs a hand through his un-beanie-ed hair. A move that apparently still signals his exasperation. “Jesus, Dave. She just moved here. Give her a chance to build her own life before we start plastering her face all over buses.”

David’s face tells her they’ve already discussed the photos. That he is well-aware of Jughead’s opinion on the matter and is attempting to go over his head. She fights — and fails at — suppressing her urge to help, to fix, to placate.

“Maybe we can revisit that idea if the interview is well-received.”

“As you say. Well, I think that’s all on my end then. Betty, make sure your office contacts mine with the small print stuff. I’ll leave you two to set up the details. J, call me when you’ve looked over the new copy for the book jacket.”

“It’s not a surprise, Jughead,” she says softly when David has left the call. “I have read the book.”

“I know—I know. And I didn’t try very hard to mask the details. But you haven’t read the second one yet.”

“Well, I will soon.” She shoots for light, casual. She probably misses, if Jughead’s face is anything to go by. He’s still grinding his teeth.

The music has been getting steadily louder. “Here, I’m gonna take you with me and go outside. Jelly’s graduation is tomorrow and she’s started celebrating early.”

Of course. The music. Jellybean would be 18 now. When he settles the iPad on what she assumes is a patio table, she realizes that, though he’s in Riverdale, she actually has no idea where he is. It seems like his patio overlooks the woods.

He still knows how to read her face. “It’s—uh—a little house off Pine. For Dad and JB. The down payment seemed like a good use of my first advance.”

She feels her expression soften. It’s exactly the kind of thing he would do.

He pulls a pack of cigarettes out of his shirt pocket and lights one up. “Look — I’ll be back on Monday night but I have some things to take care of. Would Wednesday be okay for you? Say around 8?”

“Yeah, that’ll be great.”

“Thanks. I’ll think of a good place and get in touch.” Then he looks up at something beyond the screen. “Jesus Christ. Her friends have arrived. They’re heading for the fire pit.

“I’ll talk to you soon Betty.” He’s gone before she can say goodbye. She makes a half-hearted attempt to wipe the sappy grin from her face before she calls Cynthia.

Powerlunching with Mary Dauterman

I’d normally avoid posting two interviews in a row, but honestly my life is a bore, and this one’s been burning a hole in my e-pocket for over a month, so why not!? Happy March, y’all!

I met Mary when my friend Jackie invited us to a friendly lady dinner because we all had a background in advertising, and when Jackie moved away, Mary and I kept hanging out due to us both being art director-types that like graphic novels and are into doing funny projects. Mary has great glasses and is both younger than me and has some legit awards/recognitions under her belt (Young Guns, anyone?), so if she wasn’t so damn nice and creative, I would probably have to claw her face off (because women can’t be happy for each other’s successes, of course). Every once in a while we meet up to work from home together, brainstorm ideas, or just hang out; a little while ago we met for lunch at baba cool to do just that!

(This is also the first interview I’ve done in person instead of via emailed questions, so like, please bask in its authenticity and the novel way I can ask follow-up questions.)

What’s your full name? My full name is Mary Margaret Dauterman.

And where are you from originally? I’m from Dallas, Texas.

What do you do for a living? I’m a freelance art director and director, and I do lots of crafts and stuff I guess.

Where did you go to school? I went to University of Texas, it was in-state tuition, and I have no loans, so that’s great.

What’s in-state tuition? Because I’m from Texas, it was super cheap. But it was a pretty good school, and I got to live in Austin, and I love Austin. I was majoring in straight-up advertising, but in year 2 I found out there was a creative sequence you could apply to, so I got into that program and we made fake ads for 2 years, so I had a fake ad portfolio to get other jobs. That’s a thing only University of Texas has that was purely lucky.

Do you have a bachelor? Yeah, I have a BS.

HAHAHA… so advertising is sciences? I took so much biology and I thought I had every dramatic disease cause that’s all I was learning. I was like, I definitely have Marfan syndrome. It’s tall people who are near-sighted and have very long limbs and oversized hearts and a lot of them drop dead in their early 30s. The case study was this woman named Flo Hyman who was a volleyball player, and they think Abraham Lincoln had it, too.

I know you’ve done a lot of non-client side projects, can you tell me about them? I do so much non-client work. I just made a video about an influencer who shits her pants. I have written and illustrated two books. I made a tortilla towel a few years ago. I guess I made more web-based stuff at first; I made an awards show for gifs when I lived in California.

Do you code? No, not at all. That one, I had the idea at work and so there was a web developer who made it with my photoshop files. I’ve made a few tiny sites that I’ve made [my boyfriend] Kirill code, like yulebra.com. It’s just like a yule log, but a bra was burnt.

How do you find the time to do self-directed projects in between client work? I guess now I’m trying to figure out the best way to do it. Now I’m really excited when I have downtime in between clients, when before I used to be mad stressed [about money]; you just don’t know what’s going to happen. And then if you’re making an expensive project you’re like, I need money for my project. But now I’m psyched about my downtime cause I can focus on my weird shit. If I get obsessive about an idea I just want to work on it all the time, just literally squeezing it in any time I don’t have to respond to other stuff. I’m a big old dork and I like working.

How do you negotiate work or rates as a woman? The best thing is to keep it all in email, which I’ve actually been told not to do, but you can be as emotionless as possible and just send the info without making it about the fact that you’re a woman. Give yourself an hour to respond so you can think about it before you send something. Every time I send something out of anxiety it’s bad. Be a slower emailer!

So you work from home a lot of the time. I know you were in agencies before, so how did you make the transition? My first freelance gig was in Portland, and every time they’ve hired me since they ask if I can come out there. Sometimes I’m like, “Sure”, and other times I’m like, “I don’t want to come live there for 3 months again, that was intense, and my life is in New York”. So for them I work remotely a lot. And then a couple of places here, I’ve said, “Hey if we don’t have meetings, I can just work from home”, and they’re cool with it. The best way to do it is to have a client that is nowhere near you so there’s no way to go into an office.

How do you find clients? Do they come to you? Mostly the places I freelance for had recruiters that reached out to me asking for me to become full time and I said, "No, but I will freelance for you”. So that’s how it’s happened a lot. Sometimes, since I’ve worked at so many big agencies, all the people I’ve met there have dispersed and will sometimes reach out or I’ll bug them and find gigs.

What would your dream job be? I think in terms of lifestyle, I like my [current] lifestyle, it’s great. Project-wise, I’m wanting to do more short films, so I’m planning on that. But it would be such a dream if someone else paid for that, not me.

I’m pretty certain I want to focus on directing but the aesthetics of things are still very important [to me], that’s part of why I like [self-producing projects], cause it’s all that stuff at once. I’m thinking I want to be directing commercials and then getting to do passion projects with that funding, but if there was no financial concern, it would be cool to just be directing movies… but that’s like, NOT REAL, haha.

But probably [my dream job is] no real job. Just lots of things at once.

In regards to working at home, what do you find yourself wearing? Well I only have one pair of sweatpants. I’m looking for recommendations for a second.

I was in UNIQLO recently and I’m considering getting a pair. I know we’re both kind of tall, and you’re taller than me, but I have a hard time finding sweatpants that are long enough. Long sweatpants are important. I bought some online and they had a drop crotch and I’m like, this isn’t going to work, even if no one’s ever going to see me. Just, no.

I also hate the ones that are low-rise. I need a high-rise on my sweatpants! You want to be cozy!

Do you wear them everyday? Lately, embarrassingly yes; sometimes leggings, sometimes I will put on comfy jeans. My boyfriend was making fun of me because sometimes I will get dressed from the waist up because I have video calls, but sometimes it’s literally the t-shirt I slept in the night before and then I’ll put on pants.

What’s your favourite thing to eat when you’re working from home? I’ve basically been trying to recreate sweetgreen bowls. I’ve been doing lots of stir fried veggies and grains and stuff, which would be $15 if I weren’t at home.

What’s the most shameful thing you eat? I eat handfuls of chocolate chips a lot. I went through a phase where I was just making myself a giant grilled cheese every single day, and then I was like, Why do I feel horrible?! It’s so delicious! Actually no, I take that back; the most shameful thing is when I just Seamless something to my house when I have plenty of time to cook.

How does your boyfriend like living with someone who works from home? Recently I was bragging to someone about how I was really clean, and [my boyfriend] was like, “Uh NO, sometimes I come home from work and wonder, what the hell happened in here?!” If I’m intensely in a project I will still cook myself lunch and then just leave everything out, which is gross.

I get that, you don’t want to spend your precious time cleaning. You’re like, Huuuhhhh I have a deadline!!

What do you listen to when you work? Sometimes I watch movies when I’m working if it’s something mindless. I listen to podcasts and recently I’ve been listening to lots of classical music but it kind of makes me feel like I’m a serial killer plotting a murder.

How do you practice self-care* and work/life balance? Well I just came from the gym. I have 2 gym classes I really like going to but I can only go to them if I’m working from home because they’re at 10am on weekdays. And I’m like, who are all the other people in here?! They’re packed classes!

I think a lot of people either work in the service industry at night, or they’re like us, or maybe they’re housewives? I think at the Park Slope location, all housewives. And there’s always one 40-50yr old guy in this one pilates class I take and I decided he just sold a bajillion dollar company, that’s his deal. Although he would probably go to Equinox if that’s his story, not Crunch. So I dunno what he does.

Do you have any weird skills or talents I don’t know about? I should be talented but I’m not. I took piano until I was 18 but I am not good at it.

Anything else you want to plug while you’re here? I recommend getting a cat while you work from home. It makes you feel less alone, even if they’re passed out asleep. [My cats are] Lemon, from Liz Lemon, and Bobby, after Bobby Hill. Lemon loves conference calls and she comes running and sits on my lap during them which is really nice.

Are there any tv shows or books you're really into right now?* Ooh ok I JUST binged all of Russian Doll in one day and I'm pretty sure I loved it. I'm also always re-watching old eps of King of the Hill and X-Files. I'm currently reading The Road Through the Wall by Shirley Jackson. I'm really into the graphic novel Beverly and got Sabrina by Nick Drnaso (your suggestion!). It was DARK and sad and good.

What are you wearing? I’m wearing a sweatshirt that is red, a shirt that I sleep in a lot, and leggings that I think are my mom’s, and some Nikes, and a coat. I’m *so* glad this is my outfit for our interview, but it’s pretty accurate.

1) The Cold Email FormulaHi (first name),Mention something they've achieved recently. Say you would like their help.Lay down your vision for solving a painful and widely felt problem in their industry.Ask for a low commitment from them.Sign off.2) BackgroundI recently claimed on a post that contacting people for research via cold email and LinkedIn is still effective but only if your message is worth reading.If you need to talk to potential customers, I believe you shouldn't rule out sending cold emails/LinkedIn messages.I was asked by a couple of people to give a template. The answer is there's no magic template. Your goal is to research and personalize each email for every person you contact.So I decided to break down my formula instead.Please remember:This isn't a cold sales email. Although with minor tweaks it can be. This was written for innovative, early-stage B2B startups in mind. But it can be tweaked for any industry or sector.This isn't the only way to write a cold email.Some people swear by making it clear exactly what you're offering upfront. The problem with that approach is that for early-stage startups, your solution will change as you validate and iterate. It may not be that appealing to them early on, hence the need to speak to them first.This is why I've found more success in focusing on the person you're contacting and their problem. Rather than your proposed solution that may not even exist yet.I hope this helps you as much is has helped me. Let's get stuck in!3) Who is it for?This is for you if:You need to talk to users about a problem you want to solveYou need to reach high-value leads.You're still building your network.You're still in the research/validation phase. You need to talk to potential users/customers but you're not in full sales mode yet.You're contacting people in an industry that's new to you.This isn't for you if:Who you approach doesn't matter or you need a large number of leads immediately. This research can be time-consuming. If that's the case, try ads.4) Researching LeadsYour research will vary widely based on your industry. Here are a few tips:Be Ready to Take Notes (Important!)Be ready to take notes on people you research. Make sure you keep on top of this.For example, you can create a spreadsheet, use Onenote/Evernote or use a CRM.Keep your old notes after contacting leads. Most industries are quite small at the top and your notes will have a compounding effect. You'll soon start to connect the dots and see trends and commonalities.How to Research LeadsStart by Googling their name and company. Make sure you understand their specific role.Look for industry press releases for their company. Look for any activity that relates to them.Search for their personal and company Twitter accountsLook at their Instagram if it's publicLook through their LinkedIn, see if they know anyone who could make an intro for youSee what roles they're hiring forIf they're in charge of sourcing products, research what products they've stocked in the past and why. Research those companies and their ethos. See if they are connected to people within those companies too.Find out what their biggest challenge is as a business. This could be hiring, scaling or finding unique products to source. The secret is to tie their biggest business challenge to your overall vision for fixing their industry. With practice, you'll be able to accurately see what their biggest challenge is. Most businesses are usually quite open about it.5) An Overview of the FormulaLet's take another look at the rough formula for cold emails/LinkedIn messages. We'll break it down down into 3 paragraphs.The 3 Step FormulaHi (first name),Mention something they've achieved recently. Ask for their help.Lay down your vision for solving a painful and widely felt problem in their industry.Ask for a low commitment from them.Sign off.6) How to Write Your Cold Email- Paragraph 1Length:Aim for 2 sentences max. 30 Words TotalGoal:Mention something you've researched about them then. Then ask for their help.Do:You could congratulate them on opening a new location, a fundraise, a new product.You're praising but also showing you've done your research and you think they are credible enough to be able to help you too.You could mention someone on their level that you've recently met, who they know.You could mention someone who has made an intro/suggested you contact them (if that person hasn't already)You can adjust your tone based on their personality or the brand of their business. Formal emails can be offputting. Use your research to guide your actions on this.Tip: I would often go into a business as a customer, find a moment to ask for the owner/ops director's name and contact details without being pushy. Then write an email there and then to that person, saying the name of their employee who suggested you contact them.Don't:Don't 'hope' or 'pray' that your email 'finds them well' or 'in good health' etc. There's no need. It's a waste of precious text. If you don't know them, it comes across as disingenuous.- Paragraph 2Length:Aim for 2 sentences max. 30 Words TotalGoal:Lay down your vision for solving a painful and widely felt problem in their industry.Do:Show that you understand the most painful business problem they're experiencing. A problem that is also holding the industry back. A strong vision is often the most powerful tool an entrepreneur has. In a few words, you can open the eyes of your prospect to a better future, in a way they hadn't thought about.Make your vision solve a painful problem and sound exciting. Even if it's in the most mundane part of a business.Make them feel that they and their advice will be so important that you need them to be involved in helping shape your solution.You should keep this paragraph very brief. The skill in cold emails is saying as much as possible, in as few words as possible. Make them curious so they want to hear more - https://www.wired.com/2010/08/the-itch-of-curiosity/You should constantly be refining and slimming this paragraph down. It's arguably the most important.If you have your website link in your email sig. Make sure the messaging on your landing page, matches the messaging in your email.This is a powerful technique for getting a response if you're yet to define a solution. The intrigue it generates. Again this isn't a sales email. It's for early-stage businesses that are simply trying to nail a meeting with an important lead to get feedback, validation or conduct a user interview.Don't:Don't go into too much detailDon't make unrealistic claimsDon't name your company within the paragraphs. They'll see it in the email sig and in your email address before they opened the email. It's optional but really not necessary.- Paragraph 3Length:Aim for one sentence, two max. 20 words.Goal:A very low commitment ask.Do:Know exactly what your goal is before contacting anyone. It's normal for this to be slightly different for each person you contact.If you're emailing: Do you want knowledge? An intro? To be able to send a deck for feedback or to be passed on to someone else? Be specific.If on LinkedIn: You're usually asking for their email address to send more info. So your message can be even shorter. It may feel like an extra step but they'll be expecting your email. I've found my conversions were much higher doing this. There's also an element of intrigue and respect that you've asked permission before sharing your ask.If you're arranging a call/meeting, then offer a time and day that you think they'll be free based on your research. For example, in the hospitality industry, there are days that ops directors won't take meetings due to the nature of their work.Do your research. For example, if you know from your research where their office is, mention grabbing a coffee a street away, etc.Don't:Don't ask for any more than of their time than you need. Be specific in your request.Don't make them do the work of arranging the time, place, day, etc.7) TipsUnderstand the basics of copywriting. Write to Sell is a great primer for beginners. - Write to Sell, Andy MaslenDon't obsess about copywriting, you don't need to become an expert. Many copywriting tricks and tips will take you off course. Keep it simple.Edit, edit and edit again. Cut out weasel words. Hemingway is an excellent tool for this - http://www.hemingwayapp.com/Use a thesaurus to find shorter words. Count the syllables in your sentences -https://syllablecounter.net/Check your writing for it's reading grade level. Simple yet highly effective - https://readabilityformulas.com/free-readability-formula-tests.phpSpell check everything you write - Grammarly.comTrack and organize your emails with a CRM - Hubspot allows you to move contacts across a Pipeline and track email opens. This is extremely useful when you're contacting a lot of people. There are other tools but choose cautiously - www.hubspot.comYou can send your personalized emails faster using Woodpecker. You can use your existing email account and it'll schedule emails so you don't get flagged by Gmail. It's highly effective and worth the price. Good for those starting out, with a free trial too - www.woodpecker.coRead your email out loud. If it sounds awkward, it'll probably read awkwardly too.Aim for clarity. Don't use industry jargon even if you think they'll understand it.The word limits included are for you to focus on keeping it brief. You may need to write more but beware of fluff. Keep it to the essentials.If you get a reply, you can include more details on the second email. Even pre-launch, an attractive deck on your reply can go a long way to building credibility and intrigue.When you get a meeting, make sure you ask questions properly. The Mom Test is a great starting point - http://momtestbook.com/8) Common IssuesWhy am I not getting any replies?If your email is succinct, punchy and persuasive but you're still not getting feedback, it's possible that the problem you're describing just isn't interesting to them.One quick solution until you land on messaging that resonates is to include fewer details. Just mention you want to solve a painful problem their industry faces. Add more detail about the specific problem as you get more feedback and understand the industry better.How can I refine my message when I'm not getting any replies?Great cold emails require a holistic approach of integrating everything you learn through your research, conversations, meetings, and rejections.I once lucked out by sitting a table across from the national operations director for a large restaurant chain. I knew the head office was near that restaurant and would work in there some mornings on my laptop.I overheard a conversation and politely waited until he'd finished his meeting then asked him for a couple of minutes of his time. Those 3-4 minutes gave me an invaluable insight into a major purchasing decision they were looking to make and exactly what their goals and red lines were.This info was pure gold in understanding the problems of chains of his size. It was almost the polar opposite of what slightly smaller chains would require. I already had a good pitch from my cold emailing but I was able to tweak my approach for companies of a similar size who were facing similar challenges. My conversions were beyond what I could've hoped for.Tip:As you contact more people, you'll see that many of them face similar challenges. You can save time by segment them by characteristics that aren't always obvious when you start. You can then use this knowledge to more accurately predict what messaging will work on future leads.I've got a template that's converting well, should I change it?After around 10-20 replies, you should have a good idea of what resonates and what doesn't. Even more so after you meet the people you've contacted in person or speak on the phone.So take notes during your meetings. Listen to what they found exciting, what they're really struggling with. Refine and improve. There's no reason not to be an expert at this quickly.Always ask for intros when you make a successful contact and you've earnt their trust/intrigue. I can't stress this enough.Don't get stuck using the same template, keep iterating, Even if the improvements become marginal gains.What conversion rates should I expect?I'd often get open rates as high as 90%. Replies would change for each mini-campaign, starting lower and getting significantly higher as I refined the email but always over 50%.My email rates always declined rapidly when I got overconfident and did less research. Or when I was less picky about qualifying leads to contact.After refining your message and building up a good database of research, it becomes rare not to get a reply. This will obviously change by industry and how attractive your vision/the problem you want to solve is.Qualifying the right type of people to speak to will drastically improve your conversion rates. When you understand the industry, you're able to predict what messaging will resonate with a certain type of prospect in a business at a certain stage, a certain size or facing a certain challenge. Your research will be vital for this. The clearer you can organize it and find insights from it, the better.How often do I follow up?There's a lot of different thinking about follow-ups. The standard rule is that you should keep following up until you get a response. If your startup takes off, you'll likely bump into some of the leads you're contacting one day. Be persistent but respectful.You should wait at least 3 days before your first follow up. Your follow up emails should be short and easy for them to take action.9) SummarySo that's it! There's no secret template. It's hard work, at first anyway. Once you get stuck in, it becomes fun. Interview with SCg Shoes/owner Steven Caro Q.(-How many years has SCG been around?) A.I started SCg in Greenville NC back in 1999, making us the First Rider Owned Shoe Company. That would put us about 20 years old! (Some may recall you guys being Dave Mirra 2 video game back in 2002!) A.I wish I could have been! hahaha. Although Dave was a really good friend, he was sponsored by DC and they were featured in the game. Rest easy Dave, you are missed and loved more than words could express... Q.(What motivated you to start a BMX shoe brand in the ERA of Etnies and DC being on the throne?) The funny thing is I started SCg after getting really pissed because a popular shoe made by one of the big guys blew up on me riding. I had gone to Florida from NC to meet up with my cousin to ride and hang out. At the skatepark, I purchased the shoes and went on to do a wall ride to table and my foot blew off the pedal. After I crashed I realized I could see my sock through the side of my brand new shoes. I tried to warranty the shoe at the skatepark, and when talking to the brands sales rep on the phone about warranty, when I mentioned I blew it up riding bikes, they said it was designed for skateboarding not BMX. The back and forth with that got me so pissed off I turned right around and headed back home. Driving back from Florida, I stopped for gas in Georgia off the highway, and literally standing in socks and still pissed about it all and the money spent on the blown up shoes, and it starts raining.. Livid, standing in a gas station parking lot in socks, and feet getting wet because of the rain, thats when I decided I'd make my own damn shoes.. lol. That was in 1998. When I got back home I sketched up what I wanted pretty quickly, but it took the rest of the year trying calls and what felt like about a million emails to find someone that would talk to me and actually help me get the first shoes produced. Q.(You currently sponsor Zack Gerber who seems to share the same core BMX values your brand, not to mention he is also extremely underrated. Have you released a signature products with him yet?) A.Yes sir. We sponsor Zack Gerber. That came about indirectly through Billy Woodfin, who rides for us and also rides for Standard Bykes. Billy had been riding SCg's and told Zack about them and Zack put his money where his mouth was and bought shoes. I remember thinking, Zack fkn kills it, and offered him a discount on his purchase, and he flat out refused. Said he liked what we were doing and wanted to support SCg, so thats where it all started. I was stoked getting to know him more and wanted to support his as well, and thats how it came to be Zack riding for SCg. I think his BMX values, and his outlook on life and other things are on the same page with me for sure. A while back, Zack was on a road trip and came through Florida and he stayed with us here at the house for some days and it was awesome to get to not just ride with him, and hang out, but talk a bunch and had some really great conversations and a lot more stuff way more profound then just BMX. Zack is awesome. We've done some limited edition Pro Insoles with Zack's grafix, and literally about time to restock so have to call Zack to see if he wants to keep the art work the same, or if he'd like to do something different. We'll be doing more signature stuff with Zack and the rest of the team guys as well. Q.(You have sponsored some legends of the years such as Bruce Crisman. Care to name a few others that you have hooked up over the years?) A.Bruce Crisman and I met when he moved to Greenville, and quickly because one of my best friends. Bruce is family to me, and love that guy to death. Not to mention, he's killed it on a bike forever. He was riding for us when he won the X Games, and then he got an offer from Adidas that I told him he should't pass up! lol. Been fortunate to have some great guys ride for SCg over the years, some briefly, some have never left. Alejandro Caro, Will Love, Rick Moliterno, I think fit that bill of legend and I think Glenn Salyers would have been in the same light as well. Rest easy Glenn. We've got Zack now that fits that bill and is still killing it. Our current group of guys are all awesome and I'm sure they will all be legends in their own right. We'll be a legend factory.. lol. Seriously, I'm honored to have such great riders and guys being a part of SCg Shoe Co. Billy Woodfin, Zack Gerber, Riley Jordan, Mike Hinkins, Mike Bennett, Brian Fox, Patrick Guimez, Ryan Torrence, Jed Mildon, Jay Cowley, James McGraw, and Alejandro Caro. We've got some other guys on the BMX side of things we're helping out as well and we've got guys repping in the MTB world as well. Q.(What can we look out from SCG this year? Any plans or new products in the works?) A.”For SCg Shoe Co. as a business, we've recently increased our stake in the factory that produces our shoes in Colombia South America. We own 50% now, and we're moving to own 100% hopefully by the end of this year. So thats a huge one. Controlling the product from the drawing board, to making tooling, to selecting materials, making the shoes, and shipping them out. We control the entire process and to me, thats the most important part of being able to produce the quality shoes that I want. Its taken a really long time focusing on the back end to get to the point where we own 50% of the factory, and we're not done yet.. lol. With new products, we're working on clip shoes for bmx racing and mtb. We'll be offering every shoe in the line up as a flat pedals shoe, or available in a clip pedal shoe as well. We've got a Enduro shoe we're about done with that will be in the Enduro World Series this year with a new team rider there, but we're not announcing his name just yet, but he's fast as hell, and fits who we are as a brand and group of guys. Absolutely sure we'd be able to have a SCg bbq and everyone that would be there would all have a blast and enjoy everyone else thats on the team. Thats always the goal, to have awesome guys with different perspectives, and all be able to dig being around each other. For plans, I'd love to do a team trip. We've never done one really, since its always been keeping inventory on the shelf, new products getting developed, and mostly buying tooling and equipment to get to the 50% ownership of the factory now and working to that 100%.” Q.(How can shops go about becoming a SCG dealer?) A.”Right now, we don't have any outside sales guys, but we're working on that right now. Working on distro in the UK, and outside sales here in the states, but any shop that wants to carry SCg , we'd love it. We don't do any crazy big buy in's to become a dealer. We suggest a full size run to start, but each shop is different with what their needs are and budget is. While her last book, The Smart Woman's Guide to Diabetes, covered the whole kit and caboodle of living with diabetes, her latest book hones in on one particular trouble area: good nutrition and weight loss.

While most books on eating are very prescriptive, focusing on "do this" and "don't do that," this new book is more anecdotal. Amy brings in some expert testimony -- such as Joslin nutritionist Amy Campbell and Franzika Spritzler, an LA-based RD and CDE, to discuss food myths, proper nutrition, and even thoughts on the popular high-protein Dukan Diet and "caveman" Paleo Diet.

But the book primarily shares the experiences of Amy and fellow FWDs (females with diabetes), like fellow D-authors Riva Greenberg, Ginger Vieira and Cheryl Alkon and D-bloggers Sysy Morales and Elizabeth Edelman. Considering diabetes and nutrition are both such individual things, it makes sense to incorporate as much personal testimony as possible, along with sample daily meal plans of the women interviewed.

The book is easy-to-read and engaging, constantly switching between interviews with diabetes educators and dieticians, to quotes from real women with diabetes, to Amy's own experiences, to well-researched recaps of the latest studies on nutrition and weight loss.

Nearly everyone Amy interviewed for the book is living with type 1 diabetes. On one hand, it makes sense to focus on one type of diabetes since food can affect patients so differently due to differences in medications. But on the other hand, I also think a lot of these food issues (including the great low-carb debate) are completely relevant to type 2 PWDs as well. Even though there's a lack of type 2 emphasis, I definitely think this book is suitable for both. You'll just need to do some tweaking and evaluating on your own. (Hey, Your Diabetes May Vary, right?!...)

Although the book title's subhead declares "What Will Work," I didn't think the book told me to "do this" all too much. Instead, it seemed to more suggest a variety of things that one might consider, like eating lower-carb or becoming a vegetarian. The overall message: whole grains, vegetables, fruit and protein are good; and refined sugars, processed foods, and sugary drinks are bad. Seems simple enough, and not really breaking news to anyone.

A significant portion of the book is devoted to carbs, which we PWDs often have a love/hate relationship with. Although the book is balanced between high-carb vs. low-carb diets, several of the women share that they eat strict low-carb diets because fewer carbs cause fewer excursions in blood sugar. The American Diabetes Association and many dieticians have expressed worry that a low-carb diet means too much protein, which could have a negative impact on heart and kidney health. Plus, carbohydrates are your body's primary source of energy, so cutting back too much could be counterproductive, they say. It's a tricky compromise, and while this book gives plenty of examples of how to make either type of diet work, at the end of the day, the message here is that each PWD needs to focus on what works and is sustainable for us as individuals.

Even Amy admits what an impact a number of carbs (literally!) can have on her blood sugar, and she says, "I lived with the roller-coast spike and fall of my blood sugars for years until I became pregnant for the first time and finally said good-bye to breakfast cereal."

Nutrition is something I'm constantly struggling to understand myself, and it seems like every day there is a new discovery saying that the previous discovery was totally wrong! How does anyone keep up? It's a never-ending battle.

In the end, the moral of the story is really to be as informed as possible. My personal feeling is that Eating Right with Diabetes is a great addition for those seeking expert info coupled with real-world experience from women who "get it"!
